As a never mormon, I just want to tell you how much I love and appreciate your channel. I love all your authentic videos and commend and appreciate you both. It's one of my favorite channels.
Same here, never mo but am ex Christian. Looking forward to hearing about their journey out of the church. I’d seen their previous video about this from a couple years ago. Their approach is excellent. Respectful but also prepared to call out inconsistencies and harm being done.
Yeah...me too. My grandmother was the last one to leave the church (from the beginning her family were in it). I am really glad I was not raised LDS. But many of the good parts of her upbringing, she passed along.
Jesus said he was the way the truth and the life he also said you must be born again. God brought you out of the false doctrine of the Mormon church to bring you into a real relationship Jesus Christ.
I was born and grew up in Japan. Most Japanese people, including me, were raised without religion. We do some costumes that are originated by Shinto, but when it comes to doctrine and real life restrictions, it's none. We just historically learned that nature is beyond human understanding, and that's how we are taught about the strange or miraculous things in this world. Which is so different from the Western perfect-singular-god concept. We do have some Gods' stories, but they are similar to the Greek gods' myths. From my experience, not having a religion is ok, not believing in God is ok, and having any religion is also ok. I feel that Western people tend to have a feeling of "People have to believe at least something," but I see that as a part of very unique Western culture. There are good and bad ppl in any group regardless of religion, race, or nationality. Anyway, I love you guys. You guys are proving that two really smart people with real-life experiences create awesome lives! :)
I feel like the Japanese Shinto approach is somewhat similar to a lot of non-religious people in culturally-Christian countries - I grew up _knowing_ the Christian stories and doing Christmas, but I mentally shelved Bible stories next to the mythology books I had. I was a teenager before I realised that for some people, religion is actually a belief and not just a cultural practice that you do because you just...do. I don't even really call myself atheist because that feels too much like it was a conscious choice I came to, rather than it just never occurring to me that I _should_ have any religious beliefs
When you say 'western', I assume you mean American. The USA is way more religious than most western European countries. I'm from a western European country and I was also raised more or less without any relion. Most christians there (except for a small minority) are cultural christians, nit necessarily religious.
@@mn9129 American here, and you're definitely right that the USA is more religious than western Europe, but I think even the average American experience is closer to what you describe than the life of an average Mormon. I was raised by atheists in America and while I had an awareness my experience was different from most of my friends, there was enough diversity of what particular denomination kids were that no one could single me out as "The Atheist". I think even the average "devout" American thinks their doing well enough by going to Church on (most) Sundays, knowing (most of) the 10 commandments, and arguing about certain hot button political views (and the devoutly religious can be in either side of most of those at this point). They definitely would not be able to get into doctrine or scripture or church policy to the extent that most of these ex Mormon's are capable of.
It's really incredible that you, as a couple, were able to reach the same conclusions at the same time. I don't think that's terribly common. It's a testament to the open communication, intimacy and trust between the two of you. Really impressive.
Congratulations on tackling such a tough subject with respect, sensitivity, and honesty. You did an amazing job of sharing your journey while not judging or condemning others for their journey. You both have beautiful hearts and spirits. I was blessed today; thank you.
Sam and Melissa - enjoyed and watched the entire episode, and I went through the exact same thing, with the exact same questions as you did! You shared a wonderful story and with such respect too!! Sam, you said you "hurt your family, because of your your decision to leave your faith.....twice." No, Sam YOU DID NOT HURT ANYONE. You did what you felt was best for you (and your family). Religious belief is a personal choice and THEIR REACTION TO THE CHANGES YOU MADE is their decision and their problem,,,,,,,, not yours. You were simply being true to yourself and everyone should respect that. The fact they got hurt is not on you.... its on them. It's not right to say you hurt them. You didn't.
Thank you so much for this video. I was raised in the United Methodist church. I converted to Mormonism when I was in my early 20s. I was married in the temple in South Jordan, Utah. I left the Mormon church a few years later. I currently attend a Methodist church with my children but have been struggling with some faith issues recently. Thank you so much for being so open with all of us. Your thoughts are comforting and let me know that I am not alone in this journey.
It takes much more intelligence to ask questions than to do the same thing the whole life without asking! You're so great guys! Your children will thank you one day!❤
Thank you guys for sharing so openly, honestly and meticulously. I have been loosely following your channel ever since the Peter Santanello series and that was always a big question that I had, what do you all really believe? So when this video popped up, I knew I had to watch it. And wow, It was almost like reliving our story. Even though we were raised in a very different religion there were so many things that you all talked about that my wife and I lived through as well. We were both born and raised in the old order Amish religion, then transition to New Order Amish only to eventually leave that as well. For us, we never doubted that the God of the Bible that we were taught about as young kids was the one and only true God. Our big problem was, number one the fact that our culture is ruled by fear, and secondly, we were taught that no one could know for sure whether they would go to heaven or not when they die. Long story short, we are now born again Christians and members of a Baptist Church. I know that may sound like we just joined another religion, but here’s what I would say. We are Christian first and Baptist second. We believe the God of the Bible is not a religious God , but a relational God who desires interaction and relationship with us as we live life. That is our belief and our experience. We are members at a Baptist Church not because Baptist is the one true religion, but it’s the place that God led us too and our purpose is to be part of the mission of building God‘s kingdom. So to us, it’s not about what the church can do for us, but what we can do for God‘s kingdom as we walk in relationship with him. Thank you all for sharing your story.
Very excellently expressed. I am a born again believer. I know who God the Father is. Jesus is my Savior, the Holy Spirit my Guide and comforter. Three in One God. The Holy Trinity.
I'm so glad that you guys have come out of the LDS religion with your marriage intact. It's hard to hurt people, but you always need to do what is best for you and your family.
You two are just the best! I am a therapist (for over 30 years in AZ and CA) and find your content informative while being so respectful and compassionate to to others.
Thank you! We are glad you found out while you are still young. We are in our 70s. We’ve been out 5 years. Life long member my husband is a convert. It’s hard! But we are at peace. You two are amazing!
I wish my parents would leave the church too. They are in their 70s and are still very devoted to the Mormon faith. What woke you and your husband up? I have no idea how to help my parents😢
I’ve never heard Sam speak with this kind of authority, confidence, and raw emotion in a video. So proud to see you both coming into your own and breaking past some of those barriers - I know this stuff is so hard to talk about!! I’m an exvangelical (Pentecostal) but share many similarities in my story.
A very good episode! My wife and I went through a faith crisis around 2018-2019 while our oldest son was on a mission. I finally left the church in 2019 at the age of 47 ( I found it ironic that I refer to it as my “ days of 47). Thankfully my Wife left the church as well instead of leaving me. Your story is so different yet so similar at the same time. Unfortunately our oldest son still to this day has hardly if anything to do with us ( which I can’t blame him cause I taught him his whole life that the church is true, and then I leave… I can’t help but think that he feels I am such a hypocrite). Fortunately our other two children ( adults now as well) have accepted us and our decision . … keep sharing, I enjoy your content!
@@Aaron.Thomas oh man I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve been out for nearly 5 years now, and honestly, so many of the reasons have blurred. Mostly because I just try not to think about as much anymore. My oldest son was on a mission and I was the elders quorum president at the time. There was so many things that I saw behind the scenes that were claimed to be revelation or inspiration from leaders, but it was obvious that it wasn’t. I found myself just searching for truth, tired of all the placating and hypocrisy I saw in leadership. I came across a RUclips video of Jeremy Runnells’ excommunication and was shocked at how rude and disrespectful his Stake President was. It was also obvious that it didn’t matter what truth or sound reasoning for his questions that he brought to the table, it was clear that the Stake President had already made up his mind. An absolute kangaroo court. I came across the video before I had ever heard of or read the CES letter. I had many of the same questions he did. Once I started down the rabbit hole, the hole just kept going with every subject I researched I was surprised at the things I found in all the hidden truths. I found myself suffering from extreme anxiety, trying to fulfill my calling as Elders Quorum President. In fact, my anxiety became so bad that I almost couldn’t function in my everyday life. Once I finally realized that I no longer believed in the church my anxiety grew because I had a son on a mission and a true believing spouse, and I was worried of the consequences of telling her. She could tell something was wrong and would ask, but I would just come up with excuses that danced around the issue without actually going there. I would talk about things with her theoretically, so, as not to alarm her about my faith crisis, however, eventually about eight months later, I finally told her. When I finally came clean, I had already introduced her to the CES letter, and other truth claims about the church that we’re obviously not true. Fortunately, for me, she listened to what I had to say studied some of the subjects, and the topics that I had brought up and within less than a month she told me that she believed that I was right and that the church was not true, at least not, as presently constituted. It’s kind of weird, because I actually found myself thinking well, I can’t believe that all this time I thought the FLDS were completely out of their minds for believing the things they believe, but then it turns out that I was just as out of my mind, as I had always thought they were. In fact, I actually find fundamentalist to actually have more character and integrity for at least standing by what they believe. At least, for the most part, it seems like they held true to their convictions and their teachings, but the mainstream LDS church. All it has done is lie and deceive and hide and backpedal on things that they claimed were absolutes. I could really go on forever, but I guess all I can say for anyone else going through it is that first year is a absolute nightmare. You find yourself lost in the world. find yourself without a tribe, you find yourself questioning every decision you make. And of course you find yourself instantly being ostracized by those who claim to love you and care about you. I find Russell M Nelson to be a borderline narcissist. I feel that all of his temple building is a combination of his narcissism ; ie, him, wanting to be the one to go down in history as the temple building prophet. It seems he wants to outdo all those who came before him. -I also can’t help but believe that the recent boom in temple building is some sort of a money laundering scheme, especially now that they have been caught lying about all the money they’ve been hoarding. The leaderships hypocrisy is criminal I believe because they’ve always claimed that we are all in it together as a church of volunteers, and that we are all striving and sacrificing to build Gods kingdom here on earth. Yet, we find out that those at the top are paid. And paid well, plus all of the perks. And there children all get free healthcare and college tuition. I have put in endless hours in callings not only in the church, but also in the Boy Scouts., never once being compensated or reimbursed for any expenses. I had no idea that there were so many pedophiles and losers in the churches scouting program hurting the young men until after I left the church. You see, I was stupid enough to believe that the leadership had inspiration from God and they were always calling good leaders, but then when I found out about all the abuses I thought how was that possible if God was inspiring the leaders of the church on who to call to such positions. I finally realized that is why I was constantly being called to that position. It wasn’t because I was a good leader, it was because the church was constantly being sued by parents for all the abuses to the point that the church finally had to start introducing background checks on leaders. So it wasn’t inspiration that drove their decisions, it was the hush money that they were paying out to all the victims that was starting to come to light among the public. So there I was constantly giving of my time because apparently they had too many weirdos. But was I ever compensated? NO, but I certainly used up almost all of my vacation time, weekends, holidays, you name it, donating it all to the church in one way or another, only to discover that here I was constantly sacrificing by paying tithing, fast offering, and then paying for my son‘s mission all to find out the church leaders are all being paid for their time, yet they still get to enjoy their vacation time. They still get to enjoy their holidays and their room and board are always paid for when they travel. They get the best healthcare that we the tithe payers are paying for while many of us go without all those things. They want the widows mite to fill their filthy pockets. I’ll stop, cause I could keep going forever… hang in there, and follow your gut. If something they say don’t feel right to you, it’s probably because it isn’t…
My experience was with the Jehovah's Witnesses, but it is interesting to compare the experiences of those that leave the LDS church and JWs. There has been abuse issues in the JW religion too. I noticed how the governing body of JWs were asking more and more for money, even from those that had little, using the widow example from the gospel to guilt into giving, while they live in a nice area with lake and forest and all things looked after. The governing body of JWs are said to be directed from God, but now I realise they can't even understand simple context in the Bible.
Thank you for normalizing thoughtfulness over conformity to beliefs, and in such a kind, respectful way. From an atheist, who can’t even have a thoughtful discussion with my family about beliefs, this video was a pleasure.
Lifetime Presbyterian here; thank you both for sharing your journey. In my church we are free to doubt, question, and admit we don’t know for sure. As a child I did not appreciate that but as an adult I treasure it. You are clearly two intelligent, incredibly thoughtful people and I think God is incredibly proud of you. 😘😘
I went to the Presbyterian church for a year. Enjoyed it. Up until the preacher told me I didn't love my girls because I wouldn't make them get baptized. They were 7ish, 8ish. I didnt believe in me making their life choice of baptism. I actually kicked him out of my home for being so disrespectful. He also told me I needed to tithe. And that too was a personal choice. Never went back. I just got out of the 2x2s. Look that one up. So subtle at mind bending. I was sucked in and never knew it.
What a wonderful story you have shared with us. I have so much respect for you both. You are a brave, honest, respectful and kind. Your children, families, friends and neighbors are lucky to have you two in their lives. Much love to you.
That's what the apostle Paul said in 1Corinthians 13:12 Right now I see in a darkened mirror but in the end I will see clearly when I see Him face to face. If the greatest missionary in the bible didn't know everything, it's ok for us to have doubts and questions. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
I feel encouraged after watching your blog/videos. I am a Christian and love God. Thank you for sharing and representing a true bonded married couple ❤
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your thoughts and being so respectful! My husband came to me over a year ago telling me he no longer believed and gave me the option to leave our marriage if that’s what I needed for myself. I then began to dig deeper into the Mormon faith and what I believed. I’m still kind of a fence sitter. We are different stages in our deconstruction and that’s okay. It’s so nice to hear though that I’m not alone! Thank you again!
I’ve been grappling with leaving for a long time. I too have had a problem with the direction that the church is going. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
I’ve been in the church 50 years- I joined on my own as a 15 year old girl. My kids are grown, my now husband not a member. I attend my meetings and the Temple alone. After Covid I really began to miss the church I grew up in- it seemed to be gone, the community gone. What happened? New leadership? How could one prophet encourage us to be so involved in the “I’m a Mormon” campaign and the very next one tell us that was evil??? I began to suspect more and more that this is just a business and these are decisions of a CEO.
Hebrews 1:1-2 says that God no longer speaks through prophets and he now speaks through His Son Jesus Christ. So the whole Mormon Theology of prophets and revelators who can change the Word of God is just made up.
Faith doesn't have to be complicated. Just read through the New Testament in the bible. Churches are supposed to be autonomous, not run by an association that is over a bunch of congregations and with rules to follow.
Well done Sam and Melissa. Well done. You are full of grace and authenticity, showing such respect for everyone else’s journey as you continue yours. Love is always the greatest of all truths.
I've been hoping for this video for a while. As someone who has been married for many many years and has been through a search for faith and is now agnostic(married to an athiest), you guys seem like marriage goals. I love how you talk to and about each other with such respect and admiration. The love and respect you have for each other is so obvious and that is so important. I know you are helping so many people.
I feel that someone's faith journey is very personal and perhaps everlasting. It is absolutley okay to "not know for certain" and continue to search and learn throughout our lives. It is a journey - not a destination!! Much love and many thanks to both of you for sharing your journey thus far.
I think admitting not knowing is a level of humility that any God would appreciate. I'm also agnostic after being raised Catholic. I'm comfortable letting the mystery be, as they say. I also want to do good in this life, not bc I am worried about an after life, but because I want to live this life well.
Ive lost so much but Freedom is everything!! Like stepping out of prison and looking at the sky and grass under my feet, knowing I can run as far as I want. No fear, No judgement, No peer pressures- Just LOVE
Thank you for being respectful of other people’s beliefs. Many who leave mock, and are disrespectful of beliefs that others still hold dear. Many who remain in the faith have a difficult time having relationships with the ones who leave because of this.
It took so much courage to change your lives for the betterment of your family! I was raised Catholic and really tried but had to leave because of the sins of the church . I sought a religion but can only come up with God is all around us and is a higher power . I see the miracles in the world and know something good is there
I have you same experience and coming from a historic Irish family, so miss the comfort of the traditional practice. Thanks for showing a different way to find a personal relation with agod of good !
@@catherinesullivan641the Missouri synod branch of the Lutheran church has maintained the structure of the Catholic Church while Martin Luther threw out the evil practices being condoned by the Papacy.
This was so respectful. Thank you for waiting to share until you could do so in a kind and respectful way to someone's faith. Loved this! You both are incredible people.
Thank you for sharing your amazing life’s journey with so many people. I so much appreciation and respect for you both. Your honesty, respect and kindness is shown in every broadcast. You are wonderful parents to your children and love for your families. All the Best My Friends.
Thank you both for being so transparent. I left the Mormon church 27 years ago. I lost my whole world, I was ex-communicated.. In my search I had a spiritual awakening. I tried main street churches and I don't feel I belong there either. I'm now at peace with God and my beliefs in Jesus Christ as my personal savior. I really have been loving your videos. 💞💞🙏
@ I still ok believe in the Lord and his Gospel. Even more so now that I’ve read 32 books on the doctrine and church history. I was devastated to know JOSEPH SMITH was a fraud as was the Book of Mormon.
Stop it. You were just a poser in the church and took the first convenient exit from it. Make telling the truth your "faith journey". Thanks for leaving so we didn't have to throw you out.
I have been watching your channel since the beginning. I think I was in the first 1,000 followers. I have never been Mormon but in 2018/2019 transitioned out of more evangelical Christian faith into something a bit like you guys described. When Sam said it’s so nice to have a conversation with someone without an agenda I felt that so deeply. I went to a Christian university specifically to study youth ministry and theology, I was a missionary for 5 years (in a way sort of similar to Mormon missions but slightly different), and I was serving in a Christian organization when everything kind of fell apart for me. During all that time, it seemed like I always had an agenda when talking to people. My deconstruction was a hard and dark time, but the other side of it has truly been so much better for me. I’m so much happier and I’m so glad you are too. Can’t wait to keep watching your channel!!!
I was waiting all week for this episode. I’ve been Agnostic (culturally catholic) most of my life and I was shocked when you guys made your big reveal. Welcome to the “I don’t know what I don’t know” club. 😂❤
I love you guys so much, and I'm so proud of you for being the BEST Mormons you could be when you believed in the church, and for being the BEST parents that you could be by leaving the church. Thank you for showing the world that you can be a GOOD person, AND a good Mormon (insert religion of your choosing here), as well as a GOOD person and no longer a Mormon.
I love your authenticity, your love and respect those who don’t believe like you do. In my 60+ years, I’ve gone to and studied almost every church that believes in Jesus in one way or another. While I go to a church now, I call myself a follower of Jesus and have realized that churches are filled with imperfect humans who need the love and compassion of a perfect Savior, Jesus. Jesus is truly my best friend as I’ve found deep intimacy with Him. I can see you both are seekers of truth and know you will find the sweet center of Jesus deep love one day. He is not a religion He is a relationship.
No one could ever accuse me of being a traditional Christian. My late husband was a Native American Shaman. I feel that God has made us in his image, so all of us are worthy of love and acceptance. Great video!❤❤
Thank you for sharing your testimony. Praying God’s blessings and favor over you both, your family and your faith journey. 🙏 It’s not about religion, but relationship. The Lord loves each of us more than we will ever understand. You both are precious and have a mighty purpose. You are already being used mightily. The love and care for people no matter their beliefs is huge!👏👏👏 You are amazing! To God all the glory! 🙌
Loved this video. I started my faith transition at the age of 11 or 12 when my mother gave me a book about the different religions in the world. I was stunned, in the same way that Sam was, that people believed they were right, even though they came from different faiths.
I also started to deconstruct around that age for similar reasons. I had the realization as a kid that people mostly stay as whatever religion they’re born into. If I had been born into a Jewish family, I would be Jewish; if I was born to a Muslim family, I would be Muslim, etc. I couldn’t believe that a loving, forgiving God would condemn people of other religions just for holding different, but no less sincere, beliefs than Christians have.
Thank you both for sharing so authentically and honestly about your journey so far! ❤ I really appreciate what you said about still being in the process. My dad has always said to "allow time for the process." So many people try to rush others and control their own process or others' process - and that is incredibly harmful. As you guys pointed out, it is SO important to respect our fellow human beings and their free will and not to operate to control or coerce their free will to conform to a specific religious belief. We get to choose. ❤
This was an amazing story to share! I love how open, honest, and vulnerable you both are! I can't imagine how hard and scary this journey has been for both of you! Thank you for sharing ❤
This was such a great series. Thank you both for being so open and honest about your journey and experiences. As you continue working through things, I encourage you to consider and look into the differences between the word religion, church, spirituality and faith. I feel like we as humans have mucked it all up and made things way more complicated than God ever intended for things to be. Sending love & encouragement to you both. 💕
I really appreciate how careful and respectful you both were when choosing your words and sharing your story. It’s obvious that you went out of your way to protect people’s feelings. Well done!
This was such an enlightening video. I love how honest and forthright you guys are with your opinions, and I love how you flesh out what your thought process was in your intentions in the moment. I left a very high demand religion, not any type of Mormonism , but extremely high demand and I just relate to your story on such a deep level. I ended up leaving my religion because I was trying to dig deeper and understand and grow my faith. I feel like it’s such a common story among people who’ve lost their faith. of those I’ve spoken to I would estimate eight out of 10 of them ended up, stepping away from religion, even though there intention was to grow within it. You guys are so brave for putting this out there and I hope that your common section does get you down. People of faith can be aggressive in their defensive of that faith, but this video was so respectful. Keep standing by your own beliefs and trusting your hearts. You guys have done a pretty amazing job managing this life so far.
Getting sober at age 22 brought me back to a loving God. Thankful for the 12 Step Program that helped me figure it out. I have attended several Christian churches since. I am so enjoying your podcasts. Thank you.
@@GrowingUpinPolygamy thank you so much for today’s video. The respect you still show is so appreciated because it’s how I am. I do have a question if you have any tips. I enjoy meeting with the missionaries who visit with me, even becoming family more than friends. I’m finding the chat about becoming a member of the LDS church, that’s it not for me as well as my family hard to begin. They are aware of my doubts and concerns about the history of the church too. But starting that conversation about not wanting baptism is going to be hard to start. Please don’t feel expected to have the right answer because I don’t think there is one, I’d just appreciate your thoughts because I admire and respect you both so much. Xo
Thank you for being such a strong couple and truly sharing from your hearts. It did my heart good to hear you speak your truth and journey in such an open authentic way. Keep going. Sending love and blessings to you and yours this holiday season.
So proud of you both. Your viewers, children, family and friends are lucky to have your loving presence. Your show brings me peace (as well as entertainment) knowing there are others out there that believe in kindness and respect still.
Thank you for being so vulnerable in this video. People naturally want to know where you are today spiritually speaking because of the nature of your channel. It isn’t a surprise that you get tons of questions about it. That doesn’t make it easier on you guys though! Lol! You did a great job in this video. Hugs!
Thank you so much for opening up and being very raw/emotional about your story. I cannot imagine the emotional roller coaster that you both went through questioning your faith. 🙏 I’m am happy that you were both able to support each other and figure out what was best for your family. ❤
The thoughts, questions, analysis of the difference in Joseph Smith’s teachings and modern teachings, basically the whole process you went through together is inspiring in and of itself. Thank you for sharing such a personal and challenging journey that you both went through. I’m really touched that you supported each other’s journey without the expectation that you would come to the same conclusions, but, your love for each other would remain the same or even get stronger. Sam you said it perfectly when you said that you knew you did not want to go through life without Melissa🥰. So much respect for both of you.
I grew up in worldwide church of God. Another high demand religion. I left 20 years ago at 43 years old. I cried listening to this video. You spoke to my heart. You are wonderful young parents and an amazing couple. I'm so proud for you both. ❤❤❤
I've been so looking forward to this video! As someone who has gone through/going through similar hardships deconstructing my religion, I really value hearing your experiences. It's easy to feel alone on this journey, but hearing your honest thoughts helps me know that I'm absolutely not alone in this. Thank you!
I have been watching your channel for quite some time now. Your leaving, makes sense on so many levels. I actually am planning on serving at the Dream Center in Short Creek this summer! I wish you both so much success.
I’m not Mormon I was brought up Baptist. Now I don’t go to church very often. I believe in God and I feel like he’s everywhere. I talk to him all the time. I thank him for everything in my life and everything in the world. He made such a beautiful world and I love living in it and seeing everything I can. I had an experience when I was 14 and I felt God touch me and I will always believe in him. I believe he knows and sees everything.🙏🏼❤️
@ I have been brought up thinking that God is male but God could be a superior being/spirt. I do think God is an all encompassing force that deals with each person individually.
@@juliearnold5832amen, God bless you & continue to give you the strength to tell everyone how you were raised & how you believe that God sent his only son to die for our sins all we have to do is ask for forgiveness, accept him in our hearts & follow him as our savior. God Bless you all! 💕🙏🏼
@@piperarcher9706 He is always referred to as He, and as Father. He is an exalted man. From the very beginning of the Bible, Genesis all the way to Revelation, God refers to Himself as male. There are approximately 170 references to God, as the “father.” If God had chosen to reveal Himself in female form, then He would have chosen “mother.” Jesus also referred to God as His father.
All religions are the same. They start with somebody making up stories, claiming they are the 1 true religion. There are hundreds of different religions out there. What makes you think your god is the only one? Religion is like a plague. You all seem to think you are the only religion when in reality, it's all BS. Live your life like you have 1 life. You shouldn't be moral just because there is a threat of hell.
You guys are amazing. Thank you for sharing your stories! I will always hang my hat on the person of Jesus. That he is the way the truth and the life but the expression of that looks very different. Thats always a core for me. Praying for you both - peace and joy over your home this Holiday season!! ☺️
I am always happy to hear your story and thoroughly enjoyed this third installment. Not only do you show that people can change their minds and still live a good life, you also show what it's like to be in a loving and supportive relationship. Great job 💜
hi i just discovered your channel today and find a lot of comfort in your podcast-style with so much documentation to dive into. I was raised catholic and my mom left the church with me when i was about 10 yrs old, hearing your stories gives me a lot of insight in that overwhelm of feelings and change we went through similarly. I also am a survivor of family struggles and i was kidnapped for a week that is how I can't imagine how difficult it is for young people going through displacements and rejection of family like whats been going on recent years. Beautifully faith and religion is still a great inspiration in many ways. Greetings and love from Switzerland
This video really resonated with me. I am nearly 70 and still trying to figure out what I truly believe and whether there is a religion that aligns with that. (Right now the Bahai faith intrigues me, but my information about it is very limited.) I‘ve always felt that, when I have to give an account of my life, it won’t be enough to say that I was observant of religious teachings if I didn’t fully believe them. I appreciate the openness and understanding that both of you bring to your own and other’s spiritual journeys. I have enjoyed your videos very much!
I grew up Christian and find the more I live life, I'm around your age, the more unitarian I am. I am also really enjoying the freedom of not worrying about other people's beliefs. I feel like im much more able to embody Christian love by giving up on the belief that I truly know anything.
Thank you for sharing your stories! I’ve been deconstructing for months now and finding these stories on RUclips has lightened my heavy heart. It has been quite the journey!
Late to the replay, but you both were so respectful throughout this video. My Mom always told me to follow my own path. I took a similar journey that both of you did and found something that gives me peace. I still don’t have all the answers (I don’t believe anyone does) so I’m still open to finding more. Thank you so much for the video, I think your openness will help many.
❤❤❤❤ Agree- I was a Roman Catholic and even when my sons were finishing their religious education and becoming confirmed I never went up for communion. I felt is was disrespectful. So many people go through the motions and for me that was a no. I wanted my sons to have their own spiritual journey and wanted them to have the confirmation in case they ever wanted to marry in the Catholic Church. When I left the Catholic Church, I didn’t just leave. I wrote a letter of resignation, and I brought it to the parish and discussed it with my parish priest. I love the respect you have for all people whatever their beliefs are. We are spiritual beings having a human experience and to be good to one another is our highest calling ❤
I became a RC by choice after desiring to do this form many years. After many years of deep faith and behavior I realized that I am really Atheist and can't pretend I'm not. My parish priest told me to "Fake it until you make it." and I just can't do that. At 90, I'm a happy individual who is searching for knowledge which doesn't fit into any religious faith.
I too left at the point the church encouraged political support of a very flawed candidate and bishops were refusing communion based on politics. I also write my bishop and removed my name from any mailing lists. I have had to find a universal god of good not tied to ritualized practice. Thanks for sharing your journey!
I am not sure our faith journey ever really ends. I think we keep learning and growing and understanding more and more as we walk through life. God is so BIG and putting him in a box of one religion that knows it all would be impossible
I have been listening to your RUclips podcast for a few years ! I just want to commend you for how you tell your story. Never are you disrespectful in any side and that is a breath of fresh air in this day and time !! You teaching your children this attribute will make this world a better place ! God bless. Thank you for sharing your stories !
This is my favourite video on the internet ever. I have never been Mormon, but left a mainstream Christian church in Scotland 6 years ago. It was a very long journey, and no one thing caused my doubts, but an accumulation of things. It devastated me and I ultimately had a breakdown because I didn't know how to navigate life without Jesus. I still instinctively want to pray sometimes, and just address my concerns to the universe in general rather than one specific god! I agree with so much that you both said so eloquently. I think I'm a bit further along in my journey, and think that it is more likely that there isn't any god or superior being, so I've concuded I'm an agnostic atheist, since one can neither prove the existence or lack thereof of a god. We can be good, kind, decent people without needing a set of rules written by other humans. I've followed your journey from the beginning of your social media presence, and you have helped me more than you will ever know. I love the fact that you don't want to preach or be preached at, yet absolutely accept that many people are living good lives within their own religion. Respecting what others believe is so important. You are inspirational, and still come across as humble. Thank you. Xxxxx
I really love you guys. Thanks for sharing your honest story! I left my Dutch protestant church in the Netherlands when I was 20 while my whole family was still in there. I recognise a lot of the pressure and the guilt that was put upon me. I believe that all your experiences made you who you are. With your open mind, you are a great inspiration to others to become who they are without being pressured to conform to mainstream believes. I now consider myself to be a spiritual person, still growing to live my greatest potential ❤❤
❤ this absolutely the reason I love your channel so much the respect and love you guys show it not seen to much unfortunately. So keep up the great work you guys do thank you for sharing this ❤❤❤
This was such an interesting series! Thank you for sharing your journeys with us. It takes so much courage and critical thought to be able to leave a high demand religion. So happy everything is working out for the two of you, your children are incredibly blessed to have such intelligent and kind parents.
@@clpotis If one truly desires to have a relationship with another, they don't avoid that person, but instead would introduce themselves ESPECIALLY if the other person was genuinely searching for them. The Bible is contradictory as it does say that ANYONE who seeks god will find god, yet it also says in Romans 9 that “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy...Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. This verse basically says that it's not up to me to find god, but up to god for me to be found. Kind of a d!ck move if you ask me!
People can gaslight themselves to believe anything. Why do you think ancient Greeks believes in what we call now myths? Seek Zeus and you'll find him, it's the same.
I started watching you through Sister Wives. I found this video very compelling .Thank you for your transparency and vulnerability. I applaud your courage, process, and compassion.

So honored that you chose to share your stories so vulnerably with us. I’ve deconstructed from a pretty mainstream Catholic/ Christian faith and it’s such a gift to be able to hear and relate to your stories, despite a difference in our circumstances.
It's great to hear about your journey together. I'm so glad you managed to take the journey together. I left the religion about 10 years ago, and like you two, I really don't know if there is a higher power. However, I think that once humans make a religion, it all becomes controlling, according to one or two people who put themselves at the top of said religion. perhaps there is a god, and perhaps not, but if there is, he/she hasn't let us know they exist, so perhaps we are better off just treating ourselves and others with love and kindness.
What a blessing that you could navigate all of your questions with unconditional love for each other! ❤ I loved Sam’s description that you were still the Sam and Melissa book but sometimes on different pages.
@blimeyhermione07 I agree

Thank you so much! ❤️
Yeah...me too. My grandmother was the last one to leave the church (from the beginning her family were in it). I am really glad I was not raised LDS. But many of the good parts of her upbringing, she passed along.
The way Sam waited while you composed yourself - everyone should be that patient, respectful and kind. Thank you both for sharing your truth(s).
I am the luckiest - Melissa
The church changing what goes on in the temple (Took out my endowments & married in 1970), has much to do with my leaving the church.
Your children are so lucky to have you two as parents. So thoughtful, respectful and down-to-earth.
Sorry but their children will probably be very confused without a community of faith.
Jesus said he was the way the truth and the life he also said you must be born again. God brought you out of the false doctrine of the Mormon church to bring you into a real relationship Jesus Christ.
Maybe they sold their souls for money and internet fame. You can buy anything for money! Then the world will love you.

@@aim-to-misbehave5674 I see you browncoat :D
When you say 'western', I assume you mean American. The USA is way more religious than most western European countries.
I'm from a western European country and I was also raised more or less without any relion. Most christians there (except for a small minority) are cultural christians, nit necessarily religious.
The USA is much more religious than Canada, as well.
They definitely would not be able to get into doctrine or scripture or church policy to the extent that most of these ex Mormon's are capable of.
you are so respectful of each other's journey along with other people's journey.
Thank you for saying this! It has always been our intention. ❤️
It's really incredible that you, as a couple, were able to reach the same conclusions at the same time. I don't think that's terribly common. It's a testament to the open communication, intimacy and trust between the two of you. Really impressive.
Thank you! ❤️
I think it’s the Holy Spirit leading you to the truth.
Congratulations on tackling such a tough subject with respect, sensitivity, and honesty. You did an amazing job of sharing your journey while not judging or condemning others for their journey. You both have beautiful hearts and spirits. I was blessed today; thank you.
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
You didn't.
That is sooooo "well said". Perfect, and applies to many things in life.
You are definitely not alone ❤️
Get involved in a Bible teaching non denominational evangelical church! The UMC has become too liberal and strayed from Scripture and Christ)s Gospel.
It takes much more intelligence to ask questions than to do the same thing the whole life without asking! You're so great guys! Your children will thank you one day!❤

LOVING this series. Thank you for choosing to do this.
You're Welcome! Thank you for being here ❤️
You two are so sweet and demonstrate real love. I love that your commitment to each other came first
Thank you guys for sharing so openly, honestly and meticulously.
I agree with you 🙏
Very excellently expressed.
Thank you so much!
Short answer… studying its history and certain local leaders. It’s a complicated process for us. But your parents will have to do it on their own.
Thank you

I am im the process of leaving. Also 47. Member my whole life.
Can I ask what was your faith crisis like?

My husband came to me over a year ago telling me he no longer believed and gave me the option to leave our marriage if that’s what I needed for myself.

There have definitely been a lot of changes since President Nelson became prophet that had us feeling the same way.
Hebrews 1:1-2 says that God no longer speaks through prophets and he now speaks through His Son Jesus Christ. So the whole Mormon Theology of prophets and revelators who can change the Word of God is just made up.

I've been hoping for this video for a while.

Yes for all of Us A Little Grace, Compassion and leave out the assumptions .. Great Talk with so much respect as always...
Thank you! ❤️
I'm a Utah resident, and a nevermo. Im super proud of you both for seeking your own truth, you are setting a great example for your young ones.
Thank you for sharing your story, I'm sure it was difficult for you, but you've helped a number of people.
I just want to say how impressed I am with your courage & honesty. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your testimony. Praying God’s blessings and favor over you both, your family and your faith journey. 🙏 It’s not about religion, but relationship. The Lord loves each of us more than we will ever understand. You both are precious and have a mighty purpose. You are already being used mightily. The love and care for people no matter their beliefs is huge!👏👏👏
You are amazing!
I left the church a few years ago, I also think it’s been the best decision. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Loved the honesty. It’s good to question everything and to follow your instincts, just in general. Do what’s right for you and your family ❤
First time listener-This is so deep! Oh my Heavenly Father this is so DEEP! I’m going to start from the beginning to follow your story.
You have shown so much generosity of spirit in this conversation, so respectful!!
Thank you!! 😊❤️
I appreciate this thoughtful and honest conversation. Perfect example of the power of long form content on RUclips. You are good people.
Thank you so much!
Getting sober at age 22 brought me back to a loving God. Thankful for the 12 Step Program that helped me figure it out. I have attended several Christian churches since. I am so enjoying your podcasts. Thank you.
Thank you for this thoughtful, honest episode about how you both navigated your faith transition together. Our hats are off to you!
Yay I’ve been waiting for this video…. Questions I’ve always had, being answered 😊💜 hello Sam and Meilssa from Australia xo
Hi Melissa! ❤️
I've always felt that religions were there to separate us.. love and kindness to all
... Love to you both and your children...
So proud of you both. Your viewers, children, family and friends are lucky to have your loving presence. Your show brings me peace (as well as entertainment) knowing there are others out there that believe in kindness and respect still.
I love this video! It seems like you all are kind and ethical individuals who are open to new ideas and want to raise kids with those same values. ❤
Thank you for being so vulnerable in this video. People naturally want to know where you are today spiritually speaking because of the nature of your channel. It isn’t a surprise that you get tons of questions about it. That doesn’t make it easier on you guys though! Lol! You did a great job in this video. Hugs!
Beautiful story that will help so many people! Thank you for sharing yourselves with us.
Thank you so much
I grew up in worldwide church of God.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this! We hope you the very best in your journey.❤️😊
Just curious... do you feel that God is a Man/Male or actually has a gender?
@ I have been brought up thinking that God is male but God could be a superior being/spirt. I do think God is an all encompassing force that deals with each person individually.
@@juliearnold5832amen, God bless you & continue to give you the strength to tell everyone how you were raised & how you believe that God sent his only son to die for our sins all we have to do is ask for forgiveness, accept him in our hearts & follow him as our savior. God Bless you all! 💕🙏🏼

He is always referred to as He, and as Father.
Great job 💜
Aww thank you so much ❤️
hi i just discovered your channel today and find a lot of comfort in your podcast-style with so much documentation to dive into.
An amazing journey. I applaud your willingness to be so vulnerable and open. Deconstructing any belief system is a shock to the system.
Yes, or that it's your responsibility to save everyone around you.
If you are leaning towards monotheism, check out Islam
Unitarian Universalists are probably my pick as well.. they meet you wherever you are and that's great!
@@kkaye76they do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as the son of God. They lack an understanding of the holy trinity.

Thank you for sharing your stories! I’ve been deconstructing for months now and finding these stories on RUclips has lightened my heavy heart. It has been quite the journey!
An old indigenous lady told me all paths lead to the center. Your path is yours and no one else's.
This is the answer
@ aww good for you 💕💕 😘
I too left at the point the church encouraged political support of a very flawed candidate and bishops were refusing communion based on politics. I also write my bishop and removed my name from any mailing lists. I have had to find a universal god of good not tied to ritualized practice. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Well said
Fantastic episode! My husband and I watched it together. Your story means so much. Love to you both!
Aww thank you so much! ❤️
Thank you so much!
Thank you. Xxxxx
Wow! Thank you so so much! Your words and story mean so much to us! ❤️❤️
Thank you for your honesty and sincerity. We're all here to learn, grow, and increase in love. I hope to continue to grow with you.
What a beautiful couple, your children are lovely to have you and to grow up full of love❤
Love you both so much! Thank you for being so open and honest.
❤ this absolutely the reason I love your channel so much the respect and love you guys show it not seen to much unfortunately. So keep up the great work you guys do thank you for sharing this ❤❤❤
Thank you! ❤️
This was such an interesting series! Thank you for sharing your journeys with us. It takes so much courage and critical thought to be able to leave a high demand religion. So happy everything is working out for the two of you, your children are incredibly blessed to have such intelligent and kind parents.
The Bible says if you seek him you will find him, so I would just encourage you to keep looking for him. I appreciate how honest you are being.
I honestly sought him for years, and never found him once.
That language is just a tactic to blame people who don’t believe
Maybe you will yet find Him.. I do believe He desires that all people come to Him. John 3:16. Please don’t give up.
Thank you!
I haven't watched yall videos in a while. I am so glad this popped up today. Yall are so beautiful and strong, i appreciate you sharing your storry with us. First saw yall on C2C. i am glad that yall are doing well! ❤hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I have long c@vid and really have been struggling lately being sick and feeling useless all the time. This was very inspirational! ❤
Thank you so much!! We hope you feel better soon
Very well said!
What a blessing that you could navigate all of your questions with unconditional love for each other! ❤ I loved Sam’s description that you were still the Sam and Melissa book but sometimes on different pages.
Been looking forward to this video all week!!
Thank you! It's been a long time coming 😊
