Worked 10 years teaching HS Math at Grant HS in Sacramento. Beaten twice, one knife fight a one gun incident in classroom. Happy to have retired and left!
That's South Sac Iraq. I grew up in Stockton and you have to expect some riff raff...but you can never be caught slipping and be street smart too. But as a sub in the 80s and 90s, students respect how you project and handle yourself.
@@Runitup84 Right, I'm thinking of Florin. Yep we used to play Grant and North Highlands in football back in the80s. Thuggish schools, but so was Edison in South Stockton so no biggie. But none of these HS were as thuggish as Castlemont Oakland...those MFers came to fight rather than play ball! Castlemont had a good jazz funk band though.
DPH gets pretty crazy at times. Grant always had a formidable football team. It was good to see at least a percentage of those kids getting a chance to have a life outside of the streets. Not many of the kids who grow up in that hood ever made it outta there. I wish we as a society would do something significant to help them aside from labelling them as gangsters, slapping on the handcuffs, and locking them in a cage.
I live here since 1989 and you did a pretty good job. To do it correctly you need to do a 4-5hr video. Yes the crime is now really high and a good reason we are leaving. Plus home prices are crazy high. On the other hand, in the spring when everything is green it is a really nice place to be. ☺
I worked for the State for 16 years, and travelled to visit the five psych hospitals in the state. Every so often, we would go to Sacramento. Old Town was awesome, but dang ... there were so many homeless just laying on the street!
It was once like swamp land had to be drained, I did a lot of research on where people lives when things were segregated it was weird black people were where old Sac, then few blocks up 4th street was Asian district and it went on from there through downtown.
Hi Joe Surprisingly this came out to be one of the best videos you posted in last few months. Some part of the city is so picturesque that it could be an ideal spot for canvass painters, particularly nature lovers. Because of so many big trees around everywhere, instead of concrete jungle which we see all over, Sacramento is a exemplary exception to it. Thanks for this stunningly beautiful video and trip both.
Dang it's too bad you weren't in town next weekend when it's supposed to be 80 degrees. It's unusually cold this weekend probably 20 degrees below normal. The trees, blue sky, the snow capped mountains the city pops more on sunny days like it will be next week.
I was hoping you were coming to Sacramento ! I have just loved your California Journey! Great Drone coverage and shots again Joe! From the back end of the state Capital to the Home of the Kings the Golden 1 Center ! I the architecture of this city is simply amazing and beautiful! Thank Joe for this fabulous video!
I went to Newton Booth elementary school in 1957-58. Sacramento was @ 150,000 population then. Graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1964. My how the city has grown over the years. It's always been beautiful.
Always educational and entertaining... You are doing for America today what the Western movies did in the 1950s and 1960s: this time showcasing America (as it really is) to the world!!
Lived near and worked right in downtown (OB 1, right across from the Capitol). I remember when the Tower Bridge got that coat of paint…we called it the “baby poop bridge”! 🤣. I used to occasionally go to the cafeteria in the basement of the Capitol, and whenever there were reports of earthquakes (California, after all), I would dash over to the Capitol and, right near the East doors, was a seismograph. Gorgeous building!
If you end up going further north, be sure to make a stop in Willows, California. I've never lived there. But it's one of the more charming small cities of the central valley, and they have the Thunderhill Raceway Park. I grew up in Esparto California, a small town located just outside Capay Valley, which is a pretty gorgeous landscape that also has the Cache Creek Casino Resort; the main moneymaker of Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. The tribe has been very supportive of Esparto and its residents through yearly $1M donations to the school system, and the recent construction of both a health clinic and a park with a pool seen just as you enter town. Esparto is about 45 minutes west of Sacramento but there's all sorts of very small towns when you go futher up the valley. I recommend you check it out if you get the chance. There's also some wineries further north of there if you're in to that sort of thing.

Sacramento is a pretty nice place. You picked a good time to visit as the summer the heat can be sweltering. The California Railroad Museum is awesome. The locomotive you saw was only a fraction of the collection. The indoor museum is spectacular with many more trains and exhibits. For those who may not know, Sacramento was the beginning of the Transcontinental Railroad and the Central Pacific Line commissioned by President Lincoln going to the east over Donner Pass and the Sierra Nevada meeting up with the Union Pacific at Promontory Point, Utah. Well chronicled in the Steve Ambrose book: Nothing Like it in the World. Great video!

G'day from Australia, have only recently come across your channel but have enjoyed watching previous video's of towns you have visited. Very entertaining and informative in your talks, one thing I do have to say is I am shocked at the amount of run down (refuse to use poverty) that the majority of places are, what is causing this, here in Australia we do have smaller rural towns that eventually shut down, but the big difference between here and the USA is population, Australia's population at present is 26 million on a land mass the same as mainland USA ?, please keep making these video's.
I misspent my youth and college years in Sacramento. You did a nice job of showing the Old Sac area. But potential first time visitors should know there's a heck of a lot more to Sacramento. Lots of crime, lots of gang activity, truly horrendous amount of homeless. And there are real, proper ghettos. I was a little bit concerned for your safety in some of those shots. On the other hand, the rivers that run through Sac add a lot of fun recreational opportunities. Keep up your good work!
He was OK during the day, but that underpass... he was lucky there. In the 90's, walking across that bridge was no big deal, but now... Like I said, he was quite lucky. Not the city I knew as a kid.
i'm glad you made a video tour about Sactown. I lived here from 1993 to 1999, left and joined the US Army thanks to nearby recruiting center. There's not much job opportunity there, just fastfood jobs and dead end factory job at Apple Computer, by Laguna Blvd in South Sacramento. I was competing for work hours with the immigrant Indians from India, by Pakistan (not native American). I'm glad I joined the army to get out of that situation and I'm glad I did. The thing about Sacramento, if you aint got a stable job, you'll end up homeless. I dont miss Sacramento at all. But thanks for the video footage/blog.
Great videos, I will never be able to travel around the USA, not even in my dreams, so when you take us with you, we can see how other people live the ratio of work and poverty, traveling is nice but also tiring, I had visited Europe, In a tour, I had to get up early to be ready for the tour bus to take us around to see places, after my trip vacation I was exhausted ..😅. But I did have a good time ... Blessings to you and Nicole drive safe and keep up the good work😊😅😅😅

@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip If you head up to Chico in Northern California checkout the Madison Bear Garden. Very cool and interesting place to have lunch. It is very similar to Fanny Ann's Saloon. I moved to Sacramento, from Albuquerque, and lived there for a few years, before moving to Manhattan ( I wanted to experience, the big 🍎 apple). I actually worked at the 🚒🔥 firehouse ( restaurant), which was shown. Anyways, after 8 years of living in Manhattan, I moved back to Sacramento, 10 years, ago. It was still very affordable, back then, but now it's gotten expensive, and it's growing very quickly. But overall, it's a nice city, to call home( and with restaurants, like ( Tres Hermanas, ), you can't go wrong!
Besides the bridge, there's another famous tower associated with Sacramento: Tower Records, that started out there in the early 60s. Did you get a chance to check out the Railroad Museum during your visit? I got a chuckle at 15:42 seeing the Embassy Suites on the right side of the road--when I stayed there years ago I got in trouble for going barefoot in the lobby to the breakfast bar. Curious to see your exploration of Gold Country, I'm headed up there next week myself. Until next time, happy trails!
From what I saw in the video the city does a very good job taking care of their trees, that is what 🌲🌴 trees in a city should look like. Been a tree Doctor all my life.
Lovely city! Didn't know what to expect. Love all those trees everywhere. Bear and Crown! I thought that sounded like an English pub name and sure enough it turned out to be one. Hopefully they had sticky toffee pudding, Jam roly-poly and trifle on the menu haha. M

Thank you for this video. I really enjoy watching your videos like always you bring a lot of knowledge to the world.
Ceasar Chavez Plaza - also known as Wino Park since at least the 1960s.
Let's hear it for WINO PARK!!!
Another great video of a beautiful city, glad you enjoyed your bangers and mash a British staple.
Another very good video, ❤ love 💕 you two!! Thanks for showing us around Sacramento
Wonderful video and beautiful city thanks for sharing joe and Nic 👍
@@twystedhumour that's funny. The underpass was exactly where I had my concern!
Nice to see you in the 916.
A very nice video. Sacramento is scenic with nice buildings. The neighborhoods looked nice too. Other than the cost I could live here nicely.
Enjoyed the tour , Joe's dinner's the Winner.....
i'm glad you made a video tour about Sactown.
You're visiting Sacramento in winter, when the trees are bare. Come back in May if you really want to see the spectacular urban forest.
Blessings to you and Nicole drive safe and keep up the good work😊😅😅😅
Thank you!!
Joe & Nic, if you’re driving to the Northcoast, don’t forget to drive through the Avenue of the Giants. It’s an amazing place. Thanks for sharing your adventure in Sac. We live Northeast of Sac. Enjoy your time in Cali although it’s being mismanaged by the governor.
There’s sumthin’ about the weather… they call it the Indian Spring…
Song in my head since watching this episode. Nevermind, again a great show. Thanks guys.
I lived in California close to 6 years and I've never been.. to Sacramento traveling a lot in Southern California when is far north to Oakland... I think now I want to go visit Sacramento thank you so much
I was just in Sacramento with my brother. We had lunch at Fanny Ann's Saloon in old town. Also took a tour of Sutter's Fort SHM. Always enjoy your videos!
We were across the street from Fanny Ann’s!
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip If you head up to Chico in Northern California checkout the Madison Bear Garden. Very cool and interesting place to have lunch. It is very similar to Fanny Ann's Saloon. It was one of my hangouts when I was going to college at CSU-Chico in the late 1970's. My oldest brother lives in Chico and my other brother lives in Oroville. I live up in Washington State.
My sister lives in Sacramento. I alway like to visit her when I can. it's a beautiful city, in a forest. Thanks.
I live in Sacramento! And I’m from Redding CA! Excited to see your next videos 😊
You two enjoy Sacramento california.good place to live.🤔
Thank you for sharing this tour of Sacramento. It is a beautiful city that I’ve visited many times, but you showed lots of places I’ve never seen. 😊
THANKS JOE AND NIC ❤
The p60 ruins the videos
I live in northeast of Brasil, in a city called, FORTALEZA, capital of the estate of
CEARÁ.
And i Just Fell in love with SACRAMENTO !
Wonderful tour and a cool city!! Thanks for sharing.
From what I saw in the video the city does a very good job taking care of their trees, that is what 🌲🌴 trees in a city should look like. Been a tree Doctor all my life.
You would love it there, then. Trees everywhere, all different kinds.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip Man don't tempt me, not fair, long story behind that 😁. Loved the city beautiful 😍 was that wooden streets in old pictures?
Awesome ,I was hoping you would get up in the gold rush town area ,have fun you two!..😎👍👍
I spent some time in Sacramento in the mid 90s and thought it was a wonderfully livable city. I also loved the trees!
Lovely city! Didn't know what to expect. Love all those trees everywhere. Bear and Crown! I thought that sounded like an English pub name and sure enough it turned out to be one. Hopefully they had sticky toffee pudding, Jam roly-poly and trifle on the menu haha. M
Astounding visit. Awesome Capital building & stamping of the passport, most treed city, bangers'n mash & bread pudding...oh man! it's my element. Thank you for taking us along. Next; Gold Rush towns here we come. 🥰
Thanks!!
15:02 - Roundabout . Common in Australia .
born and raised in sac. thanks for the upload
Hope you got to see the train museum- it’s the best one I’ve ever seen
I used to live close by and I got the chance to sleep overnight on the Delta King paddle boat! Good times 😊
Really good video. A lovely looking historical city. Great architecture but a pity about the crime. The capital building was impressive.
Even on rainy days you do videos keep it up
I was in Old Sacramento a few years ago and they have horse carriage rides you can do! My favorite thing was seeing the carriage driver leaned back surfing his iPhone while waiting for customers😂
Be sure to hit Cannery Row in Monterey if you head that way. Awesome
@Joe & Nic's Road Trip
