I really have to say this to you. One has to admire a guy who has an ability to wrench with an ease of mind, and selflessly gives to those who want to learn general maintenance practices. I'm the aircraft guy from Illinois, and I've gotta say you are THE person to passes on the gift you have, to others who actually want to learn. You really should be named Teacher1 instead of Mustie1. Your abilities are obviously well learned, and your ability to teach the younger crowd who wants to learn how to spin a wrench. My hats off to you, sir, and also your ability to see any older machine and see it's use for future videos! Could not see that, but now as I see your mission of accomplishments, you sir are a teacher, and a damn good one. Your handiness, to me, are clear. Your maintenance knowledge is very good, and your ability to sort out the stumbling blocks that are just the way of life of the wrench world. My best wishes to you and your family. Aircraft Guy
Mustie1, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your work/videos. I have been watching for a couple years now. My father ran a small engine repair shop when I was a kid. He passed away back in 2003. Watching your videos brings back so many memories of "helping" him work on tractors. Blessings to you and your family. Keep on wrenchin'.
I've ground some wrenches thin too, Mustie. Heck, I've cut some in half. I always look at loose tools at yard sales for those thin, cheap wrenches that used to come with some motorbikes/cars. Love to find those and buy them up.
New subscriber here, happened to stumble across one of your videos, been watching a few everyday since! Enjoy all your content! I’m a weekend warrior with moderate engine knowledge, but have learned a lot of troubleshooting tips from watching your vids, wish I would’ve stumbled across you a couple years earlier, had an old Gibson snow blower with a 8.5hp B&S, could never get it to stay running ended up selling it as is after scoring a factory damaged Poulan Pro for real cheap. Keep up that fantastic videos! Thank you for sharing your craft and knowledge! Look forward to learning more!
That engine started so easy when you gave it squirt of petrol, i thought yep its happy to run on next to nothing, worth a bit of time. Mice seem to love mower engines, i suppose its a luxury appartment to mice :-D. I allways enjoy your mower/engine tinkering, most are recoverable :-).
I have a lawn mower that was given to me, I have not done any testing, other than turning the engine to make sure it was not locked up. so I accepted it after that. Now, I know things to do to mine. I don't think there are wires messed with on this one. I appreciate the video on that lawn mower!
I'm 50, and it is my dream to work in a small engine shop. Even as a helper. I like Mustie's vids. He has helped me do repairs for friends, and save them a lot of money. Thanks mustie!!! Anybody in Winston Salem need help?
I did the same kind of engine replacement on my '93 Craftsman which did not have the carburetor solenoid switch. My fix was to file down the solenoid pin, and it runs fine. Oh yes it like to give a loud POP when I turn the engine off. Keep up the Great videos.
your videos are perfect for morning coffee....here....the perfect sound effects ....normally I can hear a Rooster ....yelling for a date ...hehehe...your approach is ...don't over think something ...doing it by the numbers always works
We used to make our own drift pins out of nails. We took handles of damaged drift pin, drilled a hole in the middle and put a set screw in the side. Grind the tip of the nail using a drill and sand paper. A grinding stone works too. Just case harden the nail once you get the OD.
Another nice video bud. I too am a mechanic, but like watching how other people do things. You and I do things very similarly and it makes it fun to watch. I guess I'm strange. Lol. Oh, that nut was not fucked up at the factory.
There's no doubt your passion and dedication to bring a so called piece of rubbish back to life is a credit to you and a pleasure to watch. But don't you think, it would be wiser to leave the critters where they where living. instead of bringing them home with you.
Hey Mustie!!! I have a pair of sears LT1000s that need to become one functional tractor, one was run low on oil and the engine threw the rod thru the case, the other has deck issue, my brother used it to find loose metal and large rocks on his back lawn, I think he also broke the engine key way.... The info on the carb solenoid is very helpful!!!
Mustie1, CLEAN Both of them ! Hell I've seen you work on that type Carb. 100 times ! this way, next project take off the old and put this backup on ! Clean the subject carb. and put it in standby .
people never forget to check spark plug gap, this one thing i make habit and have even fixed motors. normal gaps for most engines are 0.6mm to 0.8mm if i'm ever unsure i put to 0.7mm and go from there
I'm swapping engines on my craftsman as well and am having difficulty getting to the 4th bolt on the bottom of the motor to remove it. I noticed you didn't remove the deck, but do I need to remove the other pulleys? They seem to be in the way, or will they pivot out of the way?
I remember I used to have to sometimes blow into my moped's gas tank to unblock the fuel filter. Cop pulls me over for making an illegal right turn, and asks me why I had a black ring around my mouth. Thankfully some jerkoff started yelling at the other cop there after he got pulled over for the same thing, so the cop I was talking to waved me off.
With having discovered dirty or contaminated fuel, the best thing to do is tip out the old fuel and replace it with new fuel, that way you have eliminated one problem, the reason I say this is because I also work on 2 and 4 stroke motors, at times I do have some problems with them. Sam Knudsen South Australia Australia
You might consider keeping a mason jar around just for when you are checking the fuel in the carburator. Drain some of the fuel in the jar to about a third to 1/2 and then swirl it around so the fuel spins in the jar and then look at the bottom. That is how aircraft fuel is inspected for clarity, water and other contaminants.
Hey, What do "YOU" do with the old gasoline from the small engen's? I don't want to keep it in the shed for long. Please help. Thank You. ( Mike in Somersworth,NH )
The only issue I have with those model Craftsmans is the mower deck height adjustment maxes out at less than 3" in the top setting. I have modified them to get just over 3" cut but the only way I can figure out how to raise the blade to where I want it is to use larger tires. Thats more work than what these mowers are worth IMHO.
Steel wool works well for exhaust pips. Otherwise, Bounce dryer sheets, mothballs, peppermint (oil on cotton balls) are some other ideas. Oh, and about half a dozen roving cats, which in my neighborhood, noooo problem.
Your wrenching skills are evident, but what I'd really like is a lesson in how to yard sale that well... $20 for a riding mower, even a pile of rust with four bits of rubber sitting nearby, is so much lower than anything I've EVER seen at a yard sale or auction. And a free one? Insane.
It strikes me that with all the old machinery you mess with my first step would be a good degreaser and pressure washing. It is a lot more fun to work on clean gear! It would also probably be safer when cleaning mouse debris than air blasting and the resulting atomization although I know you say you wear a dust mask. Just saying. Good videos. Take care. Doug
I started up my tractor one time and quickly shut it off after seeing something fly out from the shroud. It was a mouse, it wrapped around the air cleaner screw
Hi Mustie, how often do you change the fuel filter on these mowers? Lot of people say it should be changed once a year. I have a 3 year old mower and never changed it once.
For the life of me, I'll never understand how someone could let a machine get so tore up. These things aren't cheap brand new. I take care of mine like it's a sports car. I reckon some folks have money and just don't care.
Ignorance, laziness, some just don't care, even though they don't have the coin to buy another machine. These attitudes explain a whole lot as to why this country is fighting for it's existence.
I wonder what attracts mice to the area on top of the cylinder head on these engines. Both of these had a nest. I had the same exact type of nest on the Kohler engine on my John Deere , right in the same spot in front of the flywheel on the fins on the cylinder head.
like you say them fuel bowls rust after you remove the sealant on them, would you ever re-seal with some sort of chemical/paint protection to stop it from rusting? cheers
Also did you leave the old gas in the first mower? I have had 2 month old gas go bad already and only run on choke just like that. Normaly if just the main bottom jet is open the engines will run but they will surge and hunt, that's what makes me wonder if that gas wasn't combustable enough anymore.
Im kinda suprized that you didnt clean the tube as you did the bowl, good lesson for the majority. liike ur vids I need to get out there lookin for deals like you do. if i can ask a question Sir, tell me about pine-sol, do you add anything else.
Man how do you get these good mowers so cheap? In my neck of the woods a ride on could have half the mower missing and the other half rotting out and people are still trying to sell them for $400 bucks.
please when you open up a compartment thats full of debris and need to get the air hose, dont edit that scene out cause thats the most satisfying moment
Just a note, when your test start that type of engine with fuel in it the battery has to have power to it so the carbs fuel shut off allows fuel through, the charging system isn't usualy enough to open it. grant it that the carb was dirty but I got bit by one onetime where I cleaned the carb and it didn't need it lol
You know every time you change the tens on a motor especially a Briggs you lose the serial number, model number, and type number on that engine so the next person cannot get the right parts for it.

I'd have to say this is well said sir! He's a master at what he does, I love it!
Michael Festa Sr. Yes well said!!
well said sir
I love your experienced shade tree mechanic style. I have to say you are a dying breed. Keep up the great work.
I enjoy your videos very much and learn a lot as I am always tinkering with mowers, motors, etc..... Thank you

hope its good memories , and thanks for watchin for so long,
Your a very gifted man, for those of us that have little mechanical knowledge, we truly can benefit from your skills.
Well your just moving right along brother, cheers my friend
Thank you for yet another great tutorial! Appreciate it very much.

Awesome work! I cannot wait for you to tear into those 2 scooters in the background!! :) Keep the videos coming!
love those old craftsmans.

Mice seem to love mower engines, i suppose its a luxury appartment to mice :-D.
I allways enjoy your mower/engine tinkering, most are recoverable :-).
Nice...I was suprised to see you can fix the gear on those little starters (and that it's a pretty simple procedure.)
Seen that old Snapper push mower, brought back memories.
great instructional vid. thanks professor.
Going to salvage a good mower out of the deal. Nice job!
I have a lawn mower that was given to me, I have not done any testing, other than turning the engine to make sure it was not locked up. so I accepted it after that. Now, I know things to do to mine. I don't think there are wires messed with on this one. I appreciate the video on that lawn mower!

glad to here it
I've only ever used the real pine scented Pine Sol, which works great. Interested in seeing if the yellow works.
I did the same kind of engine replacement on my '93 Craftsman which did not have the carburetor solenoid switch. My fix was to file down the solenoid pin, and it runs fine. Oh yes it like to give a loud POP when I turn the engine off. Keep up the Great videos.
I like simple green in a ultrasonic cleaner for cabs. I got the larger one of the harbor freight ultrasonics and had pretty good luck with it so far.
Its lawn tractor guru time again ! Interesting as usual.
If you had served me that cup with the rusty sludge in it as a cup of coffee, I wouldn't have noticed in a rush :D
Love these vids, it's like hanging out in the shed with good ol mustie1 ;)
thats about it, and next time bring me a coffee, cream and sugar,
It will be interesting to see how well the pinesol works on the carbs.
your videos are perfect for morning coffee....here....the perfect sound effects ....normally I can hear a Rooster ....yelling for a date ...hehehe...your approach is ...don't over think something ...doing it by the numbers always works
No that I’m watching everything for a second time I can double check to like every time👍🏻👍🏻
Missed that little part of tweaking which ended up getting it running? Glad you took beautiful Lucy out so she wouldn't get all smoked up - haha.
cranked it one more time and it fired
Good video as always. Completely of topic: Those mouse nests are good to put in bumblebee homes, like an upsidedown flowerpot.
We used to make our own drift pins out of nails. We took handles of damaged drift pin, drilled a hole in the middle and put a set screw in the side. Grind the tip of the nail using a drill and sand paper. A grinding stone works too. Just case harden the nail once you get the OD.
Drains fuel then goes make coffee with a bit of extra kick in it , he's now firing on all cylinders .
Drats! Foiled by the old Pine-Sol carb cleaning experiment cliffhanger once again!
You have some Grate Videos my Friend
Another nice video bud. I too am a mechanic, but like watching how other people do things. You and I do things very similarly and it makes it fun to watch. I guess I'm strange. Lol. Oh, that nut was not fucked up at the factory.

DUDE, that old school VW bus is sooooooo cool!
My first rule of thumb is to measure the length and size of the crankshaft. You want those pulleys to line-up perfectly.
I'll tell ya ,you're the man to look up for those who don't know much about their lawn mowers , great detail and how to....great job !!
thanks
Nice batavus,quality from The Netherlands

Where do you get the little bottles with the hoses that you used to dump fuel into the carb?
You might consider keeping a mason jar around just for when you are checking the fuel in the carburator. Thank you for the education mustie1.
l ordered the fish oil
@@mustie1 hope it helps. It sure helped me a bunch. Let me know if it helps :-)

Can you stuff steel wool in those crevices to keep critters out? I do that on my camper with some success.

What jumpstarter u using? Thanks
I started up my tractor one time and quickly shut it off after seeing something fly out from the shroud. It was a mouse, it wrapped around the air cleaner screw
Gotta love that ethanol gas which sucks more water in than a tampon...
Hi Mustie, how often do you change the fuel filter on these mowers? Lot of people say it should be changed once a year. I have a 3 year old mower and never changed it once.
I like your cup American -- all yes
You have the fuel
line crimp tool that I use!
Hey Mustie, I hope you never have to move. You look like you have 30 years worth of garage parts to take with you, lol.
I have a question can you make 2 stroke fuel out of water and oil? And for mowers like that can you use jet fuel? Thanks.....
For the life of me, I'll never understand how someone could let a machine get so tore up. These things aren't cheap brand new. I take care of mine like it's a sports car. I reckon some folks have money and just don't care.

Park Tools sells a full set of nice quality, thin wrenches. Most any bicycle shop can order them.
l got lots of sacrificial lambs for the grinder
I wonder what attracts mice to the area on top of the cylinder head on these engines. Both of these had a nest. I had the same exact type of nest on the Kohler engine on my John Deere , right in the same spot in front of the flywheel on the fins on the cylinder head.
Safest and most dry area to nest. Until someone decides to fire up the engine....
Get a Micro drill bit set , 60 to 80 and a pin vise to clean out all those nasty jets you have been neglecting.
19:16 Black Gold! Texas tea!
What kinda lift table you run?
like you say them fuel bowls rust after you remove the sealant on them, would you ever re-seal with some sort of chemical/paint protection to stop it from rusting? cheers
not sure , id be afraid of peeling
oh man that Batavus do u gonna restore that moped
Scared the shit out of me when you switched the scene after 15:25
Also did you leave the old gas in the first mower? I have had 2 month old gas go bad already and only run on choke just like that. Cool
I use distilled white vinegar, water and a little dish soap in my ultrasonic cleaner.
Funny you would say that about the mouse surviving mankind. Scientists say all mammals are a decedent of a mouse/shrew like animal. The circle.
hey mustie1 had a question about seeing if u had a part
Nice job my 11 year old son fix I were riding mower
Wheres the Farnicastaff that use to hang on the west wall.....I don't see it in the shot scenes
Do you have a starter for a Briggs 19.5
One of my favorite things in the world to do is to take junk riders and make a good one out of them.
Pine-sol to clean a carb?! That carb must literally have caca lol,, that's a new one, wondering how it works
mustie, you need a cat or two keep that mouse problem down... that lower pulley looked tough
I could use a front and rear rim off the bad mower.....lol
please when you open up a compartment thats full of debris and need to get the air hose, dont edit that scene out cause thats the most satisfying moment
👍👍
You never pull the caps off of the batteries, to see if they have any water in them. Why is that?
You always have some snarky wizeazz comment to make about Mustie's videos. Why is that?
your know a lot of stuff how to fix them i like you volkswagan bus
thank God I'm Canadian!
gotta get ya a mug
Have you ever heard of a Gilson s twin 16 hp garden tractor

true,
Oh great!.........................Your dumping gas and I have a lit Gurkha cigar!
How did you know the old motor was bad?
I need a PTO switch for my Craftsman tractor
You know every time you change the tens on a motor especially a Briggs you lose the serial number, model number, and type number on that engine so the next person cannot get the right parts for it.
Just mix a good swallow of trans oil in ur fuel, been doin it 4 30 yrs now with 0 problens with carbs
Hate to see a good ol Murray parted out
