😂 i used pond liner for my roof , using cheap plastic pond liner and its been on the roof for 6 years held down by bricks , cost me £20 ... Great video.... ❤
Im working on a pond for my grandma's red eared slider (turtle) thats 6 foot by 9 foot and 3 feet deep with a shelf on the 6 foot side going an additional 18 inches back and 18 inches down for plants. Going to line it with 45 mil EPDM and was not aware i needed an underlayment. I have some 20 mil fiber reinforcement greenhouse plastic and was hoping it will work if I double it up.
I have what is known as Hard pan here in the USA. It holds water really well. Can I just dig my pond then just fill with water and skip a liner? I want to put Koi, turtles etc in it.
@@ThePondAdvisor we have had water in the area before. We want a bigger pond and are enlarging it now. I don't mind hazy water and will have a water feature that will move the water. But I was wondering if I had to have a liner. We didn't before and the water level statyed up
If you have soil that will retain water, you don't have to have a liner. If you're going to have koi, though, you probably won't see them often as they frequently stir up the bottom and your water will be silty.
You don’t need a liner per say if your have dug a test hole and left it for 18 months. You can cover the base with fabric and create an ecosystem pond with rocks and gravel, intake bay and wetland filter to reduce the silt. Coloured carp are easy to see when on the surface in most lakes.
@@ThePondAdvisor raised pond three different levels with waterfall it was far easier to shape the pond how I wanted it with cement and never have to worry about leaks and it looks really natural. I built the walls with stones and built a stone waterfall. I'm not saying liner is bad but for me personally it didn't work how I wanted it to. Cost me a lot for the liner but I'll use it elsewhere on other projects.
Do you live in cold area where it might freeze during the winter? I heard with concrete, the repeated freezing and dethawing can actually cause cracks in concrete
Hi im going to build a new pond appox 8m x 5m x 2m deep and i would like to concrete over The liner then build a wall on the concrete so i can then stone face the wall. So my question is can i concrete over epdm or pvc and which would be the best Thanks
Hi Mark, Some great content throughout your videos, thank you. It s been really interesting to watch and learn from your videos for the past 3 years, super friendly for newbie’s. My pond is 4 years old now, a 2x4m and is layered with a cheap PVC, now leaking after the spring cleaning, will be installing EPDM liner. Can I still layer it over the PVC liner or should I remove it prior ?
Dig a hole. Put liner in hole. Pour concrete. Put rock and bog zone where you like. Liner is protected by concrete and concrete doesn't need to be water tight or crack proof.
@@Gigi-xr3qscover the liner, skin or the pond, or water proof bag, I would use a 250 gram geo on top plus rocks and gravel. If you have high traffic from these animals use more protection concrete cloth or wire can be also used
@@ThePondAdvisor Thanks for the response. I am thinking I will use the liner, and then slowly coat it with concrete over the course of a few days. Thanks.
Hi, what is the best pond overlay and where to get it, seems a lot harder to find than underlay. We have a raised pond, with a waterfall to a shallow wildlife pond, which will have pebbles and risk of kids walking in it!! Was wondering about an underlay under the pebbles to protect it even further than the underlay and liner. Using 1mm firestone liner.
Iv had a 10 x 11m at 3m deep swimming pool iv dug it in my blue clay garden in England. Iv given up on it after 2 years as it loses water and iv now given up as keep filling it messes up the water quality. Over 3k im being quoted just for supply of a linner for it 😔
@@ThePondAdvisor I see! There is no chance I would get away without the epdm with just underlay? I suppose it depends on the results of the test holes. Will start digging!
@@Edward_Joseph_ sorry I did not make myself clean. One meter of clay is the thickness not the same 1mm thick like rubber so no if your buying the clay you would need a lot of bags “1m3” of clay instead of 1m2 of rubber.
EPDM Pond Liner or HDPE Liner: High-density polyethylene (HDPE) which are known for their chemical resistance and toughness. They are often used in industrial applications and landfills. The down side on smaller projects is it’s harder to install

There are so many different ways to line ponds. This is good advice for anyone who is struggling to make a choice.
Yep, EPDM is the best choice
He did a great job lining everything up. Explanations seem solid and hold water.
Glad it was helpful!
Another great, informative video. Thanks Any Pond, The Pond Advisor.
Thank you,
Amazing and information-packed comprehensive video on the pond liners, thanks.
Thank you 🙏
This was a clear, informative, excellent video. Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
live in a country where EPDM is a very new thing. i guess i gotta use some sort of fabric to ease the load of gravel on the pvc liner.
Yes protection is key
Good advice mate
Thank you
Very helpful and informative, cheers.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom and expertise. What do you think about 60 mil liner?
Thick great on bigger applications with big rocks, but harder to install on smaller applications, not as flexible as the thinner.

Hi Mark. Is it possible to add a second pond above a first that overflows into the lower one without joining the two?
Yes, as long as you have a 6” drop/overlap into the bottom pond/pool
Make sure the top pool/pond is not to big, water in motion

How do you feel about lldpe liners
What is the best option
Depends our liner of choice for most applications is 1mm EPDM Firestone Rubber

As long as the underlay is aquatic safe it can be used on top of the liner.

That’s quite a sizable chunk of rubber. In terms of waterproofing, 1mm of rubber is equivalent to a 1-meter thickness of clay.
will a 20 mil lldpe pond liner last to use it as a tarp for a boat?
short term maybe

If i'm digging a wildlife pond in a field with a high water table, would you go with epdm over an underlay? No introduced fish, no filter, no pump
Great question, I would use underlay, after digging test holes for 12 months or more. Summer levels could be totally different to current water level

Yes you can protect it both above and below and then add gravel. You can even drive machinery on this liner when protected enough
15 ton rocks are placed on EPDM on a daily basis
Protected of course
