    I have struggled with mental illness and my mental health since I was a kid. Before I even knew what those terms were. After years of depression, anxiety, and even an attempt to take my life, I never thought I would be able to live without SSRI medications. I clung to them because it was the only thing that made my mind quiet, but it also made me a zombie. Microdosing has given me control of my mental health for the first time, and they essentially gave me my life back.

      I’ve been researching on psychedelics and it’s benefits to individuals dealing with Anxiety, Depression, ADHD and from my findings, they really work and I’ve been eager to get some for a while but its been difficult to get my hands on them.

      The Trips I've been having really helped me a lot. I’m now able to meditate and I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well

      I feel the same way too. I put too much on my plate and it definitely affects my stress and anxiety levels. I am also glad to be a part of this community.

    The worst part is when you know these fears and anxiety is not necessary. Like it’s always worse in your head and not the reality, but Social Anxiety usually starts with bad experiences with social situations as a young child.

    Psilocybin containing mushrooms saved my life. The drastically reduced my benzodiazepine withdrawal allowing me to quite illicit pill addiction after three years of heavy daily use before it would had became medically dangerous to quit. It has also helped me survive depression.

    I have always been a performer kind of person, so things like talking in front of many people in a speech is never a problem. It's the unofficial, "relaxed" social situations that scares me. The ones "without" expectations, where I feel the most judged.

      very similar here. Performing with my band on a sage or giving a speech is not a great problem. But those small talk conversations are really tough. And it got worse over time, so when I go to a party it is very often, that I end up sitting by myself on the side...

      I relate to this so much.. I was prom queen in high school and for some reason have found that I've gotten either more introverted or more sa since. I work in tech and the good thing is that remote work is very accepted, however it's hard for me to spend lots of time with my coworkers and I really get in my head. 5 years of meditation and yoga helped with this emensly but I recently "fell off the wagon" when in person work started. Hoping gradual exposure helps out..

      This is so interesting! For me it’s the exact opposite. I feel very relaxed at parties or meeting people for the first time, but when I have to give a presentation or speech at school or work (and even with lots of preparation) I feel the most anxiety. It’s in those more “professional/official” settings that I feel the most judged. I also think that the pandemic got me very comfortable being at home, so now that I’m back to more in-person activities I feel like I have to get used to it all over again. One day at a time lol

      I personally think it's because when you're on stage or acting, or doing a speech, it's usually planned out and rehearsed what you're going to do and say and a lot of time it's not something that shows who you are. When you're just chatting socially, you're exposing you, and that's what's get terrifying.

      I used to dreadthose types of social interactions too but living with extroverts or people who just like to talk a lot and can interact really easily taught me how to like, act more relaxed and see that people just want some attention sometimes, or like want to coneect and know they're not alone in what they think about things... so it made me less anxious about that. If it goes for a long time it might make me really awkward tho 😅😅😅😅
      But doing presentations or anything for big crowds is terrifying still

    I have no problem with people not wanting to talk to me, not like me or be my friend, none of those stuff bother me. What does BOTHER me, is when people label me as "Quiet", "Boring" and "Shy", when they ain't even trying to get to know me themselves or are willing to give me a chance. I don't like when people judge me straight away, when they dont know me personally! It just makes me even less interested in showing my real self to them. Having Social Aniexty really is a struggle!

      Omg this is exactly how i feel. I often get told im too quiet, but once they say that my social anxiety makes me become more quiet around them because i know they are judging and the pressure is on me to try to not be too “quiet”

      I also feel like that. I know one parent in particular would criticize us harshly if me or my siblings did anything "wrong" in public and it quickly set a standard for the rest of my life. I wouldn't be surprised if they struggled with social anxiety themselves.

      I have researched and found out that shrooms are very helpful , it has really helps to reduce anxiety and depression . I would love to try magic mushrooms but I can't easily get some , Is there any realiable source I can purchase one

    Those signs are all so relatable. I’ve been incredibly relieved to be working from home since the pandemic started. My digestion got SO much better due to the reduction to my daily stress.

    The stress sweat for me is probably one of the worst symptoms. There are many times I have to change my shirt because it gets soaked from sweat. I really appreciated about changing thoughts that you don’t have to immediately go to a positive thought. I’ll admit that as you first said it my thought was yeah easier said than done but how you did it that actually seems in reach. I have social anxiety and generalized anxiety so can shit talk myself quite well, trying to change that to positive thoughts most often didn’t work and usually led to more shit talking. I have not tried neutral thoughts and will give that a try.

    I really like the changing those mean things you say to urself in ur head. I also absolutely love that you weren't immediately trying to turn them positive.
    I get told that all the time and lots of ppl don't realize that its not that easy (I personally put it under the toxic positivity umbrella)

    I think for many of us the pandemic helped to realize that we don’t have to live that way.
    With daily anxiety that is, thus why many are refusing to return to a regular job and seek to work from home.

    Well, I guess I have social anxiety. I fit the description exactly. Even at work, where only five people are employed, including me, I prefer sitting at my own table far away from everyone else. I can’t function in crowds of more than a couple of people. I even try to avoid a couple of people in a room at the same time. During holidays when we all gather in the break room together I feel like I wish the time was over and I could go back to my table. I have no friends at all and I never go to social events.

    I started watching your videos a few weeks ago hours before going to my first therapy appointment and they're so helpful. You're such a beautiful soul. Thanks for making these videos. I have social anxiety and it has stopped me from getting my first job at 22, I'm so scared to even apply to a job. Like you said I notice my self talk and talk to myself with more love, patient and compassion, it really helps. Same as taking deep breaths or focusion on looking or feeling different things.

    My social anxiety has gotten leagues better than it used to be due to a job that caused me to interact with strangers every day. It still weirds me out when any of my work gets more attention online than I would get in a group of people. Behind a screen I’m good to go, but in person, I’m scared. If my face isn’t attached to it we are good to go

    My social anxiety has gotten more severe as I have gotten older, compounded by the pandemic and changes in my work life. I just want to add that I so appreciate you Katie, and thank you for being so real. It really helps to let me know that I’m not alone. I know this may sound kinda strange, but knowing you have things you’re dealing gives me permission for me to recognize and acknowledge my own stuff.

    I’m realizing at 40 that I didn’t actually overcome this totally when I was younger. But I built my entire successful life around never having to be put in situations where I even feel it. Now my biggest issue is I’m realizing other people don’t focus on getting home asap like I do. I always have to get home immediately. Never a random stop caused by someone else. It’s like my mind says ok I’m allowing you to go out and eat. But stop on the way home and get milk ? Out of the question. Do I do it ? Of course. But I wish it wasn’t this constant race to get home. I think it’s from decades of setting my life up to avoid social interactions I hadn’t pre thought about and prepared for. Anyways it would take me hours to really explain this. But I’ve only ever heard of one other person even know what I’m talking about and it was about their father.

    Yep I’ve been definitely struggling with social anxiety of more recent times. I’m in year 12 now so soemtimes I’ll be sitting in a class of people and suddenly get anxious and all in my head about are people looking at me etc. after school I’ll go through a memory of how I acted towards someone and I will engage in negative self talk like “I’m so stupid, why was I so stupid now they think I’m a idiot”. Sometimes I’ll avoid eye contact especially holding it for longer periods of time. Social anxiety sucks bc you feel like you’ve wasted all your energy and put it into worrying and that makes you feel stupid as well and you feel a lack of control over it. This definitely started in quarantine as well and just progressed. Thanks for the video :)

    Hi Kati. I am new to your channel and I really love your content! 🥰I am a classic example of social anxiety. It was really bad when I was a child because I was bullied relentlessly in school from the 5th grade to the 10th grade. I always used to believe that I wasn't good enough to be anyone's friend and that I looked funny. I however, had two secret weapons to overcome these awful feelings of being socially anxious. My mom and my ability to develop a sense of humour, which I use nowadays to put new people I meet at ease, so as to take control of social situations. My mom is my secret weapon, as she is one of the few people on this earth who understood my insecurities as a child. She used to work as an Early Childhood Educator and always used to make an extra effort to put socially anxious kids at ease and make them feel welcome. She really boosted my confidence through the decades and though I still overthink and re-play my social interactions, especially the awkward ones, I do feel more comfortable in my skin these days and I have learned to laugh off even the most awkward and embarrassing encounters with strangers! I have no idea how I did it, but if I can do it, anyone can! I also have a career in Data Analytics. So, for anyone out there, with Social Anxiety who is looking for some inspiration and positivity, you have my love and support because I know exactly what this feels like.

    Thank You Katie!!! Physical pain mixed with Cerebral Palsy and neuropathy after a cervical surgery has caused me to developing acute social anxiety. The souffrance I experienced for the first 4 years of 11 was so elevated that I did not go anywhere other than doctor appointments for nearly 3 of these years. Just wanted to let your viewers know I was able to get back to almost pre surgery with the help on my dear mobility service dog.
    My dog “Bubba” is 9 years old now and thanks to him I’ve regained my independence. I go everywhere my power wheelchair will take us and as long I can enter & leave safely when I desire. I’ll still avoid some outings like, anything that would affect Bubba in any way or if I think it will take too much of our energy.

    What about differentiating between social anxiety and ASD? I've always thought I just had extreme social anxiety, but I can relate to most of the spectrum of symptoms within autism. And how do we know asd + ppls reactions to us isn't creating the social anxiety?

    Hey Jeans! Just started watching you today because I loved you in the WMMA episodes you've been in! Anywho, something that works well for me is being around children/working with children. I'm not a mom, maybe one day, but I'm an RBT. I practice ABA therapy with children who have been diagnosed with ASD. I've been working with individual's who have DD's since I was 18, with the exception of one job. And I dreaded going to that one job every single day, I was so uncomfortable interacting with anyone and everyone, minus the kiddos that would come with their parents. I love the freedom of being able to be a big kid at times, being my weird and silly self, and being around little humans that aren't anything other than themselves. Thank you for the videos and work you put into them, instant fan!

    what causes me anxiety and unhappiness is my perceived ideal life which hasnt been manifested yet and idk if its ever achievable. there is no limit to it so its become inconceivable.
    sometimes the ones who seem to got it all are the anomaly.. the fluke in nature..
    it gives me unhappiness because my daily experiences in life had become muted in my perception in comparison to that which is greater in my imagination yet its not here and now thus is not real...
    but it consumes my mental space into negativity of not being good enough

    I have this and it is so hard to get thru this right now. But I did better than expected at my son’s graduation. I hope my new doctor will address this and help me learn ways to cope. This is emotionally painful.

    The thing that curbed most of these symptoms for me was having kids. They became my focus instead of how self conscious and miserable I felt in social situations. I’m nearly 71 now, and still no social butterfly. I still don’t like crowds or being in a room of people I don’t know. I still tend to feel uncomfortable and out of place. But it’s manageable now and I can keep it under control.

    I'm soon 40 and still have Social Anxiety... I'm doing exposure therapy but I feel the progress is really slow.
    Anyway thanks for doing this video.
    I forgot about listing one's fears from lowest too highest anxiety.
    I'll do a new one.
    One big step for anyone with SA is first to acknowledge that you have a mental illness and it's not just being shy.
    It took me many years to acknowledge it and instead of working on getting better I didn't listen to myself and just endured it.
    To a point that I can't go back to work, just the thought of it triggers a panic attack.
    So to you my beautiful friend of pure awesomeness, stop enduring it alone and get help before it becomes too much.

Agradezco a Dios por encontrar tus vídeos. Eso la ha ayudado mucho.     Hi Kati, its good to see a number of new videos being created on Social Anxiety - as it can be quite distressing for many people. Often those suffering from social anxiety do not present for treatment or therapy either...so making information readily accessible online is all the more important. Differentiating shyness from social anxiety is also very important. Are you planning to do more videos on this topic?

    Wins: Lume body deodorant - knowing I won’t smell sweaty means I actually sweat less. Making a commitment, e.g., signing up for set-up crew at club meetings so I won’t decide to stay home at the last minute. Retiring early - my IBS has calmed down significantly now that I don’t have to worry about how I’m perceived every minute of the day. I didn’t realize how pervasive it was until I removed myself from the stressful work situation. Thunderstorm audio to fall asleep, with visualization of a place where it’s happening to calm my brain from the day’s happenings. Good tips, as always Katie!

    I suffered from social anxiety from a very very young age. It was crippling af. I still have social anxiety but I’ve learned to manage it very well. I don’t think social anxiety EVER just “goes away”.

    Diaphragm Breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth only revs me up more. Diaphragm Breathing in and out through the nose calms me.

    Thank you for treating every topic (and your audience) with respect and kindness. Menopause worsened my anxiety, as for many women, and has sadly been almost constant last few years. It takes up sooo much mental space and energy. Hormone Replacement Therapy and psychotherapy helps, as does talking with trusted friends n family members but it's still tough at times. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos xx

      I relate to what you say. I’m going through perimenopause and I find my anxiety and depression exacerbated and I feel distanced from any coping abilities I used to have, like enjoying alone time and being creative with my hands. Menopause needs more study and understanding and compassion in society, this phase in women’s lives is real and intense and I wish there was more knowledge and support in the medical professions for it.

      @@meghanmouse2401 please find yourself a sympathetic doctor or naturopath or similar who specialises in women's health. My male doctor is wonderful but I needed to add a female doctor who specialised in menopause. She and her care made a huge difference. I also relied on online menopause sites and discussion forums at different times. Free, available 24/7 and so so informative !! Without those resources I would have either physically assaulted someone, divorced or taken my own life - it's been a tough 8 years ! Good luck, my love 💓

    I am 100% that. I was so happy to work from home. I just learned to not have a panic attack when declining going to a party or joining coworkers for lunch. I decided it is healthier for me to be solo at lunch everyday for at least that half an hour than fake and stress like crazy in the group with others. I talked to myself that people will not hate me for it, if they knew how unwell it makes me they would rather want me to feel good and free to do what I like.

    My uncle severly suffered from anexity such he used not to attend social occasions and Fridays religious services he is now much better and lives his life very normally with no social fear he told me to face my problem when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder I.

    My doctor told me the chemical in our brain for fear/anxiety is the same chemical as excitement..so the choice is in my hands. I can be afraid or excited..i choose💯🖤

      It doesn't work like that. If that was true, why would anyone have anxiety instead of being excited? It might be a way to deal with it for someone with low anxiety or "normal" anxiety, but this is totally not true for people with constant and difficult problems with anxiety.

I feel alone with this and have had family tell me that I wasn't dealing with this even though it's been my whole life that I've been dealing and this really helped me feel like I wasn't just faking it or making up some excuse as a crutch as to why I have such a difficult time. ✌

    The worst symptom for me is having a hard time concentrating during conversations/not being present. I am playing over what I will say in my head and forgetting what is being said in the conversation. I end up not being able to say much and having to ask for someone to repeat themselves many times...it seems like I'm not interested or don't care...but it's actually the opposite, I care so much that I'm focusing too hard on the conversation, but getting lost. I'm not a great conversationalist and my self consciousness gets in the way of me making friends. It doesn't help that I have a long string of rejection that I keep trying to stay positive through.

    I’d second guess myself a lot! (Self consciousness). Also avoid certain situations either when I’m in the situation, or just altogether not even go. That anxiety turns into a fear and does Not Stop!

    For me the stress sweat is one of hte major things keeping me from gettting better. My first reaction to the anxiety is the sweating, and that feeds into my anxiety alot. Just thinking of meeting someone for the first time and having to shake hands with them while my hands are all sweaty or meeting a friend that will go for a hug and them feeling my sweaty back, makes my anxiety just escalate and I start sweating even more.

    Nice! I love that you talk about my favorite phobia. It makes my life so much more difficult... but hey, expo I guess will fix it XD
    A year ago I wasnt even able to take the train/bus, walk into a shop or being somewhere with lots of people. Now I feel uncomfortable while doing it and still get overwelmed sometimes but I am able to function in my life most of the time! Go and do your exposition! It is hard and it feels like hell but it actually helps ♥

    This was me throughout school! I couldn't stand staying after classes with others because I at that point I had horrible stomach cramps. And it was constant judgement from professors, classmates that learned from professors to be judgemental. I felt hated all the way, even by "friends", even when I got home I was receiving judgement from my mom when she was asking me why I care not being liked by anybody, I shouldn't care. It felt like a major shift going to university where none of that mattered, people didn't bother judging me, it's a waste of time. Probably small town folks are more closed minded.

    Its so annoying because I KNOW I have social anxiety. There is no doubt in my mind. But my therapist isn’t acknowledging it. She didn’t want to diagnose me because she thinks my fear of social interactions comes from my PTSD. But it doesn’t, I can FEEL the difference.
    I know and feel the difference of when I am having a panic attack from my social fear, and when I am having a PTSD attack. Because my focus is different.
    She thinks that I might be scared in social situations of what people will DO to me, that I am scared they will harm me like I was harmed in the past.
    And yes that fear is there, in the sense of my PTSD.
    But for my social fear it is about what people think of me. I have all the signs in the book and she just call them symptoms. But I know I have the disorder. And it’s really really frustrating that she’s not acknowledging it😭 I wish she could just borrow my brain for a day, and then diagnose me correctly🥲
    I think she is a good therapist I do, and I really like her so I don’t want to transfer. But I just wish she could get that diagnosis correct😭
    She also hasn’t diagnosed me with dermatillomania which I KNOWWW I have😭😭 I have tried hinting but it doesn’t seem like she has even heard of it. It’s really frustrating all of it…

    Being quiet is just my nature now, since I have dealt with social anxiety most of my life.
    What is the best way for a guy like me to start dating again after so many years?
    I never really had the confidence to just approach women and just ask them out, due to my social anxiety of course.
    Even now without all that anxiety, it just feels too weird or I just don't feel that I can do it. It is like I need to get to know her a bit first before I ask someone.
    In the past it would take so long to get to know someone that I was interested in, that it could be months or even years before I actually ask her out.
    At least I did force myself to talk to people even though I wasn't easy for me to do. But guess what? The more I did it, talk that is, the easier it got.
    Now this just didn't happen overnight, it was just a gradual process that took many years. So I hope that helps you a little and gives you hope.
    Anyone else on here on here that is, who may be struggling with social anxiety.

    I thought I was over social anxiety for good but it turns out, I still have it. Not at an extremely crippling, socially alienating kind level anymore but now I just have it in a huge pain in my ass kind of level.
    But you know what, Im damn proud of myself for getting here.
    It feels surreal to me that some people don’t actually have those kind of symptoms on a daily basis. Just imagine, what a life

    This was me between the ages of 9 and 30...I'm 34 now and started taking Lexapro for depression which seems to have helped but SA still rears its ugly head every now and then

    I had a lot of teen social anxiety and it got better in my 30's but now I feel more like my teenage self again, just not wanting to be around people. Maybe part of it is that there is so much intolerance these days and so much narrow minded labeling that I find it hard to even talk about things.

    I have bad social anxiety. I had breakfast with my friend on Wednesday, and I about had a panic attack. I ended up leaving my job due to social anxiety. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get on disability, so I've basically been living off my family for the past 2 years. It sucks.

    I quit college because of the requirement of Speech class, and have been stuck at my part-time job for the last 20+ years. Also moved out to the country so I can go outside without fear. The physical symptoms are exhausting. I desperately want to change but frankly, people scare me. It makes me sad sometimes to know I have missed a lot of opportunities and milestone celebrations over the years. I wouldn’t wish social anxiety on anyone.

    Its interesting i resonate very strongly with #1 and someone #3,4 however not at all #2. I don't let my thoughts stop me from anything physically. For me it's only in my head and all it does it change my thoughts and maybe sometimes I feel self conscious in conversation but usually I am present. Honestly what gets me through in social situations is confidence and the mentality of who cares and you can't just say it you have to believe it.
