What to Do After High School [College, Trades, and other Options]

  • In today's video, I walk you through the options you have after high school and the financial repercussions of each one. Many high schoolers don't understand the number of possibilities there are for education and career after their graduation!
    Here's what we cover.
    1. Get a 4 year education:
    This is an excellent option. I have a 4 year degree in agricultural engineering and I don't regret getting it at all. The issue with going to college is the cost involved. 4 year colleges and universities are very expensive, sometimes between $25k-$100k.
    A 4 year education can be done well, though. Applying for scholarships and grants is a great first step. Getting a job and working through college along with living at home are equally beneficial.
    But one of the best ways to lower the economic impact of college is by getting prerequisite classes completed at a community college, then attending an in-state public university to finish your degree. Private universities cost a pretty penny to attend unless you're offered an incredible scholarship.

    2. Go to a trade school:
    Trade schools are an incredible value for the price. They are generally 2 year programs and are far cheaper than a traditional college or university. Trades are plumbers, electricians, welders, linemen, and many others. They are high paying jobs as well! Getting into a trade can really put you ahead financially because they allow you to learn a high paying skill in a shorter period of time for less money. Mike Rowe is a big proponent for this career path!

    3. Get an apprenticeship:
    Apprenticeships are generally trades as well. However, they offer the opportunity to get paid for on-the-job training. And the experience builds towards certification in the chosen industry.

    4. Enlist in the military
    Serving our country offers the chance to get a higher education after completing a time of service through the tuition assistance. Also, signing with the ROTC at a major university can get your education fully covered in exchange for a period of time in service to the Army, Navy, or Air Force.

    how about having them join the military? the military in the U.S.will take high school graduates without any experience into the military and after fulfilling your first contract you will gain money for college, buy a house without a downpayment, work experience, discover what you want to do with your life, and priority hiring because you have prior service experience and training. just a thought. i know not everyone can qualify to join the military but those who qualify should seriously consider it and get ahead in life. i`m retired U.S. Navy

      Thanks for the suggestion! I actually had joining the military as the 4th option in my video. I totally agree, it's a great way of getting educated as well as gaining some valuable experience. Thanks so much for your service! I'm a huge fan of the freedom we get to experience because of people like you.

    Great video. Trades are a great way to make money without the crippling debt, not to mention almost 100% job security upon completion. I need to visit the sponsor of this video. I keep saying that i need to install a programmable thermostat.

      Thanks! Yes, that's what I like about them so much. Low cost (relatively speaking) and excellent job security because of the demand.
      So far, it's a great thermostat. I don't even think everyone needs a smart thermostat but even just a normal programmable one can really save you some money.

    Maybe you could make a video of truly all the ways that are available that people can get scholarships? And the possible $$/hr hypothetically speaking if you are able to start getting those scholarships :O

    • @CalebBaleFinance
      @CalebBaleFinance  3 года назад

      Oh, you're saying like what the hourly rate can be hypothetically if you put this much time into applying for scholarships and get this many awarded to you?

    Good stuff. Just a brief comment that it's hard to place a monetary value on doing something you love doing, but it's certainly worth consideration when thinking about each option you present. Specifically, have you researched enough about the option you are considering (or tried it, if possible?) to ascertain how 'happy' you will be with the choice, when all is said and done?

    • @CalebBaleFinance
      @CalebBaleFinance  3 года назад

      Absolutely, I agree. It's just that balance that can be a challenge to find. And happiness is obviously a difficult thing to place any numerical value on.

    What's your plan after high school? Or what path did you take? Did I miss any career and education options?
    Student loans are a huge drain on people's finances. That's why I made this video for the high school students. If you guys understand the options that you have, you'll be better prepared to set yourselves up financially for the future!
