You should! I had the same thought recently and a friend told me I should go for it! A week later I booked a ticket with my brother and our friend and we road tripped up the east coast searching for and photographing wildlife. It is one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had! It wasn't easy to schedule and financially it was a stretch but we made it work. So often we talk ourselves out of doing things but if you can find that small gap in your life where you can squeeze in an adventure, you should do it. If you have any questions or want recommendations, please let me know! Here is a dorky video my brother recorded while we were heading to the atherton tablelands in N. Queensland to look for Tree Kangaroos, Platypus, and a wide variety of bird species. I'm sitting in the back with the binocs strapped in case I need to ID a bird on the road lol. Get outside, have fun, and be goofy. You'll enjoy it. ruclips.net/video/FeNoZlGlXeI/видео.htmlsi=P27pupSTNEeUUHbH
Love to return to Aus, visited a few years ago for a bat conference in Sydney and fell in love with the country but wasn’t too interested in bird photography, now with Duade and Jan’s films I’m getting very tempted again
The fact you show your crops and edits over the raw full image is amazing. Shows at what extend some have to be cropped in but still yield great image quality.
Love all the crakes. Absolutely stunning in my opinion:) My wife says I’m addicted to your videos… think she might be right 😊 Thank you for continuing to produce these informative and entertaining videos.
Wow! I'd call that a Full Hand of Crakes in just one sitting (laying)! Spotted & Plain, Baillon's, Buff-banded plus the Turbo-chook! Also: they are beautiful birds, albeit not parrot/robin-colourful... A lovely moring out and about, thanks for letting us tag along, digitally. 🙂 Also also: this video made me even happier with my 100-500, never mind the usually not-too-smooth background!
Thanks Pia, yes, I think they are beautiful too but I know many people overlook them. This was by far the most success I have ever had with Crakes as they are usually much harder to find and see. Yes, the 500 is not a light lens to cart around. Cheers, Duade
it seems to be well worth carrying that nice lens around. what amazing photos of the crakes. and so many in the same spot! glad you could enjoy it. thanks for sharing these moments.
What a great session in the wetlands there Duade! I loved seeing all those different crakes. I had no idea there was as much variety as there is. And those beautiful parrots. . . .I've never seen one. I want to now!!!!!
Wow, what a session! Really like your discussion of strategies. I'm a bit old in the tooth. So instead of lying down, I sit down, and put the gear between my legs using the tilt screen or an external monitor. Wet arse photography. The birds do calm down.
I have just found your channel and I have been binge watching all your videos! As a fairly newbie to photography - so far I've mainly done macro stuff but have just purchased the Olympus 100-400, I am so inspired to get out there and take photos! Also so excited to realised you shot this video about half an hour from where I live! Your joy is infectious, thank you!! (Using my son's account - I am not a gunzel ;-) )
That lens is so wonderful and it can be had on the used market for around $1450 USD which is far easier on the wallet then the $6000 of a new one. Thanks for bringing us along!
Fantastic, thank you. I love your videos. What an incredible experience, thanks for sharing. Love your videos. They are informative, the thought process, and you never try to sell stuff.
I loved the video, Duade. In a few moments, I will be going out with my R5 and EF 600 f4, looking for Red Foxes in their Winter coats. Like you, I love the IQ of the big primes. I’ve had good luck carrying a monopod to help me with the weight of the rig. For me, it’s a good compromise. Not as steady as a tripod,, but easier to carry and walk about. It makes it so much easier to hold the camera when a cooperative subject gives me a few poses over a few minutes.
Thanks for the feedback, it can be difficult to get colours right as the RAW file is influenced quite a bit by the white balance and can be flat at times, but the joy of photography is we have the flexibility to edit the photos to our preference. Cheers, Duade
Duade a 3.30am start to get to Kinnaids for such an early sunrise is very impressive! I will always enjoy your sunrise landscapes and this time with gorgeous backlit Kangaroos. Wonderful to meet some of your endemic rail birds and the big lens really does smash that background for sure. The filtered early light, low perspective and the big lens were a winning combo with the Crakes for sure. Great to meet your bright green Superb Parrot and a bird I see or hear almost daily at my home bordering a river reserve (Eastern Rosella). Hard to believe the big lens had gathered dust for most of this year Duade but so many other lenses you have trialled. A beautiful time of year and a pleasure to watch. Thanks mate.
Thanks Mike, yes, a wonderful morning out with the big white, I just have been so busy I have not had a chance, but I immediately know why I like it after looking at the images. Cheers, Duade
Awesome mate. You got the trifecta of crakes and the banded rail as well. The poor old spotless crake seldom looks his or her best in direct light. Overcast or muted light brings the blue out and contrasts better with their red eye. I have never seen so many crakes in one spot before, it was crake heaven lol Awesome vid, thanks for sharing.
I think the little Crakes are cool! You have such a wide variety of birds ... I'm sure we have some birds you would go crazy for here in the North East United States but the grass is always greener! 😁
Thanks, yes, we tend to get used to our local birds, I have never seen a Woodpecker or a Hummingbird so those would be high on my list should I ever visit your part of the world. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade we have three different kinds of woodpeckers just in my back yard at the feeders and hummingbirds in the back yard all summer! Oh and I was cutting the lawn the other day and a bald eagle flew right over my house! They nest in the marshes right up the street! So I see what you mean! 🙂
I love these types of videos from you mate feels like I was along for the ride. Gees so many Crakes in one spot if that was the UK there'd be a stampede of birders going to see them. Keep these types of vids coming. Love em.
So many nice images from one morning!!! I know the feeling of wet pants when you get up from the mud after a session like that from photographing waders in the wadden sea in Germany. Absolutely worth it though for those images. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your content and recommended your videos to my mom ^^
Great video Duade. 🙏 I stumbled onto Kinnairds wetland in October this year on a trip to Shepparton. It's a terrific place. Most of where you were shooting from was under water when I was there, some of the tracks were fully flooded. Awesome to see so many crakes! Needless to say I didn't see any LOL. Cussen Park in Tatura is also great for crakes if you get that far west, I saw two Spotless and one Baillon's there. 👍
Greetings from Ontario, Canada. Throroughly enjoying your videos. My brother is in Australia so I will be visiting there someday. Looking forward to partaking in some wildlife photography when I do. Thanks for all the tips.
You have found your niche. These videos and your commentary are informative and especially relaxing. I'm not so much into your description of your cameras and lenses, but your insistence to follow these wonderful birds in your home in Australia. I lived in your country for 2 years...chased a few big reds in the bush after a barbie with some blonc and my mate, and amazed a tree-fulls of galahs. I miss your country and your wonderful videos. RB - Woomera 1974-75...before your time, eh?
Yes! This is the type of content I love to see! Great stuff Duade, that crake and rail party must have been an amazing experience for you! Great photos and great dialogue, I hope we will see more of this type of video, the equipment reviews are great as well but a balance is always good.
I love seeing you out in the field! We had a similar Australian Spotted Crake moment at the Werribee Treatment Plant recently. They must be doing so well this year which is great to see!! So glad that you saw a Superb Parrot! Gorgeous bird. We haven't managed to get up to Numurkah to see them this year. Great video! (I wish we had the camera gear you have but we chose lightweight so we can walk around with out stuff without puffing out... doubt I'd be strong enough to hold one of those big lenses!!) ~ Karen (PS. we were up in Wangaratta a few weeks ago staying in the Warby Ranges & we saw you at the petrol station!! Such a hoot to see you in real life! We would have said hello but we were outside in our car & you just popped into the shop so we didn't quite meet... so here's a belated hello from us! 😀)
Thanks for commenting, so sorry we didnt get the chance to chat, feel free to email me at duade.paton@gmail.com next time you are up here and we can catch up for coffee at the Wetlands or elsewhere. Cheers, Duade
Wow, you really lucked out with the crakes and rail! Such great shots you got. Of the similar species where I live in Massachusetts, you're lucky to see one bird, let alone a whole flock! The parrots were great, too! I have the EF 600mk2 and R5, and that thing is an even bigger beast than yours. I need a monopod to use it for more than a few minutes. I had maybe 20 minutes in the rain with a sora at a local community garden recently and was pretty stoked to get some awesome shots.
Hi Duade - really enjoy your photography. What I like most is the way you show the raw image then superimpose the processed image on top, so we can see exactly how much processing goes into the shot. Always something I’m never 100%sure about is the processing - never want to over-process and I can e a bit clumsy sometimes, but your presentation helps. Thank you 👍
As always, I enjoyed tagging along with you. I especially like the way you show the RAW image and then crop in and frame what the toned image looks like. While I'm someone who prefers light, long zoom lenses, I'm always impressed by the image quality of those big primes.
Good to see the R5 and the 500mm out again. IQ is just amazing. Fantastic video. Love the Superb Parrott, thats beautiful. We have a lot of wild parakeets around areas of SE England, supposedly kept birds that got released into the wild or got loose. Amazing wildlife in your beautiful country. 👍
Thanks mate, yes, the variety in Parrots here is crazy. I don't think we have any introduced parrots here but many of ours have moved overseas unfortunately. Cheers, Duade
Photographing birds in Australia seems so easy... It's just that birds, which are hard to see in Europe, even as a professional ornithologist, come right up to your lens and don't care about your presence. Incredible. Great photos!
Yeah it's like easy mode, just turn up at a park, no-one else there, no dog walkers or people coming up and disturbing things to ask you how far your lens can see, just go where you want not restricted to paths or hides with bad light. Lie down and 4 different crake species just wander along in the sun. Just hearing a crake in the UK is like a lifetime achievement.
Thanks, I am lucky to live in regional Australia so we do not have the population of bigger cities so I don't often have an issue with other humans. Certain birds are accommodating as in this video however many are not. It really depends on the species and location but given we have so many birds it is not too hard to find a species that will let you photograph it. Cheers, Duade
Great pictures, Duade.. love Parrots 🦜 and your videos are so entertaining and enjoyable.. and a lot can be learned just by watching you taking pictures 😊
Everytime I visit my favourite spots where I take wildlife pictures, I think of all the gold nuggets I've learnt from you, Duade.. yes, just by watching how you take pictures, I've been able to take very nice wildlife photos using my Canon R5 and 100-500 mm lens. Thanks for your help in improving my pictures. 👍😁
You can't have your crake and eat it too! See what I did there? Great Video again Duade. You've whet my appetite to get out there again...but it's not today. It's raining today. I will get out amongst it soon though. All the best.
one of your best videos to date. What a difference a real lens makes compared to all these zooms that people love. clearly shows why you pay the money for a big white L lens.
Thanks, Duade, for another very enjoyable video. I really enjoy these types of videos of you getting out there and just enjoying yourself out in nature. You definitely took plenty of cracking Crake shots. It might be time to sell the heavy 500mm for a much lighter RF 600mm 😂. Thanks Michael
It is my pleasure, yes, I would love the new 600 but I think its just over 20k AUD which makes it a very big investment. I am saving for the R5II at this stage which wil likely be 8k AUD so not cheap. Cheers, Duade
Wonderful video mate. for sure a beautiful bird that Parrot, but i think the Crakes are very beautiful too. And the photos you got off them was just stunning. Wishing you a great week, and looking forward to your next video. Cheers, Bjoern.
You take superb pics no matter wherever you go, I'm visiting Winton Wetlands in about 2 shortly I manage to take one pic half as good as yours I'm going to be extremely happy, great vid , I think I would be using that 500mm as much as possible but I do appreciate the appeal of zooms which is all I use
Those Crakes are just beautiful birds, as well as the Superb Parrot. Wow. I've just put this place on my list for whenever I get to wander around Victoria. Wonderful to see your excitement finding these birds. Lovely video, thank you Duade.
I loved the light on the superb parrot’s head. For me it makes a better, more interesting photo. You’re a great photographer, thanks for sharing. Suses 💜💜💜
Thanks Duade, another great video and some fantastic images from your trusty EF 500 F4. Just think what you'd be able to do with the RF 600 F4 L ! Mind you, I've no idea how you'd manage to explain that investment to your wife :) . What a stunning bird the Superb Parrot is, although even though they are pretty common the Eastern Rosella is definitely a bit of a looker as well. Thanks again. John
Thanks John, yes, I love that lens. I would love the 600 but it is so expensive. Yes, the Eastern if not so common would be the top of the list for many. Cheers, Duade
Another great video Duade. I really like these field ones much more so than gear reviews (which of course have their place and are very good as well). What I'd love is a few more post processing vids. I got so much from your ones explaining LR and PS technique, which I've watched multiple times. And perhaps nothing much has changed in your workflow. Anyway, food for thought, keep up the great work
Hi Duade, great video as always. I just got the R7 and the 100-400, and I’m really looking forward to getting out and using it once I set it all up. Thanks for the inspiration it’s been really helpful.
Duade, thank you for sharing this beautiful experience. The crakes were really interesting! The super parrot was beautiful and that Eastern Rosella was so colorful, especially with the warm background. Thank you for showing the reality of what bird photography and wildlife photography entails.
I would love to see behind the scene, you set up your camera and walk a bit to show you "wandering" then have to turn around and tear down your set up 😂, brilliant video as usual
Another great video, fantastic do be out with you in beautiful Australia (particularly when stuck in a boring office!), such a wealth of wildlife, so beautiful birds, the Superb Parrot is indeed well named - another one added to my list when I return to Australia. Can't wait for the next session out already ! Thank you Duade !
The more you share the more I want to just fly out there and travel the entirety of Australia.

aww loved the little crakes , they were new to me, ive never seen anything like them before. Always beautiful photos great video enjoyed.

I've never really paid attention to water birds before. They are really quite pretty. Love your video as usual.
Thanks Paul, there are loads of them when you go looking, have fun, Cheers, Duade
Your genuine joy at crawling around in mud & lugging that heavy lens around to get the best shots is what its all about, well done.
Love the pictures Duade!⭐
Wow, what a session! Really like your discussion of strategies. I'm a bit old in the tooth. So instead of lying down, I sit down, and put the gear between my legs using the tilt screen or an external monitor. Wet arse photography. The birds do calm down.

wow! Longing for spring here...

Yes!
Trust me, it's not always this easy! especially the closer you live to a city
Thanks mate, glad it was enjoyable and helpful, Cheers, Duade
Everytime I visit my favourite spots where I take wildlife pictures, I think of all the gold nuggets I've learnt from you, Duade.. yes, just by watching how you take pictures, I've been able to take very nice wildlife photos using my Canon R5 and 100-500 mm lens. Thanks for your help in improving my pictures. 👍😁
It is my pleasure, Cheers, Duade@@Richardisonline
You can't have your crake and eat it too! See what I did there? Great Video again Duade. You've whet my appetite to get out there again...but it's not today. It's raining today. I will get out amongst it soon though. All the best.
Nice one Brain, great to hear you are keen to get out, wet here also with strong winds. Cheers, Duade
As always, a professional and highly educational view; thanks, Duade.
one of your best videos to date.
@Duade I'm in the same boat, mate. Expensive hobby we have.
Great video Duade.
Always a delight, seeing your great videos... Thank you Duade
Wonderful video mate. for sure a beautiful bird that Parrot, but i think the Crakes are very beautiful too. And the photos you got off them was just stunning. Wishing you a great week, and looking forward to your next video.
Cheers, Bjoern.
Many thanks!
Thanks Harry, yes, I love the lens but it gets very busy with zooms and testing lenses I often don't have time. Yes, getting closer now. Cheers, Duade
Your works were extraordinarily helpful and interesting to see ❤
Thanks you, its my pleasure, Cheers, Duade
Those Crakes are just beautiful birds, as well as the Superb Parrot. Wow. I've just put this place on my list for whenever I get to wander around Victoria. Wonderful to see your excitement finding these birds. Lovely video, thank you Duade.
I loved the light on the superb parrot’s head. For me it makes a better, more interesting photo. You’re a great photographer, thanks for sharing. Suses 💜💜💜
Many thanks!
You live in a beautiful area!
Great video Duade! Thanks for sharing your experience. Felt like I was there too! (I wish, it's cold here, lol!)
Thanks, yes, warming up down here coming into Summer, stay warm up there.
Anyway, food for thought, keep up the great work
Thanks for the feedback and yes, I probably do need to look at a processing video at some stage. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade, great video as always. I just got the R7 and the 100-400, and I’m really looking forward to getting out and using it once I set it all up. Thanks for the inspiration it’s been really helpful.
My pleasure, have fun with the new kit, Cheers, Duade
Duade, thank you for sharing this beautiful experience. The crakes were really interesting! The super parrot was beautiful and that Eastern Rosella was so colorful, especially with the warm background. Thank you for showing the reality of what bird photography and wildlife photography entails.
My pleasure!
Nice pictures as usual, I am so envy.
Picture looks tack. sharp and the background is nice and creamy. Great lens.
Just love watching your field trips Duade, thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us. Thanks mate
Glad you enjoyed it
I would love to see behind the scene, you set up your camera and walk a bit to show you "wandering" then have to turn around and tear down your set up 😂, brilliant video as usual
Yes, there is a lot of that :-) Cheers, Duade
Another great video, fantastic do be out with you in beautiful Australia (particularly when stuck in a boring office!), such a wealth of wildlife, so beautiful birds, the Superb Parrot is indeed well named - another one added to my list when I return to Australia. Can't wait for the next session out already ! Thank you Duade !
Glad you enjoyed it!
