    PSA: If you prefer the sound of one of these over the others, it's almost certainly the IRs you prefer. Don't buy IR loaders on sound. Buy for the features that you need, and then get some Ownhammer IRs and sound spectacular regardless.

    I went with the Cab M+, and love it. Once you save the presets, you don’t have to use the interface anymore. Just the knobs on the pedal. I use mine with my pedalboard straight into my speaker and DI, no amp needed. It’s awesome.

    For versatility, the CAB M+ is hard to beat. The sounds are great, as this shootout shows (obviously there's inherent subjectivity from listener to listener in these kinds of shootouts). But it also works surprisingly well for acoustic guitars, using the IR loader with acoustic guitar impulse responses. There's very little on the Web and YT about this, but the acoustic IRs (even free demo ones) make a direct line out from an under saddle piezo PU sound very close to a mic'd sound. And with the built-in reverbs, and powerful EQ (it also has a parametric EQ option they didn't show) as well as a compressor (the Body control on the enhancer), plus a built in noise gate and tuner, it really can serve as an all-in-one solution for playing live or recording. It also has a bass option, which works great for bass players, including lots of great bass cab IRs that come with it (in addition to accepting third-party IRs, or your own). And, as The Captain said, it can be used multiple ways for playing live or recording -- as a clean pedal platform to go direct to an FRFR monitor, FOH and/or DAW without an amp, our used in line with the power section of your amp, and then out to FOH and/or DAW, using your amp (and hearing it) as you would normally, but without having to mic it. The mobile app software is really easy to use and intuitive for on the fly changes if you need, or to change preset selections, including presets that you create yourself (it's capable of holding dozens of presets). I' ve had one for about 5 months, and it's worked great. I got it as an open box item for $219, which was a steal in my book.

    I’ve had the strymon, two notes, hx stomp, and original amplifire. Two notes had the best clean base tone to my ears and the one I ended up keeping. It also covers Bass Amp territory very well and takes pedals really well, as most digital amps don’t. Amplifire had amazing amps, but didn’t take pedals well, a lot of clipping and just didn’t react like an amp with drives in front. Not sure if that’s changed with the newer versions... They are all great though. They’ll all get you through the gig. Didn’t love the helix stomp, but also didn’t spend too much time tweaking. Power supply on the hx stomp was a deal breaker for me. Strymon and Two notes both ran fine off my voodoo labs.

    Amplifire ! What a realistic soiund. Clean , dirt, pedals in front. It sounds perfect in this video. I use a pedalboard ....into an ols tech 21 blonde (drives in front) mod and verb after it. Great when i put it through studio speakers. But the problem with ( i guess ) al these boxes / modelors is...when youn put them straight into the p.a. (live) or in a monitor wedge (flat response) and turn it up to gig volumes...all the magic tubey tones I hear from the studio monitors or headphones disapear and it souns like plastic. Not an real amp experience . But in studiomonitors it all sounds great. What is the reason for this? Great video captain and Pete. Great playing as always. I hope you will make more video's on these amp in a box things. But ten focussed on live permormance. For players that want to replace there tube amps for an amp in a box pedal and here himself through a punch stage monitor. Thanks man

    I completely endorse this idea. My own rig is pedalboard-mounted, and plugs directly into front of house. The ability to travel from gig to gig with only a guitar and a pedalboard in the back seat of your car, that is the only way to travel.
    The preamp pedal I use is the Effectrode Blackbird. Since a Blackbird cannot be gotten anymore, I will make a note in my phone so I can recommend this video for next time someone asks me about how to build a pedalboard-mounted rig.

    • @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
      @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 4 года назад

      COVID happened. Parts are a bit more difficult to get, shipping companies are questionable at best, and garage-based builders are lucky to still be in business, let alone being able to build any significant number of units.
      I bought my Blackbird a couple years ago. They were $300 at the time. Just after the COVID lockdown, I saw it go over $500. Right now, they are back to about $450. Right now, everything is fluctuating wildly, so buying from garage-based builders is simply not a viable option. If the economy can get back to stability, maybe garage-based builders will too. If that happens, I will absolutely recommend Effectrode again.

    • @Azederac
      @Azederac 4 года назад

      @@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy I would't describe Effectrode as a garage-based bulider though!
      Their peculiarity is the use of NOS vintage tubes in their pedals, so maybe it's really the scarcity of high quality tubes that meet the required standards that make difficult for Effectrode to maintain the production of some pedals, or force them to slightly revise the design so that more units can be produced with different tubes.
      I was lucky enough to snatch a Mercury Fuzz with a NOS Sylvania 6112, which is currently Out of Stock, for the mentioned reasons.

    • @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
      @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 4 года назад

      @@Azederac The tubes are a huge reason in why I went with Effectrode. Fender MGT and Victory Kraken are using tubes I never even heard of, which makes me wonder how to replace them when they die. Effectrode uses 12a type tubes, which are easy to get. I have 12ax7 tubes in mine, but any 12a type will work.

    The only one of the bunch without annoying computer twiddling is the Simplifier so the choice is pretty easy. Just a shame the amp models aren't anything I'm all that interested in. Maybe with some twiddling that doesn't require computing, one can get a jazz chorus type sound? But then again, throw in a little extra and you can buy a genuine jazz chorus, that also comes with an fx loop, rec out and headphone jack.

    I really wish the simplifier was simple enough to bypass the preamp and just use the power amp stage (if I could turn off the CabSims on occasion just to use my own CabSim that would be even better)
    The instruction pamphlet doesn’t address this and so far the company hasn’t got back to say whether it’s even possible or not…
    Any SIMPLIFIER users out there that want to do a RUclips video on how to actually work this thing would be very welcome!😅

    Two notes for clean sound & Strymon Iridium for overdrive sound ..but overall the Strymon Iridium is more pleasant to the ears..it just needs a little bit more of low end warmth.

    I just asked for a video like this next week on a comment. This is good service haha. Thanks for the comparison! Been really attracted to the Simplifier since you reviewed it, but wanted to see the other options. I think the Two Notes sounded great, but the I/Os of the Simplifier are still very attractive.
    The Strymon Iridum sounded a bit too boxy IMO and for that money I don't think it's worth it. Also something very important to me tha maybe was not mentioned for all of them was the Aux in to play along with songs.
    This is like church to me. Keep it up guys! Cheers.

    Good Video thanks! For me, the Torpedo CAB M+ is lonely at the top. He is very flexible in all areas, live, studio, home recording. You just have to be able to use it properly! I use 2 rare Dumble IR`s 500s that I mix together! I've never had such a good sound! I don't want to use amps live anymore, I put the guitar in my pedal board & after the CAB M+ straight into the desk, that's it!

    Seems a little like they breezed over the Iridium because it's $100 bucks more and didn't really even mention or adjust it's very realistic tones and Mic/Room knob and sounds even more real when using the Stereo Outs to capture the room's space even better. The Ampli-Firebox sounds pretty good might look into that for a dual amp situation.

    Competent gain staging and a good DI with a 4 X 12 sim. That's all you need. What's an amp?

  • @thecaveofthedead
    @thecaveofthedead 4 года назад

    Guys. You _can_ run the amp through the Firebox into the speaker cab like the two notes. Again, it's not a load box, but you can run the amp through it and then have the cab going and a direct out with an IR. People kinda need to know that.

    • @davemarshall9153
      @davemarshall9153 4 года назад +1

      I was just looking at the owner's manual, I don't believe you can run the speaker OUT of an amp into the firebox. At least I don't see any speaker through jacks.

    • @thecaveofthedead
      @thecaveofthedead 4 года назад

      @@davemarshall9153 Damn. I must have got really confused somewhere along the line. Could have sworn you could run the amp through the box and use the XLR for line out.

    I think I would be correct in saying that the Simplifier is a pre-amp with extensive tone shaping as I don’t think you can do IRFs with analogue circuitry? The others are potentially doing more complex emulation because of the digital processing. I’ve an Iridium and am very happy with it.

  • @Steven1Cicero
    @Steven1Cicero 3 года назад +1

    Why is it that no one ever shows what these are actually plugged into that is really producing the sound, Are these going directly from the device through a speaker that is being mic'ed? Are they running through the computer with an amp emulator? Are they plugged directly into a sound card on a computer? Just how are you capturing the sound?

    Still the Simplifier for me. However....., the Line6 POD Go makes it more difficult for me. I've recorded in my fiend's home studio and I worked with the Helix and (mostly) the Kemper. The ease of having every combination of any amp and cabinet you could possibly imagine right in front of you was an amazing experience. And with the POD Go that's within my reach all of a sudden. That POD may win, even if I still prefer the sound and the feel of the Simplifier.

    It's a nice video and I understand you wanted to shoot out dedicated pedals, but I think most buyers are wondering how these stand up against the HX stomp because of how close they are in price (especially the iridium) and how much more you get with the stomp. If the stomp's pre-amp/power-amp/cab sim stands up against these pedals, a lot of people will throw it at the end of their board and use any extra effects if they need it.

    So how do these compare to an iRig with Ampitube? Amplitube allows you to have a wide range of amplifiers and cabinets plus a complete virtual pedalboard. So, (for example) you can turn up for a gig with a guitar, pedalboard and Iridium and plug into the desk. With the iRig/Amplitube you only need guitar and iRig with Amplitube on your smartphone. How about a side-by-side comparison?
