- The most comprehensive documentary ever made on the Northern Soul scene. A dynamic insight into why this music meant so much to so many. Geno Washington, Paul Smith, Keb Darge and many more lead us through their experience and the impact it had on the people, the power to be someone, to dance like we have never seen before or since!
Check out thefaceradio.com for more Northern Soul, Crossover, Funk & more radio!
These were the GREATEST days of my life. Sadly, for future generations, never to be repeated. If you weren't there, you'll never know what you missed. Mere words & film can NEVER describe what it was actually like to live it K.T.F
apart from acid house then there was nothing ;)
Fantastic memories ❤️
I personally don't know of another genre of music that is as infectious as Northern Soul. I'm 60 now and still listening to it, and loving it too... KTF
I'm american. 65 years old and love it. Wish we had it here in the 70 s when I was a teenager.
Been listening to it and dancing to it for 50 years , I see Simon hunt often and go to many NS events , our young days are our memories but we are still making them and dancing if a little slower to the great tracks we love , I will KTF till the day I die , so don’t let it pass you by ❤✊KTF
Absolutely Outstanding Magnificent Absolutely Remarkably So Interesting Throughout The Film
Thank You For Sharing
Here in 2020 and it still doesn't get old. Dancing in my living room....
falling in my living room
Awesome. Totally relate. Still the same at 57.. My dancing days are over.. However I still get that buzz when I listen to the music.. I was 14 my 1st experience of Wigan I'm eternally grateful 😁
Still one of the best scenes going. Northern Soul is alive and kicking. Fucking love it.
Brings tears to my eyes when i listen to northern soul the best music around ktf.
I went to The Wheel, Torch and Wigan late sixties early 70's; it's all about the Music and the lovely whizz ! and the dancin' of course the guy who said you'd have a quick flashback days later made me laugh out loud, oh how I can relate !! Keep The Faith people x
no sex then
we had sex when we were back home and we are all feeling pretty good coming back down off the whizz 😂
I heard of Fran Franklins passing recently and it bothers me that I still dont know how she died, and only in her early 50s. She appeared on so many of these documentaries, she was practically the unofficial spokesperson for NS fans, and what a beautiful, honest and passionate person she was.
I'm so sad to hear that 😭
She passed away with Cancer, Pulsonar about 6 years ago but she ain't ever gonna go away really is she as she will always be connected too the Dancing of Northern Souls KTF ❤️✌️
Am so sorry to hear this. I didn't know. Lovely lady.
You've probably heard she died of cancer 2014✌️💚

Yes, I found out soon after I made that comment 8 years ago (my God time flies!) In 2014 I struggled a little bit to find info about her maybe my low tech phone wasn’t up to it? Now the info is everywhere, she’s even more legendary now than she was then. NS has also grown into the younger generations consciousness because of her, the equally legendary old school fan base, and NS enthusiasts film makers like Elaine Constantine.
From THE Twisted Wheel, so many great clubs, The Catacomb's, The Mecca, Up the Junction, The Torch, Wigan Casino, the best ones, playing so many styles of Northern Soul. Now in my golden years but so honoured to have played my part...... ”keep the faith" brothers and sisters.....Gaza
Us Norwich Northern Soul Crew, we sure have Soul and I still have the best ever memories of my absolutely fabulous Monday nights at The Samson & Hercules here in Norwich for those Magical Northern Soul sounds as young 13 year olds & on that euphoric up lifting plus so darn uplifting one night a week as we floated away our troubles simply melted away as our Souls all united and became ONE so please all do;..............KEEP THE FAITH!..........X
The Samson was where my NS journey began too. Kirk and his mates had been to Wigan on the saturday and Howard Platt played a couple of Northern songs after the Motown section and there was a huge ring around the dancers. I was blown away and never looked back. Did you go to the fleet in Peterborough and St. Ives too? 73, 74 if memory serves.
Brilliant documentary , I was first introduced to Northern Soul at 17 years old in the "Out Rigger" pub in Birmingham by a girl I knew called Lisa , I heard "Billy Ocean, Love Really Hurts Without You" I said I liked the song , the DJ was selling singles so she bought it for me it was a double A side with"Red Light Spells Danger" I've been hooked even since 👍 !
We were so Lucky, Keep The Faith ❤🇬🇧
All weighed up beautifully in those 5 words "IT'S JUST A WONDERFUL MEMORY"
Got it!Spot on!enough said.
omg ... 'on a magic carpet ride' @ 4.09! Nostalgia right there!
Me too - always do, it's such a powerful thing music and dancing... primeval.
Im 63..never will there be great days and nighters like this again..Nice to see the younger generation k.t.f and keeping the northern soul scene going..BUT they will never feel what "we" the older generation felt the first time around..ain't no soul like the old sole..and thats the truth.✊
@tinadavies4195 I agree perfect comment 👌
I agree with u paul, just so happy to have gone through the latter end, and it stays with me til this very day fella
Hi! I like this Documentary. I am original Mod in 1980s in Toronto Canada, I love Northern Soul. I am fan of Northern Soul. I do wear on my gray Harrington jacket Northern Soul Keep In Faith every where I go. I do stretches, lose up all over my body before I go on dance floor, dancing to Northern Soul. Kicks I love, spin around, I wear Dr. Martens, Mod Tassel Bass Weejuns Loafers shoes on dance floor. Brilliant. It's amaze Northern Soul.
Brings a lump to my throat to see Fran Franklin on this, wish I had seen her dance in person, RIP.
Remember Fran . tomangoes always brings the memories back . x
Finest music ever made 🎶🎶🎶
Really good. More people should know about this.
I was in this at the end with my mates from Bradford,Vernon spinning wow
Vernon spent many Saturdays at mine, after Friday alnighter's waiting for us to go on the Saturday. Great guy

Northern soul ,music , dance moves started more things than people will ever know ,,,,,,,,k,t,f
I gotta say, the floor drops, splits and kicks are great and all but I’ll always be a sucker for some really fluid, rythmatic shuffling.
I went to a party resently four young people were dancing and I was mesmerized ,it turned out it was NS , I was a great dancer in my time I'm 65 now and I'm devastated I missed out on this brilliant dancing ☺
well that was one of the best vids ive seen on northern soul - thanks 4 sharing ktf
me 'ol flatmate Keb,
purveyor of some fine 6ts newies
One of the beautiful thing about Northern Soul to me was that it relinquished the shackles of gender conformity for men. Northern men have and are still repressed by the need to portray themselves as manly, yet Northern Soul allowed them to express themselves.
Similar things applied to highly intelligent people working in the pits or the foundries who shunned further education for the camaraderie, once they closed the next generation of my family became teachers and lawyers. Northerners just need their time to shine.
Major MajorMajor How amazinnnnnnng, I was just saying to my friend Glen that it was always so great to see so many guys felt such liberatng freedom cos they felt free anough to express themselves on the dance floor to the beautiful emotional NORTHERN SOUL numbers at the SAMSON & HERCULES on Monday nights - no stopping us then or now = WOW!
Major MajorMajor Major MajorMajor Correct! Northern Soul changed and empowered many youths to express themselves regardless of stereotypical expectations. About the gifted kids, the early IT industry at the time opened up academia as a perfectly sensible option for bright working class kids looking to explore the new world of work. This was practically on the eve of pit closures and archaic traditional manufacturing industries losing traction in Callaghans then Thatchers Britain.
One the money pal. I was a Dublin northern soul boy. I han the 3,6,9,12 button waistband trousers and shoe's to match. The other ingredient, I can dance, still at 60 like I'm still twenty, Dance is king. 💃🏿🕺🏾☘️🇮🇪
Would like to have had the cash to have gone north and experienced this scene more, the music and dance, fantastic!😎
love this , top northern soul . KTF .

"IT IS the rave culture of the 70's".... 34m55sec.... Definitely, Fantastic - Wish I was there! Much Love x \0/
I was there at Wigan Casino from 1974 to 1977, but I went one last time in 1980.
Can somebody pls put up a playlist of this great documentary!!! Thx!!!
The 70s. Bruce Lee & Northern Soul . I was too young to get in to see Bruce Lee movies and I was too young to go to Northern Soul nighters . but as a school kid I still managed to do both . Still shuffle and still practice my kicks . KTF Thanks for sharing this fantastic vid. I remember Paul Smith shop, being a kid from Nottingham : we wore the bowling shirts and not so much the Hawaiian shirts. But is till had one
Quite a few exaggerations going on here, but Franny's is the best "no bags getting stolen" 😂
Wonderful then wonderful now truly wonderful sounds wish I was young again
Wow such a nice feeling to it . Music so Good .
One of the things that continues to piss me off is the assumption that everyone who went to wigan was taking drugs, I went to wigan from the first all nighter to the last allnighter and never took any damn drugs ever and neither did any of my mates, the music and the dancing was enough for us, it sad that a small percentage seem to think it was a neccessary to get off their heads.
To be perfectly honest if they were off their heads no way could they remember how great the night was..
I'm with you, the music did it all. And let's hear it for the BROKEN WHEEL in Retford.
@@djsimonrossprice9400 you have no idea pal , I got out o bed Friday morning and got in it again Sunday night and I remember lots of people places and situations your talking crap mate no offence not many didn’t take anything some loads and some hardly anything
excellent no more no less
Some great old footage, keep it going.
Can't believe I hadn't seen this..lovely to see some of these people some not with us anymore....
As a Wigan girl, the best time of my life 💕💕
The guy doing the fast spin just goes for it, don't matter if he goes flat. Right on.✌️💚
Brilliant music and dancing
The first music i got right into i mean 16 n arriving at Wigan casino out of this world i think to feel that you really had to be there, this went on a few years best night 78 5th anniversary saw Martha reeves was really up there don't get much better after that it dwindled down best times while they lasted 😉✌️💚
Ha ha ha awesome great really reflects how it felt to me shame I only got into it after Wigan but love it all the same thanks for posting enjoyed it lots!
Me too and from what I can find out she died whilst being operated on for something reasonably routine. I stand to be corrected mind. Fran looking down and still keeping the faith from the far side.
Hi Davie , I heard she died due to Cancer about 6or 7 years ago now, but she's never gonna be gone as she'll always be a part of the dance team, KTF ❤️✌️
One of the finest video's about Wigan that i've seen a few points that i didnt agree with but eh Bruce Lee was a star but he didnt encourage me to dance lol
No one has mentioned the widespread use of speed that was required to keep dancing all night
really good ... cheers ... matey
Great days at the Casino
Leeds Central Soul club then on to the all-nighter at the peer Cleethorpes. Samantha's at Sheffield was another good one. Later the KGB etc etc my god we lived in breathed it. It was the perfect environment for a neuro divergent aka dyslexia autism ADHD a world of your own, zoned into the music, a can of talcum powder in your pocket on a dance floor without having to socialize, my god it was so good, so much so I carried on attending various nighters all days and soul nights open down the country for decades, until a life changing accident stole all that from me. It's only now that I can talk about it. my god, I miss it.
Yup wheel soaking with sweat puddles of sweat x😊
I am in this vid - yes I joined in with the stompers andcan still do many of the moves.
tina silver Where can we see you, what vid time?
amazing, was off to bed....but well just call me fanatical, love thanks xxx
Great just great .
My mate Glen Youngs has just spotted his fellow Builder Buddy from Norwich Tony McGuire aka Billy Wizz taking centre stage on Wigan Casino's megga dance floor wearing his ultra cool black vest top and doing those fab NORTHERN SOUL moves as he then does his best ever SPINS and shows the rest of SOULIES - just how it's mean't to be done................and I say...........................KEEP THE FAITH! oh yeah XxX

You must be psychic. Eight years after your post I hear 'Call Me' and I'm hooked. Tried searching on the lyrics but got nothing. Read the comments and the one track from the whole vid that I didn't know and you name it. What's the chance of that. Many thanks.
It was a dance get girl vibe. All woman love a man that can dance big time. I was a dancer then and still, at 60. Still the Dogs B... X 🕺🏾💃🏿🕺🏾💃🏿🕺🏾💃🏿
That stuff about the "Bruce Lee influence" is utter bullshit. Nobody I ever met (on the scene prior to 1974) ever referenced him. The biggest influence were dance routines by the likes of Jackie Wilson and touring American acts. Spins, high kicks and backdrops were around as early as 1971!
Absolutely spot-on,,,,,,,Bruce Lee nonsense

Please, what is the song in the background from minute 18 to 20?
this does not really look like something i would've ever been into myself but i gotta say it does look like it was alot of fun. plus you didn't have all the drunken brawls and other stupidity that all too often accompanies an "english night out".

Great music, but why the gymnastics, was it a competition?
BEST EVER 100 MPH TUNE.
"COCHISE" PAUL HUMPHREY.!!!!
Really ? We're clearly involved very different scenes. Still each to their own.
Or as it says on the Contempo Label "Conchise" by the Armada Orchestra. Ironically not as concise as it set out be! So many exploitation covers knocking around then, especially on Simon Soussan and Selectadisc's Black Magic label. Thumb A Ride, Going To A Go Go and Papa Oom Mow Mow. The latter also being a (non) hit for Gary Glitter in the same year, 1975 FFS!!
What is the tune at 8.40 ?

Always managed to get room on that dancefloor - even when all the divs started coming after the cameras were let in and the daft TOTP crap. All you had to do was a spin or 2 and spray everyone around with sweat. Also broke a gals nose doing a spin early 76. but it made for a great summer staying in Blackpool lol
And dont know WTF that guy Bill Brewster is talking about with the Northern scene not comercialized. Russ/Walker/Marshall almost killed the scene off by getting all the media recognition they could find. The further underground we keep the scene and all these shite films away then the better.
