  • It’s easy to remove big or ugly fluorescent light fixtures in your kitchen. They produce harsh white light, they can flicker annoyingly, and the bulbs are expensive to replace, so just get rid of them.
While they are big and look daunting to remove, it’s actually really simple to remove them. In fact, all fluorescent ceiling light fixtures that require these long fluorescent tube bulbs are constructed the same way and are removed the same way, which is easy to do.
Now the housing or the cover of the light fixture can differ among the light fixtures but they are also very easy to figure out how to remove.
The ballast, which is the part that looks like a black rectangular box, regulates the electric current running through the light fixture and keeps the fluorescent lamp from burning out, but that’s neither here nor there since you are going to remove the whole thing and you can do that simply by unscrewing a couple of screws at each end of the fixture. But before you do that, just detach the wires coming out from the ceiling. The 3 connection points for the house wires are the at the nut connecting the white wires, the nut connecting the black wires the black wires and the screw connecting the ground wire.
You’ll frequently find that no electrical box was ever installed and that the wires are coming straight out of a hole in the ceiling dry wall. I show you how to install an electrical box in my next video, so please be sure to check that out.

No he’s right… single moms or somebody who doesn’t know might follow this and kill themselves. Some fixtures have a constant supply that stays on even if the light switch is off. Always turn the breaker off!!

Thank you. A lot of videos around this topic are over complicated. I really just needed the quick info on what I needed to prepare for then taking the fixture down, and this did just that. Thanks!

Right on about those fluorescent light fixtures. I agree 100%. We have two of them in our kitchen and I HATE THEM. It takes my wife and I standing on step stools just to remove the covers in order to change those horrible fluorescent tubes. Whoever designed these should be give a dope slap; no.... a double dope slap.

Calm down, Gerry. This video wasn't made to cater to your specific needs... Everyone has a different starting point. No need to be rude about it. You can suggest and correct people without being such a turd, you know...
