I have watched/listened to this time and time again as a gentle companion while I putter my way from stuckness into cleaning/sorting. I love Laura’s approach, which is at once so humorous, so compassionate and so practical.
I sent this video to my grandmother, who shares with me a perennial sense of overwhelm at the way possessions accumulate in each of our homes. I love Laura’s reminders that as we grow and change, and as our interests evolve, so too does the relevance of the objects we choose to surround ourselves with. Her clarity, combined with a lack of judgment is such a gift to any who get to encounter her work! Thank you for sharing the videos of these talks, Laura! You’re stellar!

I've harbored such guilt and shame the past 10 years over my clutter. This particular video changed that!
After being hit by a car over a year ago, and having metal plates and 18 screws in one leg, my lifestyle changed. After seeing this video, I feel more emotionally ready and inspired to deal with the task!
    Thank you!!!

I fell on Sept 14 and have been in hospital 3 times since then. I’m not walking yet. Broke my right ankle, 3 times, have 9 titanium bolts and a rod in my leg. It’s cold now in Colorado and painful.
I can sit and do a few things. But not for 2-4 hours. Healing comes first. My husband can’t help much. He does what he can.
The ‘mess’ is only a mess. It will get more in order.
I’m not shopping to buy more to bring into the household. This is the key for me. I can get through a drawer in 20 minutes. Can’t stand up to cook or do any house dusting or cleaning yet.
The idea of letting things go will take me time. I’m making notes as I watch these shows! I get it. But being incapacitated right now since Sept 2021 has made me ‘rethink’ where I’m going. Not where I was. I wish to share the fun things I was involved in (like coloring cards) snd giving these things to folks who will enjoy the process. I enjoy doing some art work and crafts. I read a lot snd now sending my books to friends. It’s all a process.
Moving forward slowly daily! Trying to walk. It may be all thus year before I can. There is a light at the end of this situation in many levels.
      Pat in Colorado

    • @ClutterClarity
      @ClutterClarity  3 года назад +13

Yes, one of the massive misconceptions is the clutter is bad, or we're bad if we have a lot of clutter, when clutter is simply a natural outcome of an ever-changing, fast paced life. The mess we are in makes sense. Outcome of a certain pattern of thinking, a pattern of behavior... change the pattern, to bring a certain order and peace of mind to our lives. Thanks for commenting, and subscribing! New group coaching, online courses and videos coming asap. Enjoy, Laura

The French have a saying "the appetite comes from the eating". When it's in my own best interest that I do something that I don't really want to do, I tell myself that I just have to get myself to the place where the chore resides and look at it for a minute, assess my feelings and let my mental juices flow, ask yourself some pertinent questions.
Then go have a quiet private lunch, or a nap.
The second day I tell myself all I have to do is take one step further and examine the situation more deeply and tantalize myself with more questions.
The third day I tell myself to go back with intent to see and imagine what's in it for Me, Me, Me!
If the juices are getting a bit turned on just dive in looking for the pony in the horse shit.
The whole process is like warming up to a new lover...first you visit and chat, the next date you hug, third date you kiss, forth date you get married, lol.

"Stay engaged"!??!??! WHAT? Do you mean I can't get married? (Giggle!)
    I'm in my 9th decade!
I love you, Laura! In fact, I love you SO MUCH that I'd rather sit here, crochet and watch/listen to you than declutter! ;)
Can you imagine the stuff I'm facing? Wish you were here, but I can't let you into my house until I get it straightened up.
Always be you! You're so adorable, kind, hilarious, helpful, understanding, etc., etc., etc.! I'd come up with thousands of adjectives but my Thesaurus is in another room and I can't get to it due to the clutter between here and there.
You have truly helped me get to know me.
Thank you SO much for allowing me to be me and giving me time to do just that. It certainly helps with the decluttering process, both with stuff AND with the emotions that go along with this process.
    God bless you, dear one!
By the way ~ I have NO intentions to marry; plus I don't/won't have time/energy to!
This decluttering thing is something I intend to enjoy till I go HOME to be with Jesus.

She also reads to me from Audible, so I get a lot more done now. I wish I had found you before we moved. We basically left our house with most of the contents in it. We lost thousands of dollars doing it that way, ironically, but I still feel 100% better.

Thank you Laura! You speak such down to earth common sense. I think you are the only person I have found who covers all the issues I have. Mine began after 3 deaths close together plus children with such different views who have no idea what my life is like now I am disabled and my hobbies have to be limited to table-top activities not the long rambles in the countryside as before, so I need a hobby cupboard for all the craft items which they see as clutter. It was so good to hear the distinction between mess and clutter! Thank you! I am trying to deal with both. I think I have good ideas for organising the "stuff" I use regularly. I am held up by essential repairs to the house needing doing which are not finished yet.
Such wisdom: The biggest mistake is to do :Too much too fast too hard in too little time. Result=exhaustion. Your brain will resist doing it again.
And - Regular tidy and declutter of each area, like cleaning your teeth. Lovely. Then do it in a comfortable way like the Opera lady. I too shall listen to music. Thank you!

One challenge I really enjoyed was to just go around the house every day and gather 21 things to donate. If it was 21 pens or 21 old Christmas cards ( for crafting) I counted each and every item. Or maybe one belt or one plate etc. I kept track on a paper with hash marks. I remember one night there were like 45 items and I remember thinking, man this is fun lol. I had great success with it, donating 2 large boxes and a big handled shopping bag in a few months time. I've also had success with the box label sorting, Keep, Sell, Donate. Anyway, I loved what you said and wanted to encourage. God bless and keep on puttering. Reena 😻👍❤

Laura, I sooo love your content - particularly on the foundational first and FOREMOST step: EMOTIONAL!
I also looove that you provide definitions and decision-making guidelines that contribute to one's clarity and confidence that outlasts your coaching relationship!!
My question about loving an item and a criterion for keeping an item: what do you do with (an) item(s) that you love love (!) looking at (high aesthetic value - it cheers you up just looking at it on a daily basis), but you rarely use it and when you do, you not only enjoy the experience fully, but everyone else appreciates its beauty as well (I guess you can say it serves two purposes - 1) adds aesthetic value to the room even when you rarely use it and 2) when you DO use its full util value, it is fun, even if you rarely use it...?
I forgot about another factor: 3) I made it. It is a masterpiece. Oh, another one: 4) that it is a masterpiece now, is an enhancement to its original value - an heirloom.
I look forward to your input. Thanks so much! 💕

Further had whiteboard still wrapped; unwrapped to write your quote! Plus added list of tomorrow’s tasks. Feeling clearer than in years!! Love the 5 D’s-like more (D)iscussion of that...but,: Worry to Wonder; Concern to Curiosity--that, my friend, is your book title!!!!Xoxo.

So glad my videos have motivated you. A fresh perspective really does make a difference. You don't need to know all the answers to start, but you need to start to find the answers. We all need help along the way, and not meant to do everything alone. Keep on going!

Hi Lerycka Lee - thanks for your comment! Think of your "tasks" as "your intentions." They're yours, and the work does not need to be task orienting, but freeing. Build a routine and do what you can day to day. Practice non-force and simply show up and see how it goes. I wonder how it's going to work out - Voila. Drudgery to discovery :-) Thanks for subscribing, and ENJOY your progress. Laura

I understand. I'm just saying the stuff doesn't disappear. It still needs to be dealt with in the aftermath. Of course, people let go and move on. Hard to rebuild, yet grateful to be alive.

No it doesn't - we're getting rid of less, less trash, and passing it on. Thanks for watching, please subscribe to get more. Take care, Laura

You're right. Absolutely. You build a new life with gratitude. Doesn't have to be hard if you learn how to truly let go, without regret, and grow into who you are now. Take care, Laura

I give things away easily. The problem I have is that when people see my stuff out on display they want it. I tend to offer it to them when they say they really like it. I hide my favorite things so I do not give away what I really want to keep. The other day I put out an item I really love and ended up giving it away. What is going on with me?👀

14:00 Clutter is what does not add value (anymore) to your life..... You have 5 resources: Time, money, energy, space and skills. (I would add help from relatives incl. them allowing you to store stuff).

    • @ClutterClarity
      @ClutterClarity  5 лет назад

Thanks for your comment. Good point. In my mind, store stuff is in the space resource, helpers are in the energy (physical and emotional) resource. Enjoy and thanks for subscribing!

The five resources explanation and the question “What adds value to my present life?” were as helpful as the four criteria you explained in detailed. FYI I thought at first the “joy book” you mentioned was “The Joy of Less” about minimalism.

    Dear parents!
When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!
    Respectfully,
    Astra Viil

How do you help someone that is very defensive of their clutter..every surface is covered with stuff..nicknacks from thrift stores or fb marketplace..so many it's tedious to dust which really never gets done..picture frames sitting every where..a room full of old clothes and shoes..carpet from the 80's that literally stinks and she refuses to get knew flooring..ugh...I wouldn't care except she has a7 month old grand baby living there and he's recently gotten his first sinus infection and it's not going away..😓

Continuing.. this is a pretty small house with 5 people living there, 3 dogs and very little space to move around.. she's not a cleaner by any means and she openly admits this..the dogs are her source of love and thrifting brings her some sort of contenment.. the house looks like a thrift store now.. how do you break through to someone like this?

Also, if I am the "high priestess" of the house; if I am the one paying the bills and the mortgage, then I have the right to decide whether or not the rooms of children or adult children are allowed to become "ground zero" pits. I have the right to decide what can and cannot be stored in my garage.

Patty Amato; I like that Patty! I like too that mess is not necessarily clutter. I've had builders here and am waiting on more to do repairs. It's very trying. My children would just throw everything away but it's packed in boxes for when the builders finish. After all, I shall still need plates and clothes!

You need to be a little bit more loving to your mother a little more understanding what does it matter if she's cluttered you're not living there you're not cleaning it out. You can dump it all out after she dies. If she's not having to leave her home just help her clean don't help her get rid of anything. She doesn't have long to live letter enjoy the last years of her life😢 (your turn is coming you feel a lot different about it then)
