From a single mother who is learning to do all of these things, thank you. I appreciate you so much. GOD bless you and your family and of course I subscribed 😁
Having done a work-study job while in college which had me relamping all fluorescent lamp bulbs in my city (we replaced 40W tubes to 34W, a 15% energy savings which also was partially-incentivized by the local electric company), I’d only add when putting in a new tube, make sure its fully-seated inside the fixture terminals on both sides by SLIGHTLY pulling downwards on the ends so it “clicks” into place (CAREFUL: don’t break the tube!). This helps ensure the two pins on each end of tube make maximal contact with the recessed holder, thus avoiding “hot spots” in the connections (so although the tube may light up as expected, the reduced contact area may lead to higher resistance as oxidation builds up, reducing the life of the new bulb(s) & leading to premature failure).
THANK YOU! Clear and to-the-point! With the cost of living so high, no handymen available, and my hubby's back going out, I'll be doing a lot more of this stuff myself. I appreciate your help!

Thank you! I’ve never had a fluorescent light that I had to change before, and your video gave me the simple instructions I needed. Thank you, from this first time homeowner.
Replaced an old 4 foot, 2 bulb fluorescent fixture over my work bench with a new LED fixture 2 days ago. It's much lighter weight and brighter but the bulbs are non removable. Recently subscribed to your channel & it's been very helpful.
I am torn between the plug and play LED bulb replacements or the fixture like you are talking about with integrated LEDs. If the integrated LEDs don't fail for 10 years probably not a bad option. I just hope these integrated LED fixtures don't start dropping out or it will be a pain needing to swap out the fixtures when the lights go out.
Thank you so much for your very clear explanation and instructions. I’m alone and it gets so hard to get these little things done around the house. I appreciate you!

Thank you. I hadn't a clue on how to remove the bulbs. Mine don't give the measurement, but I can figure that out. What I can not figure out is what to do with old fluorescent light tubes. You cannot just throw them out. We have another dead set in the basement collecting dust because we didn't know how to dispose of them, and that was probably 10-15 years ago. I'm wishing my late husband had never put this fixture up. Lowes only takes compact bulbs, yet ironically, Lowes is where I have to go to buy replacement tubes. I live in a rural area; I'd be willing to ship them to a recycler, but where?
Hard to believe that fluorescent fixtures have been with us for over 80 years now. I remember when I was in grade school about 50 years ago when they replaced the incandescent fixtures (the cool retro "Saturn Ring" type that used partially-silvered bulbs) with ones very similar to what is shown in the video. I can also recall cleaning eight-foot fluorescent fixtures from the early 1940s many years ago; the diffusers were GLASS and very heavy but IMO quite attractive for their day. They were made by Columbia Fixture Company somewhere in Eastern Washington. Looks like it is finally about time to replace the bulbs in my one fluorescent fixture with drop-in LED replacements since the latter's lumens per watt and longer life are making it more appealing.
Those Saturn ring hanging pendants were awesome. We had them in our school in the '70s. They each took a 300W Duro-Test mogul base silver bowl bulb. There were 6 of these fixtures per classroom, plus some recessed fixtures along one side of the room. These provided wonderful shadow-free light bounced off the white ceiling. Lots of power draw (and unwanted heat) for the amount of light received, but those were state-of-the-art at the time the school was built around 1970. As incandescent lighting becomes rarer and rarer, I relish seeing it whenever I do come across it.
I needed this information to be able to change bulbs at my new place. your video is the first one I found and after watching it you explained 100% of everything I need to know! Now I don't need to watch anyone else's video!

I'd been putting this off forever because I had little confidence I knew what I was doing, but after watching this video I was able to switch out four burned out tubes for four good ones from my garage until I can order new lights. It went very well and took twenty minutes. Now I'll order new lights. Thanks!

Great video, and very well explained. However, I would not mix different color temperatures of fluorescent tubes in the same fixture. The old tubes were cool white while the new ones are daylight. You may not find T12 bulbs no days since they haven't been manufactured in many many years now and even T8's may be difficult to find in some areas since they're not much better than T12's. If you can't find T12's, your fixture could have a universal ballast in that will fire both T12's and T8's. If you want to find out, you need to remove the center cover of your fixture and the label on the ballast will tell you what type, length and number of bulbs it will work for. Also keep in mind that most(if not all) residential fixtures will require 40 watt T12 bulbs and 32 watt T8 bulbs.
depends where one lives though. in Canada i see mountains of t12's in all locations that sell such things and boxes of boxes of electronic versions of t12 ballasts. have not been phased out here yet and plan to keep stocking on them till that day comes. (the vintage/antique collector within me demands such lmao)
T12’s are still made. You can buy them at any home improvement store. However, certain types, such as standard halo-phosphate F40, F34, and F96T12’s, as well as tri-phosphor F40 and F96T12’s below 87 CRI have been banned from sale in the US. Also, the states of Colorado, Maryland, and Hawaii have banned all linear fluorescents above 87 CRI, which mean that T12’s can no longer be purchased from retail and online stores in those states.
sorta reminds me of a fixture i got from a garage since people we know are selling the place and was allowed to take it as it didn't work as the 2 t12's were burnt anyway. so i tried 2 of my old 30 year old tubes in it and it lit up just fine. so i then put in the newer tubes kinda shown there. and also worked. but when i plugged it in days later the tubes lit dimly pulsing with buzzing and kinda damaged one of my tubes a slight it still works but just now a fainted burn spot. no idea if its ballast was going bad or it didn't like those tubes. but i just changed it to an electronic ballast for t12's much as people switching to led plug and play for me.. i still love vintage styling lighting and don't plan to give up using t12's any time soon in some areas anyways. at least here can still buy the tubes and electronic ballasts as replacements still.
Hi Suzuran, a few people have mentioned the T12 type are no longer produced but like you I still find them in my area. I would venture to guess in another 3-5 years pretty much everything will be LED.
yeah pretty much. i guess depends if all stuff im seeing is just old stock that's plentiful or not. for me i just love old tech since the t12 technology been around since the 1930's. yeah its improved since but other than that has not changed much ehe.
Thank you, this was very helpful. Where should I go to find out what LED plug-and-play replacement I need for a 34W 1 1/2 inch "old style" bulb. I tried 32W old style bulbs (and was able to install them thanks to your instructions), but I am getting buzzing and flickering, so I assume the ballast is damaged. Thank you.

Also, the states of Colorado, Maryland, and Hawaii have banned all linear fluorescents above 87 CRI, which mean that T12’s can no longer be purchased from retail and online stores in those states.
T12s are still made.
Thank you for the video. It assisted me today
You are a life saver! Thank you
sorta reminds me of a fixture i got from a garage since people we know are selling the place and was allowed to take it as it didn't work as the 2 t12's were burnt anyway. so i tried 2 of my old 30 year old tubes in it and it lit up just fine. so i then put in the newer tubes kinda shown there. and also worked. but when i plugged it in days later the tubes lit dimly pulsing with buzzing and kinda damaged one of my tubes a slight it still works but just now a fainted burn spot. no idea if its ballast was going bad or it didn't like those tubes. but i just changed it to an electronic ballast for t12's much as people switching to led plug and play for me.. i still love vintage styling lighting and don't plan to give up using t12's any time soon in some areas anyways. at least here can still buy the tubes and electronic ballasts as replacements still.
You are everything ❤️.I've been struggling with this light cover. You've help me in an enormous way. Thank you
this was so so helpful!! thank you!
When installing the new bulbs do we turn it left or right?
Either direction, it doesn’t matter.
Thank you.
Thanks for this video. Really helped to get things right!
