The meaning of the Lotus Sutra is 'I devote my life to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra'.
It is the royal sutra of Nichiren Buddhism in Japan (1253). Coming from India to China and then to Japan, the prayer was translated from the Sanskrit word ‘Saddharma-pundarikasutra » first into classical Chinese as ‘Miao-fa Lien-hua Ching’ and then into an ancient form of Japanese as ‘Myoho Renge Kyo’.
The word 'Nam' derives from the Sanskrit ‘names’ and means ‘devotion’. It is placed before the name of all deities when worshipping them.
‘Myo’ is the name given to the mystic nature of life and ‘Ho’ to its manifestation.
‘Renge’ means lotus flower. The beautiful and undefiled Lotus blooms in a muddy swamp with all the obstacles against it. It symbolizes the emergence of our Buddha nature from the everyday problems and desires of ordinary life. ‘Renge’ stands also for the simultaneity of cause and effect, because the lotus puts forth its flower and seedpod at the same time.
‘Kyo’ literally means sutra, the voice, and the teaching of the Buddha.
It also means sound rhythm or vibration and therefore it might be interpreted to indicate the practice of chanting. Since everything in the universe is connected through sound waves, ‘Kyo » refers to the life activity of universal phenomena and indicates that everything is a manifestation of the Mystic Law.
‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ is the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra. An explanation can help you understand, but the Sutra can only be fully appreciated through chanting it.
TINA: ‘However you must do it, to truly understand. When you say ‘Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ it will slowly remove all of the bad decisions you have ever made. The more you repeat the words the more you make your life clearer. The more you chant it the closer you get to your true nature. Your true nature is the right way of thinking and the right way of acting. The longer you go on this path, the more you avoid making wrong decisions. The Lotus Sutra helps me in my daily life. It is indeed mystical! And my life has proven this!’

I’ve been homeless countless times in my life and was orphaned by my family. When I was a young adult I start to binge drink and went into a spiral of despair. This mantra was what got me through the most difficult moment of my life. I listen to it still as a means of maintenance and care for the healing of a lifetime.

I haven't listened to this mantra long, a week max and it's already doing wonders for me. Believe in yourself and never lose hope. You will get through whatever it is you're dealing with. Do yourself a favor, listen to this as much as you can and sing/chant along and watch what will happen. Magic and the supernatural are real. I have been a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist since I was eighteen. The practice has taken me through some very hard tough times. This is so so important. We cannot create peace on the outside if we are at war within. This meditation is like water to me, it refreshes my mind and soul

I am absolutely stunned at the effectiveness of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would find a simple practice that can totally change ones life. I was cynical at the claims made about this system, as I had tried fundamentalist Christianity, only to be disillusioned, plus therapists, counselling, drugs, alcohol, depression.....Now I am a changed man because of this mantra. I am utterly incredulous.

I'm so glad to have found this beautiful chant/music. I had never known that Tina Turner sang these, and just discovered them surfing youTube. I'm a retired, disabled mostly shut-in. I communicate with the world mostly on Facebook and Twitter, but have been allowing all the negativity, especially politics, to eat away at my peace of spirit. I've begun studying some Eastern teachers in the past few years, and do what yoga my body is capable of.. Since I love to listen to something in the background as I go about my daily life, mostly alone in my small apartment--I have three small pet bunnies as my companions--this is perfect to put on and just let it pour into my being. It doesn't demand to be "listened to" in the way that some music does; it just melts into my heart and gives, if not exactly healing, peace, to my now-damaged body and heart-mind.I have been reading the posts below and hope to communicate through posting myself with those of you who sound like you are farther along the path that I'm just beginning. I have some serious health issues which are fortunately seem to be, with a change of medication and chanting two, three times a improving for the better. The number one benefit from chanting is I am no longer afraid, my anxiety has virtually disappeared which I believe is a major factor in my health improving quite dramatically. Bless you Tina, Bless you Nichiren , Bless you President Ikeda.

I can feel the magic but can't explain.My dad is suffering from blood cancer and so many infections. There is no hope but, after chanting 2days I can feel the magic.plz pray for m dad.🙏 I don't want to loose m hope n m dad.

I have tried this chanting ..
After a few minutes .. I felt a powerful vibration - the visualisation/understanding of the meaning of the words and the picture of a lotus flower it is so beautiful and so pure .. bloomsome in the mud ..
So powerful so calm and so grounded.
This is beautiful and brings me great comfort because a Caucasian chaplain surprisingly knew this chant and since it was the closest to our Thai Buddhist chant we figured would be nice to say over my terminally ill dad. We held hands as she chanted and I felt white warm light surround us and knew dad was in the best hands possible.

Leila Moorhouse At some point we all hear this magic chant and feel some connection to it. I was so surprised when I arrived in Italy 25 years ago and found out that my Italian friends were Buddhist. I could not believe how many people in Italy were chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Out of curiosity I tried and felt immense benefit immediately. I never stopped. For 15 years my daily practice was uninterrupted. What I enjoy the most is that many people were inspired and tried to do the same. What counts is the amount of benefits that all of us immediately experience while chanting for the first time. When you have any fear at all, these words empower you and intimidate all your fears away.

I am so very glad to see this very different side of yourself and really like how you have blended and drawn on more than one spiritual practice. 8 March was my birthday. I had an awful week so I spent time watching comedy till it wasn't funny anymore - American politics is the only subject lately. It just fed my depression more Found this and felt more hopeful than I have for a long while. A reminder that the Creator is creating still. Signs of Spring everywhere. I have been given the chant card on numerous chance interactions. I used to go to chanting/meetings back in the 80's with my now wife. I always held back on joining because no one would explain the chant. They felt I should accept it as it is or I was told it couldn't be translated. Told to chant for material things - a car as many did. I deeply appreciate the explanations presented here. I needed to feed my soul more than ask for material things. I also love the images from other faiths and in the singing. Quite often in free society where we can choose our worship some folks are pitting faiths or putting one down over the other. I love all faiths even when they contradict as long as the messages are good. I believe many things but, I have always been drawn to Buddhism as a philosophy. Maybe it can be more at this time in my life. This chant has been a gift. Thanks and Blessings to all.Black Feather.

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo could be described as a vow, an expression of determination, to embrace and manifest our Buddha nature. It is a pledge to oneself to never yield to difficulties and to win over one’s suffering. At the same time, it is a vow to help others reveal this law in their own lives and achieve happiness.
Nam comes from the Sanskrit namas, meaning to devote or dedicate oneself.
Myo can be translated as mystic or wonderful, and ho means law. This law is called mystic because it is difficult to comprehend. What exactly makes it difficult to comprehend? It is the wonder of ordinary people, beset by delusion and suffering, awakening to the fundamental law in their own lives and realizing that they are inherently Buddhas able to solve their own problems and those of others.
Renge means lotus blossom. The lotus flower is pure and fragrant, unsullied by the muddy water in which it grows. Similarly, the beauty and dignity of our humanity is brought forth amidst the sufferings of daily reality.
Further, unlike other plants, the lotus puts forth flowers and fruit at the same time. This illustrates the principle of the simultaneity of cause and effect; we do not have to wait to become someone perfect in the future, we can bring forth the power of the Mystic Law from within our lives at any time.
Kyo literally means sutra and here indicates the Mystic Law likened to a lotus flower, the fundamental law that permeates life and the universe, the eternal truth.
To chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is an act of faith in the Mystic Law and in the magnitude of life’s inherent possibilities. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is not a mystical phrase that brings forth supernatural power, nor is it an entity transcending ourselves that we rely upon. It is the principle
that those who live normal lives and make consistent efforts will duly triumph.
