      Great job you did here!
Doing a natural pigmented red is not for everyone and you nailed it!
I used to be a professional cardetailer aswell and did alot of jobs like this.
Thing is though, as I said, this is a natural pigmented red color, which was used often on older cars.
If I'm not wrong, they only started using chemical-colored red in the late 90's, which do have a clearcoat and will never fade.
Eventually these natural pigments will fade again over time, especially when sitting in the sun.
You've done a great job, and don't be so harsh on yourself, since it's the old natural colored paint that is screwing you over ;-)

I think you massively under sold yourself on this, the improvement you made was night and day. On cars like this there is literally no point in doing muliple stage correction to the paint. The owner of this car and even a prospective buyer (if it was up for sale) would only look at how shiny the paint is rather than looking for defects.
Excellent results and a thoroughly enternaining upload as always 👍

It wasnt perfect for sure in fact some of it was poor by detailing standards yer I had a bit of a guilt trip because I did consider the possibility of another pass over the entire car but just didnt want to put that sort of time into it.

    • @999thenewman
      @999thenewman 5 лет назад +7

You did great. An additional pass wouldn't make sense because you risk ripping away more paint. However, It's always a good idea to top it all with a synthetic spray wax for that extra protection and gloss. Yes, I realize now this is a single-stage paint. Yep, this is the streamlined cost-cutting we've come to expect on today's cars. How sad.

You are a wonderful neighbor. I hope the owner appreciated it. My son and I decided to clean up and polish my 1989 Chrysler New Yorker several years ago. The car had been in desert conditions ever since new, and the paint was a single stage white that was very oxidized. We spent about a total of 30 hours on it. First we sanded it with 800 wet or dry sandpaper, then went to 1000 grit, then 1200 grit. We used a buffer next with rubbing compound, then switched to polishing compound, and finally a swirl remover. When we waxed it, the car was amazing. It didn't have any of the factory orange peel look to it. The former owner saw it and was amazed also.

I had bought a 1981 Dodge Mirada a few years back (before I started leaning about machine polishing and proper detailing). The car was a medium red with a white "faux convertible" vinyl top; paint was a single stage acrylic enamel. I bought the car because it was in excellent mechanical shape, and the interior was close to perfect. The hood (bonnet) and trunk (boot) were covered in small black specs. I assumed these to be surface rust, and had already figured that the car would need a repaint.. I took some pictures of the surfaces, and posted them to a couple of sites dedicated to this type of car. A few agreed on it being rust, some said it may have been tree sap with dirt embedded in it, others said it may have been insect droppings, or iron contamination. One day, while talking to the next door neighbour, i just casually rubbed a moistened finger over some of the black spots, and they began to dissolve, and when they dissolved, they turned brown. I got a water soaked rag, rubbed it on the block spots, and they dissolved and came off. I then came up with the following plan of action: a) wash all of the painted exterior surfaces with a strong dish soap and water solution; b) using Meguiar's Mirror Glaze #03 medium cut polish (really, a compound, went over all the painted surfaces by hand; c) repeated the same with Meguiar,s Mirror zGlaze #09 finishing polish. The paint from an almost orange color to a nice medium red, close ti what was shown in the sales brochures. I unded up using a bag if the Costco microfiber cloths, and pretty much threw them away after, as they were permanently stained from the oxidized paint that was removed. I did later go the whole was,h clay bar, chemical decontamination, machine compound & polish route. I think Inwould have pretty much done the same thing today, with the possible exception of using a machine polisher with the Meguiar's #03/#09, and used cheapest pads, as they would have to have been thrown away afterwards.

In 92 I had a red 88 205CTi which developed badly faded paint, particularly bad for a 4/5 year old car. I took it in for an interior valet which I did for all my cars ( it didn’t need it, I just took great care of my cars ). I went to pick it up and the guy mentioned the paint, I told him I’d tried to T-Cut out unsuccessfully and had given up. He got a bottle of AutoGlym polish, poured a bit on the bonnet. He machine polished the product on the bonnet and suddenly it appeared brand new. He told me it would cost £50 to do the full exterior.
Bargain, go ahead. Picked it up 24 hours later and it was mint, inside the red/charcoal interior was unmarked, outside looked like I’d just collected it brand new. All it cost was £100.
This reminded me of that old car, you did a very generous thing for your neighbours 👏👏👏, they must have been thrilled…….

FIRST - YOU ARE A MAGICIAN!!! I cannot believe the difference you made to the car!!! Huge respect 👍
SECOND - HOW CAN SOMEONE neglect a car THAT MUCH????!
In today's world of automated car washes and so many wash booths and car wash salons, you really have to be very very irresponsible to allow your car to deteriorate like that?! You don't have to be a detailing freak, but take your car thru an automated car wash once a month and it will NEVER EVER look as bad as this!!

I heard it was when the EU started to ban oil based paint for environmental reasons and the early water based stuff was basically rubbish. The same reason why yellow cars disappeared for a few years, they couldn't make a stable water based yellow paint.

@Brad D: You probably know more about detailing a car than I do so I really appreciate the "talking" which gives me the ability to know why and how products are used on an old car. Mine is 1996, red, no clear coat left -- 22 years old -- and although it's old I like to drive around in a car that looks like it's loved.
Now I know that "ceramic" polishes won't do diddly-squat on my old car and I won't allow my detailer to up-sell me on a product that won't do anything but increase the price of the work for no good reason. Yeah, talking is good for my pocket.

@@davidboyd6523 I know it's been over a year since you commented, but for real, the person probably had the car parked in a shed, and hadn't driven it in years. That doesn't mean they don't take care of their house 😂😂
