  • Late spring and early summer can seem like a dead zone for birding as species end their migration and settle in for breeding. However, in late May a few rarities decided to visit the Wisconsin lakefront. Join Ryan as he looks for a rare Red Knot, Laughing Gull, and Franklin's Gull.
Filmed in late May of 2022.

My favorite birding channel. I’ve been trying to learn the different gulls passing through Minnesota.

There is this about summer, while you may not see many new birds, you do get to watch your local flocks be silly. At least that's most of what we did this summer - we've got three or four Gray Catbirds who have just clowned around SO much, plus a very chatty Brown Thrasher. There are blue jays and mockingbirds in the neighborhood but for whatever reason they didn't come to our yard as much this summer. And! A Red Shouldered Hawk - juvenile, but he keeps coming back to the tall pine in our yard. Even though the Catbirds then harass him for a bit, hah!
I keep hearing a Barred Owl but I've yet to actually get eyes on that one, for obvious reasons :P

Red knots are mainly a winter bird here in the Carolinas. I don’t recall ever seeing one that was really red, but they are still pretty birds. Laughing gulls are the only gulls we have in the summer, so that makes them easy to identify! I want to go spend a day birding at the beach too!

Great job on the terns and gulls, Ryan 😊 Congrats on the Red Knots🤗 I definitely can concur and sympathize with summer can be boring 😮 Waiting for the warblers to stop in Connecticut on their way back down South 😂 Happy Birding 😊

Wow. Living in California I've never seen a Laughing Gull or a Franklin's Gull. I'm going to Florida next month and am looking forward to seeing some new species.

You'll get a lot of new species. Anhinga, Laughing gull, grey kingbird, tricolored heron, etc.

@Fire_2000 I can't wait. I'm literally driving down the Gulf Coast and up the Atlantic Coast. I've never seen any of those birds or a Roseate Spoonbill. Hoping also to see Pinky the Flamingo or one of the newcomers in the wild.

@@lisapolanski9379 that sounds amazing. I've gone birding on both sides of Florida but never did the whole drive around. It sounds amazing. You'll definitely get lots of lifers.

Good spot! The clip was from the coast, not Wisconsin :) sometimes when we’re talking about the species itself we include media we took from different places.
