if you deside to paint the drums go with Rust-Oleum grill/fire pit high temp gloss black in the green/ white can from walmart. I put on a nice even thick coat and have had the drums on for a week now on my truck an the paint has not baked off or flaked off. I'm going to have to tear down the top half of of my slant6 and I'm going to see if this paint will still look good on the exhaust manifold.
Great install! It can be a job for sure. But it’ll be a whole new truck with that gear! If you lived closer, I’d buy that old Rearend for my blue truck. Maybe better suited for the slant 6 😅
Most of my 8.25" D150s are 2.93/2.94 geared with 904 trans' and 3.55 with o/d trans' (833 or A500/518), but I have a few that are 9.25 with 3.21s for some reason. Never had a 2.71 in anything that I remember, closest thing was a 2.76 (8.75") in a '71 SportFury 383. I had a '78 LeBaron with a 2.45 and a '81 NewYorker parts car with a 2.20 SureGrip though!! LOL
Yee hah, found a 727 and an 8 3/4 from a fellow up in Davenport iowa to go with the 360 la im rebuilding, swapped in a 8 1/4 and a 904 and a 225 in a 47 1 ton dodge ive been driving around a couple years now, gonna replace that tired 225 with the classic mopar setup 360 227 8 3/4 im cooking up, thanks for all the time you put in on your videos
I’ll be doing that swap in my D100 also, except it’s a 9 1/4 to an 8 3/4, and use the 9 3/4 backing plate like you did, but I was surprised to see that the 9 1/4 only has 4 studs holding on the backing plate. I hope I can drill the bottom hole in the backing plate and that the other 4 holes line up. Looks like they will but I sure wasn’t expecting that lol!
The dead pan humor makes my day! The bolt that holds the brake block on the 8 3/4 is also the breather for the axle same as my 9 1/4 on my ramcharger but use a long hose for 4 wheeling in water..... The 8 1/4 has a breather on the passenger side like a tube ....the HFT chief extended reach cut off tool makes short work of the u-bolts and I have a dolly specifically for the job that hold the pinion from roatating....cost all of $10 to weld up junkyard find!... If I ever get my energy back I'll swap out my open 9 1/4 for a sure grip version in my 87 ramcharger should be an interesting video....lol spit included!
Looking good bro. Nice work! My 8-3/4 rear didn't go as I hoped. The perches were too narrow. Gotta cut em' off and put new ones on. I hope the new gear ratio gives u what u want at the track. Good luck my friend and thanks for posting. I always enjoy your videos.
when you took that diff cover off I could smell that part of your video. should have warned people about the smell if they are doing this with an old rear.
Did you find an 8 3/4 housing that was a bolt in or did you have to start over and weld on spring perches to match your leaf springs? My old 8.25 is so worn out I measure the back lash with a yard stick.
I’ve been on the fence about building up my 8-3/4 in my truck or going to a Dana 60. I like the idea of swapping in a highway gear so I can more easily drive to a far away drag week event or power tour, then swap in the higher pumpkin. But I know that the Dana 60 is much more sturdy than the 8-3/4. Maybe with a truck there isn’t enough traction to break an 8-3/4 I dunno.
Thanks for watching. Depends how violent (traction, 4 speed) and how much power you'll have on tap. These trucks came with 8.25 mostly for the D150's/100's, and they held up well to hauling or pulling moderate loads. 8.75 is stronger, but the Dana 60 is the way if you are pushing serious power.
Ive run into the problem where the little bolt that hold the pin broke off. Tried buying an extraction kit.. Of course it was for chevy and ford sized ones.. My 7 1/4 is pretty wore out. And i think my one side has a axle bearing on its way out. But there isnt a way i have found to get the section of broken bolt out. Its dangerous too because only like a thread is holding it and the pin in. I tried hammering the pin out. Made things worse...
I've not had one break, but that would be an issue for sure. It's a bad place too, for trying to extract. I wish i had an answer for you but i don't. I will say, that's a disaster waiting to explode, I'd have a reputable service garage get that removed, regardless. Best of Luck !!
I think it may have broke as a result of a severe sideways curb strike on ice doing about 30mph years back. Bent my k frame to hell. Had to drop it and replace the whole thing. Atleast m bodies every part of the front end is attached to it. Only 4 bolts hold the whole deal in. The rear hit really hard too. But didnt seem to bother anything. Except maybe that bolt... I am a mechanic and even at the shop i couldnt get this thing out. The angle makes it very hard. I orderd a long reverse cut cobalt drill bit that i am going to try next. But the damn thing is made of super hard steal. Drill bits just wont bite it! I drove the car on the highway to work for months like this! Haha
I picked up a e-body 8 3/4 for my truck it’s 3” narrower so it brings in each side 1.5” but it shouldn’t be a problem might even gain some room for bigger tires we’ll see
It's sitting as it would from the factory. Pickups are challenge to get traction with as they are light in the back, terrible weight transfer. Obviously the manufactures were thinking of hauling/towing. So it will burn the wheels off, unfortunately I want it to hook up and go !!! 😀
I am just about to re-swap my 9.25 (3.90) to 8.25 (2.96). The original swap from 8.25 I had a shop do it and I recall he said he used my axles from the 8.25 to the 9.25. I know he did not change the brake assemblies so I am guessing they will work on the 8.25? Does that all sound right?
have a 52 Dodge Piolot house but it screams at 45-50mph ! I heard a Ford Ranger rear end can be swapped for better gear ratio . Any help would be appreciated !
It made sense in this case because one of the factory axles had twisted splines. Also, you have to have green bearings (which can be installed on the factory axles) with a spool and the longer studs than the lugs used (also can be installed on the factory axles) to pass tech.
@@318willrun okay thanks for the honesty I did a swap to my 90 s10 to a 2004 rear. So wondered if dodge would. Besides working on boats I'm new to Chrysler products
Does the '84 have an 8.25 rear?? If so (which I believe it does), it is fairly common to swap out the drums to a disc setup using 1995 to 1998 Grand Cherokee calipers and other associated hardware ( Doesn't take much modification at all). The e brake is the only thing that has to be really thought out. There are ways to do it though. I'm getting ready to do this on my' 42 Dodge truck which has the 8.25 swapped in. The GC parts are fairly cheap as well. If you find a '95-98 GC in yard, grab all the parts including the calipers (for cores).
@@DR440 thank you. Mines auto not to worried about the e brake my s10 hasn't had one in 2 years but its something I still need to do. So the Cherokee brakes with brakes should work? Could I just weld leafsprig perches on the Cherokee axle in attempts to get a Dana in the process
My 2004 Dakota has rear disc brakes and is a 9 1/4. That’s a pretty stout upgrade over an 8.25 and the pinion to axle centerline is exactly the same, so the driveshaft is the same. Mine is a 3.92 gear with posi, too, and with those trucks being overdrive, many have nice gear ratios. Yards are full of them. Honestly, I don’t know why more people don’t use those as swap axles. The Jeep Cherokee has an 8.25 and some had posi and decent gears, but the housing has all the wrong brackets.
That is going to be a major difference and I love the added humor, nothing better than a good laugh

Wondering why the diff is mounted under instead of over the springs.
Great question, and you are observant! It is because pickup trucks are under the leaf springs, helps raise the truck up.
