This is my favorite VH song of all time because it transports me back to 1985 every time I hear it. I was 14 years old and I was just beginning to learn to play guitar. Fortunately, I had a fantastic guitar teacher who was big into jazz guitar. I told him I wanted to learn rock guitar. So the first song he taught me was Drop Dead Legs. I will never forget him playing this song note for note in front of me and I was totally blown away. He wrote everything down for me in tab. He then said to me, you have one week to learn this song and I want you to play it back for me next week. I was sweating bullets to say the least lol. I locked myself in my bedroom for the next week after school and played this song over and over again to learn all the nuances. The next week came and he said, let’s see what you got. So I nervously played the song along with the tape player we had. I finished and I said, how was that? He said, are you interested in being in a band with me? I said, are you serious? He said yes, I need to talk with your mom. We ended up forming a band together and I was playing professionally at 14. I will cherish these memories till the day I die!
Eddie was the ultimate innovator. He taught everyone to open their minds and expand on what is possible with guitar. Everybody took a little piece of eddie, and put their own spin on it, and made it their own. Without eddie, we may never have had so many great bands/songs, and i would argue that he was probably responsible for more people picking up the guitar, than anyone else. As far as I'm concerned, just because of this, he is at the top of the list of greatest rock guitar players ever. VH was literally the soundtrack of my youth. Sucks he's gone with so many other greats. R.I.P. King Edward. 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸
I think Dave did well here compared to other trainwrecks I have seen. Eddie was up dialled right up in the mix too which helped offset Dave. My god Eddie just puts this over the fence gone. Awesome 1984 was a life changing record for me.
Damn.. Edward made it look so freaking easy, then he flashes that mischievous grin at the end... It really sucks He's gone, he brought a lot of joy to alot of ppl with his Guitar wizardry...
June 8th 1980 backstage Leicester De Montfort Hall. DLR pours me(!) a vodka and orange for my 16th birthday. The best birthday ever and I'm way older now!
I was at that show. It was incredible seeing VH live. Eddie was unbelievable. I'm so happy I got to see him play before he passed away. Cheers to Eddie and Van Halen 🍻
Edward Van Halen!! Always the consummate pro. Putting out the hits. Dave’s voice was all over the place with his vaudeville act and Ed kept grooving and looking like this was the best time he’d ever had. The world is definitely poorer for the loss of Edward Van Halen.
@@scott7521 let’s see… The 2004 tour minus a lifetime of performing [carry the two]… Still seems his body of work is exceptional. Not sure why you’re so bent out of shape over 2004 (I missed it and caught the 2007 tour) but it has no influence over those of us who recognize his massive talent.
So jealous you got to see Eddie freestyling this close haha. Always loved this song and how it was inspired by Back in Black from ACDC. Such a great groove that rocks me senseless. Damm i miss him.
I wish that Wolfie had more time to play with his dad, uncle, and Diamond Dave. Imagine being able to click on a computer, and saying, ' Yeah, I was in Van Halen." ?!?! The kid has memories for 10 lifetimes!
He always looked to be having so much fun from where i stand. Best in the world. Love you Eddie, rest in peace, we will jam one day when i get there, wait for me!
one thing I love about this era is how many parents and their kids I see working together. I've seen Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, Art Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Peter Cetera, Art Garfunkel and countless other parents working with their kids.
Proof positive that they could have played it back on the 1984 tour. It just seems completely ridiculous why they wouldn't have done that back then. Top Jimmy is in the weirdest tuning that has ever been thought of and the solo is in standard it would have been a complete mess I get that one. I'm really not sure why I drop dead legs was not a thing in 1984 and basically not the first song they should have played to open shows since.
this song is so badass to play, you can play that riff with slides (3 / 5 - 3 / 5) or with the whammy bar pre bending the notes ( /5 / 5) and it sounds baddass.
Scarves and hankies ain't gonna save the day, Dave. Eddie dressed like he has to do a little work on the fence today, and Dave dressed like he has dance recital at the YMCA. Eeek
This was a thing of beauty! Sounded fantastic and I give some credit to Dave here too. A lot of times he goes off script and brings the performance down. Not so much the case here. And that outro solo by Ed... The master showing why he's the goat. The original has him soloing over a rhythm track and I always wondered how he could pull that off live and have it sound good. Well, I still don't know how he makes it sound awesome, but he did it right here.
The world isn't the same without Eddie Van Halen !
Correct. It just isn't.
No it is not!!!
New this could happen...
Just Never Envisioned it, something's you think are just never going to end.
Everyone listen to me I know who is similar to EVH there are 2 way #1 George Lynch and #2 Satchel steel panther
@@marshallskull6132 George Lynch is great !
The "groove" of this song is my favorite of their catalog.
Even at this age, Alex Van Halen is the most grooving, kick ass drummer ever

Talked to mom, eh? Lol Son, your mom sure cares a lot about your education! 😂 jealous, still no band for me.. Im 14, backwards.
That is an awesome story bro.....this is also my fav VH song......one of many 80's transport vehicles back to the past!!!
I loved reading this!!!!
Thanks for sharing Joe C. What an amazing experience.
love to hear u guys...any lin ks :)
Just look at the pure, unbridled joy on Ed's face when he plays those riffs.
Eddie’s smile as he plays says it all.
Damn, I wish Dave could still sing otherwise VH would still be a top notch band today. I love Dave but clearly, his best years are behind him.
Yeah, it..... It hurts(no sarcasm), and it shows to really live for the day, especially because there's nothing(musically) today.
And He looks like an over paid Vegas lounge singer.
@@jackknauff7973 .Because it's exactly what he is - live at the flamingo
Such a shame Eddie’s gone. RIP

There are too many guitarist but only one genius: Eddy! The one and only.
Forget the guitar playing, listen to that tone! NOBODY sounded like that
@@seanmurphy26 never. That first record broke people’s minds in more ways than they can process
A lot of older artists struggle to play their old material Eddie was playing it sicker than ever ,he was sounding so great!
Dave isn't doing that well.
No they don’t. They struggle rinsing it but not play it.
Watching Eddie play is amazing. He always looks like he is having the time of his life playing. So incredible and such a loss to music. RIP Eddie

1:57 lol
Yeah I thought Dave did well in this one for sure didn't try for those high notes which he obviously can't do anymore he should stay in the low range
Agree, as much as I like DLR I hated that he seemed not to care and put an effort into playing the song right close to original.
What??? Dave seriously needed to pass the mic here.
Did well??😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Damn.. Edward made it look so freaking easy, then he flashes that mischievous grin at the end... It really sucks He's gone, he brought a lot of joy to alot of ppl with his Guitar wizardry...
Saw VH in Washington state on this tour. There will never be another EVH, truly one of a kind.
Glad I got to see em on this last tour ever. Not knowing we’d all lose the great Eddie Van Halen. Ugh he will forever be the MAN!!
Rock in peace, Edward 🙏🏻
Eddie Van Halen lives through his music! The music will never go away!!!

Eddie is King!!!!!!
Eddie Plays their Music with a smile, He’s Playin so easy!
Really cool to see these guys having fun, sounding great and Eddie making it look easy. He was an absolute master
Sounds good?
A virtuoso for sure. One of the few that just "has it".
I was at that show. It was incredible seeing VH live. Eddie was unbelievable. I'm so happy I got to see him play before he passed away. Cheers to Eddie and Van Halen 🍻
Eddie sounds great.
Eddie happy as hell playing it RIP my hero
One of the greatest licks in rock an roll. History
Back to 80's...best and gold era of music..and my life...RIP KING EVH...💙💚💜💖
Beautiful guitar,Eddie. We will not forget 🙏🏼
So cool to see & hear EVH go nuts freelancing the outro solo!....1-800-BAD-ASS!...maybe the most free form guitar solo we've ever seen & heard live!

Holy shot brutal vocals from Dave
Is it just me or does ANYTHING Edward Van Halen plays turn to gold!?? Man, what a tone and what time
What an awesome performance! EVH
Great and under appreciated song off 1984
Love This Van Halen Song...Drop Dead Legs IS A Classic!!!!...Cheers from Damo.

So blessed that they toured with Dave before Ed passed
Edwards face, lit with joy as he plays guitar.... Makes me smile, too. I know that joy.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN....I GIVE YOU THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN ....R.I.P KING EDWARD
Love Eddie Van Halen / VAN HALEN FOREVER!!

This is another great song by VanHalen!
these live moments caught really are fortunate to capture the genius at work in his habitat!
Eddie was such a JOY to watch doing what he was born to do. What a career he had.

Thank God we have videos like these to watch whenever we need to feel TRUE HAPPINESS.

Eddie said that this was his favourite song regardless if it became a hit or not.

Sounding good, so is Dave. Sick riff.
Love that snare sound
Eddie was on fire .
Yeah when you turn 65 it's hard 2 carry a tune. Idiots. Rock & Roll will never Die with classics like this.

that tone
