Cut a strip of 1/8 inch thick wood to snugly fit in the right side miter slide and let it stick out the back a bit. Slide the fence over untill it touches the strip then lock it in place. Cut a strip of wood and measure it. It should measure 0.500 inches. If its off change the blade thickness. Lift the strip and move the fence over untill it stops again. Very good review of this saw! I have a question though. On a full size tablesaw, the operation you are doing @ 5:17 is considered super dangerous! The thicker piece always being placed between the blade and fence so the thinner piece can fall away from the blade, and a push stick is used to push the bigger piece clear of the blade. If the thinner piece is between the blade and fence, there is a huge chance of kickback when the cut is completed because there’s no room for a push stick, and the thinner slice, being pinched between the fence and rotating blade gets shot out of the saw toward the operator at warp speed! My question being can the micrometer be moved to a location that would the thin piece to be on the far side of the blade from the fence? I really like this saw, but I don’t like what I see from the micrometer part as far as operator or bystander safety! Thanks!

Byrnes makes a great saw. At this point, I must ask two questions: 1) how did you become involved with ship models? 2) your work suggests a professional effort over a hobby. Do you build on commission? Sell your work? Thank you!

Thank you for such a thorough review. I bought my Byrnes table saw in 2016 and it is still working flawlessly even on hardwoods. A couple of points… 1) Mr. Byrnes also sells a version with an extended 18” table. I have that version and find the additional 6 inches to be very valuable. 2) There is no riving knife and so the wood, on thin cuts, tends to fly back towards you. For that reason, I ONLY use the saw with a foot-switch so I can turn off the saw as it cuts through the final fraction of an inch. This will prevent/minimize any fly-back of the wood. 3) In one of your cuts, you use the miter gauge with the wood pressed against the fence. That is very dangerous since the wood can get trapped and break apart. You should only use the miter gauge or the fence, but NEVER both.

This saw is frighteningly expensive and out of reach for young modellers. It is only accessible to well-off people (or singles) or retirees with time and money on their hands. I am puzzled tho': it's not for kit builders, but for scratchbuilders.
Let's say without this tool, nothing prevents you from building kits! But if you are ready to buy tools, it is better not to hurry and not to spend money on garbage-tools, and save enough to buy a quality machine!
If you live in Europe then this saw is too expensive to ship plus the import taxes make it out of reach, you are much better with the Proxxon FET table saw which is cheaper and available in Europe and is equally as good.

Great commentary Olha.
I have owned this saw for over 10 years for making dollhouse furniture and I love it. As a machinist I have gone over it checking alignment, squareness etc. And I am impressed with its accuracy. I couldn't find anything wrong.
The eraser on a pencil makes an excellent push stick. I also use a strip of 1/8 inch Baltic birch with silicon on one edge.
For blades some are screw slotting blades, the thinnest is .008 inches. (From Thurston). This saw will cut down the centerline of a sharpened pencil without breaking the lead. I have made a lot of jigs for this from plexigass since I have a lot of access to scrap. For glue I use glacial acetic acid.
Finally I'll tell you something nobody else knows. This is an American manufacturer, in the description under the video there is a direct link. Because RUclips blocks comments with links to other websites!
Unfortunately Byrnes passed away 2023 and they dont sell these machines anymore. Can you recomend any other quality table saw for modeling?
Unfortunately, yes! And no other manufacturer has managed to create a similar tool with such precision as Jim did! At least from those that I had the opportunity to work with!
@@OlhaBatchvarov how do yo7 feel about proxxon table saw?
Use a push stick for ripping and save your beautiful hands!
Thank you!
Yes, I use extra pieces of wood for this in everyday model building!
Did you ever consider the 18" table version?
I suspect my question was answered somewhat in one of the earlier questions.
When I bought this table saw, a large table was not yet available. But since I work on this tool more than just a modeler, I would choose a big table. Because sometimes it is not enough when you cut large frames or shelves...
Yes, I have similar questions. But this time, over the weekend, while I was at two exhibitions), I have accumulated more than 500 comments and half of them contain questions - I just can not answer instantly...
@@OlhaBatchvarov Thanks so much for your reply. I can only imagine how busy you are. Wonderful models and an excellent channel.
I own one of these and have lost it! I moved house and packed it in a box and put it in a safe place but cannot find it after two years.
I’m so distraught because it cost me $1000 in New Zealand. It had all the accessories as well. I’m still looking🙈
It is sad!
I hope you will find this box!
Hello,
This Serra seems to be pretty accurate. Is it sold on Chinese websites? Thanks
Hі

@@OlhaBatchvarov Thanks
It is safer to put the wider side of the board between the blade and the fence , and use a push stick.
Yes, it is!
But when you need to cut 100-200 planks of the uniform thickness, it becomes much faster the other way. And you must remember about safety. Kick back and etc...
@@OlhaBatchvarov Just please be careful, Please. When you get bored from a repetitive task, it's easy to lose concentration and get careless. I'd hate to see such a charming, attractive lady lose a finger.

I was wondering if anyone is aware of a comparable micro saw available today since there has no indication that anyone is taking over production of the Brynes saw...😣
But at least Jim's family hasn't announced the closure of the company, so there's still hope that someone will save this production. As it happened with the Sea Watch Books publishing house. During the year with the new owner, the publishing house has published several new books and is currently expanding the list of authors...
@@OlhaBatchvarov Thank you, I remain hopeful.🙂

Ohla, Is it true that Mr. Byrnes has passedd away and this saw is no longer availablr?
Unfortunately, yes! Unfortunately, no manufacturer has yet managed to create such an tool with the precision that Jim did...

I can't find any mini saw table that provides a 1/8 Kerf blade. Wasted my money on two products so far. and it appears this, proxxon and microlux don't offer 1/8 kerf blades either. Not useful if I can't match the kerf on my standard table saw for cutting kumiko strips
Check MALCO saw blades
too bad these were great but you can not get now hes passed away
Maybe someone will continue this business!

@@johnwayne1464 you are right...I would buy Byrnes but shipping and import taxes too much...I have buyed a proxxon fet
@John Wayne Well it can certainly get the job done but it is certainly not an equal quality tool (having used both)
DONT EVER PUT YOUR FINGERS SO CLOSE! use spare wood or something, that was very stupid
Thanks for the worry!
Looks like a toy to me
