Hi Alex, great video and I did bin the 3 wood. Moved to a 4 wood 16.5 degrees and 7 wood 21 degrees. So glad I made the switch….now going for par 5’s in 2 because I feel way more comfortable hitting more loft. Great Vid! Cheers!
Hey dude! Boxing dale sale here in canada i got fitted for a Qi10 driver and wanted the matching 3 wood. I couldn't hit it. During the fitting the employee suggested i try the QI10 5 wood. I hit it perfectly. Purchased the stiff QI10 driver and 5 wood on the spot! First time being fitted and it was so COOL!
I updated my equipment this year. I have driver, 5w, 7w, 5-AW irons, wedges at 50, 54, and 58 degrees. The modern 5w goes almost the same distance for me as the old 3w, but it's easier to hit off the deck. In light rough I can use the 5w where a 3w would be an iffy proposition. The 7w cuts through deeper rough well. Adding the 58 degree wedge as my latest club made it the ideal bag for me. Love the channel, Alex!
Just purchased a new putter and gap wedges 52,56,60. I took out my five wood and decided to keep the three. You did a great job explaining the differences between the two. I’m going back to the 5.
Ditched my 3-Wood for a 5-Wood this spring g and it was the best thing I’ve done for my game. I can use it in some many more spots on the course than a 3-Wood. Plus it’s easier to hit. While I give up distance if I hit the 3-Wood on the button. I’m much more consistent striking the ball with the 5-Wood that it more than makes up for the occasionally great 3-Wood strike.
For a few years, I carried a 20.5 degree Heavenwood which had the same length as my 3 wood. That club was consistent and almost as long as my 15 degree 3 wood. Like, most, golfers, I was, always seeking something better. After going through several fairway woods and hybrids, I just purchased a Krank 5 wood (19 degree) head. I am waiting for my favorite wood shaft to be delivered and will assemble at the same length as a 3 wood. For me, choking down for distance variation works, so I am hoping this can be that club just below driver in my bag.
Having never used a 5 wood before I got one a couple of years ago didn't go expensive went for Taylor made rbz . My favourite club . My go to confident club .
Pulled my 3 wood and added the 18 degree Super Hybrid. Driver's at 11.5 and my 5 wood is 20. I've also got a 21 degree 7 wood. Still playing the settings on the 3 hybrid.
Just upgraded my driver and upgraded my 5 wood.... went with sim 2 max for both. The 5 wood is my go to club on par 5 second shots, second shots on long par 4's and tee shots on long par 3's. Just turned 73.
Like some I have both 3 and 5 woods. There are a few holes on the course I play the most where I can tee off with either but there is one hole where my 5 wood off the tee is the best due to the hill in front of the tee.
Thanks, but I love both my 3 wood and 5 wood. At times I use my 3 in place of Driver. I have taken out my 3, 4, sometimes 5 iron because I have a 4HYD at 21° also. I use a 3 wedge system, PW, GW, and SW.
last club I bought is a putter, ping anser. since I moved to 3 wedge system due to indecision 100 yds in, I have 3, 5, into 3-upward. love it. hoo hooooooo
My most recent purchase is a 7 hybrid. I have poor flexibility so the longer club is much easier to swing and get a good strike than with my 7 iron. I now have a driver, a 5 hybrid, a 6 hybrid ( found one very very reasonably priced) and now my 7 hybrid. Now I have to really take the time to figure out my consistent distance for each club so I can do a better job at picking the correct club.
What it gets down to at the top of your bag is whether you do better with a 3 iron, 3 hybrid or a 5 wood which all go about the same distance but the ball flys higher with the 5 wood (and rolls out less because of the descent angle) and the 3 iron flys lower and rolls out more. This is of course, if you have enough club head speed to hit them all well. If you don't have the club head speed, you should be leaning towards the 5 wood because the lower lofted clubs tend to bunch up in terms of carry distance.
Was thinking of going one length almost all of bag. Have played a old 4 wood 16.5, was thinking just driver and fairway wood regular length then everything else one length
Nice thoughts! Another approach for the higher handicap club golfer could be Driver (1 inch shortened), 4 FW (16,5˚), and the nowadays very popular 7 FW (21˚) instead of a 4 Hybrid. You may couple this with a 5 Hybrid, forgiving irons from 6i-9i, and 4 cavity back wedges (PW-LW). What do you think? Another video could be: play 7FW or a 4H?
It took me a while but I came to the same conclusion. I like the 5 wood much better than the 3. I like the Ping G 425 # 5 Wood quite a bit. 17.5 degrees and I hit it better than a three wood. I'm not horrible with the 3 but I am really good with a 5. So I now have a mess of hybrids including a # 2 hybrid and the 5 Wood in the bag. I like options. The courses can offer many difficult lies and it pays to have choices. Especially a nice mix of hybrids.
I took my 3 wood out of the bag this year, I have, 5h, 7w, 5w, D. Off the deck, my go-to club is the 7 wood, so easy to hit. My most recent purchase is the cobra one length 5 hybrid, it replaced my 5 iron that I struggled to get distance from. #100
@@AlexElliottGolf I found it difficult to hit initially, being short and heavy i kept losing it right. As such didn't trust myself to use it in the course. Its now one of my clubs that I try to practice with on the range. I seem to have mastered the strike now, just have to concentrate on making sure I swing it like my 7 iron. I'll see how it goes on the course this weekend lol
I have just upgraded my driver, 3 wood and 3 and 4 hybrid. I have a 2 hybrid in the bag and as such I am possible not going to put a 5 wood in the bag. Based on my current stats ( distance ) I seem to hit the 2 hybrid further than my 5 wood.
My 5 wood and 3 hybrid overlap each other a bit. 5 wood launches higher, more prone to ballooning in the wind. If im 230-250 out im hitting 3 hybrid off the fairway. 250+ I can just hit my 3w. My 5 wood is a bit redundant rn, debating on ditching it and delofting my 3&4 hybrids to cover the 3w gap and adding a 5 hybrid

Just bought a set of wedges (MD Golf) but will be buying a 5w very soon. Helpful video Alex, thanks. In fact I played yesterday and didn't even use my 3w! I did struggle with my 4 hybrid but thats another story!
Another great tip to start the day as this topic came up on the weekend just passed. I have a 3 and 5 wood in the bag and don’t use the 3. However, it was pointed out that I was limited is selection with my short clubs. So, only having a PW and SW, I was told to swap out the 3W with a GW. What loft would you recommend? As I do find myself having to compromise with a limited selection of wedges. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Hello Marcus!! Great to hear that you are loving Yes I would recommend popping that GW In may save you shots on the short ones around the green. Are you playing this weekend???
@@AlexElliottGolf Hi Alex, yes I am. Saturday is looking to be 26’C however the forecast is predicting 4-10 mm of rain. I’ll now be looking at buying a gap wedge and semi-retiring the 3 wood. Any recommendations?
Hi Alex, Love your videos. I just bought a Cobra King SZ Fairway 3 Wood and a Cobra LTDx 3 Hybrid. I hit them really well and they definitely fill in the gaps in my game.
I have cobra irons (one length) and driver, love them. I have a cobra 3 hybrid that I hit well, just don’t see a reason for me to get a wood. Feel free to tell me why I’m wrong if you feel that way.
Alex... After watching your video, I now have a mystery that needs solving. I currently game the Ping G425 SFT fairway woods and unlike the 425 max, the SFT's come at a higher loft. (16 degrees for 3 wood 19 degrees for a 5 wood) So they follow your path of higher loft = good but now I want to drill down with this question for you. I also agree that it would be nice to rid myself of one of those two clubs so I could add another wedge to the bag but with those lofts that kind of go on either side of your 17 degree suggestion... should I... A. Keep one (either 3 or 5) and swap their shafts? The 5 wood is 1/2 inch shorter. Making my 3 wood a 16 degree loft with 5 wood length... or making my 19 degree a little longer shaft giving me more speed? Or B. Adjust the loft of the 19 degree down 1 1/2 degrees (ping allows for 1 1/2 degrees of loft adjustment either way) hitting that 17 1/2 degree loft?
Currently rocking a bag with no woods. I go down to a 4 iron at 22⁰ but I also have a 3 hybrid at 19⁰. I'm going to get a wood, your argument speaks to me... But is a 5 wood at 17.5⁰ to close to the hybrid 3???
Thanks for your explanation, I'm currently hesitating to buy a 3wood but after testing it I'm going to keep my 5w which is more easy to play. Excuse my English I'm French 😉
My 3 wood is actually 17 degrees and is the club I tend to use rather than driver. I can use it off the tee and off the ground and get consistent middle of the face contact.
I bought only one club this year, i.e. my newly beloved favourite, a Cobra SpeedZone 5-wood. No second thought whenever a long shot from the deck is mandatory. #100club
#100club. Alex, I carry a 3 wood and a 5 wood. I am going to try your idea and leave the 3 wood out for a while. The last clubs I bought were the 3, 4, 5 and 6 hybrids. I'm working on trying to whittle them down to just using 2 of them. Still a work in progress. Thank you.
Alex I've been wondering which one to buy myself after watching this what is your thoughts on the Cleveland 3+ hywood.. It should be the perfect in between?
It is 6 of one half a dozen if the other for me I am going 3 Wood and 3 Hybrid for the simple reason the loft on the 3 Hybrid is pretty close to the 5 Wood anyway I don't have much issue hitting the 3 Wood off the deck anyway
Hi Alex , I bought a 3 hybrid with 20” loft. Would you still recommend getting a five wood too , as the loft will be very close. Currently using 10.5 driver and then irons start at 6 - to SW.

I bought only one club this year, i.e. my newly beloved favourite, a Cobra SpeedZone 5-wood. No second thought whenever a long shot from the deck is mandatory. #100club
Lovely in thank you for sharing
#100 club The last club I ordered was a Ping G425 4 hybrid, can’t wait for it (and the irons) to arrive!
How are you finding the golf club?
Cobra F9 3 wood. Hitting it better and better!
Lovely - do you use it if the tee and the fairway
@@AlexElliottGolf yes sir. A bit more successful off the tee though haha
5w is 18*. Loft is friend. What big difference in a half degree. My 5w is only a half inch shorter.
Thank you.
Hi blaze let me know how you get on
Good video Alex 👍 definitely looking to purchase a 5 wood next 😎
Love it Dion!!!!
Always use a 5 wood. Need all the help I can get
Yes yes yes how much easier is this to hit
Looking back on this video.. is this why the "mini driver" is becoming the new alternative choice for mid to low handicap golfers 🤔🤔🤔
Good video
What do you think about shaft flex on fairway clubs? If I have stiff on driver, should I use the same on a 5 or 3 wood?
Hmm i’ve seen it work and help, especially on 5 wood
Just choke down on a 3W and have the versatility of both?
Wilson Launch Pad 2
Fybrid 19 degree
5 wood as I turned 80 so good by driver
Alex, what do you think? Between my Cobra SZ 5-wood and my 4-iron, a Cobra F9 22° utility like the Cobra F9 Hybrid would do?
Hmmm this is a difficult
One what’s the difference in distance between 5 wood and hybrid?
Alex I've been wondering which one to buy myself after watching this what is your thoughts on the Cleveland 3+ hywood.. It should be the perfect in between?
Yes 🙌🏼 I would go for a 3HL OR 3+ over a normal 3 wood but remember this will
Still be a longer shaft
Very interesting video
I hope it
Helps you
Wish I would have seen this video before getting my 3 wood cobra radspeed!! Oh well.
It is 6 of one half a dozen if the other for me
I am going 3 Wood and 3 Hybrid for the simple reason the loft on the 3 Hybrid is pretty close to the 5 Wood anyway
I don't have much issue hitting the 3 Wood off the deck anyway
The amount of holes in this logic is overwhelming! 😂 I’d gap my wedges better to carry a 5 wood before ever dropping the 3 wood.
i bought a second hand TM Stealth 3 & 5 Hybrid
How did you find them?
The 2 hybrid is about the same as a 5 wood….possibly even more consistent
#100 60 degree wedge
Hi Alex , I bought a 3 hybrid with 20” loft. Would you still recommend getting a five wood too , as the loft will be very close. Currently using 10.5 driver and then irons start at 6 - to SW.
No I would stick with what you got there for now - but maybe think about it as the 5 wood will be a bigger head an fab slightly longer shaft
Most amateur struggle to get to the greens, holding the green is not often a problem if short….
True, but a better store with height often goes longer
I love my Callaway X Hot 5 woods
Sometimes it's went 220m leaving all my friends behind 😂
Putter KS1
Driver PXG
My Last Golf Club was a 5 Wood 😺
Lovely what brand frank?
