I live in Lorain, Ohio. Just out of high school i used to work as a mechanic in the buildings this shovel was made in. Thew shovel closed years ago unfortunately. Nice to see this still live on, great job saving old iron
The challenges you take on amaze me. You just do what you need to do to finish the job. I think Puff is a real sport to tackle the jobs with you. The crane ended up looking great.
It was always bitter-sweet when Matt took his viewers to The National Pike Steam Show. The Sweet was to see so many old machines workin the dirt. The Bitter was to see so much naked metal and rust. So good to see you getting some protection on your metal.
The extra coats of paint won’t hurt anything , in-fact it adds protection for further into the future. The best thing would be if they could get them under a roof . do they have a building fund or plans to work a deal to inspire others to paint their machines , hate seeing them rust away when could be prevented
Back in the 80's i worked in a body shop here in OK. We mainly worked on heavy trucks, about 50 /50%, road trucks and oil field trucks. I had the pleasure of running the sandblasting (yep sand that is how we did it back then). It was a nasty, exhausting, sometimes miserably hot job, but oddly satisfying job. 8 hours in a gravel parking lot, wearing coveralls, a hood and respirator when its 105, sucks! But it was satisfying seeing how quickly you could transform an old vacuum trailer or concrete pump truck! Nasty rusty to nice and clean in a few hours. We had a 1944 IR compressor on a skid mount. It had a Flathead Chevy inline 6, that thing was a beast. Yours reminded me of it, you just have the younger brother. That thing would run an 1-1/2" blast hose at 200 psi at barely above idle. I have no idea what happened to that compressor, hopefully someone like you has it. That thing would have made your blasting chore so much quicker, but it would have also eaten a ton a of gas and media! We used to fuel it from 55 gallon drums!
Great video - my grandfather ran Atlas Equipment in Pittsburgh and probably involved with selling Frank Bryan the 820 - my father retired as the VP of Sales for Lorain - video brings back some great memories - thank you!
WOW! Came out beautiful!! ❤ A lot of work, but I know you enjoyed EVERY minute of it. That second orange came out right! it’s a great looking unit. You should be very proud!
Nice job blasting and painting, glad you wore protection, because that abrasive isn't good for ya, but there could be lead, or who knows what else is in that old paint. Painting outdoors sure beats being inside spraying that rig. G-d bless.
I'm 74 in a couple months and this is one fine job of bring back those colors... the one I did run a bit had a Murphy Diesel engine.... one huge oil pit as it slobbered all over itself. ... I truly believe the Cat engine is a great swap for them as Murphy engines were big but no real power and hard starting when worn out
First time watching your channel. I really enjoyed this one. The second orange was definitely the right choice. It made me smile when you showed the finish product, looking like she is ready to work...beautiful! Great job of editing as well. I'm Looking forward to seeing more of your content. Great job. Thanks
I found your channel because of Matt @Diesel Creek. Now I'm going to have an issue with which one to watch first. My life was complicated enough, thank you. However, Matt does have not one but two Autocars and you don't have any "B" model Macks. Although you should have a vintage 81 series Mack for your Talbert. Nuff said, love the videos.
Long time coming for this video! Y’all did a great job on it. I see you moved the truck far enough away. My dodge has some yellow specs on a black paint job when the wind picked up one day.
That came out great! Do you oil or grease thr cables? They usta do that where i lived. I guess to stop rust and maintain the strength of the metal. I guess it also reduces friction as the cables side across one another as the freed on and off the reels.
Yes, but any oil or grease on the cables inevitably attracts dust and dirt which may not have been be a serious issue as long as these machines were used regularly, but which will accumulate over time on 'museum pieces' that are only get used a few days per year and may cause trouble then.
nice job there mate the second orange is a better chose i think the other one had to much red in it and if you are wondering red in that type of paint does not cover very well looks like the misses has had enough i think you both deserve a bit of a rest now Cheers
Why would you sandblast something that has thousands of open bushings and open gears, open sprockets and chains, cables, hundreds of greased and oil lubricated parts ? ? ? The sand is going to damage and wear out everything. I think sandblasting the crane shovel was a terrible thing to do. I have blasted with a pressure pot compressor many times before. I know how this stuff goes. Sand goes everywhere. Even in your crack! You can not protect these bearings and parts from the grit. In this case, acid etching, using a needle scaler, and a grinder with a wire wheel would have been a better choice. ---Doozer
Sam, as you possibly know, black absorbs heat. In the heat of the summer weather, you'll be roasting yourself in that cabin. This means that the paint needed to be different from that black. You'll know what I mean by this relatively soon.
Yes, except after black absorbs the heat and increases the temperature past 118°f, that's the temperature when all life ends. I was going to add more to that sentence, except I don't remember it. The concentration I have isn't doing so well. What else is there to type to you about? There are only two or three plants that are able to grow in the desert, which are cactus and a flower that I don't know the name of. What's the other plant? There might not be any more.
As for black on a van, you'll roast yourself inside of it. The water inside of you after you go into it will be sweated out of you in a few minutes, depending on the temperature inside that cabin. Did you ever see a black van? I don't believe any person is that foolish to do that. That would absolutely be ridiculous.
A great ambassador for The Thew Shovel Co.! I know where there is a Thew Machine #69 sitting in the bush on a section of train track. It has traveled in the early days of Panama and then early Yukon, working on Bear Creek. It is still in amazing shape with an enclosed cab over and steel chain drive. 😶🌫🥸🖖
It is nice to see paint on put on the old stuff.
that is probably the best "quick and dirty" blast and paint job i have ever see, even with the misshap with the paint you are all naturals!
I live in Lorain, Ohio. Just out of high school i used to work as a mechanic in the buildings this shovel was made in. Thew shovel closed years ago unfortunately. Nice to see this still live on, great job saving old iron
I seen old machine with old and fading paint but now I think your the only one with a new paint job
The challenges you take on amaze me. You just do what you need to do to finish the job. I think Puff is a real sport to tackle the jobs with you. The crane ended up looking great.

I agree have to preserve more of the shovels there

Very pleased that you have helped preserve this machine for the future
Those decals and paint look great! Can't wait to see it in person
Thanks!
Great video - my grandfather ran Atlas Equipment in Pittsburgh and probably involved with selling Frank Bryan the 820 - my father retired as the VP of Sales for Lorain - video brings back some great memories - thank you!
Wow that’s very cool. Yes it was bought from Atlas I have the invoice for it
WOW! Came out beautiful!! ❤ A lot of work, but I know you enjoyed EVERY minute of it. That second orange came out right! it’s a great looking unit. You should be very proud!
She’s gorgeous, great guys!
Thank you!
Looking great 👍
Good size project, it came out pretty decent considering the struggles you had. Thanks for the tag along video young man.
They are not runs,, they are gravity flow indicators.
Nice job blasting and painting, glad you wore protection, because that abrasive isn't good for ya, but there could be lead, or who knows what else is in that old paint. Painting outdoors sure beats being inside spraying that rig. G-d bless.
Sam seems to be a fine young hardworking man. I enjoy you sharing your projects with us. Good job on the shovel.
Thanks for watching!

It looks great!
Came out nice bro, looks like it was just driven out of the showroom. Safe travels. Ken.
Nice looking machine. I think it turned out great for an on site paint job.
Thank you I appreciate it
Got here from Diesel Creek too.. glad l did, nice job on the old gal!😊
Nice job, made a big difference!
Looks great, nice work
Thank you!
Looks great !
Thank you!
That coat of makeup sure got her prettied up.

Can never have enough old trucks!
@@ScrappyIndustries You can have a load of trucks, and motorized equipment, BUT how many can you actually play with, that is the determinate!
A beautiful job Sam.!!!
Looks good!
Long time coming for this video! Y’all did a great job on it. I see you moved the truck far enough away. My dodge has some yellow specs on a black paint job when the wind picked up one day.
Thank you! I didn’t notice any orange on it anyway
It looks great!!!
Man, what a job . Starting to look great !
Great job it looks awesome!
That old girl turned out real well I seen it down at the show nice job
Thank you!
Blood Well Done Sam and company
Come Scrapping with us on the back
That was not easy work. You did quite and learned along the way. 👍👍👍
WOW - she looks great!!
You mention work - what’s your day job?
I think it turned out terrific. I'm sure you can see some issues up close, but hey, it's construction equipment, not a car!
Nice job!
Thanks!
A black roof would look good with the orange
Looks sharp 😊
Thanks!
"CODY! what do you think?!"
I don't know man, I haven't watched the video yet! 😂
Update: I watched it! Paint job looks awesome, especially happy you brought back the lettering for the Bryan company! 🎉
😂😂 I’m glad you enjoyed it! Our black lab is named Otis and I usually call him Odie
Hah! Figures I'd hear Cody instead of Odie.
I came over from DieselCreek after the dozer video, good stuff so far!
Matt from deisal creek pointed me over to your channel.
Deisal?
Nice!
Thank you. I like it.
Matt is drooling in his deams over this machine. 😅😅😅😅😅😊
Great job
Last thing to worry about is the quality of the paint job vs preserving the metal thats left
That came out great!

Well that was like watching paint dry😁
Must have been at Pike showgrounds, I hope you got to take their D9 for aride, she's a beauty
The coolers are pretty simple. They use venturi cooling. That set-up is a million times better than respirators.
Perhaps the compressor needs sandblasting and paint 🎨
CAD (cardboard assisted design )paint job looks good at tennr miles away lol😂😂 paint & blasting can be challenging at times 😊😊
nice job there mate the second orange is a better chose i think the other one had to much red in it and if you are wondering red in that type of paint does not cover very well looks like the misses has had enough i think you both deserve a bit of a rest now Cheers
Much better paint color!
Shes a beauty. Not perfect but looks good .
2:40 vortex tube
Why does she get the sanding job?
Because she’s a pro!

You don't the it's going to get dirty during operation?
I wanted to sub, but then I seen that garbage-truck you drive,🧐, lol.
Sam, as you possibly know, black absorbs heat. In the heat of the summer weather, you'll be roasting yourself in that cabin. This means that the paint needed to be different from that black. You'll know what I mean by this relatively soon.
As in Is that why no one wants a black van? Moisture not a problem, it baked out!
Yes, except after black absorbs the heat and increases the temperature past 118°f, that's the temperature when all life ends. I was going to add more to that sentence, except I don't remember it. Yep, I prefer lighter colors for heat reflection and being able to see what you're doing in low light conditions.
Gotta be cautious about carbonmonoxide with breathing apparatus like that.

To move it, a section of rail was disconnected and leapfrogged forward and connected. ruclips.net/video/nrM_YuA1Rcg/видео.html
Looks great!
