Investigating White Slavery

  • 29/06/2007 - Don Jordan and Mike Walsh talk about investigating the forgotten story of thousands of white Britons who lived and died in bondage in Britain's American Colonies.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries hundreds of thousands of people became slaves, in all but name, in the American colonies. Urchins were collected from London's streets to work in the tobacco fields, and brothels were raided to provide 'breeders' for Virginia.
Migrants, hopeful of finding a new, better life, would be duped into signing as servants. Not until they arrived did they become aware of the awful truth, that they could be bought, gambled away, and sold -- paraded for sale like livestock.
Don Jordan and Michael Walsh, authors of White Cargo: The Forgotten History of Britain's White Slaves in America, investigate this forgotten episode in the annals of slavery, intricately piecing together history drawn from letters, diaries and court and government archives.
Don Jordan is a television producer and director who has worked on dozens of documentaries and dramas. He also co-produced and co-wrote Love is the Devil, a film about the life of Francis Bacon.
Michael Walsh spent 12 years as a reporter and presenter on World in Action, and has won six awards for his work. He is now a producer, specialising in political and historical documentaries.
The event is organised in association with the Centre for Investigative Journalism.

We , in that case are paying ourselves reparations right? Every one pays taxes. Even people who make money illegally pay taxes when they buy merchandise from stores or gasoline. I am a "mature senior citizen" in NW GA. and my 3rd Grade History Book had an entire chapter on Scot/Irish/British Slaves bought to North America in chains from the 1500's until the 1920's. Many in my class were descendants of these slaves who were still digging potatoes, picking cotton, working fields in total servitude until the 1920's in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. These were not indentured servants but SLAVES.

I didn’t like that these guys sort of try to blame slavery on America. Slavery is ancient and worldwide, and slavery involved slaves of all ethnic backgrounds and colors, and slaveowners of all ethnic backgrounds and colors. I learned that peasants from Ireland left to slave away in American colonies as indentured servants, and their experience was not different from African slaves. Starting from their transportation on a ship to American colonies, which was a cruel, inhumane way to transport humans. When they arrived to America, they were lined up and sold separately. Even the little children were sold, and the children were forced to work until they were 21. Why did they willingly sign up for indentured servitude? It’s because the conditions in their native land were so horrible, that they had no other choice but to go into indentured servitude. They were deliberately driven from their land with very high taxes on their land. They couldn’t afford to stay on their farms. They became poor beggars on the streets along with their children. There was also suspicious famines taking place in Europe and other places. Not everyone willingly signed up for it. Poor whites country folk were snatched and sold into slavery from Britain and other parts of Europe. Another topic to explore is the hidden truth about Russian serfdom. I’m from Russia and I know that even in Russia people are not taught the truth about the horrific reality of Russian serfs. It was pure slavery. And I don’t agree with the guy towards the end who says that African slaves got worse punishment than white slaves. That’s not true. And the lady that took the microphone at the end saying that there is a consciousness within US academia about the white slavery is not true. This topic is hidden and avoided. Kids only learn about African slavery in schools. The slave trade already existed in Africa long before the Europeans took advantage of it

We are divided by class, as we were then and still are now. It's always been class. No matter the color of the class doing it. The turmoil of race against race is the mechanism that's used to keep us divided. So we don't see who's really pulling the strings. As long as we blame each other, we will never bond together, to deal with the real problem. If we all take a step back and really analyze how ignorant, it is to judge ones pigment. Something he or she does not have any control over when coming into this world. Then you'll see how futile and brainwashed we truly are.

Black Cherokee the sad part is all the black commenters trying to squash what should ultimately be something that ties people together to understand the politics of control...the more people that are exposed to hidden histories that are mainly passed down through oral tradition, the more everyone will take it down a notch...some white people need to know the truth about themselves and realise they aren't as high and mighty as they've been made out to be, and some black people need to know the same, as well as the fact that everyone today benefits from all the slavery that took place then, and NOW. LEARN FROM THE PAST, PEOPLE. stop lining up on racial terms. like cherokee said here..it's a class thing and always was. that means it's not whitey. it's the man. the man treats everyone the same, and you can never put your finger on him. that's just one of the lessons offered by this video.

Keep dividing and whining. Who sold their own people in Africa to slave traders? This is a class war turned into a race war. The upper African class sold its "lower" African class as slaves. Same with MOST whites who were servants, chattel or slaves.

Many, many accounts of the antebellum Democrat party tricking Irish immigrants into voting against emancipation and for anti-slavery politicians. In newspapers and pamphlets, they used to draw Irish people to look like apes - similar to how Black people were depicted - sourced and reprinted from old newspapers. Slavery in the US was certainly based on color. This is why legislation was introduced specifically for certain people to be enslaved. White People in general were never slaves in the US . The legal slavery of American Indians ended in 1720 and the enslavement of African descendants ended in the US in 1865. The enslavement of African descendants on Indian reservation ended in1866

Man the Civil War was over slavery. The wealthy controlled the political landscape then as they do now. Some slave owners were not particularly wealthy. Thatpart is a myth. If you could afford other livestock , you could afford slaves. They too were treated as animals. Who was the white man that wrote of his life as a slave? It wasn't illegal for a white man to learn to read . I am sure some Indentured Servants could read and write. Frederick Douglass, Phyllis Wealthy, Sojourner Truth, George Washington Carver were all black and learn to read and write when it was illegal to teach a black person to read , They wrote about their plight. I am sure that you have heard of the 40 slave castles on the West Coast of Africa that was built by slave labor, those people were not purchased, those people were simply subjugated and forced into slavery. I am sure that you have studied the Ngongdo tribe in what is now Angola. In 1612 the leaders of the tribe were killed by the Governor from Portugal and their new subjects were forced to pay taxes with slaves. These people were not bought, they were forced to capture slaves by their European masters

No If you read comments you see that I say that The Indentured service was at times as terrible as chattel slavery and some of the people probably died from their treatment. What I am trying to do is have people to know that White People weren't slaves in the US. Slavery was a different circumstance. It was a legal practice and the residuals of it today are evident. You couldn't avoid it even if you tried. Indentured servitude usually ended for the individual. The evidence of that is the white working class today. Marxism most likely is where it came into play as a cultural weapon. After the failure of economic Marxism came along as they say in any depiction of the Frankfort School, and their phrase "Critical Theory", which is cultural Marxism with a new name. Just as most of this kind of negative cultural pressure and word play, it was used to make it seem as if it is something scientific, or more philosophical.
Slavery itself created more racial hatred certainly in the U.S. where it evolved into Jim Crow laws and segregation. The groundwork of that was laid in the times where both blacks and whites were enslaved, but to keep us all in segregated groups through race slaves were assigned a class. While whites were still slaves they were labeled to be above the black slaves so as you can imagine it fueled tensions, resentment, and superiority/inferiority based on race due to the deliberate classification in cultural sense of races not being equal even when both were subjugated.
Cultural Marxism just looks at everything as if it has no absolute truth, and it allows every idea to be manipulated to the benefit of the one pushing it. Every system, class of wealth, etc. can be put into a hierarchy in which they can be used against one another to create a weaker overall population.
Mix in a bit of language and word play, it can be used as deception to hide real motives. Adopted by nearly all powers to try and fool the citizens into believing that a great evil appears good. In other words, propaganda. How a good can be twisted to a negative.
We see this kind of language bait and switch constantly in the current social justice/woke movement, which use the same tactics as cultural Marxism. We also see it, however in public officials trying to violate our rights and limit our freedom as well just by how they name legislation. For instance, "The Patriot Act", or "the Green New Deal". Neither are honest titles for the kinds of propositions inside, but if they are pushed to a low information and low critical reasoning population they can slide on by without opposition. With a coordinated media the lie can be spread through repetition. Through educational institutions the inability to critically think can be seeded.
Everyone with the same agenda, repeating the same words over and over can train most people to believe it. Especially when they are still convinced that those giving the message are some sort of authority on the matter. That's why they focused on voices of influence. Celebrities, teachers, media, etc. Putting a stranglehold on the ideological message by becoming the super majority in those fields that inform and teach the public.

The crimes for which they were arrested and deported are interesting, people should read Britain's poor law's which were still really in effect when I was Born in 1955. The Workhouses were still there complete with residents, the soup Kitchen's and certainly the attitudes. At my school we got all the bitter, couldn't make it at their own middle class institutions, as a result we had to deal with these angry, embittered people who had the power of God over us. They certainly wasn't their to teach us anything other than our place in life, and they beat it into me from the day it was legal to cane me. Onto st Bernardo's who were still sending children to Canada into the 70's and had just closed the Canadian receiving house when I moved here in the late 70's in Picton, Ontario.
The whole Town of Westport, Ontario is populated by the descendants of Irish immigrants who were left on the ice flows to die. My own family from Sutherland Shire, were shipped to Canada after the Duke Burned down all of the croft's in which they lived. With all the timber stripped from Scotland centuries before, they couldn't rebuild with no access to timber to form the roof, that was in the 1840's, lot of Scottish descendancy Ontarians arrived here under those circumstances.
Lets deal with vagrancy and begging in Britain, Both crimes that got you deported. If you didn't want to lose your limbs or life in the Factories or mines of Georgian and Victorian England, you could run from you're village without permission, if you were caught you were charge with Vagrancy and shipped, same with begging you couldn't feed yourself as all animals belonged to his lordship so if you killed and ate one of those you were a poacher, if you begged you were arrested and transported. All the big land owners in the USA and Canada were second or third sons, who had commision purchased for them by their families to give them a chance. On leaving the Army or Navy as a Officer you received a large Land grant, 100's of Acre's, just look at the land registry's of the time.
If there was ever one example of the injustice, in the British system, just look no further than the Tolpuddle Martyr's. I would love to see a true expose'e of just when these practices were really stopped, as I know that Dr Barnado's supplied lot's of white kid's who happened to be on the street's do whatever after a certain hour and in the 60's were grabbed and transported to Canada and Australia, as indentured servants, blacks then were only arriving as immigrants. Also the way poor lad's filled the rank's of the British Army and Navy, as they still do to this day, thanks to the lack of opportunity.
Look at the crime which led to the last hanging of a child in the UK in the 1840's if I remember right in Norwich prison, 8 yrs old for stealing Bread as he was starving. Lower class whites are still seen as worse than any other group of people in the UK, and discriminated against accordingly, so glad I don't live there!

The desire to have a white run country. It was a Western European/Roman Empire type thing. Nationalism. The Native Americans had to go and the Africans had to work and be slaves or subservient. There developed a narrative about the inferiority of blacks and the Hamitic curse which made it morally acceptable for the average white Christian to own Africans. As a result, racism functioned to end the conflict between Christianity and the necessary brutality of the industrial chattel slaves system used to satisfy world wide demand for certain products. The estimates range in the tens of millions of Africans sold into perpetual slavery and the millions lost during the voyage to the Americas. Well, you can't treat human being like that and think you are going to heaven, so then you have to think those enslaved are not really human or deserve to be mistreated. The descendants of African and African slaves still carry a stigma today world wide as a result of the narrative.

Someone had to own him! Secondly, there was a small number of black slave owners. Most who owned slaves, owned family members purchased out of slavery. Because states had a limit on the number of free blacks that could exist in the state, free blacks owned their own relatives who were legally slaves to satisfy state requirements. Yes, Native Americans owned slaves. The vast Atlantic Slave Trade was dominated by Europeans enslaving Africans and considering them less than human as is written in the US Constitution where they are referenced as 3/5 of a person. White slavery was in WWII when men and boys (age 16-40) were taken from the streets and from their homes by means of razzias to go work as slaves in German metal factories, war Indus-tree. They got bad food, some got beaten with (weapon) canes and many died, same with the left behind women and children and elderly, who had no access to food, fuels for heating in the 'hunger winter' of 1944-1945.

No one talks about it because what you're saying is false, They were not treated "worse". Complete hogwash. You don't even understand basic economics or the racial implications of that time to make that comment. Firstly, African slaves were not even considered human, they were property and a commodity, like gold and silver. Saying they cost "more" had nothing to do with their right to be human as it was basic logistics. How about you take a basic trading course to see why importing certain goods would equal a higher buying price, it should be pretty obvious anyway.
Also. the Irish who went were indentured servants, not slaves. Many finished their time and were given land or money for their service, some even had slaves of their own. Also Indentured servants and Chattel slavery is worlds apart even during that time. Were Indentured servants abused? Sure. This was in the past where the concept of human rights as a whole was clearly lacking but they were not abused as much as a slave, and they could sue their masters for poor treatment. Slaves could be killed, r*** and tortured and it wasn't a crime.

I took college history last semester and there's nothing new here. The only difference is they are calling indentured servitude white slavery. Our book mentioned that company which is named here, the indenture of convicts, the kidnap of (some) Europeans to be sold, the poor housing conditions and treatment, brutal punishments/ beatings, the sale of people's indenture, rape of indentured women, etc.
I am glad that people are learning about it though because it's much different than the indentured servitude that we learned in high school. Any form of slavery is disgusting and I'm sure there was a better way to obtain cheap labor. But then again the English elite had a history, pre-Colonies, of treating their help like crap!
And yes, if you study Bacon's Rebellion (and the formation of race as we now know it, he mentions it as the rebellion in the 1600's) it explains that African slaves and indentured servants and other poor whites united and rebelled against the elite, thus ending indentured servitude. They knew they were outnumbered and would be easily overwhelmed. At that point, people who were once know as English, Dutch, etc were told they were white and inherently better and it resulted in the slavery we think of traditionally. Shirts vs skins!

@TOM PREE Your preface of "white people can't be racist" is irrelevant to the rest of what you mentioned. Based on much of those situations, one can only conclude that white people loved oppressing _each other_ up until Bacon's Rebellion (which you seem to have ignored). I don't see what that has to do with it being impossible for a single white person to be racist.
If that's the case, why did the noble elites FEAR poor whites and blacks coming together? Why did they create RACIAL LAWS to categorize whites as superior no matter their class? Laws/Beliefs that surely influenced the way people felt about each other for years to come.
It was these events that LITERALLY transformed the notions of race! Instead of competing for who was oppressed the most (because I don't care, oppression is oppression, all of our ancestors have been through it), why don't we come together LIKE WE ONCE DID to correct their wrongs?
That'll be the day the tide actually changes... but will it ever change? I doubt it.

White slavery (also white slave trade or white slave trafficking) refers to the enslavement of any of the world's European ethnic groups throughout human history, whether perpetrated by non-Europeans or by other Europeans. Slavery in ancient Rome was frequently dependent on a person's socio-economic status and national affiliation, and thus included European slaves. It was also common for European people to be enslaved and traded in the Muslim world; European women, in particular, were highly sought-after to be concubines in the harems of many Muslim rulers. Examples of such slavery conducted in Islamic empires include the Arab slave trade, the Barbary slave trade, and the Black Sea slave trade, among others. It was common for Europeans to be traded alongside Africans, Turks, Iranians, and sometimes other Arabs.
Many different types of white people were enslaved. On the European continent under feudalism, there were various forms of status applying to people (such as serf, bordar, villein, vagabond, and slave) who were indentured or forced to labour without pay.
During the Arab slave trade, Europeans were among those traded by the Arabs.[1] The term Saqaliba (Arabic: صقالبة) was often used in medieval Arabic sources to refer specifically to Slavs being traded by the Arabs, but it could also refer more broadly to Central, Southern, and Eastern Europeans who were also traded by the Arabs, as well as all European slaves in some Muslim-controlled regions like Spain, including those abducted from raids on Spanish Christian kingdoms.[2][3] During the era of the Fatimid Caliphate (909-1171), the majority of slaves were Europeans taken from European coasts and during conflicts.[1] Similarly, the Ottoman slave trade that included European captives was often fueled by raids into European territories or were taken as children in the form of a blood tax from the families of citizens of conquered territories to serve the empire for a variety of functions.[4] In the mid-19th century, the term 'white slavery' was used to describe the Christian slaves that were sold into the Barbary slave trade in North Africa.

Slavery and it's close relative Serfdom were often imposed for economic reasons.
At the beginning of the 17th Century the Scottish parliament was concerned about declining levels of labour in the coal, fishing and salt industries.
So did they try to improve conditions to encourage people into these Industries?
    Er No They didn't!
Instead the Scottish parliament decided to introduce a form of slavery into those industries. It became illegal for people all ready in these Industries to leave their workplaces.
If they did they could be forced back and those who helped them to escape could be prosecuted.
Also if you were the child of someone who was already in these industries then you had no other options. To further increase the labour force it became legal to force anyone who was considered "work shy" or a vagrant into these Industries. Also ship wrecked mariners were considered to be fair game. It would not be until the early years of the 19th Century that these practices would cease.

Bacon's rebellion (1676-1677) was essentially a slave uprising where the European slaves would be reclassified as Whites and the dark-skinned Amerindian servants (possibly some "Africans" with them) would be reclassified as "Blacks"/"Negroes". This system of racism and White Supremacy is essentially one of the longest running systems of affirmative action (for White people) in modern history.
Also ask yourself this question: if, according to the Orthodox narrative, less than 400,000 "Africans" (most of them being men) in total reached North America, and "slave breeding" didn't begin until 1807 (2-3 generations before the outbreak of the Civil War), and the modern population of "Black" America is "officially" at approximately 50 million, *then where oh where did all of these other "Negroes"/"Coloreds"/"Blacks"/"African-Americans" come from?*

The Irish are a strong people who went a different direction in Freedom and created their own Fire Dept, Police, Ran for office, created their own business of service jobs, Nannie’s, farms, they did it all on their own. Eventually it grew into something else, but for at least 50yrs they rejected Government.

White slavery ended in late 1600's.. Indentured slavery ended as well as the planters preferred a permanent slave labor force, i.e. Africans. The whole mess lasted longer and went more in depth with blacks than whites. It was a shame for both. Blacks, however, never had the access to the advantages of white skin. As the 1858, Supreme Court Dred Scott decision put forth "The black man has no rights which the white man is bound to respect." This practice continued well into the 1960's in many parts of the former slave lands of the south. We also see the police killing of black people continues today, usually with impunity.

The Barbary pirates, or Barbary corsairs or Ottoman corsairs, were Muslim pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa, based primarily in the ports of Salé, Rabat, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. This area was known in Europe as the Barbary Coast, in reference to the Berbers. Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean, south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland, but they primarily operated in the western Mediterranean. In addition to seizing merchant ships, they engaged in Razzias, raids on European coastal towns and villages, mainly in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, but also in the British Isles,[1] the Netherlands, and Iceland.

Most of the time person died prior to time severed or time extended by owners for smallest of reasons.. main big one was if slave became pregnant (normally by their master) time extended.. child would than have to work once of age.. oh and the final insult was the slave than had to pay back money to their master for rent food etc upkeep of child so it never really ended..and thanownwrs got 2 for 1 ... but with African slaves term was forever , mater owned child too.. indentured was a only a term used to soften the atrocity to the concerned back home.
