    A Northern Soul Story
    This short film looks at the lives and music of five people, who were there at the start of the Northern Soul scene, from the Twisted Wheel to the Wigan Casino and what the music and their memories still mean to them.

    Hi Folks great little vid and wierd how all are expats now. I live in Perth Aus but former Wigan lad who spent 24 years in the Army. Similar story to yours and heaps of cassettes until they were stolen from my car and probably ended up in the bin. Once Northern has scorched your soul it leaves an indelible mark. Currently typing this on a remote mine site when I should be sleeping! God bless you all and keep the faith. Like they say, if I have to explain you would not understand. Mike

    Good Bless the brits for keeping this Music alive. They have always been the biggest supporters of Black Music. They knew who the Funk Brothers were before North America did. I first heard about it in Mojo Magazine. I am Canadian and I was stunned at how great the singers were.

    I remember coming back after 15 yrs + away & no hearing NS tunes. Was at Drax & the opening bars to "If that's what you wanted" my favourite all time tune came on & I was buzzing again back in the 70's & had to hit the floor.

    I love the dignity and elegance of the way these soul fans describe their feelings and love of their music. It's hard to describe northern soul to someone who hasn't actually seen for themselves but they do it so well. Loads of favourite records... My all time favourite - A little togetherness. The Younghearts 🙂.

    Many thanks to my childhood friend, Una Hanlon - whom I reconnected with just recently - for telling me about this video. (Una was a devoted Northern Soul fan and is in this video.) Although it was never my scene I admired the enthusiasm of folks who were taking the many frequent trips down from Scotland to those energy packed clubs to dance the night away! And that energy was still apparent when they would talk about their dancing weekend during Monday lunch hour. When I look at the Northern Soul videos, what I love about watching the dancers is the fact you didn't need to wait for a lad to invite you up to dance - you got up and danced whether you had a partner or not - awesome! Happy days for many xxx Loved the video.

    If you read it properly we were all there for a Northern Soul Weekender in Hong Kong, we weren't in a nightclub. There were actually around 200 of us and five of us were interviewed. What makes you think everyone has to stay in the UK and then forget about Northern Soul? It's a big world out there!

  • @drwhatson
    @drwhatson Год назад +1

    'The Beat' by Major Lance was finally released in the UK on Dave Godin's and David Nathan's Soul City label in 1969, which pre-dated the term 'Northern Soul'. In those days it was often called 'Rhythm & Soul' - or just discotheque Soul.
    The records played then were mostly deleted and obscure UK 45s such as Hoagy Lands 'The Next In Line' (Stateside) etc., which had sold very few and some of which were actually b-sides! US imports were few and far between due to copyright issues.
    The floodgates really opened after more US-only releases were discovered following easing of import restrictions during the early 1970s.

    I've actually just been with all my old Soul mates over here in the UK for a month. There is an active soul scene in Australia and lots of us are ex-pats so it doesn't matter where you are in the world, it is still very much a part of our life. Soulies from the UK also come over and attend our Northern Weekenders and vice versa. We look after any Soulies who come over to visit regardless if we have met them before or not and thats the difference in our scene, the special bond.

    I know Andrea used to sweep the floor to get in early. So I did go regularly. The reason we were filmed together is because we were at a weekender in Hong Kong - FACT Una

New one in Whitmore street,, Wigan, Derby, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and at least 4 in London Flamingo and the Discotec in Wardour st the New Scene by the Haymarket.Loved the music loved taking the gear. Magic people, friendly,( not like today everywhere agro)..At 69 still going to soul do's, but leave early cos I'm tired don't dance anymore BUT drift nicely with the sounds, still good company with the young one's KTF.

      Sheven718 I remember one night at the new scene, "Oh, I'm what you would have called a carrot cruncher them days". From Shropshire. Anyway one night there's a raid by the old bill and everybody through all there pill's on the floor and me and my mates had'nt a clue and started to pick them up and because of our accents they let us go..At that time I worked in the Wimpey Bar in Wardour street as under manager Yes good times and very good dudes,Honnored to be among that set of folks.

      did you ever work at the alnight whimpy bar on the corner in oxford st and hanway st ? it was just across the road from the last chance saloon we used to pop over there to take a few more blues , went to the scene and the discotheque but thankfully never got caught up in any raids, very lucky because they were at one time being raided on a regular basis, i still look back on my times "up west" with great fondness, just an impressionable teenager having a very exciting time, brilliant ! just bloody brilliant ! regards dave

    Dave C where are you coming from you have brought colour and race into a very good post and it has totally baffled me personally if those artists you have mentioned have been saying derogatory things well then they are just as much bigots as some one out of the klu klux klan I've always looked at this scene as having a level playing field as both black and white artist are listened to by everyone some people don't even know what colour the people are who are singing for instance I'm black from Guyana in South America and one of my favourite artist is Danny Wagner and for years i never knew he was white same can be said about lots of other singers Dave don't take me wrong but you need to let me know what has put you in the frame of mind

I'm not sure I can make that anyway which is a shame as it would be nice to hook up with a few "soulies" in Asia. You shouldnt comment on things you know nothing about Peaches58, Without the Northern soul scene none of these records would have been discovered , And would be collecting dust in . You only listen to Rap Crap .. and have turned your back on these Classics .....
