    Draper knew.
    You can tell, because the first thing he does when the ball is dead is look at the umpire. Draper doesn't immediately celebrate his win as you would if you hit a clean shot. Nope. He immediately looks to the umpire instead, to see which way he calls the point. Draper KNEW there was an issue with his hit.
    And as soon as the umpire mentions 'ruling'--but BEFORE he clarifies the ruling is about a 'fair shot', Draper looks behind himself to where he hit the shot. Again, it's because he knew there was an issue. How could he not know, he's a pro tennis player who's hit a million shots & knows how a shank into the ground feels & reacts. I mean, FAA back at his own baseline was able to make the correct call, lol.
    For many tennis fans, Draper will go down in our esteem despite having won. And FAA will go up in our esteem despite having lost. Because tennis is about more than shots, it's also about sportsmanship & how you conduct yourself.

    With so much advancement in the technology, it's ridiculous to have these debates. It's so easy to have the challenge system in situations like this. Even if the umpire is sure, if the player feels otherwise, it would have taken less time to just have a replay and decide.
    In cricket, we do have DRS to resolve this.
    Seeing instances like this time and again now and this affects players mentally more than just a win or a loss.

      Now that you bring up cricket, do you know the review system was first started in cricket (LBW) and then spread to other sports like tennis? It's very interesting as a cricket and tennis fan to know this fact

But it is painfully, painfully, painfully obvious when the ball shanks up at such a trajectory. There is no other way to get that to happen without severely opening the face of the racket or hitting the top of the frame. I took a video that was shown on ESPN and it plays it in ultra slow motion. The ball hits the bottom of the racket and is deflected towards the floor, it bounces and comes back up and bounces back off the racket and goes over the other court. The strangest thing is that the video never plays in another slow motion on ESPN, and they have that technology. Why they didn't show the video in slow motion?. We already know why! ESPN cannot question a referee's decision (ATP)

      @Tom-sx6nn 5 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, I think this is exactly what happened. If you take the video of the highlights, set the playback to 0.25, and play/pause manually frame by frame, you can see the ball hits the racket, which deflects the ball down, the racket gets pushed back by the impact, and then as the ball bounces back up of the ground, Draper makes contact with ball lifting it up and over the net

    He then even underpins himself being insecure when he asked the referee to decide whether to replay the point or not.

    At time 1:10 and watching in extra slow motion setting, it appears the ball hit the court first then the tip of Draper's racket hit the ball immediately afterward as ball was rising up, causing the ball to have a weak upward and short trajectory. There appears to be no ball hit first then hitting the court and bouncing up. So the call was correct and Draper won the point fairly. I agree they should have looked at a clear slow motion replay for this point. It should be allowed as a challenge to a call.

    Question:
    If the umpire didn't see anything janky about Draper's shot, why does he IMMEDIATELY announce, once the ball's gone dead, "I'm ruling that was a fair shot" (0:10). Why would he need to say that if he didn't notice something possibly problematic.
    Was the umpire clarifying that the bounce off the net was in fact legal? Everyone watching already knew that, it didn't need to be clarified. It's just weird that he'd announce a ruling..."everything was fine with that point" when in fact if everything was fine he shouldn't have needed to rule on anything.
    Draper too: he IMMEDIATELY turns to the umpire, before FAA has even said anything, & says "I would replay if there's a replay".
    Why are all 3 immediately responding/reacting like they know there's an issue...but then 20 seconds later 2 of them are gaslighting FAA that there's no issue. BOTH of them go with "I didn't see it", lol. Meanwhile FAA saw it from his own baseline.
