Hang on the metal music and autism connection makes sense because rocking can be a form of metal head banging, screaming and strange noises are good and ok, also sometimes you want loud music to drown out all the other noise, and metal music is usually on the fringes of society like neurodivergent people are and songs are often about some form of oppression whether it's internal or external. So he's got a point.

I don't have autism but I'm 90% sure I have ADHD (undiagnosed) and I can agree that metal is my favorite genre and helps me focus/stay calm and get shit done. I have fallen asleep to it before lol

Off topic but this reminded me of the time I had to use metal as white noise to drown out the neighbor's annoying dog that wouldnt stop barking at night so I could sleep for a few weeks. It was either that or I lashed out at the owners for not bringing the damn thing indoors (was in high school then for context and already not getting enough sleep). It feels weird to listen to music *without* headphones now bc it's primarily a medium to keep me from actually going insane. Alot of us are night owls and/or introverted because most people aren't awake doing construction at midnight, at the expense of being constantly sleep deprived and even more irritable... its a vicious cycle.

Nah man, the fae at least play fairer than that. Yes, they will trap you in a prison of words, but there is a chance to see past the trick and actually solve it. They would give you riddles with a non obvious, slightly contradicting answer, but they would still give the questions. The fae are WAY easier to unserstand than NTs.

I feel like we're the Fae to NT people and the NT people are Fae to us. Neither of us understand how the other think (ex. A few years back my mother started warning me that "you don't get Christmas as an adult" then asked me what I want for Christmas this year. I was confused, she said I don't get it now?) and while NTS not communicating clearly confuses us, they seem to think everything is a "hint" and that we want something from them, so we probably feel like a riddle to them too

It leaves a bunch of space in between the stitches, so it's really textured but it's still soft. I like rubbing and hugging it to sleep.

For a lot of ND people, sensory issues can manifest in the form of being a "picky eater". Things like taste, texture, smell, form of a food can make it really hard to eat.
And guess what? Taste is a sense! Ability to sens texture in your mouth is a sens! Smell is a sens!
Anyway, that's how I realized all my least-favorite foods have bad textures.
PS: "internal" senses can also be affected by sensory issues.
E.g. : not being able to feel when you're hungry or thirsty.

my dr acknowledged that there's "something going on" with me, but didn't want to specifically say autism because I'm a concert addict that goes to live shows A LOT, so she said because I enjoy loud music in a large public space with lots of people, that alone completely wipes out the possibility of me having autism... also because I'm "very good at speaking" to her (???) even though she's seen me go nonvocal in several other situations where it wasn't just her and me alone and I had other people and stressors that caused me to be overwhelmed and shut down. literally multiple sessions of her saying "oh you're a completely different person today" or "I don't recognize this person you are today" like ??? just put it on the ding dang paper, doc, I need to move on with my life

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese 2 года назад +10

That's terrible reasoning. That might be a good doctor and maybe they didn't communicate their reasoning very well, but enjoying concerts and loud music does not magically mean that autism isn't a useful label for your experience. I'm not saying they suck or that you need a new doctor, there are many factors to weigh, but I don't agree with their reasoning explained here and I would encourage you to talk to them further about it and ask them to clarify their reasoning to you so that you can get a more satisfactory explanation. If they're unwilling to do that, or bad at doing it in a way that meets your needs, then it's time to consider a new doctor.

The second one, about accommodations (internalised ableism specifically), is so relatable. I got my ADHD diagnosis two months ago, and I have less than one month left of high school. The first recommendation from my psych was to apply for disability provisions for my final exams (extra time/break time and separate supervision) and I struggled so much with the idea because I'd done fine without them so it felt like I didn't deserve them. But now that I'm sitting my practice exams (with provisions) it's so great, I have the chance to have a break to allow myself to refocus and there's only 10 people in the room instead of 130 so there's a lot less anxiety as well.

I think an example of how this plays out in an ND person is a lot of time we think "but like, it doesn't affect my life" but it does. *not trying to invalidate you BTW, but this could help you figure out which scenario it is for you.* for me I couldn't compare my life to an ND life (which I _am_ living) because to my knowledge at that point I wasn't living one. It is still hard for me to compare my life to an NT life, because that is not one I've ever had.
*Tbh*, I think it comes down to two things NT society teaches us
*1)* we judge identities by how they affect _others_ [grades, social life, and whatnot]
*2)* otherwise, you are told to make these status-quo assumptions about _yourself_ as well [and others] [this also applies to when I believed I was cisgender because I didn't "fit" trans images before realizing that my being a woman is not me being a binary woman]

I would like to build on the last person's comment of "it still affects your life even if you're unaware of it", that effect can be minimal too! It took until I was 17-18 for my mother to even consider the possibility of autism, let alone a diagnosis, and she only looked into it when my niece was formally diagnosed. I'm not the "stereotype autistic", and because she had limited experience with autistic people, she didn't believe autism could come in other forms. I'm verbal, I can move unaided (although things like the oven scare me and I won't use them), and aside from the anxiety I seem neurotypical, but the thought of me being autistic wouldn't leave my head. As we looked more into it, we realised a lot of my behaviour seemed to line up *too* well, everything from me liking spicy food to my constant "fidgeting" (stimming) to the constant reading of research papers that interested me. Eventually I got a referral for diagnosis, and since then we've realised that not only am I autistic, there's a high chance most of my nieces and nephews have autism, ADHD, or both. One of my brothers definitely has untreated ADHD (he was diagnosed with "hyperactivity disorder" in the 70s-80s and insists "nothing is wrong with (him)" which like, yeah, nothing IS wrong, you just think different bud), one is likely autistic, and one of my sisters wants to be investigated for ADHD.
Point is, it can affect your life indirectly by influencing things like the food you eat or the music you listen to. Autism shouldn't be defined in anyone's mind by the effect it has on people.

Ok so I have a guilty pleasure in the form of "The Good Doctor" because it's one of the only shows I've found with autistic main character that I like and with the GLARING exception of the voice he uses, I think Freddie Highmore play Shaun phenomenally.
I also really like the writing but one thing I always found a bit odd was in the beginning (basically just season 1) there's a constant feeling of ableism towards Shaun ESPECIALLY early on from the head of surgery of course since character development is a thing this doesn't happen long
If you haven't seen the show it goes a bit like this:
Character: *find out Shaun has autism or knows from the beginning and treats him differently due to this fact*
Shaun: *proves them wrong and shows he's just as capable as anyone else if not more*
Character: *surprised Pikachu face* ok sorry message received I will try to do better in future
Rinse and repeat about once every 3 episodes give or take. And I always thought that seemed a bit unrealistic... then I watched the clip at 13:26 and oof how wrong was I mean for fucksake an IQ test?? really?!
So yeah all this to say I used to think I didn't put the fact that I was autistic on my CV because of the Good Doctor but it turned out I just had SPECTACULAR clairvoyance

i LOVE that show holy shit. i was always so irritated for the majority of season one because of the way they just completely disregarded his abilities and always tried to do things for him when he was capable of doing it himself. he proves himself again and again and again and again and its the same thing. they forget all about it and disregard him. it gets better with time but it was so frustrating to watch.

    • @pyromaniac2104
      @pyromaniac2104 2 года назад +5

@@grimm6176 I do need to give them props for not having characters Relapse after they've figured out Shaun is a competent doctor for example there's one scene I distinctly remember near the end of season 1 where the two new doctors have come in (the obscenely competitive girl and the former cop). they're having an important discussion about what to do about a patient while Shaun is both listening and pacing around the room looking for something and here's the part I really like the trio who have been there since episode 1 are just brushing it off like "yeah we know Shaun is listening and if we try to stop him pacing we know he won't listen so just let him do his thing" meanwhile the two new doctors are like "is he even listening, why is he pacing around so much"
Another good example is the aforementioned chief of surgery, at the beginning he is one of the people railing hardest against Shaun being hired by the hospital so much so he makes a bet with his mentor where the stakes are the mentors job. Cut to a good chunk of episodes or a season later and there's a fundraiser happening for the hospital which Shaun needs to attend (any of my fellow introverts, autistic or not, can relate how unpleasant this is) and at this party Shaun ends up being swept up into a conversation by some important money giving people and he's doing communication but he is SERIOUSLY STRUGGLING until out of all people the *chief of surgery* comes to give him a hand... so what happened between episode 1 and that party? The answer: both character development and he saw shaun at work saving lives and acknowledged he was wrong
My point is what is annoying that they need to go through the whole rigmarole routine of doubt, proving and respect I absolutely fucking adore the fact that they don't do it with any one character more than once

She also turns on tvs during the middle of conversations (??? Idk) and has these awful fairy lights that fade in and out nicely then go all rave like for 30 seconds before fade mode again. Great for someone with auditory processing issues and light sensitivity.
Basically, you can try explaining to your mother how it feels, how her getting upset at you makes you feels etc, and talk it out, or if you've gone past that point and she's not willing to listen, just tune her out. Build your own coping strategies for overstimulation (head/earphones you could carry at all times, fidget toys etc) and just block her out. If she isn't willing to help you cope, she shouldn't have any say in how you feel afterward. Its sad, but a lot of autistic people are forced into coping with the world independently because parents only want to make it worse.
If she's a good parent, she will listen to you. I found luck with the "if I broke my leg, would you help me or force me to walk on it?" metaphor. Hopefully this is ignorance and nothing more. If not; she is no longer entitled to your time, emotions or effort.
      Hope this helps!

i remember seeing a study that did brain scans on autistic and allistic people and it showed that the brains of autistic people reacted differently to pain in both directions (more and less sensitive)
for the autistic people who felt less pain it showed the similar areas of the brain lit up but the duration of the signal was completely different. the pain signal stopped firing much quicker for certain autistic patients than the ND ones. super interesting stuff.
TL;DR yes it is possible, at least according to one study i read 6+ months ago lol

Sensory differences to my knowledge are classified as either *hypersensitivity* which means experiencing a lot of something, and the potential pain result is sensory *issues* (hyper like in hyperenergetic) and *hyposensitivity* or experiencing very little of a sensation (hypo like in hypoallergenic or hypothermia)

7:09- i have a sensory issue with like... coordination. i have no fucking clue whats going on with my limbs, especially my feet. i forget i have hands. i cant kick something unless i focus super hard. i can walk fine, but i wander all over the place. my balance is decent and i dont have tremors or anything, but i just cant make motions that require keeping track of limbs well. if more than one is involved it just overwhelms me. i cannot dance at all because of this

also picky eating is absolutely 100000% a sensory thing its nothing to do with being spoiled and i will stand by every fussy child. i have a v sensitive sense of taste and smell (i can smell drinks from across a room, if a food has been cooked i can smell it in the room for literally weeks especially if i dont like it, everything tastes super strong to me) and its fine if i like the taste (like i enjoy some pretty strong things, i dont get overwhelmed by them) but if i dont then it is physically impossible to put it anywhere near my mouth. peas, tomatoes, peppers, are all the banes of my existence. it is traumatic to force kids to eat things while theyre literally gagging and crying because its NEAR THEM i dont understand why its so hard to understand. exposure therapy can work (im working on tomatoes cause theyre in EVERYTHING) but not when ur a child who is overhwhelmed by the concept of a tomato its not gonna work

Somehow she doesnt seem to register that i am a textural eater, and the gross frozen pre-made chicken patties that you cooked for dinner taste like im eating a sponge. Same with sushi and mochi, i cannot eat sushi because the seaweed makes me gag, and mochi tastes awful to me because of the powder they put on it. Im also a tomato hater, and every fucking time i bring up the fact that i dont like tomatoes, my family gives me a weird look, like!!!! Leave me alone!!! I hate their taste and texture!!!
I am also ridiculously sensitive to smells. Ive always described it to other people as having sensitive lungs, because if i smell something thats too strong or too foul, then i will start gagging and coughing and feel like i cant breathe. My mom cleaned the microwave with apple cider vinegar once and i was the only person in the entire house that couldnt stand the smell, i had to stay in my room for the rest of the day and i could still smell it in there !!!!

i also incorp my stims into text and ill sometimes say things like "weeb woob" (woob is a running joke in my science class) or "beep boop" "boopadoop" "weeble wooble" and it's fun

body awareness and balance are also senses! you can have sensitivity issues going either way in either of them, that's why spinning is such a common stim (for those of us with a balance hyposensitivity) and why we're often clumsy as hell (combination of the two, hypo or hyper) and why we uh. sometimes accidentally hit ourselves. like i did while stimming a couple seconds ago - hyposenstive body awareness (i believe that hypersensitive body awareness can make people feel much more protective of their personal space, same as hyposensitivity makes us invade other people's personal spaces, and balance hypersensitivity can make people feel dizzy or nauseous really easily, but please do your own research because i know much more about my own symptoms here)

So I had this thing where sometimes when people say something I’d have to count how many letters their sentence had, and figure out if it was an odd or even amount of letters, so I would literally just stand there trying to figure out how many letters “hippopotamus” has while they would scream at me for not ever listening to them
