    i live in another cold part of Canada, on the prairies, and enjoy my Tesla 3 and Y very much. I agree that the standard range in winter is not ideal, but the newer long range models are quite good, with up to 30% loss of range in -20 or colder situations. i leave longer drives for the warmer seasons. Gas cars will soon be history in any event and batteries just keep getting better.

      Wow thanks for the insight considering you own both! I agree with you the newer ones absolutely are much better suited especially long range models for winter conditions. I really do love the car now it’s just a matter of Tesla or something else for my first electric daily driver 🔥

    so I have a 2018 tesla model 3 with 205000 km i live in canada and i have never had issues with range my battery has lost 5% and i drive 250 km for my commute and if you need further convincing watch tesla bjorn he has also tested ev's in winter with very interesting results.

      Interesting. Well these are my real results. Definitely wasn’t as bad when -10 to -15 but in more freezing temperatures I definitely had a lot of range anxiety. Curious overnight how does it fare when left outside?

    Great video! I think you stated facts that a lot of other canadians are thinking about when considering an ev. I think EV's overall are great if the majority of your commutes are short and less then 100-150km but once you get into a commute thats over 200km there is definetly a bit of anxiety especially in winter temperatures here in Canada and thats not even taking into consideration degredation over the years when owning an ev. I do hope battery tech gets better over the years but at this point i dont know if an ev would be the best for anyone who regularly does longer commutes of 200-250km+ especially if there living in colder winter temps.

    Just a month ago bought my Tesla model 3 performance, I heard they made some new battery formula for the new 2022 apparently, so I'll see how she drives in the winter time in Edmonton Alberta, Canada😬 it usually hits here below -40C!

    The lithium Ion batteries(all of its variants) will always have the temperature issues. It would take a completely different batt chemistry to change that, but, every battery design will have its drawbacks.

    i can't imagine the ioniq 5's battery would last long when it's charging from 20%-80% in 15 minutes lol. i don't think that batteries in cars are developed enough for them to completely phase out the ICE. we also need a much bigger electrical grid to accommodate for an all-electric car world, and judging the rates of street construction in Ontario, i don't think they'll have the infrastructure for every car to become electric. any time soon.

    I really like this video I’m from Quebec and I ordered the standard range due the rebates still waiting on it but if their wasn’t rebate i would go for the long range and I believe batteries will get better it’s like IPhones I remember my iphone 6 in the freezing cold would shut off today my iPhone could be on in -30 but today technology is so good that things like that will get better with Tesla

      I live in Beauce (Quebec) and just ordered my M3 LR. I think that the M3 RWD is actually superior with iron based batteries and the ability to charge 100% without damaging the battery. That said, we drive often to the states and the extra range of the LR is a major plus when going 1000+ Km.

    It sounds strange that the car lost 20% overnight. I suspect that Sentry mode was activated & that the battery was cold? Then some of the battery capacity will be available once the battery has heated up.. (this is normally indicated by a snowflake in the screen). One advice from me if you're driving a model 3 in cold conditions; keep it plugged in overnight. Even if the battery isn't charging it will use the power to keep the battery sufficiently heated. I've driven my 2020 model 3 SR+ in northern Scandinavia at -30 celsius, and yes, experienced some increase in consumption, but the built in navigator takes that into account when calculating a route, so that's not a big issue (if at all an issue).

      If charging outside overnight in a -35. can the connection freeze over or the “flap” get stuck?

      @@MarkShaw-g6x The only issues I've had when charging at -20 and below is that the charge port might freeze, then a plastic card can be used to gently remove the ice. But that has happened like at one single occasion, I think that the charge port door is actually heated.

    I heard Tesla is going to announce battery improvements this year. Also Toyota is close to announcing a solid state battery technology soon. I live in NY which gets pretty cold in Winter too. Not as cold as Canada…but cold. I really want to go Electric… but may go hybrid next…and then go electric.

      Exactly and that’s our dilemma living in this winter climates. You may need to get a hybrid first then switch to full electric in 3-5 years?

      @@carswithsonduren That looks like the plan yes. The new prius & prius prime are at the top of my list. Then in a few years I’ll revisit EVs and see how far the battery tech has improved. I am definitely excited to go fully electric at some point. ⚡️ 👍🏼

    If you’re in Canada you should plug your car in every night… have a home charger.
    This example in regards to 25% battery degradation, is probably due to poor charging practices.
    Also nowadays they have heat pumps that help with efficiency in cold weather.

    Most cars in Canada you can lose 25% with gas engine in the winter with warming up the car, driving in snowy conditions. The difference is range anxiety to a charging station.

    The solution might be to keep it plugged in overnight in winter time, to keep both cabin and batts warm!
    Also the new LFP batts should be much better for all weather climate, cold as well!

      No, LFP are really sensitive to temps. and have less capacity than the lithium nickel, cobalt batts.

    Your review saved me from making a terrible decision. I was going to switch from ICE to EV as my only vehicle. We drive Ottawa to London every 2 months and the number of times we'd have to charge it especially in the winter is just not going to work. Was really hoping to save $ on gas but the technology clearly hasn't caught up to [my] reality.

    First, how many days do we have in Canada in our major cities which are below -15C? There are only 2 months with significant cold nights here in montreal.
    As for travelling to Vancouver in winter, you do realize realize that Tesla opened a ton of 250kw chargers all along the trans Canada highway. That was back in 2020. Pretty much all new charger locations are level 3 (250 kw).
    Also, all new Teslas since early 2021 have heat pumps which greatly improve range in winter.
    Once again, actually go look up how many days we have sub -20c per year…. Very few.
    We are no longer guaranteed green Christmases anymore, and that’s been so for over a decade. It’s called climate change.

      David I agree with what you’re saying but even at temperatures near -15C battery degradation is still a problem. This is not just for my own experience but for many of my friends who own various electric cars.

    Great video ! And I believe tesla claiming 10% battery life being lost is if you charge the battery till 80% and not 100%

      Thanks man! Another thing to note I was not easy on accelerating during testing so I would say it was driven with some love ;). We have seen Tesla push OTA updates to improve battery life, could still happen. Overall, amazing car.

    Lol, if you live in FSJ, Edmonton, Calgary or anywhere with really cold temperature, then you might as well forget about owning any electric car. Only get one if you commute less than 100km and have a heated garage. It’s awesome in normal conditions though.
    If you don’t have a heated garage and/or home charger, then you literally have to plan your week around charge maintenance, think about how annoying that is…every day you lose 20% of range. I already get annoyed about how often I need to charge my cell phone.

      This is exactly a big problem that I’m trying to point out especially for those dealing with winter climates such as yourself. You have to really plan around the car which sucks.

    Just a note on your comment about dealer markups, Dealer markups that are more than MSRP are illegal in Ontario as far as I am aware. I'm expecting the majority of ICE models of popular vehicles to become hybrid versions in the next few years as we progress towards more full EVs. The majority of consumers In my opinion still dont' know the difference between a full EV, a PHEV and a Hybrid... as seen in comments on this video

    I have a model 3 and I drive in Sweden! Horrible car in Winter.. Long range max 150 km! With -5C if you push it..

    I think the new model 3 LR with the heat pump and bigger battery would do much better. Sounds like the owner of this model 3 abused the battery over the 200k kms.

      @@carswithsondurenM3 LR with heat pump owner here. On the very coldest of days, -25 and under, I lost about 25% range without preconditioning. With preconditioning however, range loss was less than 10%

    Not to play the “i’M a ToUgHeR CaNadIan” card, but the loss of 20% at -30 is significant to me, here in Manitoba its not uncommon to get a week, sometimes two of temps between -25 to -35 without the wind chill. So ive always been wondering if maybe hybrids are the answer up here in our climate; unless they figure out how to prevent or lessen cold battery drain (which i hope they do!)

      I think that it boils down to driving habits. If you regularly drive 100+ km in winter than you probably should stick with gas. However if your daily commutes are just 40-50km than you wont even notice the loss of range. Keep in mind that you charge these like your cell phone, you plug it in when you get home so in the morning you are always ''topped off''. Also, you should know that unlike old school lead acid batteries, a Lithium ion battery ''does not'' get damaged by running in cold temps. The cold may actually extend the battery.

      Hybrids are different than a full EV, like a Tesla. A hybrid has a regular engine as well as supplementary power from a battery.

      @@babyganga8786 our Tesla model 3 costs roughly 2$ per 100 km of range charged. In all I drive about 400km per week so 7-8$-week . Compare this to my wife’s Dodge Journey and she drives far less and fills up once a week. To tank the dodge here in Quebec, it costs us 120-130$. So 8$ hydro vs 120$ gas. Over the span of 5 years, a 60k tesla is cheaper to own than a 10k Corolla.

      @@rojahrojah you’re right and wrong. My buddy in northern Alberta that owns one he says they’re 10x more junk in the winter. battery only lasts half the range as the summer and he got the top of the line Tesla..
      the technology isn’t there yet the combustion engine has had 200 years to develop while the electric cars only been goin on the past maybe 30 years tops, not on a consumer level that was only the past 5-10

      ​@@KP-xi4bjthat is about right yeah. I mean it is technically 6 months but the harsher chills are about half of it, so it should be good to go. I'm in Toronto and it usually averages negative 20 or so.

      @@teedeekay9720Dude, I'm in Toronto as well. Winter is 3 months, just like Spring is 3 months, Summer is 3 months and Fall is 3 months. We have 4 distinct seasons. In the last couple of years, we've been spoiled with mild winters averaging around -8 to -9 C. How do I know this? I was there!

    I had the same issue it's not 25% degredation it's adjusting the range based on real world driving. Tesla definitely is more optimistic about real world range.

      Totally agree. 25% it’s crazy.
      Degradation is not that much. Otherwise nobody in Canada or low temperature cities will get a Tesla or ev.

    the key to winter driving an electric car is to keep them plugged in overnight and preheat the car while it's still plugged in. That will help some of the range loss.

    I wonder if a guy could put a battery blanket on?
    When it’s below 10 I usually leave trickle charger on my 16f350. Cold doesn’t do good for any batteries haha

      Yea we’ll ideally you park inside in these conditions. I would say this is an extreme test and something you won’t face everyday but it’s important to know what would happen. Otherwise I love the car, definitely convinced me to go electric for my next daily driver. The question is, Tesla or Ioniq 5?

      We had two weeks of around -30 this Christmas in Prince George.
      I suppose if a guy left his Tesla plugged in outside it would be fine then eh?

      Actually when the car was running and heated I felt like it was more normal, even if left outside plugged into a regular wall outlet it was fine tbh. Let me tell you though, this would smoke my R8 from a stop lol.

    This car is fun to drive in all weathers. I’m from Calgary, and when it hits -30C or lower, you can’t take this out for a drive. I have a 2020 M3 Base, and I’ll maybe get 90km range in -30C & below. Wish someone has told me this earlier. However, it’s amazing car for all other seasons. Great video! Cheers

    While the new 3/Y have heat pumps to help, one thing I don’t miss about my Tesla Model 3 performance is how much range it loses when it’s just sitting, even here in AZ. My new Mach E GT, I left for 10 days at the airport at 73%- I came back at 73% - true the Mach E GT doesn’t have the sentry mode for cameras while parked, which I assume is why Tesla ghost drains?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

      You can turn off sentry mode to conserve battery. I have my car at the airport as we speak and It’s been there for 2 weeks. It was at 60% it’s at 58% now (Model Y 2019)

    I don't think the 2018 Model 3 had a heat pump, did it? That could help a lot!

      That is true it did not. What I see on the forums is that it helps no better than 10%

    Worth mentioning that at some point in 2021, Tesla started putting heat pumps in all Model 3s, which markedly improved cold weather performance.

      Good point you are right. Still from what I have read the improvement is not significant enough that this concern is eliminated.
