Can we talk about how there’s little to no support for people who decide not to go to college. Especially emotionally. I’m a first generation American and I’ve always been looked down upon for not going. Whenever I’m in a conversation with someone about the future and what they should do I always say look at all your options. You can go to college if you want to, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to, no matter what anyways says. But I always get shut down for that from other people, especially adults. You’re not better than anyone else just because you go/went to college
It's so true. I do think we are moving in the right direction, and people (even employers) are starting to realize that college degrees don't mean a whole lot. But we're still too far off from where we need to be.
Don’t worry buddy I know how it feels but there are better options than college. Yeah college is a nice experience but trust me most of us need a short career to support the poeple who we loved. For me it’s my parents so yeah I did have a great gpa but instead of perusing my dream to college I took a short career as a plumber and well I’m happy when I can afford to take care of my parents. Plus you’ll be surprised most short careers really are not that bad as they seem to tell you.
Yep that's me I'm miserable and am dropping out. My sanity isn't worth this. I had a few people trying to talk me out of it, worried I would get stuck at a dead end job and saying I'd get labelled as a drop out. Since I am now legally a grown person I must fend for myself (it's gonna be an adventure) I have a plan to be able to support myself so by the time I leave I can be on my own (still don't know about my life). I feel alot of pressure from family to go to college ( every one in my family went to college or is going) and a lot of guilt for being stuck in this position in the first place.
The sad truth is that the majority of people (at least in the country where I live) think that no degree equals to failure and shameful. Especially when you have the opportunity to attend college/uni, they would say that anyone who wants to quit is ungrateful and should be ashamed. I am one of those people who want to quit. I received a lot of pushbacks and disapproval from my family who are very academic. Safe to say that I am acquiesced to keep pursuing my degree as I have no options and nowhere else to go. For those who are also struggling to quit college and already have things planned out to survive without a degree. I hope things will work out soon enough for you to pursue whatever it is you aspire to be and to have in life. You got this. You are not your degree. You are what you do. This quote by Steve Jobs is one to live by "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life." 🙏
I think its also generational.Boomers definitely see College as a necessity alot and they alsp happen to come from a time when College WAS more worth it and much cheaper. But times have changed.
Similar. I was so drained into a semester, and felt so out of touch with wasted time and effort. Think I'm gonna pause and actually have a processed plan before continuing.
The fact there is no support for people who don't want to go to college is saddening. I don't wanna go to college because I want to persue the things that I love doing but my parents and teachers have been pressuring and forcing me to go even tho it's not for me. There is also this big weight on shoulder is that if I were to not go to college and instead persue my passions, then my parents would stop supporting me or kick me out. It's really messed up. I don't know what to do to be honest.
I’m 50 /50 in going into college. The first reason is I educated more of my teachers and peers then them ever educating me. All thanks to the internet, many videos, articles, documentaries, and such all covered me, and it was all for free. Secondly the amount of money that’s spend to attend a four year university, you can buy a car, house, or start a business with that money 80k-200k of money. For me, I can pick up a camera, an instrument, or a computer and start making something out of myself. Many of my inspirations in life didn’t go to college or dropout, to mainly pursuit they’re real passions in life or couldn’t afford it.
As a parent who got his Ph.D. I actually really like your message! While I don't regret my education, I think nowadays there are so many more opportunities to expand knowledge in other ways. Skill training, as you mentioned, certifications, mentorship, real-world experiences, etc. Learning doesn't have to come from a formal classroom and as education costs continue to rise, it seems more and more apparent that the ROI from that education isn't getting fulfilled!
as someone who is currently struggling with taking the decision to take a gap year because my 2 years of uni have been utterly bland and boring this video has helped me to organize some ideas on my brain, thank you!
@@dilanlol6046 I ended up not taking a year but 6 months, and it helped mer realize I hated engineering and everything related. I also went to therapy, got diagnosed with the usual stuff and yeah, 6 month later I started graphic design and I couldn't be happier, I'm finally where I was supposed to be. Yeah 1 year can get you off track but maybe that's what you need to change your life. It worked for me at least lol.
GREAT VIDEO GRACE!! Yeah college is a scam for most students. For anyone out there struggling to figure out life, PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP, You are not alone, you are on this earth for a reason. Make sure to be honest with yourself, because LIFE IS TO SHORT TO SETTLE. Here in the 21st century, there are so many other options for figuring out a career. Don't let the opinions and beliefs of other peoples judgments put you down. Everything will be ok.
Well said👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I also think college is a scam. I wish someone would’ve told me this before I decided to go to college. I’m just a simple guy who just wants to get a good job with a good salary and not worry about money. I only care about making money that’s all.
I’m an artist and creative writer. I honestly learned way more about my craft(s) from free online resources than I did during my time as an art major in college. I realized this part way through, so I dropped out before I even had enough credits for an associates degree. Best thing I ever did. I can’t imagine having twice as much (or more) student loan debt than I left with at that point.
I am on a full ride scholarship and sometimes I feel bad and ungrateful because I don't want to be here. But it just doesn't feel fulfilling. Highschool came easy to me which is why I was able to obtain my scholarship. However, I just always knew that I was more than school..
luckily my grades got worst over time cause I was less and less willing to put work into it. Idk if thats lucky or not, but it's a clear signal that "ay, that's not what you want is it? you can do much better and deserve much better". Pay attention to mental and physical symptoms as well, they're always a sign
I started college this year in November and I totally hate it! I swear I wasn't as stressed and frustrated in four years of highschool as I am now with this stupid university.
I'm no girl, but even I agree. I plan to draw and create things for this abstract world. And I learn college isn't the ultimate pathway towards it. Just practice, practice, practice. And have fun
To see the American culture around college as an outsider, where, as you said, people don't ask "do you want to go to college" but " where will you go to college", is crazy. I'd assume it's because US academia is an industry, but it just makes no sense for the "consumer". No everyone should be an academic! People's interests are so varied and it cannot be assumed that academia is one for everyone. It makes me sad how many young people struggle with finding what makes them happy and waste *so much* money on college because it is not seen as deciding to go to college, but deciding not to because college is the default. I love going to university, but that's because I am that type of person! I wish everyone struggling with expectations and decisions the best.
this literally is helping me. I'm a sophomore in High School and i'm the first child ever in my family and they want me to go to college because my parents never went, I put thought into it and I really still don't know what I want to do,, really want to be a singer/performer/songwriter.. but in reality there is no college for that, that I know of. Honestly never liked the thought on having 4 more years of school beside highschool. thank you so much for this video i needed it so much
DO NOT BORROW FOR COLLEGE. Absolutely not. I give you fair warning. The debt isn't worth it. If you can pay cash then it might be ok but if it requires debt, no way. You'll thank me later.
Heydo you can perhaps look for colleges elsewhere in the world. Like I know some specify in arts/professional work... You should really look into it! And often they're less expensive than in the US. Otherwise you're free to wander your own path.
Singer/performer/etc is an arts degree which is something you don't necessarily need to get good at and recognized. Reach out to local teachers - guarantee there are plenty of voice coaches around. Performance? Get involved with local play houses. Even if you don't get chosen at audition, volunteer for stage or production crew to learn everything there is to putting on shows. Art in general? Take local community courses through community centers or the local YMCA if you have one. And then keep practicing at your preferred media and build a portfolio. You do not need college for any of these things.
I don't want to go to college partly because I don't need to do what I want to do. I'm a rider, and the horse doesn't care if I have a degree or not. What matters to them is whether I train well, with empathy. It's also the same with the employers for the jobs I'm looking at. Plus, I don't think there's anything in college I want to learn, and I will not be buried in debt.
For real, easy to just say yeah I'm going to apply again when you have unlimited funds, they'll never understand the struggle of you only have one chance and opportunity and if you mess it up then it's all over and your money is going to a waste of time for the rest of your life
Thank you for this video! I’ve been so stuck trying to figure out if I made the right choice deciding not to go to college and this video really opened my eyes to the different possibilities!
I'm a Filipino, after I graduated in highschool I was confused what to choose best course in college, while my plan is to work in a call center industry, knowing that call center industry doesn't need a degree I push myself to improve my communication skill, well my next plan is to save money and do business.
Girl you just changed my life .I am a high school stud in South Africa and I've always wanted to be a technologist .College in S.A is viewed as the only key to success but you have just made me realize that starting a tech startup and working on my skills might be a better option than trading in 4 years of my life and digging myself into debt.
Currently I am writing my 10th grade speech on this exact topic! This year, 44.1% of college graduates are working in jobs that do not require such education. On top of this, the University of Chicago is expected to reach $100,000 in annual tuition by 2025. Essentially, there is a vast number of people who made a decision in their first year of adulthood (sometimes earlier) to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on training that they may not end up needing. If that isn't crazy, I don't know what is.
How did that speech go? Did they even accept that possibility? And yeah if you do the calculations college suddenly gets expensive! Sure you got a piece of paper and supposed knowledge... but you also now need to 1. find a job that uses it 2. that pays enough to pay back the huge debt. I tell you people gone crazy!
@@MasticinaAkicta Thanks for asking! It went well, and it got me a high grade. I had a very open-minded English teacher last year, which was a good thing. I don't think that many others would have accepted that topic. Indeed, college can be a crazy expense. One should only do it if they are sure (to some extent) of what they want to do, not because of the "parties" or "experiences." I am planning to attend music college for piano and organ, but I do not plan on attending any school that is not worth my time just because I feel that I "should" do it.
High school senior here and I can relate. I feel so alone right now. I know that my high school GPA doesn't mean shit and college is not a place for me. But I am pressured by all sides to choose and apply for these money-hungry schools. I am flunking in classes as I cannot see the point of it anymore and I am getting judged at every turn. I feel like shit daily and so depressed. But I will get through this as I know what my dream is and as I am working toward it despite the current situation. I thank you for making this video cheers. ^^
I'm a high school senior I'm scared for my future. I don't know what I wanna do and my family members are telling me to go and that it's required to go to a college.
Even im Flunking Classes i Really See No point in this Knowledge that im being Taught in School Busniess Was Fine But English and Others Not Worth but i dont Need uni cause Waste Of investment but its MAKES ME PISSED when my dad says its an Investment for you its CLEARLY NOT AN INVESTMENT FOR ME and i do not want to go i wanna Follow my Own dream and Passion id even Work my A** off and Earn Something that defines Real HARD WORK.
Well there are exceptions to that rule Software engineering is one I've known people personally to get into professionally without a degree. My uncle never finished his mechanical engineering agree. He dropped out his 2nd year due to family issues. He still became a mechanical engineer through self study and mentorship. Honestly if your goal is to be employed rather than self employed then by all means go. Elon Musk is a far more famous example than my uncle as someone who taught himself an engineering discipline without a degree. Than again like I said he was never intending to be employed in the first place.
@@AmazingStoryDewd Very true, but Elon Musk came from a background of extreme privilege. He had emeralds dripping from his pockets. He could choose to do or not do what he wished.
You’re entirely right! You cannot, and I mean CANNOT get any sort of good stem job without a degree. If you’re trying to become a mechanic you may get by because it’s a trade and when it comes to trades degrees aren’t always necessary. However, many fact based careers aren’t like that, like a historian, a physicist, etc. Many jobs even require licenses because they can’t be sure you know what you’re doing, like psychologists. If you’re doing a trade or art, it may be better to get real life experience, but this doesn’t apply to all careers.
College is for someone who wants to pursue their dream professions, If your dream is to become a doctor, engineer, architect or lawyer, etc. then go to college, but if you have plans or wanna do something different with your life then don't go to college.
Most well paying positions that are not heavily labored require a BA. That is paramount. I was accepted into a prestigious art school that I had no financial support to continue now I am drowning in student loan debt. I can say going to college on parents money is a privilege.
I took college classes my senior year of high school, and I really enjoyed the classroom experience… but I still felt like most of it was busywork BS. My sisters have degrees and they were the saddest, sickest, and most miserable during their college years. Needless to say, didn’t make me want to enroll. I now have an entry level job at a company I really like and I’m determined to be someone that proves it’s possible to succeed and have a fully funded retirement WITHOUT a degree. 💪
First off, fantastic video, you did a really great job. I’m currently a senior in high school approaching my last semester and I’m so stressed out about college and adulthood. My parents expect me to go to college but I 100% do not want to, but I often think, “Why not just get it over with?” but then I’m like “Because I can’t” I have a dream job that does not require college but it’s not a guaranteed thing either, and after all the anxiety, depression, mental breakdowns, and trouble i’ve had with high school I truly don’t think I’ll get through college in a healthy way. I’m just scared that not going will be a big mistake and that I’ll end up with a miserable life. Adulthood as well is such a big change, moving out, getting a job, and all but I often feel like I’m so far behind and that I won’t adjust well. I don’t wanna waste thousands of dollars and kill my mental health for a piece of paper i reluctantly got that I’ll never use, but most people around me are putting this idea that if I don’t go to college I’ll be broke and live a bad life. My siblings and my friends try to calm me down and reassure me but this entire topic just raises my anxiety. I don’t know what to do or how to do it, in terms of adulthood, but I really, REALLY, don’t wanna go to college.
Same here. But you know what. The world didn't end. And there will be possibilities elsewhere. Sure many people in college would have a better chance getting a job. But those who choose that path do end up dropping out even if they did try. There are still jobs and possibilities that don't need a degree. College or not, you still will struggle. But you are an eagle swifting through the air, conquering the moment with ur triumph. You can do it!
Your feelings about college and everything else tell me you do not have the desire or motivation to go to college let alone succeed at it. Explore all kinds of other alternatives, even the military especially the air force or navy. See what you can qualify for in the way of training that you can use back in the real world when you get out.
Im 26 and im returning back to study a career. I think that being aware of your own privilege is important. Ive been in the workforce since im 18 years old and although you can climb your way up it is much more difficult to get were you want to. I miss the opportunity to just learn. Don't take it for granted. It is time spent wisely. Even if you didn't end up using your degree the perspective that ot gives you is far more good than staying in the same place in the same mindset. It does teach you to question, verify and understand that people study for a reason. Some careers do need you to study and really really understand what you're learning.
I am currently 22 years old in the Communication Sciences & Disorders undergraduate program. I only have 4 more semesters to go before I get my bachelors. I previously went to Community College for 2 1/2 years and got my associates, went straight into a 4-year-university and had a MAJOR mental breakdown during the first semester. So, I took Spring 2022 off to get myself straight. College is NOT for everyone, and that should be respected. There are so many careers out there that do not require degrees, it all depends on what you want to do, but just know that anything you do will be important. Daycare teachers, store clerks, medical assistants, vet assistants, they all help the economy progress. Without them, the ones with the degrees would be struggling. The ones who own the businesses would have no one to work for that business. I personally want to go to school, get more of an education because I am a high school drop out and got my GED, but I tell my nieces who are in high school: college is a choice, not a necessity. You’ll find your way in life no matter what. If you want to go to college later, and experience life more first, I recommend doing that. Adults expect teenagers who have been in school from 5 years old to 18 years old, with no life experience, to know what they want to do, assume they’re going to college, and zoom through it right after high school. It’s okay to take a year or two to breathe. It’s okay to take decades to breathe. It’s okay to live your life the way you want to live it, because in the end it’s your life. No one else’s.
Thank you for this vid ❤️ When I was younger I wanted to go to college but between my spiritual awakening and really seeing what schools all about , I’m really considering not going! I wanna do what makes me happy and what I love. In a way people told me that without a college degree I would be nothing! But I will prove them wrong .
I’m in this situation rn. It’s been really hard cause all my life I’ve been the one who makes the good grades. I’ve even received a full ride..but I can’t help but feel so stuck. I don’t really want to continue college. I’m always told to just do it or you won’t go anywhere but I feel so depressed. I wake up sad and unmotivated for my classes. Im gonna try taking strictly online classes to see where it takes me. I don’t mind doing the work it’s more so actually going to school. We’ll see.. but part of me is saying that college isn’t really for me.
College is still for rich students who can afford to take classes that are easy for themselves and enjoy the carefree social lifestyle. College’s biggest selling point has been the social experience because the best colleges have good nepotism networks. If you’re poor, you can’t really network efficiently
@@fit3864 update: your depression is better? + self-reflection going good? hope u find something, meanwhile rest and really think think think plan plan
The problem with college is that it gives parents, employers, and others the idea that you can deal with any issue that someone throws at you because you have a college degree. I am a computer programmer, and I went into my own business providing my own applications because I didn't like jobs where they would ask me to do stuff that was open-ended rather than spec'ed out. I'm not a business analyst, as I didn't go to school for that, and I can only design someone else's software if I see a spec. Just because I have a college degree, that doesn't mean I can do anything someone expects me to do when they are calling the shots.
I'm thinking of not finishing college because online classes are more tiring than face to face classes. It increased my anxiety and made me lose my humanity because I feel like a fucking robot. Online class expect you to be online all the time, that's why I'm always anxious because of unending updates through group chats. It won't give you time to relax even though you have a free time. Those free time of yours will only spent worrying of what other activities you will have to do. Or are there new updates on gc or emails? THERE WILL BE NO MORE RELAXATION. It's no wonder that in this generation, there are more individuals with high rate of anxiety. Our wellbeing is more important!
I'm attending university in Italy and what I can say is that it's super frustrating. I'm attending first year of archaeology and I always thought that I would have liked it so much. I surely made good friends but that's it. I always feel sad, depressed, burnt out, useless, stressed and I feel like my mental health is deteriorating day by day. I don't know what to do. I just want to work in a bookshop or a library.
I'm a diploma student and I can't take the pressure any more. I think I don't think I will be able to handle another 3/4 years studying abroad plus the fees here is unbearable I miss my mom and my home country so much. I think I'll work here for a few years and then come back home to settle down
Here because I still regret dropping college due to stress... Honestly, this whole comment section feels like a support group. I joined college because I relied a lot on approval of others at the time, and I feared that if I didn't, that I wouldn't be able to make it in the world. Now I am out of college and preparing to do my resume so I can get a full time job.
Wah, such a beautiful self-fullfiled opinion, thank you for sharing your thoughts on it! I was struggling last 3 days if I need college or not, I was praying and asking God if it's his plan to me, and lastly I finally found your video which 100% similar with my own opinion, probably college is not for everyone to make happiness. The best happiness is to live life you always wanted and be financially free! ✨ Keep the great work!
:) exactly ! Plus do not forget plenty of careers exist without a college degree. I hate how society frowns upon people that can’t attend college or won’t attend college. There’s two roads and I’m guessing the less traveled one is also the one people judge the most.
@@yolop1485 I love you comparison about the roads. Agree that one of the roads is the most judged, only because fear prevents people from fulfilment. Plus, some types of education wants to keep us poor. ✨
the best things i got from college were the Friends i made there (all of them are still my friends 10 years later), but nothing to do with studying in itself (i am autodidact and i never needed professors to study any topic anyway). College was a good period of my life because i balanced my routine between studying, working out, and having freetime for playing guitar and playing video games. again , this can be done without college.
I really enjoyed this ‼️ I finished my bachelors last year and after having a gap year between then and grad school, I’ve really come to the conclusion that I DONT wanna do college no more 😭 so hopefully as I’ve been trying new things and finding out what I like and truly love to do, that it will open up opportunities and allow me to gain profit
A friend of mine committed suicide over a letter you can find in your alphabet soup. They say college is optional, but the job market says otherwise. The need to go to college is more or less a chance to survive in life, but what's the point if a grade is devasting enough, it can drive an individual to take their own life. Not even losing a job can make someone decide so quickly to take that route, but the letter C can? College is not for everyone, it is not for people who can not take stress lightly. The option is really up to you just please make sure you know yourself and accept your own limitations, if people get upset over your decision don't worry about them they'll be okay and if they congratulate you if you decide to go (based on my experience) again don't worry about them because they know their not the ones that going to stress out.
I'm currently halfway through my first semester of college, and I honestly can't stand it. I want to learn how to code to potentially be a software engineer. Even in the one class that actually has to do with coding (the rest being generals that just take up time I could be learning other things with), I'm not learning as much as I think I would on my own. Sometimes we're even required to look stuff up online. In addition to coding, I also want to try voice synthesizing, and get back into learning Japanese. College right now does not reflect these things that I want to learn.
There are many free websites offering training in coding! I was rolling the idea around my head on being a software engineer and found these websites. You just have to type in 'free coding websites' into your search engine. (I'd tell you the sites, but I don't remember them. I'm sorry!)
A big problem with college for so many students is the bullshit elective courses you have to take in the first 2 years. You know, the ones that supposedly make you a well-rounded person. They usually involve things that you hate to do. For me it was writing essays and reading thick, boring books. My freshman English class almost had me dropping out. We had to read the IIliad and the Oddesey. I would read for an hour and then find myself wondering what the hell I had just read. I'm the math/engineer type. I like solving problems and designing stuff. I can barely stomach liberal arts crap.
I just know in my heart that college isn’t for me. Its just hard to change my perspective after I’ve been told for years that college was necessary if I want to be successful.
It isnt hell military can get you so much further in life than college. To get government jobs that pay six figures they take former members of the military before college graduates. Even something like military intelligence, something you only need a high school diploma to enlist for, pays 80-130K out of the military. They get paid as much as people who get an engineering degree and even if you went to college if you dont have experience in that profession you will not be hired. So basically without military the chances of getting into an intelligence agency is almost nothing. Same with law enforcement and many other government jobs that can pay 6 figures.
@@strykeplaysmcjohnpickhypix1205 idk where we can chat so i guess ill just write here. I'm 19, I didn't listen to the advice in the video and went to uni anyway, then dropped out after 4 months (only because I forced myself to, i wanted to leave on my 1st day of classes). I'm not sure how to phrase this, my perspective has evolved, I feel like my opinion is torn through different lenses: 1) My idealistic self who imagines what an ideal world would look like. For instance one in which schools weren't businesses or factories of the state or childcare, one in which i would have been more free to study what i like, where i would have received much more support, one in which i would have been valued for my natural love for learning instead of feeling excluded due to my high creativity/different learning methods/lack of interest in the "exammy part" of school. 2) My self who has had to adapt to our modern world and educate myself extensively on its functionning and my place in it. One where digital relations are the norm, where nature is endangered, where everything goes through beaurocracy, one where EVERYONE GOES TO UNIVERSITY and where existing outside of it is rare/challenging, one where access to most satisfactory professions rely on a set of stupid documents you have to pay thousands for. 3) My eager self, highly emotionally driven, highly connected to what people call "inner child", passionnate and energetic, who believes in what it believes and chases dreams and wonders. 3) My indifferent self or depressed voice, who doesn't believe that any of my dreams can be reached, and that it shouldn't matter too much anyway because no my environment I can always find means to create happiness and to be productive/have a positive impact highly focused on my values. 4) My more rational voice, who asseses all these factors and synthesises them into something else. I listen to the fourth when it comes to bigger decisions like these. For smaller ones, i alternate between different voices and perspectives. Why? Because I've met someone who had a very positive impact on my life and they always thought in very rational ways, and because I've learnt that rationality combats anxiety better than anything else (and anxiety is the fucking death of life). Rationality means I am free to go volunteering and travelling and do crazy shit any time when I'm out of uni, but that I have to go to uni UNLESS my circumstances change. And that I am allowed to be a terrible student who only does what they want to do PROVIDED i pass my exams and get that degree and all that. Yet nonetheless, sometimes, doubt clouds my thinking. Am I doing so just to get a false sense of safety because I am too affraid to look behind the curtain? Or because deep down I believe I am too incompetent to take care of myself, my career, and my friendships outside of a structured system called uni? Yeah, most likely. That video certainly brought that feeling back up again. However it seems to be very little documented and doesn't fit the general narrative of the world we live in, one in which being unsatisfied with ones life is THE NORM, where the job market + housing market are in a crisis, where loneliness and anxiety are so rampant. For fuck's sake, I have an israeli friend who will have to serve several months in jail because he refuses to do his military service (mandatory by the state, not doing your service is also HIGHLY frowned upon by the israeli people), in other words because of his beliefs/personhood/existence. He's MY AGE. One of my favourite youtubers works as a cashier even though she studied at Oxford. Some of my friends have to work full time alongside studying because of their upbringing. I think it's unreal to discard all of that. I'd be interested in knowing your perspective on what I said, what you are experiencing and what has been said in the video.
I’m currently a senior in high school and during this quarantine it has made me question some things. I feel like college isn’t right for me and that I won’t necessarily fit into their environment but I also feel like I’m making a mistake. What if I’m over exaggerating? I mean these past three years of high school haven’t been so peaceful either. I’ve constantly felt depressed, my anxiety skyrocketed, I grew even more insecure, I gained weight and everywhere I stepped and sat down in class I completely felt exhausted. And I also question if this will be another cycle in my next four years of college. I used to have passion back in freshman year and wanted to do many things, I still do but my decision of taking many Ap classes and honors kinda messed me up. And I felt so stupid. I have a friend who’s taken the same amount of classes and works without having to try so hard which made me really insecure compared to her. I would always tell myself I wasn’t smart because I wasn’t able to pass some things. I truly love learning new things and cultures but sticking my face in a book, looking at a screen and finding the meaning of some useless quote and turning it into an essay for hours seriously exhausts me. And I have this fear of being judged by my mom and her family, I mean I took all these classes just so I decided not to go to college? The only benefit I have gotten was being in the top 10% of the school but even after all of that, it hadn’t given me a perspective on what I wanted to do with my life. Although I have a clue on what I want to do now it doesn’t necessarily require a degree but I still feel so trapped. And I can’t really tell anyone about this
I say follow your heart ❤ if high school is making you feel less than and depressed, I suggest don't go to college because those feelings will be intensified. I hated college and I only went for a year, I felt like I was wasting my time and I only went cause my high school pushed it so much and I didnt follow my own mind. I'm deciding now to become a self taught software developer and learn code because I'm a tech geek 😝 and save up money at my job to maybe get my degree at a later time, cause employers could care less about a degree they care about skills and experience. But I hope I helped you a little with my little story ❤❤ I hope you follow your heart and do what you love, at the end of the day life is too short not too. Best wishes to you and your amazing future!!! 🤗🤗🤗 hugs!!!
@@JG-ok6vv You're more than welcome ❤🤗🤗🤗 college I feel like is the last step in life for accreditation, and status. But skill and experience comes from working and being hands on with people in whatever field you choose and that can be just finding a job you love. I'm definitely taking a break from it, if I do go back to college it's going to be online. The main thing I hated was staying in a dorm with complete strangers. Talk about nerve wracking lol 😝😝
Desperately trying to envision a future where I don’t need my degree to do what I want. College isn’t for me, but the only things I can do that will make me happy won’t hire me without a degree. I’m 25 and I feel like if I don’t get this degree that I’ll spend the rest of my life working a job I hate to just bearly be able to survive. I can’t take this pressure and I feel like I’m suffocating all the time
When I was in 11th grade, I experienced the most stressful year of my life. I had to repeat grade 11 and when the time comes that my batch mates are now graduating in senior high school, my mom kept on telling me to work harder because I'll be graduating in few months. But my mother doesn't know that I'm still in grade 11 and is not graduating on that year. So 2 monthe before my "supposedly" graduation, I moved out of my mom's house and applied as an entertainer in bars ( don't judge me, that work isn't just about sex, I'm still a virgin even now lol) just by talking to the customers and drinking with them, I get paid even higher than the average salary of people who has a degree. People judged me for going on that job but, who cares, society won't give you something to eat when you have no food. They're just there to judge everything that you do. So I kept on moving forward, and was able to save money. I'm planning to build a condo like apartments and a public library/coffee shop and will only hire under graduate people. It's just amazing how you don't really have to go to university to have a stable income and be successful. Success comes from different ways, it's just the options comes with either you enjoy your life now and suffer later or suffer now and enjoy the rest of your life. I'm not saying that college is not worth it. It's just that, children learn from an experienced adult, while adults learn from their own experience.
I’m a Junior in high school, and if you ask me if I’m eager or really want to go to college, my answer is “meh” or “idk”. I know I want to do a career in the arts, probably something to do with crafting/creating (like maybe a craft artist or something else) and with a lot careers like that, you don’t really need college. I’m thinking either to apply to college next year and defer it for a year to take a gap year or just go straight into community college, since it’s cheaper and the CC I was looking at has something similar to what I probably want. I agree that if you don’t want to go to college or you want to do a career that you don’t need a degree, you don’t have to go. But I’m afraid if I don’t go or I take a gap year, I wouldn’t have something productive to do like a internship or a job, or whatever I want to do, I wouldn’t get there.
I understand her frustration but as the son of African immigrants my parents taught me education was very important but in reality I only am going to college because I want to make money not just to learn.
not me watching these videos to seek validation on why i don't want to go to college :D...i already have a set plan on what i want to do in life and am trying to work towards them. hopefully if it works out i can live life without a college degree but if not i'm gonna have to reconsider my options again...i'm turning 17 in september so wish me luck :)

Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you. I feel like the only one not feeling the ‘uni is the best years of my life’ mantra. I’m in my second year and my grades are good but I’m so unhappy
I'm getting close to graduating high school and I am completely lost. Im scared of collage and I don't think it will be my best option currently. I have no Idea what job I want and the only work experience I have is landscape work. Seeing this vid does make me feel better about not wanting to go to college but obviously I'm still going to look into it just in case.
You still need a college degree if you want to become an actuary or an accountant. College is not just for doctors or lawyers. I do agree that many students go to college for worthless majors and can’t find jobs after they graduate. College is worth it for many careers
College is not just worth is for many careers, but absolutely essential. Try applying for a job as a chemical engineer without a degree. Ain't happening!
My girl work needed her degree from her last week and I was worried about her loosing her job 😴 but everything good now only because of deelscafe good work 👍.
I love your editing style Grace! Thank you for making a video about this subject. I have always questioned myself about why I'm taking these college classes right now and how they weren't really relevant to real-world scenarios. I don't understand why college needs to teach us their style right now but I do feel like that this generation is much more advanced in technology that college seems to be out of date. Anyways, keep up the amazing work! :) Definitely gonna subscribe!
I'm currently in a 3 year advanced diploma program that I don't specifically enjoy but it has some relations to hobbies and what I like doing. After watching this video and understanding what want to express I might opt to the same program that is only 2 years and a diploma instead of an advanced one. My only problem is people keep telling me the program I'm in "Electromechanical Engineering" is such a good program which stems out to lots of different careers. I keep getting mixed feelings about it but I'm going to re-watch this video and think hard about my choices and just take a leap of faith instead of thinking over and over about it.
Fantastic video! Your point about never applying your college education in your work is so real. As a college senior "studying" media studies, I have taught myself more valuable skills for my future career than college ever has. As a side note, one of my biggest gripes with college is the idea of the "core curriculum." In my experience, it's an excuse to force students to pay for college for an extra two years taking classes that have little to nothing to do with what we want to pursue. All under the excuse that it makes us "more well-rounded individuals."
Thank you so much!!!!! I dropped out of High School because it began draining the very living life energy out of me. I realised that I loved telling stories, wanting to become a writer and so I realised I didn’t need college or even have to complete the remaining harrowing year and a half of this soul draining high school. I feel free now, but my creativity still isn’t back. It will come back soon, and I hope so it does in time. Thank you so much!!!!
In the past i tried to tell myself that i enjoy this and i want this, forced myself through the whole process and now i have to write my finishing work finally, but i really despise it. I even despise the general office jobs you can get with this degree, i worked in that environment for a year and i hated every second of it, just like i hate every second of this finishing work that i have to write now. This whole 3,5 years were just stuff that i can learn anytime if i want to because the information is free and accessable for everyone.
Thanks for this video, really. I came here to get some support after making a crucial decision. I hope society will be more open about this issue and normalize not taking degree is okay.
I appreciate that you pointed out that the common college dropout successes people love to cite are few and almost always have genius level IQs. However, the fact that you come from an affluent neighborhood in New York and ARE STILL GETTING A COLLEGE DEGREE makes one need to take this with a grain of salt. You’ll never know what it’s like to be from a poor working class family and have 99% of all the doors closed to you because you don’t have a degree.
I’m starting to feel like I don’t want to do college either but at the same time I’m terrified that if I don’t do it, I’m gonna be some sort of failure or something
the first week of college i had was hell and it all became even worse when i realized i had glorified the school im in and the path "i chose". i totally agree with the word she preaches but even then i am scared of what would i do.
I'm an upcoming 2nd year nursing student and I don't know what to do. I super love my course and it is my dream profession... But this COVID situation made it bad. I want to stop studying for a while and take internships abroad and then continue it when they bring back face to face classes. It's just so hard to be in med related course and learning via zoom lol! We did not even dissect a corpse or even just a pig's heart. No hospital duties or any other experiences. Pure online classes 🤮🤧
Online courses can be fine for some subjects like history or math, but subjects that need labs to flesh out the learning process should never be attempted online. They simply do not work!
@@kurtsalm2155 we have people saying you have to go to college to be successful and then they go and there is not a single job out there. Other cases is other companies won't hire people with a college degree because they think they will quit when something better comes along. It's horrible. I had an Environmental Science degree. It means nothing now.
The part that I struggle with is meeting new people.. I'm 21, I'm not going to college and I work from home in my own business, so I'm not in these environments that facilitate meeting new people, definitely college is not for everyone, but it sure has its advantages

Love to see this for the people who are very unsure or a little lost on whether if the tedious college is right for them or if its simply not and they realize "oh I dont need college to be successful or to live out my dream, I just need to go a path that will get me where I would like".
I think part of the problem is people's idea of college in their head (including yours). For me, I saw college as an overglorified vocational school, and almost like a necessary evil. I did not WANT to go to college, but saw it as necessary for the life and career I wanted. It is impossible to have my job without at least a bachelor's degree. I did not go into college with some starry-eyed dreams about the ~*~college experience uwu~*~ I was there to get a degree to get a job; nothing more and nothing less. I also started with community college before transferring, and lived at home while going to a public, in-state university, which means that I vastly decreased the money I spent. I went to college for five years, and on average I spent around 1k/semester in community college, and 3-5k/semester in university. A lot of people balk at the idea of doing what I did because they believe the college experience is essential. It's not. And if you're going to college to get that experience, you're going for the wrong reason. I also think it's important to emphasize the realistic alternatives to college, instead of encouraging people to spend that time traveling (see also: spend money) or something of that sort. Vocational/trade schools, joining the military, and starting apprenticeships/other formal training programs are important and valuable alternatives, instead of encouraging people to drop out of college just because it's hard and without a solid alternative in mind (like I said, forgoing college and instead going to, say, welding school).
Grace, one of life's greatest achievements is to be in control of it. And I believe that the best way to be in control is for you to have your own business. You could work in a cushy job for a long part of your career, but one day your employer will see you as past your use by date. Yes get some experience first, but by your mid to late 40's you really need to be working for yourself. I say this because I care. The richest person in my home city left school at 13 and worked hard.
I only joined college bc i felt trapped, i didnt know what to do and my parents did not support my love for art at all. Not even for my interest in robotics. I knew it was a scam even before i applied, i just could not have the confidence or courage to SPEAK UP and be true to myself. I am currently trying to drop out, one month left. I cant handle it, i know ill have debt, i just cant do it. I want to exercise, i want my depression that ive had since middle school to go away, i want to feel like a person and not a mindless robot just doing whats told. I want to sleep better, eat better, learn to dance, advance my art and teach myself coding. College has so much work to do that i dnt even have time for myself. I cant be there fo my family
Got arthritis. Had to drop classes because I could barely walk. Got fired because I couldn't make it to work. Recovered. Went into a depression. Failed and missed classes, having to drop again. Was denied financial aid and now I can't go now that I am better- now that I am ready and prepared mentally. Now I need to find a new job to save up and go again, or still get a new job and then save enough money to start an art business... I feel like the universe is trying to punch me while I'm down.
Good video, it's kind of the same here in Australia. Thankfully we have a few alternatives which are available. Loved how you said "alternative possibilities" an inspiring statement! *thumbs up*
I'm watching this video after coming from my class, when I am full the depressed and feels like college is not for me . I think I will overcome my problem and finish my degree. I have got little inspiration from your video
In France, where I live, I feel like it's almost seen as a bad choice to go to college. Engeneering schools are more looked up to. When you have very good grades in highschool it's weird to go to college, maybe because it's almost free. I still choose to go. And I really thought I would be very free and happier and that I would have so much more time to spend as I wanted, and that I would have many friends... But in the end, I think I was influenced by the American Culture because my degree felt almost the same as highschool. I can't imagine what it is to go through that and to grow debts in doing so.
Me living in asian household and go to college taking degree that i hate just because it's cheaper and my parents make me to do it. Im okay :") I feel like i want to be a T-rex not because i wanna be big and strong, but i wanna be extinct as well.
I'm not going to college because i'm enjoying to make some money when i was in high school. I'm a freelance designer, but online. And now i would start to learning marketing and bussines to scale up my designs :).
I have 6 months before I'll have to go to college and literally everyone in my family is telling me to take science and do IIT Engineering, they aren't even asking me what I want to do or if I want to go to college, to them, if I don't go to college and don't do IIT I am a complete failure. I mean, its not like I don't know what I would love to do for the rest of my life, its just I am not confident enough to go through that path because everyone around me is against that and it makes me feel like "what if I end up regretting it" its so frustrating cuz even my friends have decided what they want to be already and I feel so left out. They even told me I have to pass highschool with 85% or above cuz it's THEIR standards, highschool has been so depressing, I really don't want to be stuck in this cycle of going through endless studying just cuz that's what everyone wants me to do or that's what everyone is doing, I know it'll ruin my health more and more. I don't even know how to convince my parents to let me do what I want to do. And even my relatives and filling them up with stuff like "oh yeah, IIT is the right choice " like image letting others pick your future and its literally not smth you wanna do.
You definitely do not have the motivation to succeed at college. You should not go. They say you can "find yourself" at college. No -- more likely you get lost even more stuck in boring, meaningless classes. Add to that, anxiety over spending big tuition money and getting very little for it.
So true if you want to be a doctor, college is required. That’s why I used to attend a training school where I don’t have to waste time and money on student loans.

Online school made me hate college and it’s only my first year. They expect so much of my time that everyday is literally the same.
Same. I think online college made me hate living.
I can relate,feels like a trap grr!
I’m dual enrolling right now and I’m already done with it all lol
Similar. I was so drained into a semester, and felt so out of touch with wasted time and effort. Think I'm gonna pause and actually have a processed plan before continuing.
Same. It is more tiring than face to face classes. You have to be online all the time because of the updates constantly from group messages.
I tell u ...do wat is acceptible in society, dont take unneccessary tension ...so try to complete graduation
Learning doesn't have to come from a formal classroom and as education costs continue to rise, it seems more and more apparent that the ROI from that education isn't getting fulfilled!
i wish my dad was encouraging and open minded nice ceomment

I realized this part way through, so I dropped out before I even had enough credits for an associates degree. Best thing I ever did.

DO NOT BORROW FOR COLLEGE. Absolutely not. I give you fair warning. The debt isn't worth it. If you can pay cash then it might be ok but if it requires debt, no way. You'll thank me later.
Heydo
you can perhaps look for colleges elsewhere in the world.
Collage is good if you're from a *wealthy* family
For real, easy to just say yeah I'm going to apply again when you have unlimited funds, they'll never understand the struggle of you only have one chance and opportunity and if you mess it up then it's all over and your money is going to a waste of time for the rest of your life

One should only do it if they are sure (to some extent) of what they want to do, not because of the "parties" or "experiences."
I am planning to attend music college for piano and organ, but I do not plan on attending any school that is not worth my time just because I feel that I "should" do it.
You will get through it!! High school sucks, there's so much more out there.

I will say this: if you’re looking at a stem career in the future (engineer/scientist/ mathematician), definitely get a college degree.
What about for robotics and the cool shet I see in the internet that shit looks so dope when I see it.
This post did not age well…..
College is for someone who wants to pursue their dream professions, If your dream is to become a doctor, engineer, architect or lawyer, etc. then go to college, but if you have plans or wanna do something different with your life then don't go to college.
I seriously wish I’d known all of this four years ago. Going to uni is by far the worst thing I’ve ever done
My parents expect me to go to college but I 100% do not want to, but I often think, “Why not just get it over with?” but then I’m like “Because I can’t”
I have a dream job that does not require college but it’s not a guaranteed thing either, and after all the anxiety, depression, mental breakdowns, and trouble i’ve had with high school I truly don’t think I’ll get through college in a healthy way.
Have u considered trade school?

Sometimes college uses scammy tactics for your money. It is business, unfortunately that is
Glad I got sick and dropped out of university ;3
Its just hard to change my perspective after I’ve been told for years that college was necessary if I want to be successful.
same but a lil different. Wanna chat about it?
Don’t need a college degree to be successful

It isnt hell military can get you so much further in life than college. To get government jobs that pay six figures they take former members of the military before college graduates. Even something like military intelligence, something you only need a high school diploma to enlist for, pays 80-130K out of the military. They get paid as much as people who get an engineering degree and even if you went to college if you dont have experience in that profession you will not be hired. So basically without military the chances of getting into an intelligence agency is almost nothing. Same with law enforcement and many other government jobs that can pay 6 figures.

I'm 19, I didn't listen to the advice in the video and went to uni anyway, then dropped out after 4 months (only because I forced myself to, i wanted to leave on my 1st day of classes). I'm not sure how to phrase this, my perspective has evolved, I feel like my opinion is torn through different lenses:
1) My idealistic self who imagines what an ideal world would look like.
It's just that, children learn from an experienced adult, while adults learn from their own experience.
i needed this. it's like my last push. thank you.

You still need a college degree if you want to become an actuary or an accountant. College is not just for doctors or lawyers. I do agree that many students go to college for worthless majors and can’t find jobs after they graduate. College is worth it for many careers

I thought I was alone... keep speaking up! One day, the world will change for the better
As someone who plans to attempt the tech industry, I thank you for your inspiration.
I want to get a vet tech degree, after watching this, am changing my mind about college.
College degree destroyed my life. I paid for it dearly. It failed to give the results everyone said it would do.
What was your major? So many majors have zero worth in today's job market.
@@kurtsalm2155 we have people saying you have to go to college to be successful and then they go and there is not a single job out there. Other cases is other companies won't hire people with a college degree because they think they will quit when something better comes along. It's horrible.
I had an Environmental Science degree. It means nothing now.
Thanks for this I gonna do RUclips after I finish high school
The part that I struggle with is meeting new people.. I'm 21, I'm not going to college and I work from home in my own business, so I'm not in these environments that facilitate meeting new people, definitely college is not for everyone, but it sure has its advantages
what business are you running?
I’m currently a final year in university in UK so a senior for u guys in the US , and I literally feel just like this, I had so many like expectation and hopes when I entered University but now I’m starting to burnout and feel like I wish I had just worked lol and done like open university which is like community college for u guys. I also love photography and want to do freelancing after uni is over alongside any sort of media related job , thank you for this video I feel much better knowing that I’m not the only one who feels like this and I am not excited then ever to just finish this shit😂😂 , I wouldn’t want to dropout because I’m already at the end so might aswell finish it lol
Now excited * haha
College is a Nightmare for Introverted personality types, who hate being in the Spotlight.
im a high school senior and i live in the town next to your hometown!! definitely taking this as a sign
I can't imagine what it is to go through that and to grow debts in doing so.
this is so interesting! thanks for sharing a different cultural perspective
This video is so inspirational thank you!!
Me living in asian household and go to college taking degree that i hate just because it's cheaper and my parents make me to do it.
Im okay :")
I feel like i want to be a T-rex not because i wanna be big and strong, but i wanna be extinct as well.
I'm not going to college because i'm enjoying to make some money when i was in high school.
I'm a freelance designer, but online. And now i would start to learning marketing and bussines to scale up my designs :).
So are you going to college or are you self teaching yourself?
