Thanks for the efficient objective analysis. However, I wish you'd addressed any fish impacts, relative UV vulnerability and the longevity of RPE & EPDM.
hi, thanks for the video. Im curious as to what liner would be best for a pond/ swimming hole? It would get some foot traffic as it would be no more than 4 ft deep and would be installed over existing clay, and either sand or fabricated underlayment. My original idea was HDPE but I have also been looking at RPE. Which do you think would hold up better?
Can you please be more specific when you say "larger ponds". What do you consider a larger pond? We have shelves, 90° angles and are using flagstone and cobble. We would need a 21x21 sheet, what size do you consider that? And what liner?
I have Firestone pondgard that's been out there for more than 30 years and it's still going strong, but I have never had these plastic liners last for even a decade period most recently I've had the PVC liner in Thailand and I can't even get it to last 2 years in the Sun
Simply put, EPDM: more flexible but slighty more puncture prone, heavier by a good bit RPE: less flexible but less puncture prone, lighter and can be made in larger single pieces PVC: trash Having looked on Web Sites note the "warranty" on these. If they have very short warranty's you should avoid them. I've dealt with EPDM rubber and it seemed strong. I also am NOT sure he mentioned the MIL thickness on these? Which would play a huge role in longevity. He also mentions the less flexible as "sometimes" being a plus. Sure if you put this over puncture things, but having a void under the liner (because it flexes less) would be something that would not be desired. I feel proper prepared ground and EPDM would probably last the longest. But I also feel I'll be long dead if I use RPE over proper ground as well. If your using PVC I suspect you just plan on flipping the property you put this on. Shame on you.
Good video, but I would be interested to have comparison between BTL24A reinforced HPDE liner too. Do you have any information on that or any other reinforced HPDE liners?
Thanks great video. Some suggestions: Close ups for identification purposes and repair procedures for different liners. (Friends pond has leak but doesn't know history)

Hello Wasi, the Premium Grade RPE 30mil Laminated pond liner could work for your fish pond. Here is a link to more details on that type of liner www.everything-ponds.com/premium-grade-rpe-liner-high-uv-30-mil.html. If you have a lot of bends, and irregular shapes in your pond you would want to consider using the EPDM rubber. It's all dependant on your pond needs. Does it have vertical or sloping walls? You can use our liner sizing tool on our website to pick which pond best represents yours, allowing you to get a more accurate liner size www.everything-ponds.com/liner-size-wizard.html. If it has vertical walls you could use a liner 14' x 14' which would give you 1' extra on either side for anchoring in place. In order for us to better help you please email us at sales@everything-ponds.com
EPDM IS THE WAY TO GO MY 2000 GAL POND STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 20 YEARS 40 MIL, PUNCH A HOLE TWICE BOTH TIMES MY FAULT BUT EASY FIX I DONT THINK THE OTHER TWO COULD TAKE THE SUN OF PR PLANTING ZONE 13!
I don't think any liner is going to hold upto that if your expecting them in again id be fiber glassing it fairly soon as they will split any liner for sure
Hello. Yes, sometimes people use multiple layers of liners. It's kind of like buying insurance - you have the extra layer of protection. Using rubber overtop will allow the liner to lay better by smoothing out the creases of the RPE, this will also allow the stronger material to sit on the outside - where the strength of the liner is needed the most.
All of the RPE liners are NSF-61 certified, which means they are safe for human drinking water. We would recommend any RPE for human drinking water containment.
The RPE will stand up well to the occasional hooves or dog nails walking on the liner since neither of those things are that sharp. The real danger though is if a big animal ends up in the pond and then can't get out so it starts slashing around. That could potentially damage things. The best thing to do if you're expecting any kind of traffic on the liner is to protect the liner in some way. Put a protective layer over top like some geotextile fabric covered in river rock, or sand, or we've even seen people put down protective rubber mats, covered in a thin layer of aesthetic gravel.
I'm not sure, it would depend on what it was made out of. Also if it's for drinking water, you'll want to make sure the liner is NSF-61 certified so it doesn't leach into the water. All our RPEs are NSF-61 certified if you're looking for something like that.
Hello, thank you for the comment. The width/length are measurements of the edge of the pond liner from one side to the other side. Our pond liners are custom made allowing you to order any size liner you need - up to 60,000sqft. To determine the size of liner needed for your pond you will need to measure each side of the pond (the width and the length) as well as the depth (how deep it is). Here is a link to our pond size calculator, it has some visuals to aid you in understanding how to size a liner www.everything-ponds.com/liner-size-wizard.html. Hope this helps!
Mary Fisher The RPE liner in the video is 24 mil, but it also comes in 30 and 40 mil. The EPDM is 45 mil, but as you can see from the video the thickness doesn't really say anything about puncture resistance or strength.
Hey does anybody know if I could use black rubber liner that came off of an old roof job?… There’s no tears was just curious if it was OK to use thanks or will it hurt the fish?
If it's just EPDM rubber, similar to Firestone's EPDM, then I don't see why you couldn't use it. Might want to check for any punctures, tears or damage first since EPDM is quite soft and can get damaged fairly easily.
Everything Ponds ok thank u for the response . I’m not sure if it is epdm or not but I’m fairly certain my local home depot may know. As far as any damage I will check it out..I will make a video of the process in the near future .
We have all of the technical specs of each liner available on our website. RPE is more puncture resistant than EPDM. Please feel free to review the specs to see the puncture resistance of each liner from a technical standpoint.

Very good information, the Pond Liner HDRPE is much more resistant, long life, it is more economical considering that it lasts many years.

What was the mil on the EPDM, seems very thin. I guarantee you that you can't punch that pin as easily through with 45 mil EPDM.
