Hmmm.... I am wondering if the battery you took (I assume it was from the 2ds xl that did the same poping for your last video) is also fauly, causing the 2ds to turn off. But then there is also the broken screen, so it might be detecting that (highly unlikely though). I have not watched the whole video yet,, so if the solution/answer to this pops up in it, don't yell at me. Edit: I mean the battery you used before you replaced the parts into your working 2ds.
They're all the same CTR-003, the old 3DS (not XL model, the small), 2DS, and 2DS XL use the same part. I've also had this problem of popping and turning off with a 3DS and another on a 2DS. Even just a disconnected/badly connected flat cable is enough to trigger this hardware check and power up failure. In the 3DS you may usually be luckier that it's not the broken screen, but just the speakers flat cable torn (it carries speakers, 3D slider, 3D LED, camera LED, backlight and 3D panel signals. Yes, it does a LOT), and it's a cheap part but annoying as hell to install.

I've now gone and bought a microscope and all the goodies to do smd work. I like your approach at diagnosing problems, but especially I just enjoy the happiness at every successful fix you do!!! Those broken screens will haunt you to the end of time, man. Like I said before, you handled that like a pro and it's cool to see you already developing the resources you need to get the job done. As for the Xbox Controller, that's basically programming and computer problems in a nutshell. Sometimes it just doesn't work, you fiddle with it, and then it magically starts working. Although now this opens the door to a very interesting path to faulty console controllers. I definitely would like to see more of those as you'd probably have a much higher chance of success since they don't have screens that'd need fixing! As I said before, great video and keep up the awesome work, Mr. Vince! :)

Steve my friends system does that as well, bad heat transfer from the APU is a possibility, get some thermal paste and get in there as soon as possible if that is the issue.
This is giving me a good idea on what to do with the 2ds that's in the mail. The ebay seller I bought it from was selling it with the "OLD"/Original 3ds, "OLD" 3ds xl, DS Light, and a DSi xl. now they're all faulty systems. Also I suggest for you to look into getting little shot glass sized cups and/or a Magnetic bowl to help organize the tiny screws so they don't get lost.
Watched your Vita one (crazy how someone sold it as faulty just because of the charging port) and now I'm here. Those pesky 2DS broken screens! That controller fix was weird considering you tested the voltage and everything; all it needed was an update :O

The reason the Xbox home was jumping so quickly when you press a button or shoulder buttons was because it was detecting 2 buttons pressed down and maybe the A button was a little but grubby and was sticking to the pad hence why you couldn't get it to turn on as well and also maybe due to the last owner having heavy sweaty fingers. Just thought I'd mention as I use 2 button press to navigate the home pages faster! Great video as always and superb fix.
Maybe got broken in transit . They go through a few different mailing agencies and we all know how much they really care about being careful with our fragile deliveries. Great video . 👍👍👍
For future reference the Microsoft store has controller diagnostic software you can download. Obviously the controller needs to read through USB but if you get more faulty ones.

It wasn't because of the usb cable that the xbox accessories app wouldn't let you update the controller, the app is just really buggy sometimes. I've had the same issue when I went to update my controller which isn't faulty.

Oh just a tip that I do when taking a controller with a rumble feature in it is tape the damn things into the slots they sit. Those things make me so frustrated while working on faulty controllers also helps keep those wires from accidentally breaking off.
not sure if its worth mentioning but some 3DS/2DS which have been modded with CFW (older CFW) wont turn on without the SD card in, might be worth while trying that on some if you get anymore in the future.
Also adding to it too: they MIGHT turn on without a card. I've done it to my 2DS and 3DSes I've got to sell here, it's a script your run to copy the boot file to the internal memory so it boots with modded card, without, or with any card.
I would love that but they are still too expensive. I missed out on a £109 buy it now listing that had a didn't charge fault because I hesitated. The auction ones go for over £150 for a faulty one without Joy-Con or dock which is madness :-)

My Mate VINCE You picked up a bargain with that controller, it was a corrupted firmware, leaving it plugged in for a few minutes initially downloads the firmware in the background, but re flashing the firmware again fixed the issues. Nice repair.
Yeah, I didn't know that until a few viewers mentioned it. It would have been a real easy fix if I knew that at the beginning. The controller is nice and clean now though which is a plus point even if it took a couple of hours to get there :-)
Super easy way to check for an expanded battery is to set it on a flat surface and spin it like a top. So long as the battery is manufactured flat like these and not something like a PSP 1000 battery then it should just stop because of the flat surface friction. If it spins then it's bulged and needs to be recycled.
The problem is the driver inside of the controller. when you plug in to PC it says DFU mode. (like recovery) and then when you connect to xbox and leave helped the drivers / software in the computer. that should be fix the issue.
Little suggestion :on the xbox one in the store search controller tester there's a few of them that are free and you can test all the buttons and it will also show if you have any analogue drift.

Vince i had a controller that wouldn’t turn on it was because the little gold trampoline (!) that seems to haven’t made contact between two boards. I pulled on it a bit and resinstalled and worked fine!
That's depressing. I used to take apart my Xbox 360 controller, and the Xbox One controller is the same concept. Torx 10 with security bit screws, 7 of them, 3 on each side, one in battery bay. Just they integrated a data board onto the Xbox One controller for firmware, which is cool. But what may have happened is, the firmware chip needed some power and data flow into it from an Xbox to reconfigure its chip so it can work again. And the reason they have a shield on the analog sticks to prevent the sticking is because the 360 design would allow you to take the analog stick all the way to the edge of the rotating swivels which would eventually snap them which made the analog sticks get stuck, nice to see they fixed that design flaw.
I know this is a late comment but the reason why the Nintendo switched off is due to watchdog circuitry. when switched on the circuitry looks for feedback from the backlight of both screens and if either is absent or incorrect it will instantly turn off again. This circuitry is found in all DS series as I used to repair them. I used to temporarily bypass this circuitry to ensure that the working screen has no pixel damage before replacement.

For the price you paid, you could install a capture board on it or external output to component. There is money to be made, just not by fixing the device itself. Thanks for the video.
when you put the the mainboard from the faulty 2ds into your working one you basically switched 2 parts, the screen AND the touch panel of the lower part of the screen. the screen is definitly damaged, but the touch panel could be too. for ruling that out you should have put the screen from your good 2ds into the faulty one.
DFU usually means Device Firmware Update and is a mode in which a device goes if it can't boot properly and wait for a firmware flash. So maybe the last firmware update failed ( explain why the controller was sold as not working) and when you plug it in the Xbox, the console detect the faulty controller and reattempted a firmware flash
Yes the bulging battery is a no go I watched a documentary on RUclips about li-ion batteries. It is from recharging the ions do not return to the "charged" side perfectly so strands of ions called dendrites form and once they make a connection between + & - the battery discharge and poof
no offense, but i'm really triggered on a few parts. one of them being the fact that the first time he tried to power on the 2ds, with the bulging battery still in it, he didn't let it charge, or even try to charge. he just went straight to trying to do stuff with it. the other one being the fact that the thing that fell out of the 2ds when he was opening it was a piece of RF shielding, used to sheild the components and help cool them down. That aside, i love the vids, keep up the good work! :D
You can tell if it's been opened up from screws, look them closely. Does it look like bit stripped, or does it have marks of screw driver. Also does the casing show some signs of opening
Going off my experience with phones and laptops... Sometimes when things have been completely discharged they needd to charge for an hour or so before there's enough charge to power up..even if it is normally able to run off charger... Looks like you ended up on the right path anyway.... But worth bearing in mind.
Rewatch the video, he does mention that some sellers are not altogether honest about their broken items. I used to repair DS lites etc. I gave up after receiving water damaged motherboards and other items that had repairs obviously been attempted. Vince does not do these for profit, just entertainment value. By all means have a go, but buyer beware.
if you push down hard, you can use a small flathead screwdriver on xbox products, instead of the security bits. Anther tip is to use a screwdriver that you can put the bits into, to get a better grip.
I use a wired Xbox 360 controller for the pc and the cable died (loose connection somewhere along the cable). If you have a spare USB cable, that is really easy to fix. I de-soldered the internal connector that connects the board and the cable and just soldered the spare USB cable directly onto the board. (more reliable than trying to get the male part of the connector onto a new cable, but I think that would be doable as well) The cables have a standard colour code so its easy to know what has to go where. (Triggers facing away from you, it's: Red White Green Black) i.imgur.com/VMenDBC.jpg (sorry for the blurry picture, noticed too late but I guess you can see it well enough) Was like 20 minutes of work, most of the time to get the casing apart and together. Really easy and saves a bit of money. So yeah, I agree with the channel here, it's sometimes worth it to take stuff apart. Of course, only if warranty doesn't cover it, otherwise sending it in would just be the better idea.
Hi there, I watched your video on re downloading the Nintendo games earlier today. I mentioned your RUclips video in my video on trying to fix a TV and fitting the new screen in this 2DS. Unfortunately I had no games on this 2DS but I did on a used broken 2DS XL :-)
Maybe the elite controller uses an extra internal batery as a backup or something because charging it fixed it even though there were no batteries inside of the controller
Just curious. If there's no money to be made, is it still work fixing to gain back the money invested/lost already and break even? Guess it's pretty case dependent.
Yeah replace any bulging or swelling lithium ion batteries or packs they swell because gasses build up inside trying to escape but they can't until eventually a catastrophic event happens like the electrolytes leak or it bursts into flames also can damage device by putting pressure on anything near the battery especially if it is in a tight enclosure
The DS was designed to fail. I've had several of the original DS and the 2DS. They all stopped taking a charge around 6-9 months of use. Turns out there is a resistor that fails and stops charging. If you bypass it you're back in business. I still have one of each and they continue to function just find after the bypass. They're several years old now still going strong.
Also my 2DS have the triblade screws. I don't recall seeing one with phillips heads. I could be wrong. Looks like the one you ended up with took a hit in the front. The screen was cracked and bent inward slightly. I bet it was an angry player that went completely "game over" on that device.
torx screw drivers for xbox from alibabba come with the py thing like 1.99 for a few of both, or custom shells come with both free and a shell for about 2 to 7 bucks, buttons vary on price.
i had similar issues with one of those xbox controllers. The usb connectors are prone to damage but whats worse is the USB cable that comees with them, it doesnt sit nicely in the port, mine was always wiggly and would drop connection at the slightest movement since the day i got it. I got some cheap usb cables on ebay and they worked alot better, snug fit and less likely to stop making contact with the pins. Eventually the port broke and I've used battery packs ever since, no more cable charging and disconnects. The a button also stopped working, and its very hard to find a suitable rubber membrane that fits well and doesnt feel hard to press. oem parts not available, just cheap aftermarket options that are hit and miss.
Now that you know how to take them apart you will be able to do controller case mod's if you wanted ;) Also can change the analog sticks to coloured metal ones. Just a idea. Great vid

The battery isn't faulty, it's just unsafe. Bulging batteries still work perfectly fine.

You had a very good luck because on the 2ds the bottom screen got light up and you saw the crack

Try an iPhone before the 5s, it’s easy with the 5. The 2DS’s also do that ALL the time when the screen is broken. Mine did that.

I would recommend getting a little tray to keep your screws in order. So you don’t get them mixed up with other screws.

That metal plate i believe is an RF shield. Use the other board to see how is fixed on the board. I believe is soldered

The sound on the 2DS means that the ribbon cables are broken or not completely in place anymore. Seems this was thrown down with quite some force.
Lil tip; put a magnet on the shaft of your screwdriver to pull screws from recessed holes ;)
If you rub the tip of a screwdriver over a magnet you will get the same result.

Yes the bulging battery is a no go I watched a documentary on RUclips about li-ion batteries. It is from recharging the ions do not return to the "charged" side perfectly so strands of ions called dendrites form and once they make a connection between + & - the battery discharge and poof
no offense, but i'm really triggered on a few parts. one of them being the fact that the first time he tried to power on the 2ds, with the bulging battery still in it, he didn't let it charge, or even try to charge. he just went straight to trying to do stuff with it. the other one being the fact that the thing that fell out of the 2ds when he was opening it was a piece of RF shielding, used to sheild the components and help cool them down. That aside, i love the vids, keep up the good work! :D

You can tell if it's been opened up from screws, look them closely. Does it look like bit stripped, or does it have marks of screw driver. Also does the casing show some signs of opening
Going off my experience with phones and laptops... Sometimes when things have been completely discharged they needd to charge for an hour or so before there's enough charge to power up..even if it is normally able to run off charger... Looks like you ended up on the right path anyway.... But worth bearing in mind.
These repair videos are good, these make me want to buy faulty consoles and items i want and fix them
Rewatch the video, he does mention that some sellers are not altogether honest about their broken items. I used to repair DS lites etc. I gave up after receiving water damaged motherboards and other items that had repairs obviously been attempted. Vince does not do these for profit, just entertainment value. By all means have a go, but buyer beware.
A rule of thumb from seeing these listings. "I have no idea what is wrong with it" translates to "I broke it". :D
if you push down hard, you can use a small flathead screwdriver on xbox products, instead of the security bits. Anther tip is to use a screwdriver that you can put the bits into, to get a better grip.
I use a wired Xbox 360 controller for the pc and the cable died (loose connection somewhere along the cable).
If you have a spare USB cable, that is really easy to fix.
I de-soldered the internal connector that connects the board and the cable and just soldered the spare USB cable directly onto the board.
(more reliable than trying to get the male part of the connector onto a new cable, but I think that would be doable as well)
The cables have a standard colour code so its easy to know what has to go where. (Triggers facing away from you, it's: Red White Green Black)

Was like 20 minutes of work, most of the time to get the casing apart and together.
Really easy and saves a bit of money.
So yeah, I agree with the channel here, it's sometimes worth it to take stuff apart.
Of course, only if warranty doesn't cover it, otherwise sending it in would just be the better idea.

the shielding that fell off means someone has been in it. Usually people take them off because they will "hard mod" there 3ds/2ds.

The Metal "Thing" that was lose, is not for cooling. Its an RF shield for EMC (electromagnetic compatibility).

Maybe the elite controller uses an extra internal batery as a backup or something because charging it fixed it even though there were no batteries inside of the controller

Just curious. If there's no money to be made, is it still work fixing to gain back the money invested/lost already and break even? Guess it's pretty case dependent.
Yeah replace any bulging or swelling lithium ion batteries or packs they swell because gasses build up inside trying to escape but they can't until eventually a catastrophic event happens like the electrolytes leak or it bursts into flames also can damage device by putting pressure on anything near the battery especially if it is in a tight enclosure
The DS was designed to fail. I've had several of the original DS and the 2DS. They all stopped taking a charge around 6-9 months of use. Turns out there is a resistor that fails and stops charging. If you bypass it you're back in business. I still have one of each and they continue to function just find after the bypass. They're several years old now still going strong.
Also my 2DS have the triblade screws. I don't recall seeing one with phillips heads. I could be wrong.
Looks like the one you ended up with took a hit in the front. The screen was cracked and bent inward slightly. I bet it was an angry player that went completely "game over" on that device.
This uses Chip on glass tech to control the screen. If the crack damages the driver chip that is embedded in the panel it will pop.
torx screw drivers for xbox from alibabba come with the py thing like 1.99 for a few of both, or custom shells come with both free and a shell for about 2 to 7 bucks, buttons vary on price.
i had similar issues with one of those xbox controllers. The usb connectors are prone to damage but whats worse is the USB cable that comees with them, it doesnt sit nicely in the port, mine was always wiggly and would drop connection at the slightest movement since the day i got it. I got some cheap usb cables on ebay and they worked alot better, snug fit and less likely to stop making contact with the pins. Eventually the port broke and I've used battery packs ever since, no more cable charging and disconnects. The a button also stopped working, and its very hard to find a suitable rubber membrane that fits well and doesnt feel hard to press. oem parts not available, just cheap aftermarket options that are hit and miss.
