    This band is beyond amazing. I was given 'Apollo 18' at random, by my grandparents, for Christmas, when I was in the 7th grade, back in 1993, and I fell in love with it. I've been a lifelong fan ever since. No matter what phase in my life I've gone through since then, this band has never failed to hit me in that certain spot, and after all this time, they still remain my all time favorite. Thank you both, John and John, for providing me with the soundtrack to my life.

  • @silversalmon9909
    @silversalmon9909 4 года назад +29

    Here is my interpretation, though this may be disconnected slightly from the visuals of the song, because i usually listen to it without the visuals;
    It is a song about forgiveness, in a sense. And it is a very human, and common experience. The lines;
    "Oh, I'm taking names
    But I'm not doing much
    With the names that I'm taking"
    -in particular caught me off guard. The character is making sure to remember the names and I would assume faces of those that they feel have insulted them. However, they arent doing much with the names that they are taking. This feels as if it is more a thing for them, they aren't going to hunt these people down, the character isnt going to confront these people about the insults they feel they have suffered, they are simply keeping the names for the purpose of fueling their own, internal anger. However this is a normal thing everyone has participated in. Nobody wants to just "let go," as we have experienced a great injustice, and so feel as if we have a right to stay mad. Furthermore
    "They call me the greatest
    But those cheers can be quiet
    So I listen close
    I listen close"
    -is conveying that not only do they remember those names and remember those insults for nothing but maintaining their own personal anger and bitterness, but they actively seek it out. Perhaps not actively seek it out, but after having experienced this sarcasm before, it appears that they come to inherently expect everyone they meet to treat them in the same way. You can see their bitterness bleeding into unhealthy territories. However this is something we have all done. We have all experienced an insult by someone, and felt insecure enough to wonder whether other people, even those completely unrelated, feel the same way about you. However, with the lines
    "Yes I'm taking notes
    But those notes aren't helping
    The ink washes away"
    -I think it is said that the character is either continuing to harbor that hate within themselves against the ones who have insulted them, or actively making a choice to treat them with the same level of disrespect that they feel they have experienced, with mention of "taking notes." However, i think the character cant help but move on, in a sense. They are taking notes, either continuing to fuel their hate, or choosing to also disrespect the people who have insulted them, however the ink washes away. Washes away specifically is a calm, unstoppable description. I think its that they cant maintain that fire of hate, its too much energy to continue to be angry, and instead, simply let go. Not necessarily forgive, but decide to not put the energy towards that bitterness. I think this is reinforced with
    "G-O-A-T
    It washes away
    It washes away"
    -Now not only is their hate not having any energy dedicated towards it, and thus is dying, but also the hurt they feel from the insults. I think whilst the negative emotions they feel regarding hate and bitterness are washing away, the negative emotions they feel about being insulted are also being washed away. We have all put so much energy towards hating someone, and reminding ourselves of the shitty things that person has done to us, but more often then not, that anger simply washes away, those emotions and energy are just let go. That is not to say we forget about injustices we have experienced, just that we no longer have to be obsessive about it.
    Now if i combined the fucking crazy ass visuals into this analysis, fuck i could go on forever. Even at a backhand glance the blood pouring from him could symbolize how this washing away of negative emotions could itself lead to apathy and more emotional damage, not dealing with or removing yourself from the source of trauma.

      I think it's about what Trump's presidency has done to america. Seeing as the song was just recently written for dial a song in 2018
      The song is called "the greatest" as in reference to world's greatest narcissist. Trump's presidency has caused many people to take downa list of names of people both in government as well as their personal lives they no longer tolerate because they can see more clearly who you support now.
      These revelations stay with us like needles shoved into a voodoo doll causing us pain and we can't remove them ourselves.
      Also I feel they used Nick offerman for this piece because of how recognizable he is with the Ron Swanson look. Ron swanson while one of my favorite characters on parks an rec is definitely a closeted narcissist. So having "swanson" as a stand in for trump, explains why he starts bleeding through his shirt as the inner narcissist(buffalo bob) in his head makes mistakes putting together his metaphorical skin suit.
      I also see a lot of buffalo bob in this piece.

      I dont think it's a voodoo doll, per se. I think it's a guy in a very convincing ron swanson suit (ala Buffalo Bill) that might have caught himself with the needle a few times.

    I'm trying to wrap my head around this video....
    So a guy, on a stage, probably someone of note as signified by being portrayed by Nick Offerman, complaining about how he's not very good, yet he _still_ has netted himself a creepy murderous stalker that wants to assume his life......
    Did I pretty much nail that on the head, or am I missing something...

    • @bachpham6862
      @bachpham6862 3 года назад +10

      I think Nick Offerman is playing the imagined persona of the stalker: he wore the mask and try to imagine himself as being that famous showman, maybe to feel better about himself. (Lyrics: I'm taking names, but I'm not doing much with the names that I am taking).
      Or maybe the "stalker" is the star himself when old, and is desperately trying to live again a fetishized, delusional version of his past (he thought he was the greatest, but had he been the greatest, why has he fallen to such a level, and it kills his pride

    • @badwrongfun5541
      @badwrongfun5541 3 года назад +10

      the "stalker" here likely isn't literal. What if the speaker is suffering from imposter syndrome? He just feels like a fake and desperately wants to feel like the image that other people have of him. the lyrics defintely suggest somebody with self esteem issues. And he doesn't believe the praise he's being given.

    • @CherylWickham
      @CherylWickham 2 года назад

      I think the "stalker" guy represents a bully. They are way more obsessed with you, than you are with them. Meanwhile, the bullied character (Nick), is like "They call me the greatest (mock me), but he's "not doing much with the names that he's taking". "it washes away".

      Great points, every one. Thanks for sharing your opinions.
      You know, it was several weeks after I first saw the video, but it took me *way too long* to notice that the holes in his chest weren't bullet holes like he'd been shot between scenes by someone in the audience, but each spot is a point where the stalker guy has stabbed a voodoo doll with pins!
