Making $100K A Year As An Electrician In NYC | On The Job
This was my classmate in apprenticeship school!!!! You looking good V. I'm watching this like this is MY whole local 3 story!!!!❤❤❤ I'm proud of you too, Sis.
And we are proud of you too sis!!! I love seeing relatable people, my people.
You both are awesome sauces I hope this video get more views
Powerful queen's breaking barriers
@Chananja Bryan
We're proud of you too. Keep being an inspiration!
I need a licensed electrician in my rolodex and a woman would be amazing! I’m in NYC with approved plans. I did this in the Army, but I didn’t keep up. Would love someone to connect.
This woman has her G.E.D. and makes more than most people do with a bachelors! Obviously if you don't have a college degree, you have less choices. But there are choices. Never give up!
Absolutely. And what was left out is as an apprentice, you have to work a full day AND go to school at night to learn electrical theory. It's not easy and not everyone makes it. She did though!
Most are walking around with student loan debt for bachelor's ego. And make less money than her. She took the quickest path to wealth in my opinion
@@Krynale
I wouldn't call it bachelor's ego. We were all sold the same story. Get your bachelor's degree. It's the only way. I think people need to look out for kids this age and tell them, "Wait, what do you want to get a degree in? Art history? How much do you think you're going to make when you graduate? Give them a reality check. But none of us know. I know in my case, I just did what my family told me was best. It worked out for me (degree in Mechanical Engineering and make six figures as a programmer). But for many, they've got six figures in debt and not much to show for it. I wouldn't call that "ego". I'd call that being sold a bill of goods.
She still got that job through education. You still need schooling and discipline to do what she does. Her educational accomplishments don’t just consist of a GED.
@@ninam1061
Very true.
Love this! She’s awesome. Beautiful energy.
Respect, this is a legit motivational video to get women outside the hair salons.. thank you.
This is empowering and teaching other young girls like her to step outside the box of doing hair nails and rapping.
It seemed like just whatever until I saw the house... Then it shows her hard work is paying off. And getting a SKILL is so valuable!
Yeah this is awesome
Yes very much so and her stories very relatable.
Energy 👀
Love that she's proud of herself. I'm proud of her, too.
She is 40 waking up at 3am 🙌🏿 the work ethic 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 Her energy and values are such a light.
A little sad too
The trades are a lost art right now. I love seeing this kind of stuff
Yes true everyone wants to be youtubers i'm glad i learnt a few while growing up etc( mechanic, welding, carpentry, machinist, electrician/auto)
That's because most schools aren't even offering electives like this anymore. I wish my school offered this because along with my woodshop skills I could do majority of my own work around the house
I graduate as RAV Mechanic took 2 years degree in trade, my brother is graduate 4 yrs Bachelor I.T and I pay more than him also I pay my own classes and I don't owe any debt LMAO
The trades are not exactly well paying. They make roughly 40k to 50k without benefits or retirement. She's in the very small amount of workers that make that much only because she is union. Don't let people misguided you. Most people in the trades regret joining because they went non union or believed their trade was going to pay a livable wage
@@DaOriginalMurdah I still wanted to be electrician even without her pay cuz I like working with hands and mind. But if I'm not getting living wage how am I supposed to buy the food to give me the energy to be electrician lol! but ifI start off low pay and still with my parents then get a great chance to making livable wage I'm happy!
My wife's uncle is a master Electrician, he retired at age 55. People under estimate the pay and benefits being in the union. It's a great option for those who are avoiding college
In big cities, they can bring in 6 figure salaries. Sometimes I think people would think different of plumbers, electricians etc if they just walked around in suits instead.
@@penname4764 also it's also pictured as hard labor well at first it is hard but it gets easier as time goes on
@@hojaeyun6747 she said the pros don't out way the cons. It's back breaking work and as you age that's really bad for your body. It will start affecting your health as well.
@@tonywasikhongo7510 she said none of the cons out way the pros you heard wrong buddy
@@tonywasikhongo7510 make sure to listen clearly 7:10
Now this is an inspiring profile. Vernica had everything stacked against her but through determination and hard work she rose above the statistics. May she continue to prosper, and her family blessed.
I want to see a "Making It" Video to see how she is spending the 100k per year...
@@flawaii-pines6858 she just said she bought a home, a car and sent her daughter to college
@@ye23. Obviously you have never watched a "Making It" video... Ummm yea I watched the video,,, I know of the home, car, college,,, Making It specifically breaks down her income and expenses.
@@flawaii-pines6858 She's married and most married couples co-mingle their money. Therefore, the spending breakdown of her money alone may not be as easy to do.
@@ilovegoodsax Have you ever watching making it?
Much respect to her for what she has accomplished so far.
The fact that she began her career at a very young age where most of us were club hopping etc is so impressive and now she has 20 years experience and a comfortable salary. She is perfect example of black excellence!
You can start a career AND club hop, too. 😂 It’s called YOUTH!
@@icecreamcake1457 I was thinking the same thing
@@icecreamcake1457 Welp that one went waaaay over your head. Woosh 🤣💀
I know a girl who went to work at general motors straight out of highschool. She's 43 semi retired and recently became an RN. no kids.
Notice that she mentioned she is a UNIONIZED electrician! Americans need to understand that unions are important because they negotiate for better working conditions and livable wages! They are important in Europe while Americans think they hurt them! The corporate brainwashing in America is insane! Also, love her positive energy!
Works both ways, they are supposed to do better for the employees but sometimes unions have b/s politics. Look at South African unions.
So it depends on how well the union is run
@@william_8844 Tf does South Africa got to do with American unions
Exactly! Yet soo many Americans are brainwashed by decades of Republican anti-union propaganda
@@slickrick2420 Your Democrats don’t seem any better. They say they support unions but then they push policies that undermine workers. Didn’t one of your Democratic senators send Pharmaceutical job overseas because his daughter was a pharmaceutical CEO? I think she increased the price of the epipen illegally as well! Cases like that are not common in Europe because our government negotiated drug prices with pharmaceutical companies
They work perfectly in SA chap. Don’t lie.
When she talked about her daughter. That’s how I feel about my kids. It the mirror we need to kick into gear. And the trades are so slept on. You can do really well in a trade and I have so much respect for this type of work.
Great story. Sis is in a male dominated field and still got the gel manicure 💅 while installing wires and getting money. Love it.
A lot of parents who pushed their kids to collect 100,000 in college debt so they could work in an office filling in spreadsheets all day should have heard this woman's story
Millenials were taught if you dont go to college you will end up flipping burgers at MCDS.
This is awesome, I love her spirit, willingness and determination. She is living proof that you can make regardless of your background/ upbringing.
You already 💯💪🏽
I love her energy, her honesty, her journey shows us you can have a tough start but keep going and you can prevail--Bravo to her!
I heard the trade schools are way more profitable than most general degree jobs. This is a smart move because we will always need electricity and it's only going to grow that much more. Congrats on her turning her life into a success from all her struggles.
Lol in a way yes but that's if you're union. If you are not union you'll be lucky if you make your rent payment and good luck getting in a union since they only hire friend and relatives
@@DaOriginalMurdah this guy is wrong lol don’t listen to him
@@DaOriginalMurdah Not really here in Los Angeles is straightforward to get into the union. We have 25-year-old guys making more than 50 dollars an hour with the best health care and the best retirement pension program; all you got to do is be determined and work hard.
@@triguer1 I'm in LA. Was on the laborers waiting list for 4 years and never got called. I was trying to get in the carpenters for 3 years going to jobsites and calling up every contractor on the out of work list.
Currently trying to get in the IBEW since that's the only one here that doing things without knowing someone
Love this! I am a female electrical engineer and hearing Ms Vernica’s experience makes me happy. I have worked with a lot of electricians but I have not come across any female electrician. It takes a lot of persistence, hard work and focus to be in this field but it is rewarding. Ms. Vernica’s story is inspiring and I wish that young girls would look up to people like her.
I am currently at trades school and going to do an apprenticeship as an electrician.I am the only female in my class
Esther Maxim good luck in your apprenticeship and your journey to beckoning an electrician. Ms. Veronica’s story is inspiring and great inspiration to many women and men
@@rafanadal52 Thank you I just finished my last exam for trades school so only have a week left before I graduate and start wiring houses
@@Bessieboo5 shout out to you girl I’m am seriously looking into this!
Work/life balance is important and spending time with your kids. Her work is important and she’s doing an amazing job!
Yes she is. Motivation, determination does it all!
I have so much respect for you Vernica, and others in this business. I wouldn’t last a day in a job where I’d have to get dirty, be around loud invasive noise and on my feet all day. Wish you nothing but success.
I am working on my masters to be a statistician, but we need more trades people! I hate that society painted the image of not going to college as a fail! You go girl! Keep being awesome! Electricians and plumbers are so skilled and amazing!!!!!!
That’s because they make soo much money of college students. From credit card companies, banks, and federal student loans.
Years ago while taking stats I asked the professor a question he couldnt answer. heres the question. " if 30 random people are in one classroom , what is the probability 2 of them have the same birthday ?" ( month and day , not same year)
it turns out the odds are pretty good , but he said it was hard to solve. Maybe he was being lazy. I tried to solve it , or get a guestimate to no avail.
The accent is DEFINED 😭love it
Yep, sounds like the Bronx 😁
I love NYC accents. Each borough has it's own twang.
@@colorfulcodes Your channel is awesome :)
I wish more people did trades. It is SO much better than going $100k in debt for a degree that may or may not translate to value in the marketplace.
Very true. I think most of us are realizing now.
Trades are big $$ here in Australia.lots of trades makes in excess of 100k.
yall are forgetting it took her 20yrs to get there
A J it said that she started working there in 2001. it wasnt until she was accepted into that program that she had a chance to become a journeyman
i try to stay away from absolutes. more ppl should go into trades for sure and college definitely isnt for everyone. but everyone isn't good with their hands or fulfilled by trade jobs. personally, i would be miserable in those vocations. for the good of society, we still need ppl going to college for social and professional reasons. i'm definitely in too much debt, but considering i grew up in a neighborhood straight out of a scene from "the wire", my degrees have completely changed the trajectory of my life, my family's and my future kids'.
Vernica has a great sense of humor and a beautiful spirit. Love seeing these videos of people "making it" in the trades. Our modern world doesn't function without them (laborers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers and more I'm probably forgetting). They're worth every penny.
Stumbled up this and realized I know her. What an incredible story! She is a rockstar!
I dropped out of school my 9th grade year and earned my GED. I got a certificate in Manufacturing and now I'm an certified maintenance technician. I make$23.00 an hour. God 🙏 can turn around any situation in your life.
@@titaniumspecial4207 thanks 🙏❤️
I love how she looks forward to watching Jeopardy after a long day at work. So so sweet
I love her story. I love seeing her get emotional talking about her first daughter. This woman got her GED but makes more than probably most people who graduated with a Bachelor's. Going to college is not the only way. I wish i had been told this growing up
She is amazing! Love her story and the journey she overcame.
LOVE THIS!! Blue collar, woman of colour, unconventional path, beautifully natural and fabulously 40! More of these please!!
Bravo lady, this is so cool. Mad respect that earning 100k and still happy to wake up at 3am to get the job done, she seems so down to earth and understands what is important.
This is great-we need to tell more kids about the benefits of learning a trade if you enjoy working with your hands.
Her commute seems horrific though - over 2 hours. It’s leading her to get 6 hours of sleep max, which is way too little. I hope she’s able to move closer to her job in the future if that would help make her day easier.
No we shouldn't. I hope that in the neat future not a single high school studnet wants to go into the skilled trades. The less of us, the more we make :))
The city is even worse now. A lot of people are moving to Long Island or upstate.
I am pushing my son towards the trade field, I did college and by my second year hated it. Alotnof my friends who went the trade route are still at it and doing well 20 plus years later. Now I am making that move to being a electrician.
Need to teach them the real of society. Real world history how to build credit ect....
I love these stories💗 What a champion for our community! You can do anything you set your mind to here.
It’s what many of the newer generation lacks, the desire to work hard to attain a goal.
i work for the Carpenters Union in CA... I am so proud when I see a woman on the roster for companies. ITs great to see how strong the female presence is in the construction industry, Mom, Wife and Builder!
💪🏾 BX stand up! Amazing story and woman… I’m also an electrician from the Bronx
Love her story!! Such a fine example of not letting the beginning of life, dictate your future!
“Dear mr toilet 🚽 , I am the sh** “
😂😂. Haha I loved that. Congrats
Vernica I’m Proud for you. ❤
I remember when they had trades in high schools for welding, cosmetology, LPN, carpentry, etc.
NYC still has schools like this. Aviation High School and Transit Tech. Go right into the workforce upon graduation.
These still exist pretty much everywhere. They’re called technical or vocational schools.
My brother went a school like this. He started working for the city after high school in the water department. He now drives semi trucks. Very proud of him
Loved this story! It is beautiful seeing people overcome the odds and create a better life for their selves and those around them. I feel proud of this woman and I don’t even know her. Her energy is amazing!!!
She is such a strong human being. She is awesome, one of my NEW S'Hero's. She has accomplished so much more than she could have ever dreamed of. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Love everything about her! This is the American dream! God bless you, Vernica!

What does Local (number) mean?
Hey.... It's a subdivision of a international union ...so a local group of workers from NY for example who belong to a international union...so we could transfer to a different local number in another state... But still be under the umbrella of the international union
Beautiful.....love how you said that having your daughter saved your life - dont know you V, but proud of you - respect!
I really enjoy watching this video, she worked hard, stayed on her purpose and now she is in a better place today!
Congrats to you Vernica!! 👍👏 I'm a recently retired IBEW inside wireman, and being in the IBEW was the best decision I've ever made. Was able to buy investment property, travel the world, and receive a great pension, thanks to the IBEW! Best of luck to you on the rest of your career! Proud of the women in the IBEW!! 👏👍
I’m about to enrol in trade school so this was beautiful timing

Loved this story and I love this series. I’m trying to guide my kids into a successful future career and this series always opens our eyes to path we never thought of.
I LOVED THIS! Please show more jobs like this!
This story made my day! Loved hearing Veronica's story!
I admire this lady. Hardworking to make a good living, and you deserve everything you own!
Great story, as a person with an advanced degree in Medicine I wouldn’t recommend it if I knew about this as a kid I would have did a trade less stress and debt.
Yes, like those multi millionaire southern tradesmen living in mansions.
People saying it ain't any jobs not looking in the right places. I was a licensed barber making over 100k and a customer told me about the carpenters union. I was cutting hair on the weekends working 40-60hrs in the union a week. Props to this lady because women in the union still pull their weight.
What a beautiful and strong mom and woman. Thank you for sharing your story.
Kudos to you Vernica! Inspirational! And you should be proud of yourself - you’re awesome!
V, YOU ARE A WHOLE INSPIRATION!!!
The video doesn’t talk about how hard it is to get into local 3 in nyc. People think no one wants the job. They don’t talk about how long lines people have to stay in to get an application for an apprenticeship and you still get denied. It all comes down to who you know
I think most unions in NYC have lines of people waiting outside. The pay is amazing there, CHI, LA, SEA, and surprisingly in Detroit.
Way to go V! Be proud! you totally made it and deserve it.
So proud of her! I’m from the Bronx too and it can be tough! Great work!
Lol. I'm taken aback by this because Vernica used to be my apprentice. She ain't tell the part about how much of a HANDFUL she was. If she she's this she should reach out to me.

What a great story. You're killing it Vernica!
I’m an apprentice in Utah 7 months in and I’m making 20. By the end of of 2022 I’ll be making 23! Trade is not a bad job!
Love her , she’s amazing n so real , and the skin is glowing. Keep killing it ! I can’t believe she’s 40😊 wow she doesn’t look anywhere near 40 . Beautiful 😻

I really love this!! What a beautiful story and family!!! Congrats to her!!!
Loved this video. What a great opportunity through NEW. Does every State have this program? I love hearing about women in non traditional roles.
Not sure about every state, but I know of programs in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Search up pre-apprenticeship programs for construction in your state and/or local area
It’s awesome to see women in the trades. My dad is a master electrician and wishes more women would take apprenticeships :)
The majority of women don't do trades because they don't want difficult, dirty jobs. It's that simple.
Oh i love this, I just got my tradetest back in July 🤗 I'm now a qualified Rigger.
