BMCC6K + SIRUI 35mm Saturn 1.6x Anamorphic Full Frame (lens test)

- In this video I test out the SIRUI 35mm Saturn L-Mount. SIRUI sent me this lens, but they didn't sponsor the video. I also have a behind the scenes video coming up on the channel very soon.
I didn't expect much from this lens, but I really enjoy using it and the price is very reasonable when you think that we're still talking about a full frame anamorphic lens. I really like the warm and vintage look and the fact that flares are extremely controlled. Unfortunately there is a bit of distortion, which is very visible when filming inside. Everything was shot in 6K 3:2 (1.6x desqueeze in camera). Codec used was BRAW 12:1. Mix of 36 and 24p. I also used Hoya diopters filters +1 and +2 to get some close up shots (the minimum focus of 0.9m makes it hard to get close to the subject), together with my NiSi IRND 3 and 6 stops and a 1/4 Tiffen Black Pro Mist. Edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve with BUTTERY LUTs. All my opinions will be included in the behind the scenes video! Enjoy!

Holy pincushion distortion batman! This looks like it was shot through a funhouse mirror.
The warm flares are actually really nice, definitely prefer them to strong blue ones. Looks great!
Considering the shortcomings of the lens, this is a really beautiful piece Matteo.
You got some great footage out of these, like always! The 1.6 squeeze ratio definitely makes this a more interesting option than most of the budget anamorphics that I've seen. And I agree with you on the flares. Those look surprisingly nice.
So much character. Absolutely beautiful!
I'd really appreciate it if next time you upload anamorphic footage, you don't add black bars, so that people with ultrawide monitors can enjoy the full screen experience, plus it wouldn't affect people with 16x9 monitors since RUclips would fill out their screen with black bars. Great shots nonetheless!!
Pretty sure he didn't add black bars. That's just the dimensions of the image once you desqueeze
@@GRANDDOSE that why you shouldn't export it in 16x9 because the program will add black bars by default. However, if he exported it in whatever the de squeezed footage aspect ratio is, it wouldn't have black bars.
@@Lwxid correct. He seems to have added them because the black bars are still showing in RUclips's "default" view.
I get what you mean but your wording is a bit strange. RUclips doesn’t fill out th screen. If a video is a certain dimension less than the aspect ratio of the screen it is viewed on it will display inside of that aspect ratio. The rest of the space is just black by default. Think of it like “empty space” with no pixels.
@@chevonpetgrave4991 Exactly. That's a better way to say it
Very nice! I use this lens/camera combo alot, along with the 50mm and 75mm saturns. When pincushin is corrected, these lenses are amazing! I do use a 1/8 bloom filter with mine. But yeah, the open gate with 1.6x sqeeze option, its like this lens was made for this camera.
I know u love youre leica lenses but this is really refreshing seeing u shoot on this sirui anamorphic. I love the combo with the 6Kff such anmazing cinematic images!
Leica are on a different planet, but again for 1k dollars this is not bad, except the weird distortion
Didnt see distortion yet im gonna wat h again.
What i do see in sirui lenses is a little too much color saturation for some reason
Beautiful stuff! We just shot on these this weekend and i’m so happy with them!!
Gorgeous images as always, Matteo. That open gate anamorphic image is amazing. Interesting to see the pincushion distortion, but I'm sure it could easily be corrected in Resolve if desired. Beautiful subtle flares and great bokeh. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful image ❤ I would love to see how you graded this.
I like these tests you post because it helps me with my cinemtography and framing... Grazie a mille i obrigado
Great video again, Matteo! Beautiful images!
I've got a blue flare version and it's been amazing to shoot with. But you should try the Sirui 150mm 1.6x. It is an absolute game changer paired with the enormous open gate. The minimum focus is so close that I'm using as a macro in some situations. I own a greatjoy 85mm 1.8x and it also looks unbelievable. What a great time to do what we do!?!
Nice. What are you doing in the dark bars to manage your look without noise?
I'm using the same camera on a doc right now and have had some great results and some terrible even with fast lenses. I'm sure i'm doing something wrong in my ISO choice but when I think I found a solution I end up in a location with equally dark but wildly different lighting. Any tips for shooting those dark bar scenes would be great!
Good job Matteo. The 1:49 second take is sick. 😵💫
I did notice the pin cushion effect on the interior shots. But, I think that can be compensated in post. Overall, the imagery was fantastic. Great work as always.
Watching a master work the camera 📸
Beautiful shots and grading as always, great choice of music ❤ the heavy lens distortion is really distracting in my opinion.
Have you had a chance to use the other focal lengths in the set? Curious if they have similar levels of pin cushion distortion or if it’s just cause it’s a wider focal length.
Nice video! Distortion is a bit much in some shots. I assume this would look better on a smaller sensor?
Love the track you used on this one Matteo!!
Looks like it's got an inverted barrel distortion, as the image is barrel distorted inwards. Besides that, footage looks great
Fantastic footage as always! What’s the name of the song you used in the video? It’s a lovely piece!
Beautiful frames! Gonna pick up one myself, but was surprised to see how much pin distortion there is with this lens, perhaps it can be corrected slightly in DR?🤔
L-mount !!! S5ii here we come !!!
Is there a lot of warping or mainly just with buildings?
Nice! Thanks for sharing
Excellent work as always.😁
thank you for the video. now i know i should find another option for an anamorphic lens because of the distortion.🙏
very nice look you´ve created here!
reminds me of an "interesting" debate I had with someone about using "black mist" VS external adjustments in DR. Im of the opinion that a mist filter affects the light on the way in, in such a way that an "adjustment" cant duplicate. curious as to your thoughts. and im inching closer to getting this cam. I love my 6kpro but the larger buckets on this model for low light is super impressive. thanks as always for the updates. keeping it buttery
Love your videos, but this one the highlights and shadows seem to bright and to dark (as compared to your over videos). Does the lens produced a very contrast image?
This was exported in rec709a so you should see the colors as they really are. Many other videos I have online were kind of washed out. Also the weather was terrible with sahara dust and the sky was completely white. I like contrast tho :)
@@matteobertolilol - Literally just watched your video about this 😅
Amazing as always!!! Beautiful takes and grading!
Madrid city right??
Thanks! Yes Madrid!
Hi Mateo: Thank you for your new test.
I do not like make bad reviews but for me the lens have too much distortion, and if you dont have used a softening filter for me the image is too soft.
I wnow that seem shabby, but I think if you poff a HELIOS 44-2 KMZ 8 blades (black glosy versión) anamorfaked with an oval black paper or plastic on the iris without the transparent fishing line, may be you will like more the anamorphic look that your sirui provides.
I follow you and I think your effort in making RUclips videos is phenomenal. I bought my set of Leica lenses and you are to blame and I am happy about it.
I congratulate you on the video, which is beautiful, but I think the lens is not up to par.
Check description, I did used a pro mist. Yes crazy distortion and I am also a way bigger fan of spheric lenses to be honest. Leica for the win :)
Thanks for this!
Ive never been so impressed
Nice video. At 0:51 seconds on, the warping caused by the gyro stabilization on the building is really noticeable
Yes sometimes gyro doesn’t work well.
You desqueezed in camera? I didn't know the new BMCC FF 6K had that capability for 1.6X.
Yes if you select 3:2 open gate it will automatically de squeeze 1.6x
Fantastic cinematography as usual. The lens itself reminds Sigma's rendering, sharp modern look, definitely on a clear side. A bit of a miss something after your Leicas works.
Leica R were made by the same guy that made the Panavision Primos. They are pretty much the same lenses and I think they are still underrated ahah
Are you in Madrid still?? I'm from here and it would be nice to meet and hang out!!
distortion looks a bit odd. isn't it supposed to distort kinda outside and not inside the frame if that makes sense?
It’s pretty visible when filming inside. Not too bad outside. Depends on the lens, but at this price point is very hard to complain ahah
The Sirui lenses have pincushion distortion, which looks absolutely horrible. But most budget anamorphic lenses have this. Except for the new Blazar Remus 1.5x anamorphics..they have barrel distortion and look far more like vintage anamorphics in this regard. I think that is what you mean, isn`t it?
@@florianschmid4109 yes, thats exactly it! i just thought all anamorphic lenses suppose to have barrel distortion, which i really like the look of. first time seeing this kind of distortion on anamorphic lens and not sure it feels right
did you use warp stabilizer or is that the readout of the BMCC6k?
Gyro data from the sensor, but didn’t work good in some shots. I think I didn’t input the right focal length in the camera settings in a couple of shots
@@matteobertoli That's the only thing that made me second guess the combo. Thank you Matteo. Otherwise, I think this could be an incredible tool for storytelling.
This combo is nice. May I ask the shooting settings?
BRAW 12:1. 6K open gate
Nicely filmed as always Matteo but I think the Sirui is a little clinical and lacking in character - the footage Flo captured (@oftwolands) on the Great Joy 50mm 1.8x has a wonderful character. With the Sirui it could almost be a regular lens cropped to look like anamorphic (apart from the edge distortions). Love to hear what your thoughts are!?
It’s a modern 1K dollars ff anamorphic lens. I think for what it costs it looks pretty good, except for the distortion. Not sure I got your point. You said it has no character and then said it has a wonderful character. Is it the same lens?
Oh man, I'm such a doofus - I meant the footage Flo filmed on the Great Joy 50mm 1.8x (ruclips.net/video/lbL8ARwMhMQ/видео.html) Same price lens, much more 'anamorphic' looking. I've now edited my original comment!!
Regardless of price point what do you prefer, the Full Fame or Ursa 12k?
That 12K sensor has something special
@@matteobertoli Thank you
What timeline are you editing off to get slower motion in 36fps?
24p
Phenomenal!
Not much anamorphic character not impressive perspective (the key point to wider anamorphic to me). Very clean with pincushion, could be a spherical lens with crop and a bit of distortion in post don't you think ?
This is beautiful 👌🏾🇬🇧🌩⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ #blackmagicgang
Which CFast card you recommend for Bmpcc 6k?
Novachips are great and cheaper. They sent me one recently which I used for this video and it’s been working great
Nice 👏👏👏
Pin cushion distortion is huge
Take it with a grain of salt its not the Lens but the Operator...
nice, but the distortion is nasty
Yeah sometimes is a bit too much :)
Fuck, I miss Lisbon
😂 that’s Madrid
@@matteobertoli😂😂😂
you are a master but this is too much distortion for anything serious I think
Yeah distortion is wild, but it’s 1K dollars for a full frame anamorphic lens. I think it’s ok for some weird artistic look.
Would love to see what you can do with the blazars
Oooohhhhh Madrid Madrid Madrid...
