Here are some fun facts. This movie was supposed to be a sequel to the 2003 Hulk movie and despite the 2003 Hulk movie not being Cannon to the MCU there are elements to the story that applied to this version of Bruce Banner. For example Betty hasn't seen Bruce in 5 years since the lab accident. Bruce has no control over the Hulk action he's his own personality until Dr. Sterns treatment which gave Bruce the ability to control the hulk's actions only if he's the one who triggers the transformation. The Hulk has the ability to jump into atmosphere. The hulk's base level strength is 350 tons which is about the same weight of the empire State building. There are other Marvel characters that are stronger then the Hulk but due to the fact that the hulk gets stronger the longer a fight goes on or the angry he gets so give me enough time he can defeat any opponent. Not to mention his instant healing ability.

The reason why the intro was so quick is because this isn't the first Hulk movie... The original movie was called HULK (2003) where it had the full back story and everything but it didn't do so well so they then made the Incredible Hulk which was like soft reboot.

The reason for the warp-speed origin at the start was that a very large portion of the 2008 audience was already very familiar with the Hulk's origin, even if they never read the comics.
There was the 1980s series, with Lou Ferrigno (pizza-eating guard) as the Hulk and Bill Bixby (seen on the TV in Brazil, early on) as Banner. This is where Bixby's "you wouldn't like me when I'm angry" catchphrase [that Banner mangles in Portuguese] comes from.
Then in the 1990s, there were TV films that continued the series, and there were constant Hulk animated series.
And in 2003 (only 5 years previous) there was the non-MCU movie "Hulk" (dir. Ang Lee, Eric Bana as Banner), which is why this one is "The Incredible Hulk". So they zipped through the parts that many knew (radiation, angry, green, strong) and only highlighted the new elements (Banner was trying to alter chemistry rather than a random exposure, the military wants super-soldiers) later.
For the films, things that happened over a number of years in the comics are necessarily compressed. (For example, Happy and Pepper don't appear until the 7th Iron Man story, and Jim Rhodes doesn't show up until the 1970s; Stane was not a betraying partner, but a villainous corporate raider who debuted later in the series yet.) So it amuses me that this film gets a big "reveal" out of Betty being Gen. Ross's daughter, when that is established from the get-go in the comics. I mean, literally before Bruce first transforms we get the general disliking that Betty is dating a "milksop scientist" when he thinks she should marry a military man. Nicely reworked.

That 3rd transformation always gets me with how painful it is for Bruce Banner to transform into Hulk. Also, one of Hulk's abilities is that he draws more strength from his anger. The angrier he gets, the more powerful he becomes. It shows that Hulk can bench-press a tank without breaking a sweat, but his strength is virtually limitless. To answer any questions, Bruce Banner's grasp over Hulk depends on HOW he transforms. If it happens voluntarily, Hulk has more of an ability to reason and comprehend things. But if it happens through uncontrollable stimuli, like anger, Hulk is the living equivalent of a wrecking ball.

The Hulk's origin is essentially this: Bruce as a child had an abusive father, who thought Bruce was a 'monster' because of his seemingly unnatural intellect as a young kid. This caused Bruce to develop dissociative identity disorder to cope, repressing his anger and his rage into this persona. Bruce then had to watch as his father beat his mother to death in a fit of rage, causing him to further suppress and channel his anger into this other identity. This is never really gone into in the MCU at all, primarily because there've been several other Hulk origin films/series (most notably Ang Lee's Hulk from 2003)
In the comics his alternate identity is unleashed after his exposure to radiation from an an experimental gamma bomb, absorbing huge amounts of gamma radiation after rushing to rescue a teenager from the testing field who was dared by his friends to go out there. Now, upon becoming enraged, the gamma radiation triggers a physical transformation and suppresses his normal identity, letting THE HULK loose, a creature of pure anger.
In the MCU the military is trying to re-create the super soldier serum that was used to create Captain America in the 40's, and were unsure what to use to trigger it (as Vita-Rays™ were used in the original process), thus gamma exposure, which results in Bruce's transformation (instead of the bomb story).
A unique ability of his transformation is that the Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets. In theory he can have infinite strength if you enrage him enough. This is why Abomination is beating him at the start of their fight, but the longer it goes on and the angrier Hulk gets, the tables turn.
The move he uses to put out the flames on the helicopter is a signature move from the comics known as the Thunder Clap, creating a supersonic shockwave (basically a sonic boom).
Mr. Blue, aka Dr. Samuel Stearns, becomes The Leader in the comics, one of Hulk's primary antagonists, who gains super-intellect and the ability to generate gamma-ray blasts from his body.

There are many call backs and references to The Incredible Hulk TV Series of the 70’s.
Other than the cameo of Lou Ferrigno; the original Hulk, as a security guard; there were others:
    - The chair Banner sits in when doing his Gamma experiment and the red DANGER sign is based off of the chair used in the pilot episode of the show.
    - Culver University was based off of The Culver Institute where Banner worked in the Pilot Episode.
    - As Banner was changing channels, he turns on an episode of “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”; which starred Bill Bixby.
    - Each time that Banner hulked out, you saw his eyes turn green. On the series, they had Banner’s eyes turn white.
    - During the fight between the Hulk and the Army, two college students witness the battle. One of the students was Jack McGee; a nod to the character played by Jack Colvin in the TV show. Both McGee’s were reporters for newspapers.

"Marvel Movie " is often confusing because of the history of the movie rights between the Disney, Sony, Fox, and Universal.
The Marvel Logo is at the beginning of tons of movies, but many aren’t related to the MCU.
Most superhero movies that have been released since 2000, are based on Marvel comic books. But Marvel themselves didn’t start actually making their own movies until the MCU in 2008.
Marvel went bankrupt in 1996 so they had to sell the movie rights of their most popular characters for barely any money. The studios who bought those rights would go on to make tons of money off these unfairly cheap purchases.

    If you haven't been told already, you really need to watch the Marvel One-Shot mini-films as part of your MCU journey. They are short side stories that provide some of the connective tissue between the main films. But they need to be watched after specific films with which they connect;
"The Consultant" can be watched after "The Incredible Hulk" or "Iron Man 2."
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" can be watched between "Iron Man 2" and "Thor."
"Item 47" takes place immediately after "The Avengers."
"Agent Carter" takes place immediately after "Captain America: The First Avenger" (but wasn't released until "Iron Man 3."
"All Hail the King" takes place after Iron Man 3 (but was released with "Thor: The Dark World.")
Some reaction channels include the One-Shots, most don't. But they provide some of the connective tissue that unites the MCU a little more strongly. Plus, "All Hail the King" has important ramifications for one of the films in Phase 4 of the MCU.

Nice reaction - you might like to watch the 2003 Hulk as a comparison - the filmmaker is Ang Lee, known initially for arthouse drama, including Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, before breaking out w the classic wuxia Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - the early 2000s they were still experimenting w the superhero movie template - Lee approached Hulk as pop Greek tragedy, fascinating stuff - the producers weren't quite satisfied w the box office, so they did this more traditional film, which did similar box office
    - both this film and the 2003 film have a very strong romance at the center - Betty's even in some ways the protagonist of the 2003 film - I often feel the central female characters are summarily dismissed during fan discussion of reboots or revivals, tho they're often as crucial to a film's story and emotional impact as the villain - Bruce's connection to Betty is a defining aspect of his character, and both Liv Tyler and Jennifer Connelly do excellent work in the fairly strong roles they're given in these films -
    - in any case, after these 2 Hulk films, the question still hung in the air about how to "solve" Hulk onscreen (I like both these films a lot, and they're well regarded, but they didn't hit the box office stratosphere) - the MCU would solve it to everyone's satisfaction several years later w the Avengers, using Hulk now as a standout supporting character, and this seemed to strike a perfect balance
    - for Marvel, the most iconic characters traditionally are Spidey, Hulk, and Fantastic Four - which is exactly why Marvel had earlier sold the rights to these heroes - which is why they started their MCU w more second tier heroes like Thor and Iron Man, since they still had those rights - and then, once the MCU really took off, ppl were looking at Sony's Spidey films and the F4 films as faltering renditions (tho Raimi's films are well regarded) - the MCU Ruffalo Hulk proved so popular, and then they hit it out of the park again w Spidey's arrival as a supporting figure in Civil War
    - the reason I'm giving this backstory is because this is what's at stake w all the talk now of Fantastic 4 - a studio merger finally brought Fantastic 4 back into MCU ownership - they're another set of beloved icons who ppl have been waiting to see done properly - and after years of careful preparation, now the MCU is finally starting to reveal their approach to Marvel's First Family - so ppl are very excited

@@tktopmoviesThey have great chemistry, I agree - and I suggest you try the 2003 version (Nick Nolte is one of the most unique comic book villains ever, both frightening and ridiculous and epic, almost like a real-life dysfunctional parent as seen by their child)
      - re Fantastic 4, I meant that many ppl think that nobody's made a proper Fantastic 4 film yet, even tho they're so iconic
      - B-movie maestro Roger Corman did a throwaway version in the 90s to keep the rights,
      then there was a so-so popular comedic version in the 00s, plus its sequel, which fit the style of the time;
then an ambitious version in 2015 that got chopped up by the producers and ended up a notorious critical and commercial flop
      - so I meant ppl are excited that the MCU will finally make their own version now - I was just talking about the buzz for this upcoming movie

After The Incredible Hulk TV series abruptly ended (and without an actual final episode ending) due to a foolish studio head executive outright cancelling all the superhero shows because he didn't want CBS to be known as the superhero station - CBS also carried and aired, Wonder Woman & (a live-action) Spider-Man series, they also aired two Captain America (pilot) TV films, a Dr. Strange (TV pilot film) which all 3 never picked up for a series, along with The Incredible Hulk...(which was the longest running TV series out of all of them)... thankfully, several Incredible Hulk TV movies were made in the late 80s & early 90s (with many of the TV stars reprising their roles) which wrapped up the previous open storylines from the series...and they even introduced several other Marvel heroes & villains as well (such The Mighty Thor, Daredevil, The Kingpin & a female spy who was precursor to Black Widow). Sadly all of those TV movies came to a sudden end (they intended to make even more TV movies), when actor Bill Bixby (who played Dr. Banner) passed away from prostate cancer. RIP 😢
