Perfecting the TREMEC TKO 2 3 Shift

  • One of the biggest misconceptions regarding the TREMEC TKO 5-Speed on the forums is having trouble going from 2nd to 3rd. The shifting characteristics of the TKO are different than say a Muncie, Ford Toploader or Mopar A833. When you shift the older 4-speeds, you would go over and up to 3rd gear or just shove it over if you were really beating on it. With the TREMEC TKO, you want to go straight forward with an open palm. The SST shifter mechanism will help guide you right into gear!

    I was having an issue shifting 2,3 and as you explained and the shifter bias springs were very weak. I replace it with a newer update shifter unit from your company with stronger springs and now shifts very nice. Thanks for the video

    what bothers me is that the TKO600 has a flaw and the manufacture treates the public like we are stupid. Own up to the problem come out with a fix at a reasonable price and be done with it.

    This is why 4 speeds are so much faster at shifting, but it looks like your shifter helps the issue

    How does your sst shifter compare to other after market shifters and how can I acquire one?

    Hey Jeff I'm having this issue in my TKO 600 in my foxbody. As an almost daily driver it shifts flawlessly but at the track it's horrible and Unpredictable. I shift it at 5600rpm and weather it's a quick shift or a power shift more often then not it will hit the wall and not let me into third (no gear grind). I'm shifting exactly as you demo in your videos but same result.....Please help!!!
    Thanks Joe

    I think the emphasis on this being driver error fails to address weak bias springs as a prime contributor. I regularly have trouble going into 3rd when shifting my low-mileage TKO-600 quickly (sourced via now-defunct brand "K"), and it's not because I'm used to driving a 4-speed. My daily driver is a 5-speed mid-'80s BMW with a Getrag G265, and I shift it exactly as this video suggests -- pushing straight forward with an open palm when going 2-3. I also go from 5-4 in my BMW by pulling back and letting it find 4th, but if I try that with the TKO-600, I grind reverse, so I have to both pull back and push towards the center. Thus, in my case, I'm quite certain it's not driver habituation (known in aerospace/human factors as "negative transfer").

    I have had problems getting my TKO600 to do the 2-3 up shift. Following your suggestion, using my palm, it seems to line up the gear now, but it grinds when going in. If I’m driving normal, I never have a problem, as soon as I get heavy into the throttle (5,500-6,500 rpm range) that 3rd gear has problems. When I shifted “my original way” I get that “lockout”, when I tried your suggestion, it grinded the gear. Any suggestions?

      When a customer calls with these issues, we have them check a few things first because it could be one or more of these things causing it.
      1. Did you measure your bellhousing runout and correct it if it was out of spec? Did you perform the runout again with the new dowels and verify that the runout was within spec?
      2. What was your throwout bearing or cushion measurement? Proper clutch engagement/disengagement is a must.
      3. What fluid are you using? TREMEC only approves of a select few, others can corrode the synchronizers.
      4. Have you had any difficulty getting into 1st gear?
      If you like, you can call us with your issue and the answer to these questions and we will help you diagnose and correct the issue. 888-609-0070

      @@SilverSportTransmissions I bought the car used, but have receipts for everything installed by a local performance shop. I hope the got everything within spec when installing. I will start with the easiest first being the clutch adjustment.. If I still have issues I will for sure give you guys a call, I have been looking at your short shifter for this transmission. Thank you!

    So is it the same from 4th to 5th or do you have to go over then up,
    like the H pattern ?

    • @SilverSportTransmissions
      @SilverSportTransmissions  3 года назад +3

      If you go straight from 4th, you'll be in 3rd gear. You need to push to the right and up to hit 5th. The reason you don't have to push to the right from 2nd to 3rd is because the springs are doing it for you, 3rd is in the center and the springs are keeping the shifter centered.

    • @427HISS
      @427HISS 3 года назад

      Too bad the spring isn't there for 4th and 5th as well, but you really not trying to shift fast into 5th overdrive like 1st through 4th. Thank you !

    What would keep you from accidentally grabbing 1st gear on a 2-3 shift using this technique?

    • @SilverSportTransmissions
      @SilverSportTransmissions  5 лет назад +2

      There are springs in the shifter mechanism that return the shifter to the center gate, when you push straight forward, the springs guide you to the center gate and 3rd gear.
