    Because of you guys I started doing this myself too. I ended up with 62 species on new years day my first being a house sparrow at my feeders. You guys do amazing work and I hope you continue to get better. My highlight was a very rare Western Grebe 😂that was on my local river in Dayton Ohio and a White-winged Scoter at my local state park. Great video!

    I had 31 species this year, first being American Crow. Didn't go all out, and there were 3 more sites I could've gotten a few more ticks at. Oddly enough for central IL no house finches or sparrow the first day.

    It's amazing how common House Sparrow is in the US. It has declined or disappeared in many areas. I saw 69 species in my New Year's Day bird count and have now seen 85 this year but still have yet to see one.

    I spread my Jan 1st birding over 2 days; On the 1st, I drove 2 hours to bird along Lake Champlain (western VT), bagging 36 species. Today, I drove 2 hours in the opposite direction, to bird along the NH seacoast. (My car was in for service on the 2nd). Total for the 2 days was 56 species, including 1 Lifer (Razorbill), and 4 rarities: Iceland Gull, Wood Duck, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and 2 Orange-crowned Warblers. Unfortunately, several of the rarities I'd seen on the 30th could not be relocated today: Harlequin Duck, Virginia's Warbler, Ash-throated Flycatcher. Next quest: 4 warbler species observed in Ogunquit, Maine! Have a great year birding, guys!!

    Last year for me was a total dud, 37 species plus a nail in my tire. This year I managed to get 57 species, birding sunrise to sunset, a darn good number for upstate New York. It's a very mild winter here so we had some surprise overwintering birds - field sparrow, swamp sparrow and ruby-crowned kinglet.

    So this is one of the major differences between birdwatching in Australia and in USA, we don't do heard only. At least this is certainly the case for lifers, but may be variable for year lists.
    Anyway I managed to see 52 species in the first day. It would have been higher if I started somewhere better, however where I started is better for some interesting specialty species.

    • @BadgerlandBirding
      @BadgerlandBirding  9 месяцев назад

      For year birds and such we count heard only. For lifers, most people I know would definitely prefer to see it over only hearing it, and some people I know don’t count heard only birds on their life list.

    • @morganpickering651
      @morganpickering651 9 месяцев назад

      @@BadgerlandBirding I agree it depends on the person.
      I have even heard of someone, who to be far was quite old and not so mobile, sat in the car whilst there wife went out. When she came back he asked what she saw and ticked it himself. It is each to their own. This is also the reason why comparing lists to another can be unfair.
      I know my Mum only ticks a bird if she had a good view. For example on a tour she had seen a Channel-Billed Cuckoo, but it was a short flyby identified only by the guide. She felt it was inadequate to tick it on her life list. However in the same circumstance I may have ticked it.
