Not only did I take lessons for 2 yrs; but I took 4H courses on pasture management for equines, injury prevention through smart environmental management, proper feeding, how to spot early signs of distress, care and cleaning of tack. Plus I devoured everything I could read! There was not a horse within 5 miles of me that did not get a visit from me!

Our kids have flown the coop. I remember days like your when we homeschooled and homesteaded as a family. Let them fly away when they are ready to. We really really thought they’d want to stay and expand our endeavors… but they have their own now. And when you realize how well equipped they are in life because of your efforts to help them learn in childhood… it’s priceless.

Here's an idea for you all as far as a horse for Lily: A lot of lesson barns will let you lease a horse. That way its "yours" to ride and care for each day, but they are still there to supervise, give lessons, etc. I inherited my sister's horse when I was 10 and really couldn't control or ride it until I was in high school. It was kind of a waste. He was cared for but not ridden and trained. So that is my advice until Lily is in middle/high school.

I agree, a lease would be the best next step. Parents aren't interested in learning about or caring for a horse, and she by no means will have all of the knowledge any time soon. She needs guidance that a barn offers.

There are standardized hand signals for moving things with the equipment you have. Since you are wanting to go into the business, you may want to find out what those are for easier communication while on the job. You'd quickly make up your own, but it may be more convenient in future situations if you are using the same signals others are accustomed to.

4-H horse group is a wonderful way for farm kids to learn all things horsemanship. There are horse people who raise, train, cross-train (English & Western) horses and ponies for people just like Lilly. You will need to find people in your area who are knowledgeable horse people who love, care and know horses/ponies. Your county fair is good place to find such folks. My family was one of those families and we knew just about everyone in the county who had such stock. Auctions and sale barns can also be a good place to network. But if there are no adults with this interest, you may need to find a mentor for Lilly...though you may already have. Blessings Abound.

Lilly should continue with her lessons, and see if there is a 4H horse club in your area. It would also be a good thing if she could volunteer at a local stable, to learn the mechanics of horse keeping. No need to lease a horse, her Coach would be the one to assist in finding that first horse. Don’t buy anything for any horse until you have one on the property, especially saddles and other big ticket items. Wait until you have the horse and buy to fit. She’s a horse girl, that need to be around horses will be with her for life. I’m a horse girl, I’m 63, and although I don’t ride anymore, I have a lovely driving pony and carriage.

Here are some lessons I have learned the hard way with horses that I would like to share with Lily:
    1) Never tie your horse up to something with the bridle reins. Use a lead rope attached to the halter. 2) When you go to tie your horse up do not tie them up to a gate or anything else that could bend or fall. It has to be very sturdy.
I am sure your horse lesson teacher has shown you the best knot to use when tying up a horse.
    3) As you are looking for a horse, maybe your instructor can go with you to help you pick out a good one. Horses act quite different when rode in an arena as compared to when they are rode out in the open, like on trails. They also act different when rode alone as compared to when they are with another horse or a group of horses.
    4) To help your horse not get "barn sour" (they want to run back to the barn and become hard to ride away from the barn) do not go faster when riding towards the barn. Trot and/or canter only when moving away from the barn. Also, you could get off your horse other places besides the barn so your horse will not associate the barn with you getting off and maybe getting a treat.

Ask Lily's horse trainer about leasing a horse at her barn. All the the experience of owning a horse before actually buying one. Horses are an expensive hobby and extremely time consuming. For every hour you ride, there are 2 hours other horse duty activities; mucking stalls, grooming, tack maintenance, turning them out, etc, etc, etc. but they are wonderful and I've never met a young girl who learned how to care for and ride a horse that didn't gain amazing confidence along the way.

Clean 55 gal. Drums with lids work great for rat free storage....you could put your bag of chicken feed inside 1 drum, and pig feed in another and a small bag of rabbit feed in the drum with chicken feed. If you just put one sack you can easily clean out drum between new bags...put the drums in your hoop house in a corner with 1 pannel across the front to keep escaped pigs from dumping them. This is so much easier than packing buckets daily. And easier for farm sitters too. Time saved is precious.

LOL, Justin! You just described my life. As a 10 year old girl, I took riding lessons for 2 years and wanted a horse so bad. My dad ended up getting me a donkey mare with a colt for free from a neighboring horse farm when I was 12. Now as an adult, I understand why it was free. The colt was so much trouble, we gave him to our cousin who had a cattle farm ~ the colt donkey broke through the fence and all his cattle escaped down the road! Boy was he mad! The mare wasn't much better. She was not broke to a saddle so I rode her bareback. But she would find any obstacle, usually trees with low limbs, to walk under and knock me off. No matter how hard I pulled on the bridle, she was stubborn and went where she wanted. But I did learn to muck out stalls and be disciplined in feeding and brushing her and cleaning hooves. If I had to do it over, I would not recommend starting with a donkey ~ it wasn't that much fun or satisfying and I got a lot of injuries from her bucking me off, or scraping my back or knees on a tree limb. Unless they are worked with a lot, donkeys can be wild and onry. Some bite. I totally agree with SewingStoryProjects' comment ~ keep up the lessons, work at a horse barn part time, find a great horse mentor and put in the years of experience and knowledge while Lily's body grows bigger. Then, with confidence, knowledge and experience under her belt, she can handle a horse. We have dirt bikes, ATV, and tractors too and I will say, a horse is more dangerous than any of those machines. Because it's unpredictable, even a trained one. Out of the blue, a noise or a clanging metal gate or a dog or a kid running by screaming will spook the horse and then you have a 1,000 - 2,000 lb piece of muscle that can kill you. You want Lily to be as prepared as humanly possible to know what to do in that situation. I'm rooting for her to get a beautiful horse one day, but just not now when she is so tiny and inexperienced. Have a great vacation!

    • @willow8094
      @willow8094 Год назад

The bond that you have with your horse is unbreakable, I was a tiny girl riding and she was safer than someone else's horse. I had many wrecks but not on mine, not ever .They are like a giant dog and your best friend, protectors of there owners. Spooked horses are dangerous but if it's your own you can talk them down and bring them back with gentleness. I certainly wouldn't say this right from the start that they will be this way it takes time to form that bond . Once it's formed there is nothing better in life than having such a beautiful animal and best friend.

    1. Take a lesson every week & get involved in FFA or 4H.
    2. Share board a horse at the lesson facility.
    3. Lease a horse from the lesson facility.
    4. Only after all those then purchase a horse.

Absolutely any horse can be trained in both western and English, l grew up being a competitive rider in English and western competition. In English I rode Hunter on the flat and over fences, at sixteen I did try Jumper but I wasn’t brave enough to jump fences taller than me(even though my horse was capable)
Western I was a games gal barrel racing, flags. I absolutely recommend you use your riding coach to help pick out the best horse for Lilly because not every horse trader is honest and alot try to get rid of the problem ones with bad habits. I rode since I was 9 and was competitive with my barns horses first. My coach said when I could place on any of our barn horses then I could think about owning one😩🤩🤩 Thanks for sharing your time and family with us🤩🤩🤩🤩

Also role on left side that is lie on back then raise his right hand and right leg bent at knee at the same time and then role to left....do 30 reps 2 sets...do for 4-5 days check if it makes a difference. Use force of his pelvic muscles like hips etc.....
If it does make a difference then continue till right oblique feels right and limping goes away...
It doesnot then just strengthen groin and clamshells n hip exercises will do it....rolling exercise will fix pelvic floor imbalance.....if it is not the problem then it is just pelvic muscle imbalance so just normal exercises.

She could use here horse, and not a draft horse, to do work and chores as the boys use the motor bike. Let her have some fun as well as responsibility with something she seems to love. My best friend for years was a horse woman who did some barrel racing and had her first horse when she was 10. You have to have some confidence in her and let her have find some joy in living in a rural setting , otherwise she only sees herself as a farm laborer with no benefits. She is actually more dedicated to her chores than the boys. Joy Giles

I think it's good you will be taking a 2 week break, it will give you time to relax and come up with ideas. It's crazy how much Henry has grown in just the last few months, he'll probably be even bigger when we see you again. Have fun and stay safe on your vacation!

Yep, I was thinking Velcro, too. Just a couple of stick-on squares would be enough.

In my experience it’s not sticky enough for long for sure in the outdoors where rain can be. If they sewed it on it’d probably last but just sticky I wouldn’t recommend

Usually the Velcro pieces stick together better then the Velcro sticks to the plastic so it just pulls apart lol

Lilly could keep a horse journal. Things she learns about horses, what kinds of yearly expenses for a horse, what things she can make instead of buy for a horse, etc. How can that horse pay for itself instead of jusy consuming like pulling wagons, log movers etc. Finding a good homestead breed like some bloodlines of the Morgan breed.

You might want to think of getting a spot man when backing up all machinery to avoid accidents. Btw. Thanks for the information on clips for Greenhouse. I didn’t know you could buy them. My roll ups are hanging on by tape

Red sticky tape at Home Depot would work well on the greenhouse plastic. Jeremy Renner is in the hosp in critical condition bc he got hurt while using his skid that he used 1000 times. Training isnt a bad idea, as the kids havent even driven cars on the street yet (experience). Having worked for a huge Fortune 500 company with large equip, they always used spotters, red flags etc bc that equip is dangerous in more ways than you can imagine.

I have been training horses for 50 years and if y’all are looking fir a horse for Lilly. Check out one that is between 12-15 years old. A good retired show horse. If you get a western style horse you can ride English with that horse but sometimes you can’t ride an English horse western due to the different weight of tack and they do not neck rein

Hi Justin, greetings from Thailand, I have a small farm with rabbits and chicken as well as racing pigeons even tough I spend most of my mornings collecting left over veggies from the local market and restaurant leftovers for the chickens I still spend a awful lot of money on on feed for the rabbits chickens ans Pigeons. This is a subject you should cover in on of your VDO’s so that people who want to get involved in animal farming with little land will face quite a lot of financial spending. People who think to be independent on feed may unfortunately realize that the cost involved in feeding cannot make you or your family sustainable for a very longtime.

Good thing the boys did get to use the track loader for the hay stacking. Busy day. I hope then new ratio of hamburger tasted better. Too bad the tallow makes it taste gummy. That is sad that it kind of wrecked your home raised beef! Thanks for the Homesteading class Justin and Rebekah! It was great! I'm so glad your shoulder feels fine Justin. Thanks for this Rhodes family!

A better idea for your chicken problem is stick on velcro. It sticks on and is long lasting and works really well without putting holes into your plastic. Also, with your renovations, why don't you put a commercial kitchen dishwasher upstairs AND downstairs instead of 2 dishwashers upstairs? The commercial kitchen dishwasher will take up less space and also wash faster.

Have you used it outside? It hasnt ever stayed properly for me. It sticks better to itself then it does to the plastic for sure if there is moisture involved

    • @melw3518
      @melw3518 Год назад

@@jus.me.tanzks5834 yes I use it outside and inside. I use the largest one I can find for outside and make sure the plastic is fully dry before sticking to it (so I do it after the full sun has been hitting the plastic for a few hours). My only issue is when it's really hot (over 110 degrees) it can slide slightly so I used a little superglue and have had no issues with that one since then. The others are fine as they aren't in full direct sunlight for too long.

Just a suggestion as I am so worried about Mr Brown or Mr Henry getting rolled over. Maybe a rule that the boys never ever crank and move without a spotter for safety reasons. Back up camera's do have blind spots. Know your blindspots.
