I'm Yousur Al-Hlou, the lead producer on this short documentary from The New York Times. Along with my co-producer Masha Froliak and the cinematographer Benjamin Foley, we spent two weeks reporting in and around Zaporizhia, in southeast Ukraine, capturing the toll of relentless Russian shelling on civilians.
We traveled to three frontline communities surrounded by Ukrainian troops on one side, and Russian troops on the other. In Orikhiv, we witnessed just a sliver of what these communities are experiencing daily, when three shells, one after the other, landed about 100 yards away from where we were conducting an interview.
Our editor, Mark Boyer, and senior producer, Hanaan Sarhan, helped us craft an intimate and chilling story about what it's like to be caught in a war.

I feed a lot of cats round near me they just come into house probably 10 to 15 of them and one has adopted me and moved in I love them tho

Reminds me of my own babushka and her house out in the suburbs, used to take in every animal in the neighborhood before the pound would even get to them.
I hope they reach the border or another Ukranian city safely if Russia moves in that town.

I keep watching these videos with tears in my eyes, what did they ever do to deserve this? Imagine losing your house, blown to pieces, you survive perhaps, but what you worked for is all gone in flames. And don't ever imagine that there is some miraculous help to rebuild, or insurance, there isn't.
Just like the whole infrastructure of Ukraine, bombed to dust, while this country is a key player to the world economy. Forget the gas prices, see what's going to happen without the food that they are usually producing, it will be chaos next winter.
This could happen to any other country close to Russia. Putin needs to be stopped as soon as possible.

What an amazing woman staying with the animals returning the loyalty our pets shows us ❤️. END PUTINS WAR
On 2 April, my 78 year-old dad managed to escape from Russian-occupied Tokmak located in the area shown in this video to Zaporizhzhia. He drove with our cat Lucky through the fields along the back roads until he reached Vasylivka, where he picked up a local family who were cautiously trying to escape too - a couple in their early 30s with 2 small kids (4y.o. girl & 2y.o. boy). Their car was broken and they said they'd already spent several hours there on the side of the road without any luck - every passing car was already full to the ceiling. Overall, 100km from Tokmak took him 8 hours. The real hero of the day was Lucky who stoically endured the whole road tense and distressed, yet quiet.
My heart goes out to you wonderful people of Ukraine be strong and stay strong good will prevail.

I have watched a lot of war footage from Ukraine and felt that I had become desensitized to it, however was brought to tears several times while watching this video (and I consider myself a tough, "bullet-proof" kinda guy who doesn't get affected by much). I have elderly parents too, and my heart broke for these people; innocent, elderly rural-living civilians caught up in a savage war that has nothing to do with them. I pray that it will all be over soon...

I nearly cried seeing a father die on the road as his son was doing a video behind the car after being fired at by Russian soldiers. It was horrific and sad indeed.

What a great tragedy for humanity. How much pain did I feel watching this short documentary. The only wish is that they survive. What a deep sadness.
I this to the elderly who has seen the worst of the worst in WW2 came to town and they are resigned to their fate at their homes and with their children. Also to the woman who is taking care of the animals that were abandoned has a kind heart and that is lacking these days especially during this conflict.

I watch a lot of videos of this war and I feel frightened for the civilians trapped and grief for those injured or have lost loved ones and I am in awe of the courage of the soldiers and civilians standing up to the intruders. The First Lady of Ukraine recently said requested of the West not too become complacent of the Ukrainian plight.
This documentary is so powerful, it represents the reality of surviving an ongoing war on a daily basis. These people are just regular people like the rest of us. In the end the common folk are the ones who suffer the most of all. This is the brutality of war, it always has been, but when we learn in history or even with the old footages from the world wars, they focus on specific battles and the regular people are mostly mentioned as statistics, X amount of people died, woulnded etc. which we know it's bad but it's very disconnected compared to recent times and especially now for first time we can actually see what war really does with extensive footage who is affected the most and what majority of the people are going thru.
My problem with glorifying or romanticising old wars and battles was always this, nobody thinks of what all these people who were caught in the middle of a battle or war went thru. People had the same feelings and emotions no matter if it was 50 years ago or 1000 years ago.

Thank you to the journalists getting in harms way to show us what it’s like to live during a war. The elderly have seen one too many wars in their lifetime, this shouldn’t happen again for them and all Ukrainian ps. @@james6401 Separatist should have ceased fire since that was the 1st point signed on the Minsk Agreement -you can't break and agreement and expect it to be implemented, it doesn't work like that. But we all know that Russia has no word and their signatures in agreements and memorandums mean nothing to them either because they are just liars, looters and murderers

It's terrible to see people in such conditions. The war criminals of Ukraine will be held accountable in court for the unleashed war in 2014 against their own population, which led to the fact that Russia stood up for the protection of this population, which the Ukrainian criminal authorities wanted to destroy, which forced Russia to complete demilitarization of Ukraine.

that lady who feeds the neighbors dogs is literally a living saint, imagine being in that situation, where food is probably hard to come by as is, and still you care for the animals in your town, not like the russians, theyve been eating dogs because theyve been running out of food, basically they are like animals.
I was actually just thinking that - if the Russians come 5km closer, these dogs will all be killed and eaten.
