... I suppose I shouldn't mention the tranquilizers were for a chemical-mass-ratio to humans. No, not posting this to ruin anyone's day. Look at it this way. It's proof that they understood the potential dangers and just didn't care.
Honestly I had never caught that before! I love it. I have lost count of how many times I have seen this movie and/or reactions. Its cool when someone points out a detail you have missed!
The director of this film, Louis Letterier, was a huge fan of the Hulk TV series. And with this story having a feel that was more in tune with the show than the comic, that’s where it worked well. There are so many callbacks and references to the Hulk TV Series ranging from the use of “The Lonely Man” theme song, to the use of the green eyes to indicate when the Hulk-out would happen. But, perhaps the best one is the appearance of Lou Ferrigno; the original Incredible Hulk, appeared in a short cameo with Edward Norton as a security guard whom Banner bribes with a pizza to allow him into the laboratory. P.S. Because you wondered where does this film fit in the timeline of the MCU, watch Iron Man 2. There is a scene where Stark and Nick Fury are meeting, and in the background is the news report about the Hulk’s battle with the Army on the college campus.
@@RetrofanFilms Fun Fact: Mark Ruffalo was originally Louis Leterrier’s (the director’s) first choice for the role of Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.
@@reactswithjax When Dr. Sterns, a.k.a. Mr. Blue, was warning Emil Blonsky about the results being “an abomination”, the filmmakers were subtly telling us that Blonsky was going to turn into the Abomination.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Nah. Eternals was absolutely horrid IMO. So was Black Panther. I'd argue Iron Man 2 was probably panned unnecessarily hard (though not the best, it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be). Most overrated definitely is a tie between Black Panther and Endgame. Endgame had a lot of isolated awesome moments, but it pales in comparison to the brilliance of Infinity War.
@@Fyrecide nah. Eternals was great. Beautifully shot. It has got to be the prettiest film in the entire MCU and has probably the highest % of on-location shooting, directed by wonderful filmmaker Chloe Zhao, so not hard to figure out why. Well directed. Well cast. Well acted. Good pacing. Decent story. The popular consensus that it was horrid is... in a word... baffling. It has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any MCU film and yet it is, at WORST, somewhere around the middle of the pack. Thus... by far the most underrated. The Incredible Hulk is frequently cited as the worst film in the MCU or one that should just be forgotten... but it's actually a pretty decent origin story film... so it takes the #2 spot. I might give Iron Man 2 the title of 3rd most underrated... I kind of agree it's better than usually made out to be but it's also not nearly as much hated-on as Eternals or Hulk. Black Panther I thought was pretty bad. I don't think I'd call it "horrid." But it wasn't great. But then it has one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores, and was one of the highest grossing MCU films in the USA, and even for-fox-sake got nominated for frickin' Best Picture of the year by the Oscars... what a joke... so even though it's not the worst MCU film... it is easily hands-down the most overrated MCU film.
@@nooneofconsequence1251 Disagree. Eternals was boring, had hardly any real character development for the massive cast it needed to account for, and the plot is absolutely dogshit for a variety of reasons. Sure, it LOOKS great. But that's just a visual feast. I can get that from a VFX reel from a CGI company if that's all I wanted. I want a story to make sense, be consistent, have character engagement, and not totally fuck the MCU up in multiple ways. Eternals did none of that if you understand even the basics of writing. Incredible Hulk was bad, but it also is largely inconsequential to the MCU as a whole and only serve to setup that the Hulk is a thing that now exists (as does Abomination) and that he's in hiding/retreat. No catastrophic effect there. Besides, it performed terribly at a time when MCU wasn't what it is today. Iron Man did well but for all anyone knew at the time it was it's own isolated thing. The general population wasn't as sold on comic book movies yet, and Hulk didn't have the benefit of having RDJ in it as a fun, charismatic protagonist. A Hulk movie post Avengers would have done exceptionally well.
The line that he says "Don't make me hungry, you wouldn't like me when I'm hungry" is their way of referencing the old TV show of the Incredible Hulk from the 1970's and 80's. One line from that show that everyone knew was "Don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry." I used to watch the Incredible Hulk tv show all the time when I was little.
Two things in the end you had questions about. The hand clap is called the thunderclap in the comics. Hulk and some other super strong characters clap their hands so hard and fast that it makes a pressure wave like an explosion. And Betty stopped Hulk from killing Abomination because she didn't want Bruce to become a murderer.
@@MarijnvdSterre YEAH, BETTY JUST WANTED TO HELP WITH THE DENIAL. THAT HER RAVAGING ANIMAL OF A BOYFRIEND IS ALREADY ACTUALLY A BRUTAL KILLER 😂😂😅😅 YEAH SHE REALLY SHOULD HAVE WATCHED THE ORIGINAL NICK NOLTE ERIC BANA HULK BEFORE WATCHING THIS ONE THOUGH. 🙄
I'm just gonna go ahead and say it. Killing a monster that's rampaging around the city killing who knows how many innocent people doesn't make someone a murderer. They absolutely should have just flatlined this guy.
@@chriswhinery925 I'm not saying it is morally right or wrong to do so. I am guessing at a character's mentality, not a world view. Betty knows Bruce may feel it to be wrong to do so. She was doing this for him, not and not society.
I think a lot of people overlook the true significance of the bar scene with General Ross and Tony at the end. That scene is one of the most important, pivotal, and thrilling moments in comic book movie history because after this, comic book movies would never be the same again. Over the last 15 years, it's now become extremely second nature that multiple superheroes will be seen in a movie together. Hell, it's expected at this point. But this was the very first time EVER that we saw an already established superhero character from a completely different movie cross over into another hero's movie. Prior to this movie, you never saw the X-Men in a Tobey Spiderman movie. You never saw Superman and Batman in the same movie together. All these characters existed in the realm of their own individual cinematic universes. But here, we saw IRON MAN show up in a HULK movie. This showed us that the events in Iron Man happened in the same universe as The Incredible Hulk! It was unprecedented at the time! Yes, the filmmakers teased at the end of Iron Man that they were putting a team together. But now with this scene, these weren't just teasers anymore. It was now CEMENTED that we were gonna eventually see an established universe with a wide array of comic book heroes all coexisting in the same universe and working on a team together! The first time I saw this in theaters, I freaked out the second Tony walked onscreen because I realized we were in a whole new world of comic book movies and it was a hell of a time to be alive for a fan because at this point, ANYTHING was possible. And what a ride it's been since then.
That just mirrored what Stan Lee did at Marvel back in the 60s. Spider-Man & Daredevil (say) would run into each other in their respective comics. Stan also placed his superheroes in the real world, usually New York, whereas DC had Metropolis, Gotham City, and Star City, among others. DC* started imitating Marvel when they saw how successful their approach became. *It's just DC. Detective Comics. Anyone saying "DC Comics" is really saying "Detective Comics Comics." 😃
Plus I love the fact that General Ross says to Stark: You always wear such nice suits, referring to his suit and tie and his Iron Man suit...great writing!
@@CaseytifyDC calls THEMSELVES DC comics lmao. We’re not wrong. It’s what the company is called. Also Stan Lee did not invent comics crossovers. The Justice league crossed over all the big DC heroes. And that was before the avengers
Don't worry Jax. The dogs are not dead. Those special operations guys were using tranquilizer darts to subdue Banner (and in this scenario dogs as well) not live ammo. In the factory when Banner turn into Hulk, u saw those guys shooting tranq darts but they did nothing. When Hulk angrily approaches them one of them said "go live, go live" that means switch to live ammo.
As to your question about whether Banner was experiencing anger when he was affected by Gamma radiation the first time, there was sort of an explanation in the first movie version of the Hulk that was directed by Ang Lee in 2003. In that movie Banner was a victim of repressed childhood trauma brought on by his father's abuse which later on played a role in his anger triggering his hulking-out transformations.
@@eq1373 after further research in Wikipedia it turns out that in the 1980s, Marvel wrote the childhood trauma storyline in the comics; so at least in the comics that background story is canon.
It's so nice to see someone reasearch about stuff they don't understand while others just skip ahead. It's very exciting to see someone being invested in the story. Very much looking forward to see your journey through the MCU...😍♥️
Yes!!! It shows how much she actually likes and cares about what she's watching. I think that will make her one of the best MCU reaction sagas of youtube. I'm so excited about that, looking forward to ALL of the next movies.
In the comics, Bruce is terrified of being angry even before becoming the Hulk. His father was an abusive drunk and ended up killing his mother, and died himself later on. He repressed his rage for years in the fear of becoming like his father until the Hulk came into existence. In the MCU that happened with a serum that used gamma radiation as a catalyst but in the comics it was a gamma explosion he was caught in while trying to save someone in the testing area. The Hulk is the physical form of Bruce's trauma and repressed anger given form. In the comics, the Hulk had multiple forms and colors, all representing different parts of his mind, but the movies don't really go into that so it's not important
Was so glad they fit in a cameo of Bill Bixby, as well as Lou Ferrigno and Stan Lee. Bixby and Ferrigno played the first tragic hero I had ever seen in the Incredible Hulk TV series. Their portrayals taught me so much about compassion, helped by that oh so sad ending credits theme. Also glad the reporter Mr. Magee from the TV show and the famous line from the intro credits, "Mr. Magee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" get callbacks in this movie
Always liked the way Lou's hulk looked. Sure he was smaller than the comics, but at least it looked real and not like this CGI crap. I mean Lou was still like 4 times bigger than Bill
Love your reactions to the MCU, especially when they are first time reactions, Jax. And to fully appreciate how the MCU actually unified every Marvel character, it's also best to watch all of the Spider-Man movies, in order of their release, as well.
The MCU writing is crazy in this film, bc this came out before Captain America the 1st Avenger, but there is a line in that film that perfectly explains why Blonsky has the reaction he does, Dr. Erskine to Steve Rogers “But more important, the man. The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion." It’s why Schmitt transformed into the red skull and why Blonsky becomes the Abomination and to some degree (spoilery-ish) John Walker goes down the road he does in “Falcon & The Winter Soldier”
Doc Samson, the psychiatrist, is actually an ally and friend of Banner's. He tries to treat him for years. In the comics, Samson actually gets irradiated with gamma radiation and becomes super-strong with long green hair.
Tidbit: Banner's girlfriend was played by Jennifer Connelly in the first Hulk movie. She was re-cast as an AI voice for a super-hero's armor later.... Plus, in real life, she's married to Jarvis/Vision. Real-life couple, both as Stark Tech AIs. Neat.
"I fell like this intro's trying to do a lot in a short period of time." The intro is loosely based on _The Incredible Hulk_ TV series from the '70s-''80s. Especially the shots where Bruce is in the machine, which recreates the same shots from the TV opener. "So he just has to stay calm all the time." Anger _IS_ the most famous trigger, but it's not consistant. In the comics, it was originally a day/night transformation (which Marvel sometimes goes back to). "I need to figure out when this is on the timeline." _The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2,_ and _Thor_ all take place in the same week. "Is this that stuff they used on Tony Stark? The paralysis thing? No... it can't be." Actually, yes, it is. The fact that it's not working on the Hulk says more about the Hulk than about the equipment. "How do you report on your insurance claim that a Hulk destroyed your apartment?" You call _Damage Control._ (I have absolutely no idea where Damage Control gets their budget to fix stuff, btw... but it clearly has more money than most nations.) "Can a Hulk even die?" Yes. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Now ask if they _STAY_ dead. "What? This boy's got some magic within him! He can just... OMG, how did he do that?" The Hulk Clap is a reference to the '80s cartoon series. There were lots of rules back then to sanitize cartoons, and many of them had to do with violence against other characters. The animators created the Hulk Clap as a way for Hulk to knock over other people (via shock waves) without actually punching them. The move has found its way into later cartoons and comics, as well as into the MCU. "You want to keep him alive for some reason?" Comics _USUALLY_ don't kill their villains.
Fun reactions! I'm always impressed when I find someone who can still bring something fresh to a film I know so well. Some behind the scenes notes: Edward Norton fought with producers over the final cut of the film, and when he didn't get his way he refused to do press for it beyond a single contractual appearance... that was pretty much the reason for him being replaced for future films. Because Universal had made the original (largely unrelated) Ang Lee Hulk movie, they had the right of first refusal to distribute any other Hulk films. Originally, this was fine with Marvel when they were independent, as they produced the MCU movies and then had them distributed by larger studios. But then Disney bought up Marvel, and Disney doesn't want to make a film for Universal to distribute and profit off of. So there hasn't been a direct sequel as a result. However, Hulk can guest star in other films without having to involve Universal, and so that's how they've used him since.
This movie was heavily influenced by Norton who was a Hulk fan and wanted the movie with a accurate portrayal of the hulk in line with the comics a little dark and gritty , Ruffolow is who Marvel/ Disney wanted to be Bruce Banner as a more family friendly viewing ( massively nerfed powered ) hulk
@@aaditkhan728 it’s because of Disney, the fans don’t even like Marvel’s portrayal of the Hulk. Should’ve been given to another team, like with Logan or Deadpool. They could do a darker take on the Hulk that would be much more accurate to the comics.
@@colinbrannon2051 I mean yeah, obviously,it's just that they don't want to. It's not MCU anymore,it's M she U. And I honestly don't get it when people actually say that she hulk's fourth wall break is better than Deadpool's,I'm like wtf man?!
Thanks for the really entertaining reactions. Your (or your editor's) reference and meme game is on point lol. This movie is somewhat enjoyable the first time you watch it, and I know what they were trying to do, but I think this movie had a lot more potential than what they delivered. The shortcomings were in the script and the directing, not the actors of course. Would you consider reacting to She-Hulk? (if you haven't seen it yet), would love to see that! Thank you again!
What a fun reaction! I just found your channel the other day and so far I've really enjoyed all of your reactions that I've seen. I can't wait to see your other Marvel reactions as you get further into the MCU!
fact: the scene where hulk was roaring at the thunder, is a for-shadowing for his future rivalry/bestie relationship with Thor = The two strongest members of the original 6 members of the Avengers (ironman, cap, hulk, thor, black widow and hawkeye)
The Lucky Security Officer that got the Pizza was Lou Ferrigno... He WAS the Hulk in the 70's TV Show! SHIELD Monitored ALL Possible Threats to the Public. They Found the Best way to Neutralize the Hulk was to keep people from Ticking off Banner and give him Space... LOT'S of Space!
I'm brazilian and it's kinda funny to me hear that fake portuguese in the begining of the movie lol, the actor who slaps Bruce Banner is actually brazilian, but the guy trying to flirt in the factory is not and is so evident when he talks, i love it.
Really enjoying your MCU reactions so far, Jax. And your partnership with Lamby is great! (Or is it 'Llammy'? Sorry, I can't tell whether she's a sheep or a llama 😊) The movies don't touch on Bruce's background very much, but in the comics his character suffered from a terribly abusive childhood, which left him with trauma and unresolved rage. We don't know whether the MCU version of Bruce Banner has a similar backstory, but if so then the experimental serum very possibly enhanced that anger, and turned it into something monstrous. Yet another example of why most people should never become super soldiers. If you're looking for a detailed picture of the timeline for the Phase 1 films, try looking up "Fury's Big Week" online. Although you might want to wait until you've finished watching "The Avengers", just so that nothing gets spoiled. Looking forward to the next!
Thank you for the backstory on Bruce's character. That is incredibly sad, but I also think it makes him more relatable. Definitely a good example of the dangers of the super soldier program 😯 And my stuffed animal is a lamb! I'm so glad you like Lamby! He makes watching movies a little more fun! I will look up Fury's Big Week online...but definitely after I see The Avengers. I'm trying to avoid spoilers.
You are already one of my favourite reactors after just a couple mcu movies! You have a quick mind! And I love your laugh and your facial expressions! And Lemmy 🥰
Yes, you are somewhat lucky to be able to binge them. Sometimes the wait was maddening but the excitement building up to release day was as cool as the movies!
I thought Mark Ruffalo made a more believable Banner (more mellow, more cautious) but I wish they had just left this version of The Hulk. This version is the one that the madder he gets, the stronger he becomes. Mr. Blue is Dr. Samuel Sterns who eventually becomes The Leader (one of Hulk's greatest enemies) who is the brains to Hulk's brawn. Note the gamma blood dripping into his temple and the smile that follows.
Fun Fact: Mark Ruffalo was actually the director Louis Leterrier’s first choice for the role of Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, but Marvel insisted on Edward Norton because he was more famous at the time.
This takes place in 2010, 2 years after Ironman. It actually takes place in the same week as the rest of the films of Phase 1 (Same week that Steve Rogers woke up and saw himself in the 21st century)
If you dont know about Mr. BLUE he's another villian called the leader. He to was enffected by gamma in the brain. This causes him to be highly intelligent. Side effects ,his head is big, and he's green to. In the cartoon he would create monsters with gamma blood. Just like the blood samples he had in the lab.
Fun facts: the majority of this was shot in Ontario Canada. Between Toronto and Hamilton. -The great big Guard was played by Lou Ferrigno, the TV HULK. -They went out of their way to put a green object into every scene... Even the General's drink, at the end. The transformation is based on the repressions of the subject. With Banner it's rage; giving us *the HULK.* With Blonsky, it's psychosis; giving us *the ABOMINATION.* With Sterns, it's intelligence; giving us *the LEADER.*
Thank you. There was another "Hulk" (2003) movie before this. "The Incredible Hulk" was going to be a sequel to that movie, but then "Iron Man" happened and the MCU became something and this became a reboot instead of a sequel. The previous movie is very good, very different, and having Eric Bana play Bruce Banner just appeals to me.
Lou Ferrigno who played the Hulk on tv voiced this Hulk. Also in the first Avengers movie Ruffalo/Banner references this fight when he says "Last time I was in New York ,I broke Harlem".
Early? This movie is 2008. Stan Lee is in every Marvel movie and apparently his first appearance was in the TV-movie The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989). I only saw him for the first time is Tobey Maguire Spiderman (2002)😂.
One of the reasons this was Edward Nortons only appearance as Banner is because he locked horns with Kevin Feige all the time plus he wanted the movie to be more about Banner and less about the Hulk (cause that worked so well with Ang Lee's version of the Hulk *sarcasm*). Plus he tried to rewrite the script everyday which ruined his relationship with the cast and crew.
Lou Ferrigno voiced the Hulk in the MCU. I'd like to see Edward Norton return as the Multiverse Banner. Rename him David Banner, a callback to Bill Bixby's character in the CBS Incredible Hulk live action series.
The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man II, and Thor all take place during the same week. Banner became the Hulk about five years before Iron Man appeared (when Hulk, And Lee's movie, came out).
About Hulks rage: The Hulk went through so many retcons and rewrites that the waters got somewhat muddied. Most of the time Banner and Hulk just get treated as a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde metaphor, and the gamma radiation accident that put those 2 personas into him. But it is/was canon that Hulk (partly) is Banners childhood trauma that got manifested thanks to the accident. His father was an abusive monster (who believed that its genetics, because his father was abusive, too) and he physically abused his wife and Bruce for years. When she eventually tried to escape, he killed her infront of Bruce's eyes. And then her manipulated Bruce into testifying that he is not guilty. This is the rage and guilt that Bruce carries around with him. The MCU never picked it up, because its pretty hard to include a topic like this into a kid frienldy and short action movie. But the MCU doesn't understand the character and never knows what to do with the Hulk anyway, so I don't think that it matters at all. But it would've been a great point for Banner and Stark to bond, because Banners father was an alcoholic and Stark is an alcoholic, both with father issues. (for more: "Ironman - Demon in a bottle" is one of those very good Ironman story arcs, which deals with Tony, who is the leader of the Avengers at that time, succumbing to his addiction)
Ahh, this makes a lot of sense. In terms of his backstory, I like the idea that his past is coming out through his Hulk persona. It gives the super soldier serum's ability to amplify the good/bad parts of the personality a bit more continuity. But, I can see how that may be hard for Disney to tackle.
This is my favorite version on the hulk when it comes to the movies. Wish they never changed it. I grew up watching the Lou Ferrigno version so i still have a soft spot for that version.
The "thunderclap" that the Hulk does to put out the fire was one of the things I used to love to see him do in the old 60s cartoons. It was WAY powerful where if he did it hard enough it would blow people, jeeps, and even make tanks flip. It's not just a wind thing, it's also a shockwave thing. He doesn't do it a lot, but I always thought it was very cool. In DC, the supers can do it too (Superman, Supergirl, etc.). It's a great form of crowd control when there are multiple adversaries.
This movie was loosely based on the first really bad Hulk movie and the Bill Bixby extremely good Hulk TV series. Edward Norton was just a pain in the neck and refused to even promote this Movie so he had to go. Mark played him a tad differently but he is so likable in this Jekyll Hyde part that you will grow to love him. Keep these going they are wonderful
Appreciate your take. The Hulk is a difficult character to solo in a movie because he's a character that doesn't want to change. He wants to be left alone. Also, he's a force of mindless brute strength so it's not like you can throw in the clever twist that the hero planned, or anything like that. I thought they did a great job with this film, but I understand why it's one of the least appreciated MCU movies. And you asked where this happens in the time-line. Film order, it was second. But story order, it's supposed to occur next to or shortly after Iron Man 2. There is also a short with Coulson and Jasper Sitwell discussing various things, and one of them is how they should call in "the consultant", which is Tony Stark, which explains why it's Tony that speaks to Ross at the end of this movie and not Fury. Keep having fun. Always remember that every single one of us that is following you on this journey appreciates your take on each movie, but we're all waiting for you to reach Endgame... ...and then Spider-man: No Way Home.
Banner volunteered on an experiment that was meant to make him resistant to radiation, only to realize that he participated on a “Super Soldier Program” that Steve Rogers had (except with Gamma rather than Vita Rays).
Betty doesn't want Bruce to become a purposeful killer, which is why she told him to stop before he killed Blonsky, not because she cares about Blonsky in particular. Anybody that dies because of the Hulk, before this, was some form of accident and collateral damage because the Hulk is not precise. You've seen the property damage that happens when he gets involved. This is why the general public does view him as a monster. How'd you feel that if every so often this big green thing popped up and just went on a rampage every time he appears? Most people would be like, "Someone needs to catch or kill that thing!" But, as SHIELD figured out, Banner is fine if you don't mess with him.
all the actors did a good job with the characters especially liv tyler as elizabeth "betty" ross this is a perfect example of why bruce banner joined the avergers
Canonically, nothing short of an artillery shell can even scratch the Hulk's skin. Makes me wonder about the tactical prowess of those who send their soldiers in to fling darts and bullets at my man Bruce.
There are two other characters set up in this movie that Marvel haven't yet done anything with: Leonard Samson (played by Ty Burrel here) becomes a superhero in his own right: Doc Samson. He's got a lesser version of Hulk's enhanced strength, invulnerability, etc., and long green hair, but doesn't transform back and forth. He sort of serves as a psychiatrist to the superhero community. Doctor Samuel Sterns (Mr Blue, played by Tim Blake Nelson) is better known in the comics as the villain The Leader. His brain mutated by the same radiation that created the Hulk, he is as smart as the Hulk is strong, and he's obsessed with using Gamma radiation to change the world.
With regard to when this movie takes place, it happens during what is known as Fury’s Big Week. After Banner gets to America the events of this movie take place during the events of Iron Man 2 and Thor all within the same week.
The thing that made Tony’s appearance do unprecedented was the fact Iron Man was licensed to Paramount while Hulk was licensed to Universal. Until this, actors were pretty much set to their studio where superheroes were concerned. Marvel changed that for the MCU. Then Marvel got enough money to buy all the rights back (except Spider-Man, which was a different matter), and then they sold to Disney, for two awesome phases (2 and 3) and two horrendous phases (4 and 5) which are costing Disney a small fortune.
Yes there were midnight showings. Good thing is you are right. You don’t have to wait to see them. But when new movies come out after you catch up, you’ll get to enjoy them when released. Thank you for being such a great person and such a delight to watch. Take care and have a blessed weekend.
23:08 "Wait, they're _part_ of SHIELD? I thought SHIELD was supposed to be good." No, they're not part of SHIELD, but apparently they do have access to some of SHIELD.'s computer capabilities -- probably because they're military.
The Abomination Hulk fight happened the same week Captain America was found, Thor's hammer was located, and the Stane Ironman fight happened. It's been called, fury's big week
Speaking of Captain America, the beginning of the movie, Banner volunteered on an experiment that was meant to make him resistant to radiation, only to realize that he participated on a “Super Soldier Program” that Steve Rogers had (except with Gamma rather than Vita Rays).
I absolutely loved your reaction to this Hulk movie! Yours is without a doubt the best reaction to it that I have ever seen!! You made it so fun again!! I'm really looking forward to seeing you react to more MCU flix! Til next time...HULK SMASH!!!
Shield don't want the government to know they were monitoring the hulk for future plans do thay sent Stark to annoy ross. The hulk and banner are not same person each one has their own personality but share some thoughts and memory. Always in a constant fight for control over the body.
Hulks gamma clap took all the oxygen out of the area, starving the flames, and killing a Hulk is almost impossible, Banner tries to kill himself with a bullet in the mouth, Hulk spits it back out.
It's really fun to watch you watch these! You really do know how to just suspend all disbelief and go along for the ride because let's face it, it's a fun ride! I think other people have mentioned that Edward Norton became difficult to work with. I don't know too much about the details but I remember reading a while back that he had his own notions about the direction of the character that didn't fit within the overarching story they were trying to set up in the fledgling days of the MCU. Who knows? Having a character change actors is really difficult at first but I will say that I really do enjoy Mark Ruffalo's take on both Banner and the Hulk. Hopefully you'll arrive there as well!
I'm so glad you're enjoying the reactions! These movies have been so fun to watch. I wonder what kind of vision Edward Norton had for this character. He seemed to understand the Hulk really well. That being said, Disney probably wanted to make changes when they took over...I'm looking forward to seeing what Mark Ruffalo does with this character. I like both actors, so this should be interesting!
"Is Blue SHIELD?" Ha! You don't realize but you said the name of an insurance company; Blue Cross/Blue Shield! 😂 They should pay you for product placement!
Seeing this again brings back great memories..... Incredible Hulk is such a great classic superhero movie. Love it even more after seeing it again now. :)
Near the end on the helicopter they keep it as if it was real life. So when he kissed her and fell back off the helicopter no one knew if he was going to change back, after he had just took the serum to keep him from turning back into the "Hulk. That was a very romantic and wonderful moment.
Thunderbolt was indeed not only playing with fire he was playing with a nuclear bomb thinking he can replicate the accident that changed Bruce into the Hulk. And he wanted an army of hulks at his command the soldiers wouldn't have been a restrained as Bruce because they've spent half their lives in battle once they got sent back to civilian life just a simple spill of milk by a kid or a teenage kid rebelling against their veteran parent would've caused these soldiers to Hulk out & cause damage or worse death to friends or loved ones. Seeing what happened with Blonsky is a perfect example of this this man was already a bit unstable or another example of the super soldier serum being given to another unstable soldier Jon Walker. All of these experiments comes back to Steve Rogers who is indeed the perfect super soldier because he never allowed the serum to dictate who he is despite his own faults Steve earned the title Captain America.
Shield is actually how they located the blood trace in the beginning of the movie. A very small thing, but this was the early steps of creating a universe.
29:55 - It's called the Hulk Thunderclap. He literally claps his hands so hard it creates a concussive shockwave and sonic boom. To give you some background information on the Hulk movie franchise, Marvel released a previous movie called Hulk (2003), starring Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly, which was an origin story. It was pretty good IMO but many criticized it as more of a drama than a comicbook superhero action movie. So Hulk (2008) was created as an indirect sequel (The flashbacks were pseudo-retelling the 2003 Hulk events), similar to how Aliens (1986) was an indirect sequel to Alien (1979) in terms of look and feel.
Great reaction...no, wait; that was an INCREDIBLE reaction. Trivia: The actor playing the pizza-eating intern/student in the library is also a teacher in the Marvel/Sony Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. He Is supposed to be the same character within the MCU continuity.
Thank you!! I'm so glad you liked it. ✨Also, thanks for pointing that guy out. I've never seen the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. When I do, I'll keep a lookout for him!
Did you see Ed as the hero in "Primal Fear"? Ha, no reference really. The Incredible Hulk" series was alright in the 70s considering F/X were rough. It's still a surprise to see Ferrigno in this. Stan Lee has always been amazing. He has biographies you might want to see after you're done with this big combo
I did like Edward Norton in this movie, I think he fit it pretty well (especially how it gives a lot of heavy nods to the old TV show with Bill Bixby). That said, I actually prefer Mark Ruffalo's performance more in the future movies. I have a hard time imagining Norton playing off the other characters (especially RDJ) as well as Mark does. Also... 22:11 I always laugh at the "sad beep" of the heart rate monitor in that scene, lol. Womp womp.
If it makes you feel better, they were tranquillizing the dogs. Their guns were loaded to subdue Banner, not kill him.
That much sedative would kill a dog more than likely.
@@blankbitofpaper Could very well be but this is the MCU; realism isn’t always top of the list. And they made a point to show the darts in the dogs.
And when they finally meet the Hulk he also gives the order to go to live ammo.

@@user-EricWatson55 Except that the “leave me alone” was barely audible, while “Hulk smash!” was loud and clear.
It was clear as day.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for that scene in Iron Man 2! Thanks for letting me know about it!

this is one of the most underrated mcu movie to be honest
completely agree. #1 most underrated has to be Eternals... but this is probably #2 most underrated.
Most overrated is, of course, Black Panther.
Thats the worst MCU movie
Get this man a snicker.
The thunderclap! That's such a cool technique! Also, I'm glad Bruce didn't become a murderer.

Jack McGee, the reporter, was the one who hounded Banner in the television series.
And Jim Wilson if I’m correct, is Sam Wilson’s cousin.
Oh, that makes sense. That's quite a backstory to give his character.
@@reactswithjax yes and I don't think I've seen or read it in any other source material.

@@eq1373 after further research in Wikipedia it turns out that in the 1980s, Marvel wrote the childhood trauma storyline in the comics; so at least in the comics that background story is canon.

Who would want to skip this movie? I know it is not on Disney Plus, but the MCU Spider-Man movies are not on Disney Plus either because of Sony.
Sje has a question about every scene. Jk

Erskine to Steve Rogers
“But more important, the man. The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion."
It’s why Schmitt transformed into the red skull and why Blonsky becomes the Abomination and to some degree (spoilery-ish) John Walker goes down the road he does in “Falcon & The Winter Soldier”
There's an irony in the Hulk comic books.
General Ross eventually becomes Red Hulk.
That’s now a spoiler
Doc Samson, the psychiatrist, is actually an ally and friend of Banner's. He tries to treat him for years.
In the comics, Samson actually gets irradiated with gamma radiation and becomes super-strong with long green hair.
If Thor met him, he would say: "Know this, Son of Sam."
Tidbit: Banner's girlfriend was played by Jennifer Connelly in the first Hulk movie.
She was re-cast as an AI voice for a super-hero's armor later....

"I fell like this intro's trying to do a lot in a short period of time."
The intro is loosely based on _The Incredible Hulk_ TV series from the '70s-''80s. Especially the shots where Bruce is in the machine, which recreates the same shots from the TV opener.
"So he just has to stay calm all the time."
Anger _IS_ the most famous trigger, but it's not consistant. In the comics, it was originally a day/night transformation (which Marvel sometimes goes back to).
"I need to figure out when this is on the timeline."
_The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2,_ and _Thor_ all take place in the same week.
"Is this that stuff they used on Tony Stark? The paralysis thing? No... it can't be."
Actually, yes, it is. The fact that it's not working on the Hulk says more about the Hulk than about the equipment.
"How do you report on your insurance claim that a Hulk destroyed your apartment?"
You call _Damage Control._ (I have absolutely no idea where Damage Control gets their budget to fix stuff, btw... but it clearly has more money than most nations.)
"Can a Hulk even die?"
Yes. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Now ask if they _STAY_ dead.
"What? This boy's got some magic within him! He can just... OMG, how did he do that?"
The Hulk Clap is a reference to the '80s cartoon series. There were lots of rules back then to sanitize cartoons, and many of them had to do with violence against other characters. The animators created the Hulk Clap as a way for Hulk to knock over other people (via shock waves) without actually punching them. The move has found its way into later cartoons and comics, as well as into the MCU.
"You want to keep him alive for some reason?"
Comics _USUALLY_ don't kill their villains.
I love how you add little things. Like you make a prediction and then you add the right answer. You do a great job of making that interesting.

Yeah, it's very sad that Hulk never got a sequel. ☹

Really enjoying your MCU reactions so far, Jax. And your partnership with Lamby is great! (Or is it 'Llammy'? Sorry, I can't tell whether she's a sheep or a llama 😊)
The movies don't touch on Bruce's background very much, but in the comics his character suffered from a terribly abusive childhood, which left him with trauma and unresolved rage. We don't know whether the MCU version of Bruce Banner has a similar backstory, but if so then the experimental serum very possibly enhanced that anger, and turned it into something monstrous. Yet another example of why most people should never become super soldiers.

I thought Mark Ruffalo made a more believable Banner (more mellow, more cautious) but I wish they had just left this version of The Hulk. This version is the one that the madder he gets, the stronger he becomes. -The great big Guard was played by Lou Ferrigno, the TV HULK.
-They went out of their way to put a green object into every scene... Even the General's drink, at the end.
The transformation is based on the repressions of the subject.
With Banner it's rage; giving us *the HULK.*
With Blonsky, it's psychosis; giving us *the ABOMINATION.*
With Sterns, it's intelligence; giving us *the LEADER.*
Ferrigno also did a cameo in the 2003 Eric Bana Hulk. I think he was a security guard then too.
I also noticed the University Battle shown off in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers.
The head shrink boyfriend is Doc Samson. In the comics he actually does try to help Bruce.
Imagine Thor meeting him and said: “Know this, Son of Sam.”
7:51 Damn that smile will make anyone's day 🥰🥰.. Awesome Jax ☺️ the moment the hulk out begins, she smiles
Lou Ferrigno voiced the Hulk in the MCU. I'd like to see Edward Norton return as the Multiverse Banner. Rename him David Banner, a callback to Bill Bixby's character in the CBS Incredible Hulk live action series.
That's why they must have replaced him he refused to wear purple pants 😂
The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man II, and Thor all take place during the same week. Banner became the Hulk about five years before Iron Man appeared (when Hulk, And Lee's movie, came out).
About Hulks rage:
The Hulk went through so many retcons and rewrites that the waters got somewhat muddied.
Hulks my favourite superhero ever and this movie is just amazing
Nice reaction. Glad you enjoyed it. This one is an underrated film.
The cab scene was my favorite part in the movie
Liv Tyler yelling seems to be a teaser for Red She Hulk.
Facts... No one does the ThunderClap better than the Hulk
Fun Fact: Mark Ruffalo was originally Louis Leterrier (the director’s) first choice for The Incredible Hulk.
After Emil got the serum he was basically Captain America. He was a little preview of Steve Rogers.
Canonically, nothing short of an artillery shell can even scratch the Hulk's skin. Makes me wonder about the tactical prowess of those who send their soldiers in to fling darts and bullets at my man Bruce.
There are two other characters set up in this movie that Marvel haven't yet done anything with:
Leonard Samson (played by Ty Burrel here) becomes a superhero in his own right: Doc Samson.
Sterns is coming back in Captain America: New World Order.
27:43 It flipped a taxi over like it was a skateboard.
With regard to when this movie takes place, it happens during what is known as Fury’s Big Week. After Banner gets to America the events of this movie take place during the events of Iron Man 2 and Thor all within the same week.
What an intense week for the people of Earth in the MCU!
@@reactswithjax if you keep an eye out, you’ll see some indicators that things are happening concurrently.
One thing everyone seems to miss with the dogs is that they do not kill them, they have tranquilizers in their guns, they are just tranqing them.
Bruce, have a Snickers. You're not yourself when you're hungry.
Also William Hurt recently passed away. So Harrison Ford has been cast as Thunderbolt Ross going forward...
The Abomination Hulk fight happened the same week Captain America was found, Thor's hammer was located, and the Stane Ironman fight happened. It's been called, fury's big week
The super soldier serum was introduced in this movie, the serum that Steve Rodgers used to become Cap
Hulk is my favorite character thank you so much for reacting i loved itttt
@1:38 Ah, Earl Grey, a Jean-Luc Picard favorite. However, Sir Patrick Stewart’s favorite is Yorkshire Gold.
Shield don't want the government to know they were monitoring the hulk for future plans do thay sent Stark to annoy ross. The hulk and banner are not same person each one has their own personality but share some thoughts and memory. Always in a constant fight for control over the body.
28:37 I like watching people favorite hero get completely fkd up by a villain 😂😂
Hulks gamma clap took all the oxygen out of the area, starving the flames, and killing a Hulk is almost impossible, Banner tries to kill himself with a bullet in the mouth, Hulk spits it back out.
You've already seen Captain America.. When Yablonski was trying as a soldier to beat Hulk, he was full of their best Cap knock-off serum.
You're talking about SHIELD. Honestly I had never even heard of SHIELD until 5 years after this came out and the TV series started.
Oooh! Thanks for pointing that out!!
One of the most iconic and best movies ever for me
Jax Smashes Reviews....readers smash the like button (to be fair that didn't sound better in my head but still typed it)
The security guard that he gave pizza to is played by Lou Ferrigno who played the Hulk in the old TV show from the 80's
Womp womp.
Edward Norton works for this movie, but for the tone of the MCU under the Disney banner, Ruffalo fit much better.
In the television series McGee was the reporter that hounded Bruce Banner.
In this movie’s defense, the dog that was shot early on was just tranquilized, not killed lol
Thank you for clarifying that! I was too caught up in the movie to notice at the time!
