- Blue Juice Film - Northern Soul Clips 1995
Maybe the first Northern Soul exposure in a mainstream cinema film.
Released in 1995 this British film feature features a few brief but entertaining segments involving 5 minutes of northern soul related scenes..
The main clip is about 3 minutes long and takes in a sort of a church hall dance floor scene, which features a fair few familiar dancers/faces. Earlier on there is a more spoken part which sets the scene for the dance hall part.
Edwin Starr makes an appearance both as an actor/singer ‘Ozzy Sands’ towards the end of the film and also delivers a great (maybe one of the best tailor-mades made?) northern soul track ‘Price of Pain’. Which plays a major part in the record producers Joshs story.
All the 3 scenes mentioned above have been merged into this one clip.
Blue Juice Film Story Line
JC is at the end of his Twenties and is living with his girlfriend Chloe in a small coastal town in England. He is a surfer legend and one day, three of his friends show up, including Terry who is about to get married. While he is supposed to have the last good time in his life, Josh (a successful Techno music producer) tries to figure out what type of music he likes most and Dean, who sells drugs on a regular basis, must face the fact that his life is not what he would like it to be.

This man is a Legend, I've seen him many times and he always performs well. God bless you Edwin.
Totally agree with @thesoultwins comments. I went from 74-to around 2005, still do the Mecca/Ritz revival in Manchester, I have to say, everyone (still alive) from my era feels the first 5-6 years of all-nighters you do, is like being with an extended family and getting a buzz off new tunes. Whether to dance to or collect the vinyl.
Nobody really wanted Granada TV that winters night in the Casino, and the thought of films being made off the back of it appalled us back then. Having said that I thought the Soul Boy film was fair at best ! Although I really wish I could “unsee” the Blue Juice clip 😅
Edwin Starr . What a performer. Blasted the Four Tops off the stage when supporting , at City Hall Newcastle .
I don't know why, but watching any of these latter-day films about Northern Soul is so cringeworthy and always make me feel unbelievably embarrassed. This one especially so. I am sure the film-maker's intentions are honorable, but I realised a long time ago that you can NEVER ever recapture and replicate the incredible atmosphere, camaraderie and mystique of Northern Soul. You just had to be there.
Your absolutely right 🤣😂😱
I would say that rather than being latter day Northern Soul, it's actually a continuation / tail end of the 'Original' Northern Soul scene being portrayed ..
✊🏼
That's what it seamed to me at the time, late 80's early 90's. I was going surfing in England and dancing to Northern and alot of those dancers were 'Originals'
Alot of folks from the Stoke n Brum area had headed to Cornwall n Devon back then ..✊🏼
Film is about surfing in Cornwall. This is a brief scene about one of the characters trying to impress a girl.
:) I was fairly certain that the clip was AI generated content before the actors started talking, since nothing really seemed to match from the perspective of someone who lived the Mod revival in the early '80s...
@@HkFinn83 :) I once swam in the ocean from Cornwall on a windy day when the world was young, and I can totally see "Surfing in Cornwall" being the topic of a whole coming-of-age movie...
How is it that you make a song so good just to appear as a sequence in a movie? Was searching for the song after hearing it in the movie, wasn’t expecting this
Same thing here, I've been searching for it for years...
Such a great underrated movie!
Totally agree 😊
Absolutely
haha, left inner London aged 29 as it turned out, for good in 72. I have never heard him or all that music. Each to his own I guess, I liked Booker T and have some of their music . Still have it. Green Onions.😀😀😀😀
Curiosity killed the cat kinda hat
I remember this film but couldn't remember it's name I thought at the time the Josh character was a dig at Fat boy Slim. 😁
Yeah crossed my mind a bit too back then.. .
Colette brown 😮
A strangely less creditworthy actress.
I don't have prime or Apple is there another way for me to see this film .
@@AndrewEdwardBaileywhat’s this film called ?
What's that record called the price of pain who is it by. Help
It's Edwin Starr mate (Ozzie Sands) but was never actually released!
@@jtrigzy5710 yes iv found out just wish I could have that record it's brill
Ace film 👍🏼✨
What film is it ?
@@rFuzzyBearXBlue Juice... Its little known British road trip, surf film from the 90s. There's a some actors in it who became quite well known. There's a soulful groove about it, nice gentle humour and some good music. Personally, I think it's worthy of cult status 😎.
I may be a little bias as it resonates on a personal level.. Well worth a watch 👍🏼
@@fettlerjohn3419 thanks pal, I just watched northern soul but going to watch this soon
@@rFuzzyBearX I hope you enjoy it, I had to search a bit for it. It's the one with Ewen Mcgregor and Catherine Zeta Jones...
Who was the actress who played the DJ? She's so pretty.
:) She's not "pretty", she's actually beautiful - AND at the top of her game, judging by how she handles that clown before the gods of plot devices make him her lover. According to IMDb, she is British actress Colette Brown.
Just watched this film. She hates him. As she should, he’s a hate able character. Then, cut to next scene and she virtually his girlfriend with no explanation of how that happened. Great writing😂
Could be in the nuance ? I'll have to watch it again.
It’s actually a good film though could do with a better clip
Ion and keb in the film
Keb made me a mixtape back in about 1986 ☺️ I knew his ex, who worked with my ex, and she got the tape for me.
