I think you would enjoy The Void, now that is a demented place running on sideways logic, beautiful and sad at once, some designs being true nightmare fuel and the challenge putting full accountability on the player. Its such a unique and creative experience.
Another great review. I had already played the game before watching your video and pretty much felt the same way. Also, in the first act, when you solve the egg puzzle, you can take him to 2 different rooms. The further room has a saw and it keeps him alive rather than killing him. However, to my disappointment, it didn't affect anything later on in the game. It would have been nice if it did. But it was nice having that choice, but then why give that choice if it doesn't affect the game itself? Sort of like the 3-button puzzle you attempted to place out of order. And of course, the save points are a major issue. I do know if you quit the game in the middle of something, it will (most of the time) take you right back to where you left off, but I have had a time when that didn't happen and was taken back to the previous save point, losing progress from one of the puzzles that frustrated me. So glitches do detract from the game. Definitely wait for a sale though.
I recommend a small/short (4 hours on 1st play even with dying alot and and getting lost) indie game called "Redo!" its a metroidvania but its very compact and has a strong survival horror vibe with stretegic combat and platforming alongside a very thick gloomy atmosphere.
Same, but in later sections I started getting frustrated with the combat because It's significantly harder to aim so I switched back to mouse and keyboard.
Yeah I’m not sure what people were thinking to recommend this to you. I will say that I have been absolutely in love with the world they have built. After reading the art book and piecing everything together it has become one of my favorite universes in terms of games. I see it as looking at a painting and going “What would it be like to be able to walk around in that picture?” and then create an entire world out of it. It’s absolutely fascinating to me regardless of lackluster gameplay, it serves its purpose.

@@freshnesbro3792 Lol you clearly don't know anything about art, an in actuality the development cycle was actually 2-3 years btw. The full development took play over 8 years but they only got a bigger team a few years ago and they had to completely remake the game. So it was made in 2-3 years.
@@xx_amongus_xx6987 You wanna tell 3 years for 5 hours of walking is good lmao? Spiderman Ps4 was finished in 3 years, what is your point, the team was mismanaged, or just not capable enough to deliver the game om time that's it.
@@freshnesbro3792 Are you really trying to compare a small indie studio's first game to a AAA game made in conjunction with Sony's teams? And yeah 3 years for 5 hours of walking is pretty good, especially with the amount of unique assets and the quality of those assets within Scorn. How else do you think this stuff works? Movies take years for maybe 2 hours of content. Books take years for a few hours of content. Games take even longer than both of these mediums to create. Scorn's team could have easily copy/pasted their assets in order to stretch the game time by a few hours like every other game- but would you really want that? Most people appreciate that Scorn ends when it wants to end, it isn't interested in wasting your time with content you've already done before.

I absolutely agree on there needing to be more puzzles or just... content of some kind, though. Puzzles... especially a few from Act 3 through 5, deserved to get used more. The Switch mechanic bothers me, as it's shown as a keybind through the whole game (I assumed it was weapon-switching, which bothered me since it "never worked"), then we FINALLY get to use it at the end in a cool revalation of what the mechanic is... and you only solve one puzzle that's almost identical to the door from the start of the game with it. Add a couple more self-cooperative puzzles and (someone else said this, but I really like the idea) have it end after you DO get through the portal-looking thing, revealing that everything through there is destroyed, and THEN let the parasite do its thing (instead of being a complete cop-out). Combat definitely could've been used a bit earlier, and enemy groups/types could've been done better. Maybe sprinkle in some of the weaker penguin-like enemies BEFORE the heavier spitters are introduced (those'd be pushed to later), since they can actually be taken out fairly easy with the starting weapon, and add a bit more of the hanging tentacle ones in positions where if you ran out of ammo, you actually _would_ be forced to weave past or take damage. Also, add a flying type (it was even teased in Act 3) that stops when it goes to shoot at you, or maybe even dive bombs towards you to knock you back, leaving it open to an easy one-shot kill even with just the Puncher weapon.. Make combat a bit more puzzle-like and more integral. The fourth weapon, the Grenade Launcher, also definitely needed more time to shine, ESPECIALLY before the parasite forces it to merge with your arm. I mean, there's even a button to switch to it like the other three weapons! There's probably some cut content relating to it considering all the stuff in the art book... To solve solve the save system, I think they should split the later acts up similarly to the first two, maybe even increase the length (like I assume it was originally intended) of the last two with more content to feel more... eventful? Really interesting to see your opinion on this one Mayo. Have you considered trying Hedon? I think you might like it given what you've said about Scorn.
I've been waiting for this game since 2016. I was so mesmerized by the trailers! They gave me nightmares of that fleshy world. It was really personal. Since not really much was revealed until the very release of the game, I came up with all the different ideas about it, and that really hurt my experience with the actual game. I generally thought Scorn would dive deeper into ecosystem puzzles. Like, you have these ant-like creatures that hunt you and block your path. So you go and kill 3 ant dudes to collect their biomass, then you go to some womb machine and develop and anti-ant creature to clear the way. Later, when that creature kills too many ants, you realize that ants consumed toxic fumes coming from that factory and now the air is getting poisoned every minute... I feel like the wait and the mystery around the game made my expectations too high. The fact that Scorn is just alright and not a masterpiece makes me so disappointed
Under The Mayo you once responded to my comment and said a main reason you disliked Dark Souls was because you didn’t enjoy exploring depressing worlds. I’m not one of those elden ring haters but I was wondering what made you enjoy this depressing world in comparison to Dark Souls? To me this game was by far the most depressing world I’ve ever explored in a game. I agree with this video though the survival horror was so good in this game it made me so ready for re4 and dead space remake.
The grotesque and shocking nature of Scorn doesn't make it feel depressing to me. It feels oppressive, unwelcoming, and disgusting. It's also about gameplay context. Creature design, combat style, everything that you are actually doing in the game. All of that contributes to how the world feels. I talked about that a bit in my A Plague Tale Innocence video.
@@underthemayo Ok that makes sense. It’s also a lot shorter of a game as well. 6-15 hours is a lot more double then 120 hours. I read somewhere that the director of Elden Ring said that since Elden Ring is so massive having the whole world be oppressive wouldn’t work. In my opinion however the game still felt about the same. Some green fields doesn’t really do the trick for me when they literally have a hell looking zone full of Berzerk enemies. The 8-15 hours previous games are alot better in my opinion.
I thought I was the only one who didn't mind the combat in this game. I'm glad I'm not alone on that one. I do also agree with your criticism of the game, however, my personal gripe with it was its length. I don't judge games based on length, but this one was just too short and it put me off wanting to replay it. It needed to be at least twice the length it was for me to have felt satisfied.
Luckily with my try of Scorn I played it on Game Pass when it's currently offered for free if you have an account and membership on Game Pass. I completed my playthrough of Scorn this morning after playing to for four days and unlocked all achievements making it my seventh game on Game Pass to earn a 1000 out of 1000 Gamerscore on. Interesting atmosphere with everything including your weapons being primarily fleshy!
To be fair combat in scorn is 100% optional I've found only the large Cow like monsters seem to be mostly unavoidable. Almost all other monsters will eventually crawl off into the walls and dissappear. Scorn is also a stealth game if you want it to be
I see you liked slow paced survival horror games so....I wanna know your opinion about The Evil Within games (please make a video of it). Great content as always 🙂
It's make me remember when I play old resident evil games, there's no shooter, the combat is not as satisfying as the modern resident evil and just there to make you managing your resources, but that's make the older resident evil games more scary for me
Actually, I've watched alot of his doom eternal vids and whole heartedly enjoyed them. As soon as he starts doing game reviews, is where he falls apart. Fun fact: you're allowed to criticize the critic...
I felt the same in the puzzle part. I'm typically a "problem-solving" type instead of a "solution-finding" type, preferring a puzzle to not have a specific solution, but present to me an actual problem, let me solve it in my own way, like those Zachtronics puzzles. Scorn's puzzles are basically not in this category - they clearly have "correct", pre-designed solutions. But they still stand on a good balance point, not breaking the incredible immersion of the environment with too much "puzzle cliche", and some solutions are pretty neat too, finding them is not boring.
It still is relatively non-linear. Personally, I wish we got that original content, while not hurting the game's length. It takes a bit too long until the game's levels and problem-solving gets really interesting. I think the length is perfect, I just wish those great parts were introduced earlier. I wonder if we'll get that content back via expansion or something like that.
@@theblobconsumes4859 tell me how it is non linear? Except for the prologue we don't have any choices anywhere else in the game, it does not impact the story or the gameplay at all.
It gets a 4/10 for the amazing Giger-esque art, but gameplay (or lack thereof) means it doesn't get any higher than a below average/poor game. Microsoft simply can't produce good exclusive games for Xbox anymore it seems.
Good video Mayo. I played the game, finished it but I didn't like it. What is this game? Is it a puzzle game? Not really. Is it an action game? Not really. Is it a walking simulator like Layers of Fear? Not really. This game tries to be several things but fails to establish itself on each of the segments. And the story? I don't know, this game feels like a long demo/DLC of something that should come out this year. But the graphics are pretty good. Like in most games made in 2022. But great video. 👍
Yeah it's a weird one. It does a few different things but doesn't do any of them spectacularly well. I feel like it just doesn't them kinda okay. And those kinda okay elements mixed with the art and the easily digestible duration left me happy enough with it.
This game would be perfect as crpg, like Planescape:Torment. Devs overpromised, underdelivered and I can't say I fully blame them because of lack of experience - but crafting this world would be a lot easier as crpg. And probably a longer and more flashed out experience.
They're very different experiences. Scorn is a dark grotesque linear game with occasional puzzles and survival horror combat. Outer Wilds has you repeating the same world every I dont remember how many minutes while exploring the world to figure it out. It's a different world and aesthetic and gameplay experience. It just didh't resonate with me. I'm sorry for not personally enjoying a game that you like. I'm sure it's great.
Remember to go to the dentist. And while you're waiting in the lobby, maybe play some Case of the Golden Idol. It's kind of a detective game, but it's text based and you have to prove your understanding of still life scenes in these bite size point-and-click stylized puzzles. About 10 hours long, in my top 5 games. If you enjoy that, then go for Return of the Obra Dinn by Lucas Pope.
DO NOT KILL THOSE CREATURES!!! This game is so much better when you try to avoid them. I have finished it killing only those three at the end and didn't die even once. I believe this is the intended way to play, at least it feels like it.
Watched some footage of this. It's so fucked up. I wanna say it's not that bad, but it's so fucked up. The detail and sound effects is what makes it so effective. I don't "like" HR Giger stuff, and yet I can't stop looking at it. There is the oddest serene zen feeling to the environments here--the disturbing gore and death and torture not withstanding. Massive massive props to the graphics team here!! LOL the dentist tangent 😂😂
The only other game I've seen with a similar atmosphere and world is Tormentum Dark Sorrow. Not as a gameplay centric but is really well made with good puzzles. Definitely worth checking out if you don't mind point and click.
I love the look and...well lore (thats only in the artbook) of this game. One thing I really like is that you really arn't meant to fight any enemies. If you back off and wait the enemies will leave the area, which is kinda unique. They want to be left alone. I know a lot of people hated the ending, but after really paying attention I took the ending as kinda a good one. You could interpret that your character "ascended" into the parasite's shell....which is what these people's end goal is. IDK it really gave me oddworld vibes, which I'm always happy to have.
Me personally,I don't like scorn. It is because it is just WAYY too gory. But here is the thing. I like doom eternal and Doom 2016. But not scorn. Why? It's because dooms gore is more cartoon-ish and it's not always there. So you can just chill and witness the beautiful surroundings. But scorn on the other hand, has too much gore and is way to realistic. And it needs more color in the atmosphere. Also, under the mayo, you have terrible taste in video games.
Mayo, have you played dino crisis? I'm a huge fan of classic survival horrors and dino crisis has the best puzzles BY FAR. Check it out if you haven't.
i feel like the only part this game fails on is level design, like the art direction is there, the sound design is there, even the combat, although basic works. just needed someone capable of making a well paced and engaging set of events, combat and puzzles in a level.
I dont know why they couldn't incorporate more puzzles.. compared to the room or myst games it feels lacking. So much was cut from this game though, I hope they make a directors cut.
Please play God Hand, I want to see what your opinion on the gameplay is. But I do hope you have a PS3 to play, or a ps2, else you'd have to emulate it
Godhand is on a long list of games I'd love to play someday. But I'm not gonna start announcing when. I won't be able to stick to it. I play what I'm in the mood for or else I won't experience it right.
Cool, it's nice to see I share similar opinions as Under The Mayo. Also being a big Doom Eternal fan and yet quite enjoying the slow, punchy, clunky combat with limit ammo and amazing aesthetics. Also a friendly reminder @under the Mayo, don't forget to book in your regular Dentist appointment.
I love Alpha demo more. It started as a game, and turned into pretentious POS. Microsoft is somewhat to blame. Game is cobbled together in less then two years and they scrapped a lot of the ''game'' and changed sooo much to meet xbox x standards. There is honestly too much details everywhere (textures). ''Less is more'' sometimes. And enemies in demo were better too.
I feel like the clunkiness of combat is fine the way it is. You go into the game just as capable and confused as SCORNguy. I personally see the game more as an art piece than a game. But I'm sure the biggest complaint that everyone has about the game is that we need more game to play.
I think on April fools you should mess with that crowd that think you want EVERY game to be Doom Eternal and make a review where you start complaining when the game doesn’t have something related to Doom Eternal. Like “Why isn’t their a meat hook like weapon in Resident Evil 1? 0/10 BAD GAME!”
They should just give you a machete instead of that penetrator 10000, and make a game focused entirely on melee with destructible enemies to show off that gore, with good physics and feedback from them. Just like how dying light 1 did, the most visceral and satisfaying melee combat, not even its sequel could match that melee.
Dentada for nada go see a dentist, for your health Been waiting for this one, it was nice to hear you say you enjoyed the puzzles in this one. Scorn is another one of those games that falls into the short, but sweet category. This, Shadow Warrior 3 and Lost in Vivo all have a pretty short run time, but end just at the right moment, before the game gets stale or repetitive. I got it on a sale for 10% off but to anybody else, you could wait for a better deal.
I'm gonna be honest, this was pretty much the worst game I've played this year I just hate it. (Combat: terrible. (Atmosphere: pretty good. (Art: great. (Survival horror: nonexistent because (the enemies just run away. (Exploration: shit. (Puzzles: meh. (Story: none really. (Gore: personally it was lame and "so edgy", but objectively it was pretty good I'd give this game a shit/10 if I could, and go to the dentist

TLDR: It was mid
"It's like the doom eternal of weird cool disgusting games", Under The Mayo probably.
What i do is have the end of scissor on the shift and add weight on the handle. 🤷♀ Keeping it pressed down .
im so sorry mayo about silent hill 2. I feel the pain.
It's make me remember when I play old resident evil games, there's no shooter, the combat is not as satisfying as the modern resident evil and just there to make you managing your resources, but that's make the older resident evil games more scary for me
Is anybody else surprised that mayo didn't compare this to doom eternal or said he only sees brown and yellow? Completely scared the shit outta me...
The people who are surprised about that are have only watched like 4 mayo videos total.
Actually, I've watched alot of his doom eternal vids and whole heartedly enjoyed them. As soon as he starts doing game reviews, is where he falls apart. Fun fact: you're allowed to criticize the critic...
@@HagVirus fun fact game critic doesn’t compare ever game to doom eternal.
Iunno about that buddy... He's done that with overkill, and he's whole heartedly enjoyed shadow warrior 3 cause it's basically a doom eternal clone.
I can't provide an example for those games aforementioned cause I've never played them LOL...
Sadly it doesn't have a infinite ammo pistol
The jackhammer thing kinda takes that role.
I played it because it was on gamepass and I think it nails the atmosphere and the creepiness that wants to show but in general, it was ok.
This game was supposed to be non linear and had multiple endings and a morality system too.
Also this game was scrapped off by 90% in 2020 and remade.
I learned I have a gore limit.
LOL yeah I can usually handle a lot but for some reason Scorn's execution really got to me
It gets a 4/10 for the amazing Giger-esque art, but gameplay (or lack thereof) means it doesn't get any higher than a below average/poor game. Microsoft simply can't produce good exclusive games for Xbox anymore it seems.
5:46 - how about sightseeing? 🤔
Letting yourself immerse into the world?
Speaking in terms of gameplay. If you wanna be able to slow down and look at the world, turn the run button into a walk button.
And probably a longer and more flashed out experience.
didnt expect such a positive review.
I think a good part of it is the length. If it had been 15 hours of this and it didn't raise to any new heights, I probably would have soured on it.
@@underthemayo very true. I only got through the first level and part of the urge to keep playing is knowing that it's not a 10 hour title.
You enjoyed this but Outer Wilds is a walking simulator that you couldn't get into? Did you quit after 10 minutes?
They're very different experiences. Scorn is a dark grotesque linear game with occasional puzzles and survival horror combat. Outer Wilds has you repeating the same world every I dont remember how many minutes while exploring the world to figure it out. It's a different world and aesthetic and gameplay experience. It just didh't resonate with me. I'm sorry for not personally enjoying a game that you like. I'm sure it's great.
Can you give Cruelty Squad a try? Im sure you'll have many interesting thoughts about it, like the artstyle and the stock market.
"Its like a decent version of Alien Isolation"
Remember to go to the dentist. And while you're waiting in the lobby, maybe play some Case of the Golden Idol. It's kind of a detective game, but it's text based and you have to prove your understanding of still life scenes in these bite size point-and-click stylized puzzles. About 10 hours long, in my top 5 games. If you enjoy that, then go for Return of the Obra Dinn by Lucas Pope.
10:20 what comes to mind is the perplexus
This game is what Prometheus should have been.
Prometheus could have been way shorter, say, 0 hours.
Prometheus is an absolute masterpiece btw
@@chaTzon Uh by the way, I disagree
I missed the gun, so i did the whole game without the gun because there is no 2e change to get it later in the game
First time i hated alien isolation by long pacing in the game but even then once you meet xeno game begins and had pretty good mechanics to deal with.
Ironically the first gun works great for final boss.
Scorn is also free on gamepass for anyone interested
Have you ever played Outer Wilds? If not, I recommend it.
Mayo, have you played dino crisis? I'm a huge fan of classic survival horrors and dino crisis has the best puzzles BY FAR.
Check it out if you haven't.
Sadly I just played the demo as a kid. I want to go back and play it.
Yeah, on deep discount.
i feel like the only part this game fails on is level design, like the art direction is there, the sound design is there, even the combat, although basic works. just needed someone capable of making a well paced and engaging set of events, combat and puzzles in a level.
I dont know why they couldn't incorporate more puzzles.. compared to the room or myst games it feels lacking. So much was cut from this game though, I hope they make a directors cut.
Please play God Hand, I want to see what your opinion on the gameplay is. But I do hope you have a PS3 to play, or a ps2, else you'd have to emulate it
He already said he will.
@@ScileSc When? I genuinely didn't know
@@bigboi9767 In a comment from the Vanquish video.
Godhand is on a long list of games I'd love to play someday. But I'm not gonna start announcing when. I won't be able to stick to it. I play what I'm in the mood for or else I won't experience it right.
Its a playable Beksinski painting and i love his art so i really enjoyed the game, i never took so many screenshots in any other game.
Good stuff Mayo
So how did the dentist appointment go Mayo? Lol
Good. Sanded down the broken edge.
You ever heard of In Sound Mind? It's a pretty cool horror game and I am not even big on pure horror titles.
Small correction; Adventure game, not walking sim.
If you Mayo want to experience the worst gaming torture try "Layers of Fear"....
Oh I already have.
@@underthemayo And what did you think?
I feel like the clunkiness of combat is fine the way it is. You go into the game just as capable and confused as SCORNguy. I personally see the game more as an art piece than a game. But I'm sure the biggest complaint that everyone has about the game is that we need more game to play.
Silent Hill 2 remake is confirmed to be a PS5 exclusive and a movie adaptation of Silent Hill 2 is confirmed as well. Just an FYI for those wondering.
It will come out both for PC and PS5 at the same time.
@@jake1988h It will be a PS5 exclusive for a year.
Silent hill 2 will be ps5 exclusive for 1 YEAR only. It will have a steam release.
Silent hill 2 will be a PS5 CONSOLE exclusive for a year but it will release in steam at the same time
It doesn't look promising either way
Too bad I'm still a last gen console peasant. Looking into getting a Meta PC though.
Still waiting for that Resident Evil 2 video.....
Last week of October.
@@underthemayo ah okay 👌
I've suggested it before but you gotta check out Rollerdrome, Mayo!
I predict... No likey
@Loner Stoner wrong he kinda of likes
@@redninja3056 wrong, you are a cherry pop-tart
I kinda likey. Not enough to make my best of the year list, probably.
At this point, 2 and a half years later, I think it's a tired joke.
@@underthemayo you right you right
Remember to go to the dentist, Mayo.
They should just give you a machete instead of that penetrator 10000, and make a game focused entirely on melee with destructible enemies to show off that gore, with good physics and feedback from them.
Just like how dying light 1 did, the most visceral and satisfaying melee combat, not even its sequel could match that melee.
For me I hate walking sims if the walking feels like trash
Mayo, you need to play Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout.
lot of black, grey and brown colors wouldn't you say?
Definitely. Luckily it's short so it didn't wear on me too much.
Hey Mayo, you should play Valfaris. You won't regret it!
Dentada for nada
go see a dentist, for your health
Been waiting for this one, it was nice to hear you say you enjoyed the puzzles in this one.
Yeah SW3 would have gotten less shit for the length if it hadn't been 50 bucks.
@@underthemayo Well the support they gave gave SW3 in the following months certainly softened the blow, I feel.
I'm gonna be honest, this was pretty much the worst game I've played this year I just hate it.
(Combat: terrible.
(Atmosphere: pretty good.
(Art: great.
(Survival horror: nonexistent because (the enemies just run away.
(Exploration: shit.
(Puzzles: meh.
(Story: none really.
(Gore: personally it was lame and "so edgy", but objectively it was pretty good
I'd give this game a shit/10 if I could, and go to the dentist
No double dash or grappling hook 0/10
What is the name of this beautiful music you use at the beginning ?
Re1 save room theme
Mayo should try Psychonauts 2.
Can you play the evil within 1/2 if you love resident evil than you will love this one
Underrated series
the ending of scorn is disturbing af

Not enough weapon swapping in this game
Thjs game is more Myst than survival horror.
Love the design. Picked up the book.
