I want to see EVERYTHING!! Everything that you have suggested. Sewing room tour, charity donations and things that you’ve passed onto your mum. I think your plans for a clear out and reorganisation are a perfect start to the new year. I tend to let things go to a point that it’s annoying me, then I have a big sort out. I find it very cleansing and it definitely declutters the mind. Good luck!

I think its helpful to watch somebody go through the process of reevaluating their wardrobe, curating their closet and sewing more intentionally going forward. I think its a great way to be less wasteful and more aware in terms of ones sewing too. I look forward to seeing your approach. Also I could use the inspiration to tackle my own closet and sewing room 😁

Yes please show everything, I like to be organised too. My New Years resolute is NOT TO BUY any fabrics, as I have so much, but it is very hard, and it’s only the beginning of January 😂😂. I was also ill over Christmas and the New Year. Feeling a bit better now. I’m knitting instead of sewing, that’s my mini break. Restart the sewing in February, ready for the summer holidays, take care see you soon❤

Having a clean out is really hard, but extremely helpful in so many ways. Its great that you can give some of your me makes to your Mum so you can still see them. It actually really fun to see me makes on someone else. For any others, remember you still keep all the lessons they taught you about fabric qualities, sewing techniques, fit & practcaities.
I find it easier to roll my fabrics and secure with a rubber band, then store in pull out baskets rather than folding and stacking on shelves. You can categorise the baskets any way you like to keep track of everything and still have the free feeling of chucking something in the basket or rummaging to get inspiration. Ths might be because I mostly do upcycled sewing and don't plan it ahead but wait for inspiration to hit.
Also I like to swap summer and winter clothes over in my cupboard twice a year an keep the wrong season in a big storage bag.
I am happy to watch any video you make. They are all so enjoyable. Good luck with your organising!

I’m so glad you’ve got rid of the lurge that you had! I think you’ve caused a light bulb moment for me!! Over Christmas and the New Year I have sewn absolutely nothing, I’ve made the excuse I want to finish a giant cross stitch - I’m fooling myself!!! I looked into my sewing room - it’s chaos!!! So - thank you Michelle, I’m going to take a leaf out of your book and get organised!!! I am one step ahead with my wardrobe, but only because of a water leak last year which meant a frantic emptying of the wardrobe before the leak flooded it, and I did organise myself when everything dried out!! Happy tidying and organising, look forward to seeing your immaculate sewing room!! 😺😽😽

A well deserved break, I'm sure. when I was a teenager I had a sewing teacher who insisted we clean up the area when we were finished, and that good advice has stayed with me. It makes such a difference when the sewing area is neat and tidy. Looking forward to your progress.

Funnily enough I’ve been sorting my sewing room today - I’d a ton of boxes I’d saved from when I got a Billy bookcase for my patterns, books and odds and ends. I’d sorted the top half you could see through the glass, but not the bottom half! 😛 I’ve a ton of toiling fabric. Stuff I got given, some duvets, curtains etc I got off Freegle or from charity shops. Trying to organise it all and have it separate from my main stash…

I've also cancelled my monthly fabric box, as it was becoming a bit overwhelming. I have enrolled in an online sewing course so hopefully, that will help me improve and get back into sewing.

I agree Michelle. I had a major wardrobe clear out at the end of last summer and some of that included me mades. I just wasn’t wearing them, nothing wrong with them but I’d just fallen into the trap of making the new must have pattern when they really didn’t suit my lifestyle.
I bought a new wardrobe for the spare bedroom and flip my summer/winter clothes too, so it doesn’t look as if I have too many 😂
I find that if I get disorganised in my sewing room, it stops me sewing.
Good luck with your transformation 😊

I’m with you, if my rooms in a mess that makes my headspace a mess, I lack inspiration and find it’s a recipe for losing my sewjo. I have to clear up and put away in between so that I know where things are and I have the space to spread out and enjoy my next project. I like to leave my sewing at a spot where I can pick up and go forward the next time I walk in, for example sleeves pinned and ready to insert and left right next to my machine. It’s psychological I guess, I sew 2 seams, hold it up and while I haven’t done much I feel really positive and can’t wait to get cracking through the next steps….. 😂 ❤️🌹

    • @SewingBunny

It’s good to take a step back, periodically, to reassess and reorganize your brain. Physically decluttering and reorganizing can truly help with the brain aspect.
I’d be quite interested in any part of your process that you might share.
Also, while it’s good to have a plan, give yourself full permission to deviate from it, including the timing of it, so it doesn’t become too much of a burden or chore. This is supposed to be fun, and if it’s fun for you, it will be fun for us.

Hi Michelle, I have started my sewing year by culling and decluttering. My sewing room became chaotic and untidy for different reasons than the ones you spoke about -but the result was the similar. I couldn't relax because there was mess around me. Although I was sad not to be creating, I feel it was worth the effort. I will enjoy any content you choose to share. Just a thought, doing Vlogmas is very labour intensive, then you were sick, so not be too hard on yourself for not tidying.

I seem to have spent more times trying to find things & items falling out all over my sewing room to the stage I didn't want to go in there let alone do any sewing, which is not like me. I really don't know how or why it has ended up in such a mess. I am in the midst of sorting it out, just like you. All the packing boxes from the rest of the house are being stored in there. This weekend we're taking our wardrobe and dressing table to the charity shop as our new home has fitted wardrobes. Sorry you suffered the bugs all over the holidays, such a buggy time of year isn't it.
Totally with you on the take stock, declutter and make room. I've been watching You Tubers on decluttering and minimalism, and it's great inspiration and encouragement.
Great idea to give yourself time and space. I'm doing something a bit similar, though I'm slow, so it will take us many months.
I will eventually have a sewing craft space, was going to be last year but due to husband and I taking in turns to be disabled and off our feet for months it didn't happen.
Not putting a time on it now, don't want to jinx it! But decluttering the house is our main aim, plus I really really must stop buying sewing supplies and fabrics till we're properly sorted! I'm really not helping the situation 🤦‍♀️ that's my goals for this year, get sorted! I’m so on board with you Michelle. My sewing space is shoe horned into my husbands office. We have a small 2 bed property after downsizing a few years ago. Hadn’t anticipated our adult son moving back home 4 years ago 🙈. You currently cannot see my desk for junk. Piles of fabric and patterns all over the place and I just don’t want to go in there. My son is moving into his own place hopefully end of march beg of April, why is it buying a property takes so long, even when it’s only a year old 🙄. At that point the second bedroom is destined to become my sewing room. I’m full of ideas and I can’t wait. Yes to all your suggestions for vlogs. I think what you're doing is a great idea as it'll be such a cleansing process and will get you back to where you need to be with your sewing. I'm taking a different approach to my sewing this year too as my wardrobe cannot fit anything else into it and I had to split my summer and winter clothes for the first time this year to make room. It did show I was lacking warm sweaters, so that's something I need to make more of and I'm also going to shop my stash and try to use patterns I already have! I'm not doing a list of what I want to make this year and no make 9 plans this year either, as I've failed 2 years running with that now! So I'm just going to plod along and make what I want and just to go with the flow. I also need some dressier items for when I get invited out to things! xx

I am currently on a plan to organize my sewing patterns to make it easier to know what PDF patterns I have purchased as many I do not print out until I need them.. the fabric will probably follow at a later date .. My husband and I share quite a small walk in closet with only 1 large and 1 small handing rod.. as many of my clothing items are foldable.. I decided to purchase several small shelving units which can be changed and stacked as needed.. this has made it much easier to organize my items so that I can see the type and color at a glance and they are not falling over as the "cubed" type shelves are the perfect folding width.. Thankfully I am able to store most of my dressier items and "long" items in my spare room closet. Enjoy your organizing process 😊

I'm glad you all are feeling better. Such a bummer to be sick over the holidays. I think your plan of organizing your sewing space is a great way to start the new year. Also looking at your wardrobe and seeing what is missing will help you figure out where your sewing focus should be. Best of luck with all that organizing. :)

Happy New Year ! totally understand to clear out rooms and wardrobes I do that every year to start the year fresh even with my kitchen cupboards, helps to clear mind, I think sewing during December that you done was so much anyway and sometimes sewing seems to become a production line of project after project like a chore you said, no need, you done cross stitch as well, see what you need and take your time. Self care in no.1, all the best Michelle x

I would very much like to see the process of your reorganisation. I empathise with that feeling that sewing is too much fun to waste time tidying when you could start a new project instead. So my sewing room has been worse than yours. It's a bit better now as I do periodically work at it and am trying to be better. I was also sick over Christmas and New Year and am now desperate to sew things and couldn't make myself stop a do days of organising, so am trying to do half an hour here and there. My main problem is not having good storage options so keen to get good tips on that front. Plus the fact that although I don't like untidyiness, I can tune it all out and just focus on what I am doing, which reduces the drive to tidy...

Morena Michelle. Happy New Year. Hopefully you're on the mend. Good idea about the re-set. I don't have a dedicated sewing room as such. I have set up a spare bedroom as my sewing space but it is one of our son's bedroom and if he and his partner come to visit I have to move things out of the way. I would love to have a room outside (one of my plans for the future) for my sewing but that is very much a long term goal and a luxury not a necessity. I had every intention of doing a lot of sewing over the holiday break but never did. I did however partially make a Sew Over It Oona dress. Got to the straps and realised it wasn't for me but all is not lost I am turning the bottom half into a skirt which I will get a lot of use out of. Looking forward to your 2023 videos. Take care. Ka kite.

Your Kalax unit looks a darn sight better than my sewing room floor!! 😂😂 I am in the process of doing the same - having a good sort out and chuck out. Still loads to do. Happy new year Michelle and best of luck with your plan. Its amazing what a good sort out and being organised can do emotionally and physically. After you have sorted your wardrobe, could you maybe sort your clothes into seasons? And vaccumm pack what you don't need out. It may help with choosing outfits and reaching for things.
