I Regret Buying This Rooftop Tent (Roofnest Condor Overland)

- Around a Year ago I was searching for my first rooftop tent on marketplace and came across the lightly used roof nest Condor overland tent.
After using it for almost a year now the flaws in the design have become very apparent to me. Its biggest downside is camping in the rain.

Just FYI, you deployed the ladder incorrectly. The extra, unextended rungs are supposed to be at the top. Plus the ladder isn’t supposed to be vertical. It’s supposed to be at an angle. Doing these two things would solve your ladder complaints 😎
This.👍
Thank you , this was very helpful
Thanks for the honest review. I’m back to looking for a wedge style.
As a solo traveler your complaints make sense. For a large family like ours the wedge tents are too small. Coming from a backpacking background it’s very normal to camp in a wet tent and pack a wet tent. There isn’t a perfect tent (we’ve been searching for years) but a tent good enough for what you need.
TopOak bro!! Just got mine in and its fabulous!!!
Yea I’ve heard good things about that tent with a very reasonable price!! Might have to check them out!
Thinking more of TopOak as well but isn’t it also a pop out as well as this Roofnest? How is yours holding up in the rain and the same leak issues?
That's exactly why I got a wedge style. As simple as possible and fast open/ closing. Found the Heyfun RTT for $1074 with tax and free shipping. Similar to the Naturenest everyone is reviewing. Hopefully Roofnest will hook you up free or a discount price. 🤞
How is the heyfun holding up? Im on my search for my 1st rooftop tent.
@JAYKOSTRANSPORTLLC so far so good. Hasn't been on Jeep that long but seems good quality. There's an extra felt pad between anticondensation pad and rubber texture floor and comes with extra rain awning to switch out if you want. Arrived in a wood crate with metal edges not cardboard like some. I'm pretty happy. If your over 6' 2" you might want the kind that pops up 12" in front also for more foot or head room.
The issues resulting in the material and mattress getting wet are really significant. Especially for a tent as expensive as this one, as you said. Really appreciate this review!
I glad I could bring some insight! With how much money these tents are issues like this can feel like more than just a nuisance!
love the insight, thank you once again
Having used this same tent for a few years now, I can agree that the entry does pool water but, a lot of your other points aren't necessarily an issue with the Roofnest but all tents of this style in general. The ladder, you just need to store the unused rungs at the top and you'll be good.👍
Some thoughts.
In comparison, I bought my Tuff Stuff Alpha 2 for the same reasons. Best desl I could find at their introductory price.
Your ladder. I'm assuming we have the exact same ladder. You're adjusting it incorrectly. With the ladder is fully extended and locked, you start adjusting with the top rung. It won't go up all the way until you unlock the second rung. Then adjust from there, working your way Down each rung.
One other input. As far as how you fold this. I have found that I first flip my rain fly, like I'm waving a flag horizontally, flipping all the wet off it. I fold my tent while holding the fly so it does not fold inside the tent. This helps cover it to help any wet from dropping into the tent. I then wave it a few more times to shed as much wet as I can, then let it lay over the ladder as I pull down the top.
Ive never had acsingle water issue with my alpha 2.
I also will ditch my bifold and go for a much simpler wedge style.
While you're waiting to get your new tent, get a telescoping tent pole to push up the center of your tent while not in it. Then you won't have to keep checking it.
I have the exact same tent, and exact same complaints, so your spot on in my opinion. I'm also looking to go wedge style also.
Inspired has the soft shell light weight wedge tent. Might be an option for you! Or the carbon fiber
you don't have to play with the ladder height. Set it where the tent is slightly elevated where you climb in, and then just slide the ladder bottom away from the vehicle which only increase the angle by a small amount. I had one of these and I never had to dick around with the ladder like that. It looks to me like you beat the crap out of your gear so in my opinion I don't think any tent would stand up to that. When you have a tent like this you definitely sacrifice quick drying for larger interior space. I think you are kind of a whiner, but I am definitely a whiner too about my gear so I get it. Thanks for pointing out a few additional items for me to consider.
Well I just got a new tent and the ladder isn’t an issue at all now, it’s most defiantly this latter in specific that has been a major issue. I use my gear my I’m definitely not rough on it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I bought a Go Overland Canada expedition mini earlier this year which is basically the same style of tent as this one.
I decided against a wedge style tent because
1) I am over 6 foot and wanted the extra room
2) I love being able to still take off the freedom panels and leave bedding inside the tent.
So far I love it and no complaints. But I have not tried it out in heavy rain - I’m curious if I’ll run into similar issues
I hope it doesn’t have the same issues in the rain, do you plan on doing much camping in harsh weather or just plan around the nicer days?
Also being able to take the freedom panels off in the summer is a massive bonus that I will really miss if I switch to a wedge tent
@ the majority of my camping definitely happens in the summer but I plan on camping all year round. So we shall see how it goes haha.
Yea I love taking the panels off it’s the best!!
You should defs checkout Go Overland Canada. They have all styles of tents for fair prices and have been super nice to deal with
Hey man just a tip if you're looking to replace it- I live in SLC, and both my parents and I have built rigs for camping. Most of our gear is from 23Zero, but something we found out is they fairly often have open box or trade show items they sell only in person at their warehouse. There may be other companies close to you that do something similar, most often you have to specifically call and ask if they have stuff like that as they wont advertise it- we got my parents RTT brand new for almost 50% off, only used at 1 trade show. I got a 270 awning for 59% off, same deal, brand new.
That really sucks re the tent flaws. I wouldnt be happy either. I have a Tacoma and i just got the ikamper skycamp mini 3 and i love it. I use 7" silicone frisbees for my ladder feet to rest on to keep them as clean as possible. Sounds like you would be better off with a cheap amazon wedge tent.
Yea as far as similar style I’d tents the Ikamper skycamp lineup looks so much better. I know afew people with them and they have no issues beading water off properly!
I have the smittybilt xl only used in the rain once, it does have some of the same problems, but I think it’s the trade off of that style. Wedge style tents are too small for my needs personally.
I’m looking at the Openroad wedge. They have a standard, and a light version which is about 60 lbs (27kg) lighter.
Great info, thanks.
Not a problem thanks for watching 🤙
Very helpful overview. Rain is pretty much guaranteed on any trip where I live, so design that prevents water ingress is a major factor. I'm also 6'2" tall, so roominess is also a primary consideration. Did any of your buddies have a setup that seemed to check all the boxes well? What gear did you end up "wishing you had" after seeing what others are running on their rigs in the rain?
Pretty much everyone I wheel with have a wedge tent of of all price ranges and they all stay dry and have no issues, the only other piece of gear I want to the rainy weather in an awning. Tying up a tarp at every camp on a bad weekend is vey time consuming
@LetsGetLost. Thanks! We have a friend who has a setup with an awning on his Gladiator and he absolutely swears by it. Very useful in hot desert areas for shade also.
The condor overland is the WORST RTT I've owned. Leaked.. held water.. heavy.. shit mattress.. I now have the FSR Aspen lite.. not perfect but WAAAAY better
To be honest, this is not really only an issue with the condor, but every collapsing/multi folding hard shell or soft shell roof top tent.
mine had issues with water leaking through the metal panels on the roof, didnt notice till I tried going camping a month after winter ended only to find all my bedding coated in mold
Oh god that’s terrible!! What did you do ?
@@LetsGetLost. I tried resealing it several times, never quite worked. The final straw was when it got severely damaged in a hail storm. Sold it for pennies and replaced it with a freespirit rec tent. For how much roofnest charges, it should be higher quality tbh
@@Brightwoodphotos oh I completely agree !! You expect a higher quality at that price point !
You gotta know when to role them, know when to show them.
It's too bad the tent company cannot build a turtle shell. What I mean by that is once you pop it open all the sides are of a light metal that repels rain and let snow drain. It would need some kind of canvas or new type of plastic material to allow it to fold in on itself but once opened it is a secure non seeping non dripping container. Again a turtle shell maybe the top should not be square or flat but round it. Back in the old days they used to make military cups that you can open and collapse kind of like the James Bond opening title song with the camera lenses scene it collapses and then opens.?
There are actually afew companies that make exactly what your describing! They are just very heavy and expensive
