To all the people saying free weights work better, resistance is resistance. Your muscles do NOT know whether you are using bodyweight, free weights, bands etc. Muscles grows in response to stress via resistance to movement. It really doesn't matter how that resistance is achieved. In fact resistance bands can offer a much more consistent and cheat proof resistance for muscles growth. Terrell Owens is a wide receiver in the NFL and he swears by resistance bands. As long as the resistance is high enough (the old rules still apply, find the 1RM and work from there) then muscle will react.
+bobbypaycheque The issue is that the resistance curve with resistance bands is detrimental when building maximal strength. Dont get me wrong they are fantastic when used as an accessory lift but Weights are superior in almost every other category.
NDNguitarguy My experience is weights are great for dead lifts and situations where the weight is constant. For other exercises like curls, just for example, bands offer the more consistent resistance throughout the movement. If you are slack at the beginning you aren't using a high enough resistance band. With a free weight on a curl the resistance becomes less at the top of the movement. Kinda hard to explain in just text but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
+bobbypaycheque Again resistance bands are great for accessory exercises. What you are referring to is an example of force curve caused by leverage of the weight. Resistance bands just get hard in the end of the range of motion which make them a poor choice for any sort of maximal strength work. But for prehab and accessory work I absolutely love them.
NDNguitarguy Free weights are not consistent. They do not give the same amount of resistance at the top of a movement during a curl, they lack effectiveness depending on the structure of the movement. Essentially free weights simply rely on gravity, which isn't enough range if strength is the goal. I practice Judo, and almost everyone in Judo uses bands over free weights because high resistance bands round out strength better. Why? Because in Judo it is very unlikely I will have to apply my strength in a structured weight lifting posture. I need to build up 'imperfect' strength. High resistance bands let me start at tension of X lbs and the resistance will increase consistently throughout the motion regardless of my structure. This guy does BJJ and I totally get why he uses bands. If you want to look like a bodybuilder then use free weights. If you want to be wrestler strong use high resistance bands and resisting sparring partners. In a match you will never have perfect footing or perfect posture when you have to use your strength. Free weights are just that, for perfecting lifting heavy weights in a very specific way. Do a lift with free weights wrong and you wreck yourself because you have only built 'perfect' strength. Football players do a lot of resistance band work because they need that explosive power. Terrell Owens is a big proponent of resistance bands. It's really hard to get this across in typing, hoping you are understanding what I'm saying.
+bobbypaycheque All this arguing about which is better....jeez using ALL is better. They are all tools like a knife, fork and spoon. There are a lot of people that just want to get in shape, be it losing weight, getting some tone and firmness , and just getting fit. I see so many posts of people insulting bands and people who use them. There are many with back injuries and degenerated discs that just have issues with lifting barbells/dumbbells from joint pain. The goals are likely to be different as well if some guy is 19 yrs old and has the ambition to gain 20 lbs of muscular weight and another guy who might be 39 yrs old and might only want to lose 20 lbs and be more firm and feel better. I went thru that phase during my teens and early 20's of bench presses, squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, ect. If great strength and mass is what you're after, then the barbells and dumbbells are still the area to be in. Strictly using bands are more "fitness" oriented and have their place in the exercise world. What ticks me off are these, usually close-minded young bucks that think anyone into working out should do as they do and lift barbells/dumbbells and have the same bodybuilding or powerlifting goals just like them and when they come across others that don't, they want to low-rate them. What they fail to understand is that not everyone shares the same goals and priorities. Anyway, in June 2014 I ordered a set of Bodylastics and they suit my goals fine. I prefer the metal carabiner connectors that are on each end of every individual band. Between using them and a suspension trainer for bodyweight exercises, I not only look better but feel better. I'm pushing 40 and don't have the same workout routine as I had 20 yrs ago.I've been there and done that, I have nothing to prove.I'm more fitness and endurance oriented. There's nothing wrong with using bands.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your music choice after watching a number of exercise videos that I have to mute because the music is so awful. Thank you for this video!
Very informative and informational video. As someone with multiple joint issues using bands has been once of the best things I've found to help keep me active at the same time as reducing the pain/stress on my joints. Great job!!!
Never thought you could do so much with them. I think I need to get them. It is way better than the normal routine. Also when you start getting real good on certain muscle parts this gives you a new goal to reach everytime, just choose your goal!.
Excellent video! Just discovered the world of resistance bands after only knowing free weights all my life. I thought bands were for girls. Man was I wrong! I love working out and being in shape but not at the expense of my shoulder joints. On top of that, my new job has me on the road in hotel rooms over 50% of the year. Resistance bands and videos like this have renewed my excitement for physical fitness!
Bands are great for enhancing weight training too, if you have some weights at home but want more resistance, add bands! You`ll get progressive resistance too, which is good for extension strength. I have weights at home, but I almost only use bands..
Yes! Even adding some bands to a couple of 30lb dumbbells can be a killer. And there's some clinical evidence to suggest that enhancing weights with bands means more gains than either one alone. Even an increased 1RM. It just works.
Ive had a lot of problems with lifelineusa bands. I broke two 40 pound bands and two 70 lb bands. They also get worn quickly if you put them under your shoe for an anchor as he does in this video, but mine broke right by the handle.
Bought Bobby Hinds' jump rope in the 70's and his "Lifeline Gym" shortly after. Been using cables ever since -- for over 40 years. I called Lifeline to order an additional 80# cable one Saturday morning years ago and Bobby happened to pick up the phone. We had a nice chat and the conversation went to how we were working on some great looking cadavers! ☺ (I'm still at it! ) I have a gym membership, but I hardly ever go. It's too convenient to get my "gym bag" of cables and train wherever I might be. Never miss a workout (and the future "cadaver's" looking pretty good too!)
Explosive motion and static resistance can most certainly be achieved with "dead weight". To avoid having to argue with fanatics on either side I humbly present the notion....that everyone incorporates both. Constant tension does provide a very unique way to build strength and endurance in muscles but those bands will never activate the core in the specific way dead lifting a barbell will or in the way kettle-bell swings do. Aside from the sales-pitch bollocks and misinformation its a very underutilized method that should be incorporated into a well balanced program.
mzigg61 Yeah I'm with ya, too many guys just ignore the idea of the band, but adding it into your workout can really help, it really made my arms more defined and helped me work on specific areas I couldn't get at as easily with weights. Also, it's without question the easiest thing to travel with and I think can be used with weights for awesome results.
I don't argue much with what works. I have bands, but would love to know how to get the door attachment and such. I love kettle's, weights, machines... whatever seems to work... I also swim laps....
Another great option for a band set is Bodylastics Strongman warrior edition bands. You can stack up to 300 lbs. I love them I only payed 84$ on Amazon. Btw, I lol'ed at the pig farmer squats, such a awesome name lol.
Hi Darrin, looks like I get to make the first comment. This is a great video. I have been using bands for some time now and making great gains. I sometimes combine them with suspension training, or even some dumbell exercises. But, as you say, nothing else gives you the same contraction, or speed in changing the resistance by moving closer or farther. Thanks for sharing, Joel
Wow! Am i glad i bumped into ur channel, channel! Finally not some snot nosed kid millenial screaming come on bro you can do it! At 64 ill be looking forward to a mature person instructing me, 💪
I do my resistance bands training with the bike tubing. They can be free at the bicycle shops as recycled material. I wish I can make it more challenging, if only everything around my house is so much frail for resistance training.
I think of bands as a addition to weights or calisthenics. Bands can easily hit those small supporting muscles and seem easier on the tendons and ligaments. I might just be making up shit cause resistance is resistance, but still. I don't think you can replace olympic lifts or advanced calisthenic movements with bands.
Anyone notice in the first few seconds of the video, theres a red orb popping out of the bushes on his right shoulder( the left side from viewers prespective),take a look, the red orb pops out twice then goes back into the bushes. It's weird.
Thanks, Darrin, for the clear and informative explanation. I used to think that bands were, gimmicky, and "girlie", and ultimately ineffective. Wrong on all counts. I was born during Ike's administration, am currently semi-retired and drive a school bus. Vehicle driving jobs are high on the list of jobs that promote obesity and all the ills that go with a sedentary life style. Now I carry a band with me and find ever new opportunities to exercise during the frequent periods of dead time.
I like this system of stackable resistance Bands, the way the bands are closely locked in to your grip. Other systems are to loose and have like a double lenght textile handles. What is the brand of these bands ?
I use barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, leverbars, cables, plates only, Totalgym, Isometrics, calisthenics and Bands. Why limit yourself? They all work.
From personal experience I know it's wrong to duplicate weights exercises with bands. Also, bands are not to be done for reps - they are done for interval timing - that's how you get most of them. Mainly, they are to be used for people who want to improve functional power. I found that they way martial artists train them is the best way to get ripped. (plenty of workouts specifically for rubber bands on the net, do not dublicate weightlifting)
I saw during this video that he used different colored bands then the ones that come with the set.. Can you order different weight bands from the company?
Amazing video, thanks. So many tips in the demo. For instance, I never thought of changing body position as you did in the park to reduce resistance; sort of like drop sets at the gym. And I like how you put the door piece on the stronger hinge side of the door (as opposed to almost every other video that puts it on the open side). I'm going to get a set of bands. Thanks!
I just started using resistance bands for explosive power für boxing, I have resistance tube and loop band and they are doing fine for 10 workouts without any problem. I wonder how long they will last does anyone with experience have an idea?
If consistently used, about a few months to a year before the possibility of snapping but the trick I use to make last longer is armor all wipes. Some of my bands have lasted me years without wear and tear.
I notice that a lot of the movements are like explosive out and slow back to the resting point. Why is that? And yes, I am a noob nerd onlooker wannabe man in the respect that for the longest time I was afraid to admit ignorance and was thus locked into it. Now I ask questions and admit I just do not know, which gives me the freedom of actually learning some stuff from time to time.
there are two muscle types slow and fast muscle or endurance twitch. when one exercises using both types of muscle it creates a better work out and better muscle training.
As a general rule, to recruit as many muscle fibers as possible, you either need to be loading at 90% of your one rep max, or lifting at maximal speed. Since heaviest loads are harder with bands, speed is important. It's also important to train the recruitment of fast-twitch muscle fibers if you're involved with a sport which requires it.
body building is time under tension. the more time the muscle is stressed the more "damage" is done the more muscle you build, i.e. 10 reps at 5x5 cadence, 5 seconds down, 5 seconds up, takes momentum out of the movement, strength training on the other hand will build some muscle as well but its also training your neuro-muscular response, at higher percentages of your max i.e. 3 sets by 3 reps at 85% of your 1 rep max, you can do plyometrics to build explosive strength, i would recommended reading Timothy Ferris 4hour body and Jim Wendler 531 for more info
+mrs benedict cumberbatch I think so. get a full set of bands from very light to very high resistance. and just use common sense and don't over do anything. Start where you are and do what you can and ALWAYS clear it with your DOCTOR!
Hey i'm all for bands, hell I use them on/with my barbell exercises, but you claiming you can't get explosive power from weight training is silly. Olympic lifters and powerlifters both train for explosive power.. either way pretty cool stuff!
don't bands work in the complete opposite of a muscle's strength curve? as a muscle contracts its at its weakest while a band's resistance gets harder at this point. For a band to be ideal it should be hardest at the beginning and become easier through the muscle's strength curve. Similar to the idea of the nautilus camming mechanism that Arthur Jones came up with. I guess my point is bands are the complete opposite resistance from what is ideal. Am I wrong?
Hello Mr. Crowder, I watched your video and since then i was looking for the kind of bands you showed in the video in which you can use multiple bands at once but i was not able to find those. If possible please send me the link from where i buy kind of your's bands and thank you for the video it is really helpful.
+Vikram Shivhare It's called the Lifeline TNT Cable System. Here's the link for their website: www.lifelinefitness.com/store//products/ProductDetail.php?ProductID=687 It currently indicates their sold out so you might want to call them to see when they'll be back in stock. There's a seller on Amazon selling it for over $70 but don't pay that. I hope this helps. Cheers.
Only if you are willing to go full out because that could be expensive there are good ones without handles at al there are ok ones that come with a handle my came with a handle that you can not remove and it snapped but I tied it in a Russian seal tie it will never snap again
Dont underestimate resistance bands..they work..they are great..the give you shape..build muscle and burn fat...they are fun and effective..free weights can get real old n boring and can cause injury..bottom line resustance bands are great..and bobylastics are the best.ones on the market
Namely there's no moment of weightlessness to create an impact. Think of overhead pressing explosively. If you don't thumb-wrap that bad boy you could literally throw the barbell out of the room. With bands it would remain glued to your hands all day. If forces an acceleration not seen with weights that can't be cheated. Also, as a general rule, the tension with bands is lightest where people tend to be biomechanically weakest (picture the bottom portion of a press, squat, bench etc.) So this allows a maximally heavy load to be applied at the point in the movement where the most force could be applied, while eliminating torque in weakened positions.
StevenCrowder Thanks for the reply. I can see how eliminating the momentum on presses would help prevent injury. But doesn't the decreased tension at the weakest point of the lift defeat the idea of a compound lift? Let's take the squat for example: If you have less tension at the bottom you get less glute and core activation making the movement very quad-dominant.
PeterPwn! No. Sure, you may have less resistance at the bottom, but it's not NO resistance. Most people don't squat well below parallel to begin with. So if you can provide a resistance that makes it more feasible, it's much better to go with that instead of quarter squats. In my experience, having band-trained for years, once I went back to free weights, it only took a couple weeks of neuro-adaptation and I was actually much stronger than before I'd left. So anecdotally, I'd say the opposite.

Resistance bands are a new revolution in training, used indoors and outdoors.

Same. Everybody in the world is using bands now since the quarantine. I still miss the gym but i love that i can still workout!

SeekerofTruth29 I got stronger but I didn't bulk up.
Reichert T Ook.I have been looking for alternatives to free weights, since I have 2 slipped discs.
I'm not sure if this is the answer for you then, but I"m also not a doctor.
how are these called this particular model? thanks

I might just be making up shit cause resistance is resistance, but still. I don't think you can replace olympic lifts or advanced calisthenic movements with bands.
Question: Why did you have to use a closed loop band for leg exercise? Some of these bands have enough tension to replicate a couple hundred pounds.
Anyone notice in the first few seconds of the video, theres a red orb popping out of the bushes on his right shoulder( the left side from viewers prespective),take a look, the red orb pops out twice then goes back into the bushes.

I subscribed, the guy looks in shape, good content and liked the name of the channel .
Have you tried stroops bands? I've heard that are safer due to the fabric on the outside of the band. Do you know if they still work as effectivley?
Thank you for the great video, explanations and demonstration.
Like the versatility of the bands. Have you checked out the Pillar 360, a totally unique and innovative way to run an individual or group program.
Hello i respect the page The Art of Manliness the Resistance Band training is so amazing also i love with trx jungle gym xt or with simple rope chain
How do you go about anchoring a triple band handle if you want to do single handed exercises?

thnx for idea about squats

I'm producing this 11pcs resistance bands. Do you need it?
Hi What brand of band are you using. Thank you. 💪
Does the red part you grab on the handles rotate as you use them?
Amazing video, thanks. So many tips in the demo. For instance, I never thought of changing body position as you did in the park to reduce resistance; sort of like drop sets at the gym. And I like how you put the door piece on the stronger hinge side of the door (as opposed to almost every other video that puts it on the open side). I'm going to get a set of bands. Thanks!
i had never seen this particular model before. whats called the hrand which peoduces it please? am in germany but will look on line. thanks
Oh, right on! Thanks.
Andrew Meixsell also look up omar isuf and biolayne on youtube
I wanna know. Did that body muscle shape you have come from only using the resistancebands?
I started using bands not long ago. Are there any negatives with bands and if so what are they?
Not many negatives. The only real negative is maybe then snapping on you but there are ways to fix that.
does that mean these resistance bands are safe for high bp?
+mrs benedict cumberbatch I think so. get a full set of bands from very light to very high resistance. and just use common sense and don't over do anything. Start where you are and do what you can
and ALWAYS clear it with your DOCTOR!
Fantastic video, thank you!
Hey i'm all for bands, hell I use them on/with my barbell exercises, but you claiming you can't get explosive power from weight training is silly. Olympic lifters and powerlifters both train for explosive power.. either way pretty cool stuff!
Yes, Bruce Lee used iron, and you can't get much more explosive than that.
don't bands work in the complete opposite of a muscle's strength curve? as a muscle contracts its at its weakest while a band's resistance gets harder at this point. For a band to be ideal it should be hardest at the beginning and become easier through the muscle's strength curve. Similar to the idea of the nautilus camming mechanism that Arthur Jones came up with. I guess my point is bands are the complete opposite resistance from what is ideal. Am I wrong?
Great information! Thank you for sharing!
Anyone knows the brand of those resistance bands or other system similar that has solid handles and allow a stacking several bands ?

Here's the link for their website:
www.lifelinefitness.com/store//products/ProductDetail.php?ProductID=687
It currently indicates their sold out so you might want to call them to see when they'll be back in stock. There's a seller on Amazon selling it for over $70 but don't pay that. I hope this helps. Cheers.
"Lawn movers" ...my favorite :D
Dave Chippy Funny, I always imagined starting a chainsaw when I do them.
I want the attachment that he showed that can be hooked up to a tree or pole but can't find.
Doesn't sell anymore. eBay might have it.
so u need to buy two bands? and u have to buy the handles separately? can someone help
Nice music! Reminds me of Disneyland :D
Good video, especially during quarantine time!
Anyone recommend any really strong resistance bands that are not liable to take someones eye out?
Henry Krinkle elite fts. Get bands not tubes.
I got rubber bandits
I'm quite late to the party however, a definite sub for this video alone 💪🏼
Great video thank you.
Where can I buy the resistance band at?
I use the Bodylastics brand. They are stackable just like yours. I might have to check out some more of your videos.
Where can I find those bands for purchase commercial driver must have
www.lifelinefitness.com/products/resistance/resistance-bands.html
Also on Amazon
What about resistance bands withot handle?
Silvan Tara
You could still grab on to the bands without handles for many exercises. I have some
no calves or hamstring work?
you had me at jiu-jitsu!
great video
I'm Very Impressed!!!
cant find Orbitor xt.. anywhere. Can you please tell me where did you get one. ? Thanks
Doesn't sell anymore unless you look on eBay or something.
Have a look at the convict conditioning series if you like functional strength, many thanks to AOM for their awesome website.
So how exactly is constant tension easier on the joints?
StevenCrowder
Thanks for the reply.
StevenCrowder
I see. Thanks!
Great video!
Excellent , mais pour certains mouvements , ils ne faut pas d'élastiques trop puissants
thank u so much , great video.
Right on brett. Thank you.
Ok I,m sold... gonna pick some up today
