  • This week's guest is Helen Sanderson. Helen is a professional organizer, the creator of The Home Declutter Kit and the author of The Secret Life of Clutter.
We talk about our relationship with our team, the parallels between decluttering and productivity, why it's important to get clarity in everything we do and much more.
01:00 🏠 Clutter often results from decision fatigue, reflecting a reluctance to make choices at home.
05:33 🧘‍♀️ Decluttering involves understanding the emotional weight of possessions and balancing priorities.
16:32 📝 "Keepage" is keeping things due to habit; addressing mundane decisions frees mental space for productivity.
28:36 🤔 Introducing the "Don't-Know Draw"-a space to defer decisions, allowing time for gathering information.
40:13 🏠 Our homes reflect personality and values; balancing functionality and aesthetics is key to harmony.
44:05 🧠 Procrastination, often fuelled by perfectionism, is at the heart of clutter; overcoming perfectionism is crucial.
46:36 🌐 Completing tasks is essential; many people give up just before completion, contributing to the procrastination cycle.
48:40 🚢 "Real artists ship." Delivering and sharing work is crucial; don't let perfectionism hinder the process.
50:29 ❤️ Addressing clutter with compassion; the book aims to alleviate shame, encouraging kindness toward those struggling.

A good artist knows when one more stroke of the brush is going to ruin the whole painting.
I to used to procrastinate, but I had to put that off too❤

When I had a big apartment, I had a lot of books like you. But now that I have a small apartment. I save books on a kindle, have audio books or stream my books. I write a lot now.

I ask myself the following questions when deciding what to let go.
    1. Have I used in the past year?
    2. Can I rebuy in the future if needed?
    3. Would I buy if I saw it in a charity shop?

I can relate to your laptop conundrum. I’ve realised that a lot of modern day things don’t get done because I don’t know how to move forward with them. Once I realise that’s the problem then I can work my way forward by trying to find answers on the internet or asking around. So google how to wipe a hard drive for instance. So often I don’t move forward because the problem seems too overwhelming and I presume I won’t be able to do it. I’ve really progressed since I started breaking everything down into little questions I need to find an answer to and little jobs that need to be done. It’s like one of those yes/no flowchart thingies.

Breaking problems down into smaller pieces is always helpful. Also, trusting yourself that perhaps you CAN do it, if you only try. Good on you for making some progress! 🎉

It's a different world, someone there to take you coat when you come in! a cleaner, a gardener so all you have to do is a "little watering and mowing", presumably someone to take the green waste to the tip? All sounds absolutely wonderful. Where exactly is this land of plenty?

Look I am a lost cause. I too went to art schools, in fact am highly educated, hopelessly old and still have a mind that won't stop learning, remembering it all and love gardens, cats and in fact all flora and fauna. My friends seem to be dying at an alarming rate. Too much stuff, everyone knows. I like ENGLISH GARDENS. I have no interest in a perfect, pruned cut it down garden. Though gardens I love are lots of work. Just flourishing full of a riot of color...planned. But my back porch...yikes! The spare room. double yikes. I make art with my STUFF.
