Thank you so much Mark Haynes for creating something such inspiring for so many people, everyone will agree to say a huge thanks to you... I don't really know what to say but, thank you so much, it really had a impact on a lot of people! We all can say thank you, and to have fun while creating what you want now, and most importantly take you're time and have fun! By everyone who love you're work~
Shoutouts to all the fellow kids-now-turned-adults who grew up watching this, one of them being me. Welcome back Mark you absolute legend! We never gave up on you, and we'll be supporting you throughout the reboot and for whatever may come next! The hype is REAL!
I appreciate you for basically writing this out (as I am one of those kids-now-adults). This actually so hype and I dont get too hype nowdays lol :(( 🙃
Yeah, this series sure brought as the great series we know now. But SMBZ's return will be a great treasure to remember. A great legacy to be remembered in this decade.
Terrified and incredibly pissed. It had never even occurred to me that anything bad could happen to Tails before I watched this series. Miles Prower is a flying genius badass, and I didn't get to see him in this awesome series because that _bastard_ murdered him.
I gotta say man, we can talk all we want about the fight scenes but I think the writing, direction and just downright the resourcefulness of how Mark uses the sprites to tell the story is criminally underrated. He perfectly captures every characters personality and how they interact with each other and the audience. We couldn't have a better creator for such a series....
Absolutely, this is honestly the thing that has me so invested in the series. I love the fights for sure but nothing kills a fan made production for me faster than someone being out of character. But as you say, he nails them all, with great direction and creative animation to boot. I appreciate that I can get emotionally invested in this because it feels like it's really happening to the characters themselves.
@@Xackadee Well, Shadow was out of character. But luckily he realized this and decided to salvage it with the Rouge flashback. And apparently he'll make Shadow less edgy from the jump in the reboot.
@@SarahJerand You're saying that like it wasn't the plan the whole time. Given how much of this series he had planned out, it's likely he knew from the start why he was making Shadow that way. Plus, when it comes to Shadow, his personality is hard to pin down, depending on the adaptation.
Mark was ahead of his time when he made SMBZ. With the remake, he shows us that he still is. I won’t lie, the man is a genius and a wellspring of talent.
@@biggestboi9732 The original version’s files were corrupted, so Mark couldn’t continue it. Now he’s making the true vision of SMBZ he had with the reboot, which is still ongoing, but sprite animations are far from easy to make so they take time. Episode 3 *will* be released, we just need to be patient and wait.
It wasn’t even just the animation that made this ahead of its time. By 06, I don’t think there was another sprite animation that was a crossover of Sega and Nintendo that was as good as this series. The choreography of the fights, the story Mark planned and the villain being someone other then Metal Sonic and everything else about this series makes us great
Not really. This was a pretty common format... It's just that Flash being defunct makes Aftereffects harder to use. Look up Bunnykill, the original TOME, Homestar Runner, Animator vs Animation, Icon Wars...
Something that consistently impresses me about this series is how well Mark captures that Nintendo sense of humor in his characterization. It's the little details like having Kammy take a moment to scold her son for having a clean room that separates this series from other fan animations and could almost make you think this was a licensed series. I can't wait to see more of this in the reboot
Having finally watched the full series years later, and back to back, I have to say the Sonic side of the story is immensely underrated and underappreciated, because I feel when you focus on it you get to figure out the story Mark ORIGINALLY was trying to tell about crossovers and how unbalanced they are, specifically focusing on an scenario in which a Sonic character fought a Mario character. From a writers point of view this story is more than just an awesome fight fest full of fan-service, it tells a story of what happens when a threat that's way beyond an universe nature crosses it and single-handedly changes the status-quo by bringing it to its kneels. I don't think anyone has taken proper time to analyze the scenario these characters are in, and the pressure Sonic and Shadow are on throughout the entire series. Sonic and Shadow once in the Mushroom Kingdom are already carrying the weight of their whole universe as they failed it all thanks to Sonic's inexperience and Shadow's lack of preparation; Because of these factors Sonic's whole world was easily destroyed in matters of HOURS, not days, Sonic specifically states everything that lead to the destruction of their universe happened within hours. And within those hours Sonic's friends were haunted down one-after-another and mercilessly slaughtered before Sonic and even Shadow could face Mecha face-to-face. Mecha bodied everyone in Mobius just because he felt like it, taking pride in slaughtering Sonic friends as an evolution to his former purpose: being programmed to out-perform the strongest and naturally skilled creature ever born from Mobius, Sonic. This is the one sin Shadow can't forgive Sonic for. Had Sonic done his job and made sure not to mess around with Metal Sonic when he had the chance, properly destroying him, none of these events would've happened. Now that it was too-little-to-late Shadow had to think on the whim how to fix the mess Sonic had help create by sending the Emeralds to (assuming) the nearest dimension to that of their own. And as Sonic says, this would have worked as it would've sealed Mecha to be stuck in their dimension, ignoring he could store radiations of the emeralds in case he needed it, and making the issue WAY WORSE than it already was. This all worth nothing just because it sets the stage to how beefed up Mecha was already on his base form at Mobius, when he attacked in a whim for the sake of blood-thirst and nothing more. And it conveys Shadow's stance on the matter and how apathetic he is towards helping the Mushroom Kingdom beyond seeking the emeralds. It takes listening to his stance and ignoring his personal bias he has with Mecha to know he, arguably, is right throughout the entire series. It doesn't takes long to realize this after these events we're presented with the Mushroom Kingdom and already the series is thematically playing with the idea of what would happen when something so destructible crossed to somewhere so innocent as the Mario universe, as we see Mecha blast to ashes an innocent Goomba; Again, a Mario ENEMY against a Sonic ENEMY. Although you might think this analogy isn't meant to be taken too seriously, think exactly what happens in Episode 3 of the OG series. We have Mecha introducing himself to Yoshi to ask and then later on fight for the emerald Yoshi was holding onto, showcasing his power and how ridiculous it was, as opposed to Yoshi's cheer power nature and skill; A Mario CHARACTER put into a fight against a Sonic CHARACTER, with a result that ended as canonically-accurately as it could get, with Mecha almost killing Yoshi due to his raw nature, and how ABSURDLY rigged the entire fight is. This fight is what set Mecha as an actual threat for Mario, as through action he demands Sonic an answer as to what happened to him, and it is ONLY until then that Sonic FINALLY decides to give Mario full on context of what's going on. Once again, Sonic almost had gotten someone killed out of lack of proper preparations from the Mario Bros. part to the walking death machine that Mecha Sonic actually was. Something acknowledge by the series. Then you have the Chaos Emeralds. Not only in the Reboot do we see that under the possession of one of them Yoshi is able to put-on a fight although he lacks the same intellect as Mecha; In the OG series we see how saturday-morning villains such as The Koopa Bros. manage to one-shot Mario, Luigi AND Sonic and Shadow when they're able to tap into Chaos Energy through their special attack, which would seem dumb and a cop-out to end the episode on a cliffhanger, that until viewers get to see what Chaos Energy is able to do in Episode 6 as Red is able to blast HALF A MOUNTAIN with a laser powered in Chaos Energy; All of these instances being Mario CHARACTERS using Sonic POWER-UPS. In all of these instances we've only seen glimpses of what happens when a Mario character crosses a Sonic character, putting a huge contrast with their innocent or at least harmless enough nature as opposed to the, well, chaotic and unstoppable nature of a Sonic entity or item; But I think the moment that truly cements the idea in is when Mecha Sonic steps in during the Yoshi's Island fight as it is a night and day for how the fight had been going, and how it ended. If by this point you weren't taking him that seriously I assure you the way he ended that fight with a literal bang to Yoshi's Island, will. It is only by this point that the idea is cemented of how much of an apocalyptic threat Mecha Sonic is not just for the heroes but for the entire Mario universe, and that is kind of the point. What I love about this narrative is that Mark didn't bullshit his way into having the Mario characters actually being able to counter Mecha Sonic just because they too have an odd nature and unique skills of their own, and their own set of Power-Ups. Furthermore, it is an unbiased representation as to what would probably happen if Mario or Luigi or Yoshi fought a Sonic villain: They all end losing, at least on their own, because those dudes are on a whole other legue. ESPECIALLY MECHA SONIC. The reason why Sonic is in such a hurry of gathering the Chaos Emeralds meanwhile trying to help the Mario Bros. fix the issues brought by these is because he's constantly reminded his mistake led to his world's destruction, and HE KNOWS Mario's World is just as doomed. whereas Shadow already knows Mario's World was dead since the beginning because of the nature of the same; That's why he wanted Sonic to help him retrieve the Emeralds on their own, and keep a low profile, thought that's only being reinforced the more the series progresses as up until Episode 7 Shadow has already had it at progressing at a slow pace when Mecha Sonic is causing chaos and destruction at a fast rate; The Mario World had never faced anything like Mecha Sonic, they weren't even prepared for something this destructive. Mecha took down Mobius within hours, and Mario's World has only kept itself alive thus far because of how random the nature of this one is, with "Secret of the Pipe Maze" confirming this. The only reason Mecha hasn't been as fast as gathering the Emeralds as he was in Mobius is because Mario's World is literally built differently. And that nature of insanity has worked in favor of the Mario character thus far, at least indirectly. That said, even though The Mario Characters have done more than enough in helping retrieve the emeralds, Shadow is arguably right in that Mario, Luigi and Yoshi have been slowing down and getting in the way of fights, considering at most they slow down Mecha Sonic, as opposed to Sonic or Shadow that actually land hits on him. Shame that the OG series ended exactly in the point I feel The Mario Cast was starting to keep up with Sonic in terms of fighting. That said, based on what I've seen on the reboot I'm more than excited to see how far this idea is taken to considering how ingenious this story came to be. Mark didn't had to change ANYTHING about these characters and their origins to make them fit in a canon only to create a story where both could co-exist, it is their natural differences what solely served as a base to create an story about how unbalanced crossovers truly are and what it means when something so terrifying as Mecha Sonic faces against something as pure as Mario. It is that stake what, to me, makes the story stand-out all the more against other flash-based crossovers I saw growing up; Because at its core it tells the tale of how one mistake led to the destruction of one world, and it caught another on its fire. Now both sides are trying to rectify that mistake.
Interesting way to put it. I'm not sure if I would give that little credit to the Mario characters or something, but idk I'm not a genius at this sort of thing. Though honestly, with this narrative especially, yeah, you right, I can tell. Mecha is kinda a big fish in a comparatively small pond or something Idk, I'm probably not making much sense.
@@SadikiStGeorgeangemon44 If we're lucky. :[ I'm grateful for the Remake episodes...but I still wish Mario and the others can be saved from their fate at the end of Episode 8. :'[
There actually was a ninth part preview! I won't spoil it for you but Mark left a message with the preview announcing the original series's discontinuation
One thing I really liked about this series is that the individual Chaos Emeralds actually did something by themselves. In Dragonball, a single Dragon Ball was almost useless outside of being nearly indestructible. Even having six of the seven meant nothing if you couldn't get the final ball. By allowing individual macguffins to provide some sort of power boost, it made it more interesting to see them gathered.
When did this series come out? I never really knew about this series I grew up on Sonic: Amazon Unleashed and other random Sonic stuff on RUclips. Don’t think I ever saw any Mario.
@@samueldesta2151 SMBZ came out in 2006 and originally discontinued in 2009. A lot of people that watch this series most likely saw it on Newgrounds when they were 12 or younger, myself included. I picked up on this series when episode 4 was in the making.
The character and philosophy of Sonic and Shadow is absolutely NAILED in their Episode 8 debate. Shadow’s simultaneous lack of empathy and over-inflated ego allow him to reach the correct conclusion when looking at the big picture, but in a way that makes him a hypocrite due to how emotionally compromised he is. Many people like him because he’s “badass,” but people like him who pretend to be objective in the real world more often than not either have something wrong with them or have had their bright side beaten out of them by bad experiences. That’s why he’s receptive when Sonic calls back to his *emotional* experiences rather than logistics, because Shadow’s cold logic stems from having his foundation of positivity snuffed out by trauma. Naive idealists are born, but cynical pragmatists are *made.* Sonic, on the other hand, has his flaws in full consistent display as well. He’s the type of guy to think with his heart instead of his head, and the fact of the matter is this only worked because his friends(people like Tails, Shadow, Rouge, and Espio) picked up the slack in regards to his lacking judgment. His extreme sense of empathy, mercy, and charism are what draws people varied enough to cover up his shortcomings to him in the first place, so the argument that upholding morality even when it doesn’t make total sense is perfectly supported by his experiences. It speaks to his strength of character, strong sense of justice, and his downright stubborn attitude that he manages to maintain this outlook even after losing everyone he held dear. There’s something to be commended about him immediately picking himself up by his bootstraps even after everything he’s been through, but his lack of malleability shines when he has to take up any non-combatant role. Technically, all of this could’ve been avoided if he just ended Eggman the first time he was defeated instead of giving the villain free reign to make better and better enemies until Sonic finally met his match in Mecha Sonic. This is why SMBZ is still so beloved so many years later. It’s not just the amazing choreography, efficient use of limited sprites, and Dragon Ball Z sensibilities. It’s that Mark thoroughly understands what we love about all these characters and finds ways to seamlessly get them into situations where these traits shine. Not just in dialogue but in fights as well: we see Luigi discovering his own strength through playing co-op with others mid battle, Mario’s combination of dexterous platforming, extreme raw power, and high resourcefulness when it comes to terrain and items, Shadow’s op chaos abilities that make him shine above the rest as the only one truly designed for combat, Yoshi’s situational awareness in supporting literally everyone on the battlefield, and Sonic’s fast-paced hit-and-run fighting style which allows him to both dance around multiple enemies and finesse those who outdo him in raw power. TL;DR Nostalgia goggles came off, and this series is still great.
I personally like Shadow for his growth as a Character, that's also why I don't like many of the other Sonic Characters. Shadow has 4 games worth of Character Development while Sonic just changes personality on a whim in the games, and all the other characters either lack a consistent personality or had a finalized personality from the beginning. Shadow had his character develop over the course of SA2, Sonic Heroes, ShTH, and Sonic '06, until they scrapped all developed personality and pulled a Sonic with him and Knuckles.
@@zeroshadeslayer3000 Nintendo gives Sakurai a list of characters that can be characters, he then chooses which ones to make. This much is from the horse's mouth.
I would also like to go on record that waiting for the "I'LL CRUSH YOU!!!" line in both the text chat and voice chat? That's a moment I'll remember for the longest time. Godspeed, you wonderful bastards.
This series was made about 15 years ago and it's still the golden standard for sprite animation. Few on the internet have matched this level of quality.
For me one of the best part of this series is how true to character everyone is. This man used these characters better than the companies that own them.
I actually think shadow is bad in this series, he is too hot headed when the real shadow (SA2) is actually mentally mature after his character development. Also knuckles beats mecha sonic easily because canonicaly he beat mecha sonic with the master emeralds power at the same time. I also don't like the super over dramatic back story that sonic has for being way to uncanon. Sonics character is pretty good tho.
@@OlhoZe_ to be fair though, Shadow’s friends did die I always presumed that was the reason why he was so hotheaded in this series as he felt like he failed to save someone he loved and appreciated yet again. I’d imagine that he’d be incredibly upset and frustrated by it
This series was so much motivating and inspiring for everyone who watched it. It was so huge at that time, two universe that collide into each other, nobadoy had seen mario and sonic this way. This is a personal experience but, this series created so much ideas in my mind as a child... I wanted to create a game about this series, like making this series his own way to be played and be a part of the fights... It was a huge dream for me, and I always imagined battles ect... Creating different universes, using some of the most inspiring characters such as mario and sonic is something that will always make me dream Everyone have his own story about what this serie created in you're mind and feelings! Being able to imagine you're own scenarios using an already existing universe is awesome :) In reality, I just want to thank you Mark Haynes for creating such an inspiring work, and to wish you the best for the future I understand how hard it can be to maintain this serie I think everyone agree to say : thank you and take the time you need and most importantly... Make what you want to do! Sorry that's kind of an weird comment, but this is my thoughts that was in my mind that I wanted to explain :) (Sorry for the errors I'm not English native speaking!)
I, and many others, completely agree. It was the catalyst that sparked the imaginations of so many minds. Mario & Sonic crossover ideas have always been fun to think about, and I do hope one day the series' can see the light of such creativity without being related to the Olympic games lol
WAAAAIT! What if the animator that made Super Mario Bro's Z, Alvin Earthworm, and the animators who made Sonic: Two Worlds Collides, the people who did so at, collided and made one last movie that takes place after the series, although it never truely ended on English dub but I think it still did in a Spanish sub in some website but I'm not to sure but let's say it DID end still in a Spanish sub if there IS one, and the movie with the 2 actually revealing that the Sonics and Shadows from both things were the same Sonic and Shadow and that the Mario series is what happened before the movie to where Sonic and Shadow comes to Mario's world to ask for Mario and his friends' help to finding the Chaos Emeralds before Mecha Sonic to which they could say that Mecha Sonic was put into a forced shut down after whatever fight happened, if it actually ended with Mecha Sonic shutting down if not and it seems like he disappeared then ehhh they might as well say that he survived whatever fight that he'd have that'd ended up with him losing cause plot convince might as well to REALLY put in the DBZ theme although I'm just making this comment for ideas, to which would lead into Sonic: Two Worlds Collided and explain what did Sonic mean by Mecha Sonic being shut down and why would he be looking for the Chaos Emeralds specifically since it never explained it and if we were to go by game canon it'd still make no sense, although if others knows you're free to tell me, and the movie can take place after these 2 animation however-you-wanna-sum-both-ups to where Mario's team and Goku and Vegeta somehow ends up in Sonic's world to do something with the weird Black Orb thing and Chaos and Buu!
Finally can't wait to see Fire Sonic in all his badassery in 4K 60fps! And then hopefully in the reboot in the future. On a side note, I wonder if, with all the positive response to Fire Sonic, Mark is gonna try more power up combinations? Shadow with a metal mushroom, cape feather or invincibility star? Or maybe bring the power-ups from the sonic games? Elemental shields anyone?
I think why Fire Sonic worked so well was because of the suspension and anticipation. If Shadow or Sonic used more powers or use them frequently it would devalue it.
Dylan Ogega Don’t count on putting SMBZ in a box. Anything can happen after the Metallix saga. The Chaos Emeralds brought Sonic back to life in Sonic 06, the same year SMBZ started.
It's crazy to think that this series is so iconic that I actually remember the story in the different "arcs." Like "Oh bro the Yoshi Island Arc is so fire." type of thing.
God the Yoshi's island fight is crazy. Im so used to fight scenes in shounen being 1v1/2v1 centric with most of the main cast just sidelining/commentating. Having a massive team fight where everyone is throwing hands was such a change of pace. Some of the sequences where team mario and the koopa bros attack an axem ranger together and then either attack each other/use each other as a combo tool was amazing to watch. Really excited for the remaster.

I just found this after 13 years. I watched this in elementary and it honestly shaped my character a lot back then. This series had the story development (and in many cases, better fights) than most anime. Watching this truly is making me feel like a kid again. As a 25 year old artist, I can now see the immense amount of talent, passion and hard work that went into this series. On behalf of all of us, thank you Alvin! We love you!

mostly well written, after going back and rewatching the whole series, both shadow and mecha are written a bit silly, but that's the charm I love about it
Orthus I never really thought the original writing was that bad. There were a few moments here and there that felt a bit ham-fisted, but for the most part, I thought he wrote the characters pretty spot on to their canon counterparts. I just hope the updated version of Sonic and Shadow will still keep their Adventure era personalities.
Dude, this like is like pure talent being able to animate this hard, coming up with a interesting/compelling narrative/story, staying mostly true to the source material, while also like being able to make it your own
Mark, thank you for this. Despite all the pain and stress you’ve talked about on social media that you’ve endured, you’re still dedicated to finishing this project that so many of us grew up on. No matter how it turns out, just know that first and foremost, we’re all happy that you’re doing better.
I also love how Shadow in Episode 8 was the smartest. As rude as his wording was, Princess Peach could wait entirely. Bowser’s intentions have never been to kill Peach, but kill Mario and Luigi. Sonic was blinded by his overextended sense of heroism and forgot that Mecha Sonic is the bigger threat, who needed to be taken down ASAP. With the Chaos Emeralds (all 7), there’s no need to worry, and they will be able to save Peach just fine, since there won’t be a living thing or machine that could stop Super Sonic/Shadow. Shadow made the right call. Egotistic or not, the top priority is to grab all 7 chaos emeralds and save both Mario and Sonic’s universes by destroying Mecha Sonic into mere scrap metal. Shadow’s only mistake is that by going alone, he exposed himself to the immediate detection of Mecha Sonic, who destroys anyone who does not use all 7 emeralds. Shadow is no match for Mecha Sonic.
SuperSpeed Bros yeah, and I understand the reasoning that the story was crafted like this in the first place. I’m just interested in knowing what the story would be like had they ignored Bowser’s trap.
Anouar Esn you are WAY underestimating Mecha’s power. Every bout he has merely toyed with the team, he has stated that in the series, and Shadow’s chaos abilities are already replicated and enhances tenfold for Mecha Sonic. He’s essentially holding off the inevitable, his own demise.
So I've had this playing in the local retro game store I work in since 2 o clock. You wouldn't believe the number of random customers (tourists even) that recognised it, and the other half wanted to know what it was.
@@lucidwithastar Don't worry. The younger audience will catch up soon as they grow older. So far I've watched episode 4-6 yesterday, and right now, it's already badass as it is! 😊
@@lucidwithastarI am 24 but I didn't even know this existed. I was messing around with Bluemaxima's Flashpoint and found it. Watched them all in 2 days. It was one of the best flash animations I have ever seen. I am glad I got to experience it. I could have gone my entire life without it but it's better late than never. However, comments like yours are stupid and illogical, what does it matter if people didn't experience it during their childhood? They can experience it in their adulthood, like I did and I enjoyed it all the same. Kid or adult, it doesn't matter to me. Experience is all that matters. You don't have to feel bad about people who didn't grow up with it, like myself. I don't need your false pity. My happiness isn't limited to my childhood because I know how to truly enjoy life. Hah! Fivoune I didn’t include that one because I didn’t consider it a fight. It’s 7 seconds long and is more a way to move along the dialogue, with Metal Sonic not even throwing a punch.
3:12:30 - 3:14:14 THAT is how you do an anime teamwork fight. Even all those years ago, take notes anime producers. fans were doing it just as well if not a hundred times better even then. The way each and every attack somehow flows into another even if it's from the another character using the powers they have in creative ways is just staggeringly amazing. then factor in it was a fan work and it's even more insane.
Yeah Mark's choreography in this series is incredible vtye moves flow smoothly and he has their fighting style different from each other, especially the moves referenced from other series, like when Sonic uses Ryu Tatsumaki kick and Mecha Sonic uses Akuma's finisher. Also the combo attacks are beautiful.
I love SMBZ so much. Everything about it is amazing, I would’ve loved to see an Episode 9 but a reboot turned out to be even better. Super nostalgic for this series :)
Me? I'm hyped for the remastering of the doom ship attack. That's the pinnacle of greatness imo. I love yoshi's island, but I think, on top of seeing the doomship episode remastered, getting to see what Mark had in mind from the start will be amazing!
@@lucinavonnolaran8728 IIRC Basilisx or whatever isn't gonna be used so that will change. They likely will encounter the Koopalings. I hope he still has the insane choreography of their teamwork aboard the ship as they all mow down an army though.
I came into this expecting the Brawl on a Vanishing Island to be the highlight of the experience, but I honestly loved the last dialogue between Shadow and Sonic. This whole series is great, but that moment of character was exactly what made me adore Sonic Adventure 2; Shadow is the most compassionate person, simply blinded by grief, and I'm glad the series didn't simply try to portray Shadow as needlessly edgy and unreasonably angry. I hope this comes back in the remake.
When I was a kid, I watched SMBZ as it was first being uploaded! I loved this series so much, and it's so important for the person I grew up to be, honestly. I remember that I was so hyped for the new episodes as they were being released, that I started playing some fangames of it, until I discovered that some of them were made by game maker studio, and decided to check the tool out. Over the years I came to realize how much I liked creating games, and I spent the next few years brainstorming stories and gameplay mechanics for imaginary games. And now, almost 10 years later, I'm a recent graduate in Game Design! And, strangely enough, you can trace it all the way back to SMBZ! I love this series so much, and I can only thank you for creating such a masterpiece, Mark! Good luck with the reboot!
Just saw a 3D remaster of the intro in my recommended, and I checked it out and was like “this is great”. So I just binged this whole 3 and a half hour long video, and let me just say, this was astonishing. This story began before I was even born, and it’s amazing how far it’s progressed! I’m gonna go watch the remasters now.
One of the best villains ever. Mecha Sonic is absolutely terrifying. Like when he shows up I am always afraid for everyone's lives. He's everything you want in a villain
Mecha Sonic is periodically resistant to Sonic's Hyper Form in Sonic 3&K, making him one of the most dangerous villains. Fortunately, it’s only a limited time invulnerability, so he eventually gets destroyed in Sky Sanctuary Zone.
Mecha Sonic's "I'LL CRUSH YOU!!" Has become Iconic in my eyes. The raw power on display and just how easily he destroys the Axem Rangers AND our heroes single-handedly makes him one of the best villains I've EVER SEEN
As I've gotten older, the quality of this series only becomes more evident. The animation and the choreography are on-point even today, the music choices are really great, the references to Mario and Sonic games mid-battle are handled perfectly, the references to other games are handled in a way that don't detract from the fights, and even though the dialogue (which was never the point anyway) hasn't aged beautifully, the story in general does a great job of setting up stakes. And not to mention, maybe the most unappreciated part: All the characters act impressively close to how they do in their own games, but Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi's characterization in particular is quite literally perfect. It feels like an official work of Nintendo. They act like they did when Mario and Luigi's characterization was at its peak in Superstar Saga, Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story. Just crazy how consistent that part always was. Also...episode 6 remains a masterpiece. Thank you for this series.
@@skeleton819 No it wasn’t. No one talks about SMBZ’s dialogue years later. They talk about the choreography and animation, both for how amazing and ahead of their time they were, as well as how true they were to the characters’ abilities and personalities.

I'm probably commenting wayyyyy too late for anyone to see this but I want to get my thoughts on this series out there. When this series came out I wasn't older than 5. This was also around the time I first started using RUclips regularly. Since I didn't know how to navigate it very well I would watch the same videos over and over again. Somehow I found this series and something about it really clicked with me so I watched it many times. Years later I thought about this series and wanted to rewatch it but didn't remember the name so I just accepted that I wouldn't be seeing it again. That was until someone sent me the link to this video and my jaw hit the floor. I was super excited and clicked it immediately and began watching it. I don't remember much actual content in this series but I do remember how much I loved it as a kid. Thank you Mark for making a huge part of many people's childhoods.
well, who ever gave you that link must've had an idea that somehow involved you and sent you the link in the hope you'd feel happy finally getting to watch this incredibly funny series again
This was a huge part of my childhood, I watched it a couple of years too late (around 2012-2013) but I loved every second of it even when my knowledge of English was terrible back then.
@@pixy3266 What I'm saying is that future games they come up with won't be as epic and amazing as this, just the old usual rescuing Peach from Bowser scenario over and over and over. And they did shut down his Patreon a few years back. If I was the president of Nintendo, I would have talked with Sega to work on SMBZ games, after asking Mark for his permission and give him all the credit, of course.
@@DarkSteven17 yes! Sorry I think I didn't saw you're entiere comment I'm dumb. I agree that mario games are far different than anything Mark did, but mario isn't supposed to be this way I think. Mario have his own awesome universe, and I think we can't change it But it's true that for example smash is already way different than the friendly mario we all know, so something like SMBZ could be possible! But I don't think Nintendo will ever, because it can be too different or I don't really know... But what I know is that they don't work with other people often... The only real example of indie studio that worked on a real Nintendo licence is cadence of hyrule, but I still hope that they will be more in the future... But because Mark use the artwork and content of nintendo and other things like musics ect... Maybe it's like the modds and the fangame, they don't like that We are not Nintendo or Sega, but that will never stop us to dream and create our own worlds! Sorry for that kinda weird comment
Well, that battle will be changed completely. Most likely, they will fight either Koopalings or Mecha Mario at the location they fought Basilisx when reboot does that episode.
I just realized something after all this time. The Axem Rangers X "designs" are just the original heads of the Axem Rangers from SMRPG smelted on top of bodies from Mega Man Zero and Battle Network. Red, Black and Green are all Zero mostly because of the capes and also because of the slim build. Yellow is Guts Man from Battle Network because look at that hulking mass of a robot with the same "hammer". And Pink Is Roll from Battle Network because her idle stance is pretty much the same as Roll's in that game. I don't mean to poke fun at the designs because they're still really cool and all. It's just a realization I came by after all this time that I probably would have come by earlier on in life had I known how sprite animation works. It's from what I can tell all about sources and working with them to create the best scene you can. Which on a completely irrelevant note brings me to the episode 2 Bowser fight. You might have noticed that Bowser looks exactly like how he does in Superstar Saga. This was because Bowser's Inside Story wasn't out at the time. If it weren't for the "Rookie" Bowser sprites existing all Bowser could do was breathe fire. With this and a few Rookie sprites, Mark managed to ACTUALLY create a functioning Bowser fight with those sprites and some unique ones like the jumping sprite. Which I Fucking Love and Super Impressive for its time even though the fight itself isn't that great in comparison to the other fights in the series (which is thanks to a lack of SF3 Third Strike Super Flashes during slowdowns to really sell those hits).
That's cool to learn some of the history of the character designs. I never knew much about the axem rangers let alone where their sprites came from. I often have to take a moment to remember that this was created in the mid-2000s. Really ground breaking for its time. Thanks for sharing man.
I just realized this too while watching it. I recognized the bodies immediately because I'm a huge megaman dork but the heads I had no idea. It's nice to see that somebody else likes to pay attention to the small details!

*It's been 15 years since the original series has created! Time flies fast!* The first time I remember watching this series on RUclips was in 2008. At first, I do not know why the title of this series has the Z on it until I have finally realised that this series has many similarities to Dragon Ball Z because of the unforgettable sound effects including Super Saiyan and the abilities of each character have. However, I didn't watch the entire Dragon Ball Z series and know what it's about although I have already seen or heard of it. This series is the greatest thing I've ever watched back then. The fighting sequences are very intense and epic!

A subtle touch I quite like is the fact that the side villains use more kid-show-ish language "I'll destroy you!" "I owe him a knuckle sandwich!" but Mecha Sonic spares no expense coming up with the most disturbing descriptions of his intentions "Charred remains" "Mutilated carcass" Makes him stand out as the bigger fish.
"Brawl on a Vanishing Island" - even the title sounds fantastic. Echoing others here, I seriously cannot wait to see the potential remake of that little story arc. If it were to largely copy the original fight's choreography and interactions, I'd be more than happy.

This is like the cliffhanger of all internet cliffhangers. A fight that's gonna have to survive an entire reboot for us to see how it ends. I hope "Alvin" keeps it!
Yeah though some Hispanic fans tried to continue/finish the series in his absence over the years. I'm not sure if they somehow got access to the offical script, or if they improvised it though. I remember i tried watching some of it out of curiosity to see if the writing seemed as good as "Alvin" or Mr. Mark would have it. I knew the fan animation wouldn't be desirable, but it didn't seem to have the same midas touch in writing either. Nevertheless I didn't want to risk getting the plot spoiled by bad animations, so I banked on the idea that he would return. Not long after that he decided to reboot the series which is really cool, so now there will be some changes.
@@thereisnotryv1971 No. The reboot's 3rd Episode is still in development. The reason Mark decided that Basilisx should be cut from the series was due to his power to turn people to stone. It also was part of the reason why the 9th episode from the original series was never made in it's entirety. It would be kind of hard to bring Sonic and Yoshi back from being turned to stone, since only Luigi had the Tanooki suit to revert himself back to normal. That, combined with his insane multi-year burnout he experienced made it impossible for Mark to continue the "Mecha Sonic Saga" with the same quality standards as the previous episodes. Mark now is working on the "Metallix Saga" reboot.

He perfectly captures every characters personality and how they interact with each other and the audience. We couldn't have a better creator for such a series....
Absolutely, this is honestly the thing that has me so invested in the series. I love the fights for sure but nothing kills a fan made production for me faster than someone being out of character.

It doesn't takes long to realize this after these events we're presented with the Mushroom Kingdom and already the series is thematically playing with the idea of what would happen when something so destructible crossed to somewhere so innocent as the Mario universe, as we see Mecha blast to ashes an innocent Goomba;
Again, a Mario ENEMY against a Sonic ENEMY.
The reason why Sonic is in such a hurry of gathering the Chaos Emeralds meanwhile trying to help the Mario Bros. fix the issues brought by these is because he's constantly reminded his mistake led to his world's destruction, and HE KNOWS Mario's World is just as doomed. whereas Shadow already knows Mario's World was dead since the beginning because of the nature of the same; That's why he wanted Sonic to help him retrieve the Emeralds on their own, and keep a low profile, thought that's only being reinforced the more the series progresses as up until Episode 7 Shadow has already had it at progressing at a slow pace when Mecha Sonic is causing chaos and destruction at a fast rate;
The Mario World had never faced anything like Mecha Sonic, they weren't even prepared for something this destructive.
That said, based on what I've seen on the reboot I'm more than excited to see how far this idea is taken to considering how ingenious this story came to be. Mark didn't had to change ANYTHING about these characters and their origins to make them fit in a canon only to create a story where both could co-exist, it is their natural differences what solely served as a base to create an story about how unbalanced crossovers truly are and what it means when something so terrifying as Mecha Sonic faces against something as pure as Mario. It is that stake what, to me, makes the story stand-out all the more against other flash-based crossovers I saw growing up;
Because at its core it tells the tale of how one mistake led to the destruction of one world, and it caught another on its fire. Now both sides are trying to rectify that mistake.
This is a really well-put together analysis and review of the series, thanks for writing this!
so tldr, its peak
To summarize: Mario’s batshit insanity of a world and Sonics existential threat every week villains make a really fun combo
The war and peace of RUclips comments.
Interesting way to put it.
I'm not sure if I would give that little credit to the Mario characters or something, but idk I'm not a genius at this sort of thing. Though honestly, with this narrative especially, yeah, you right, I can tell. Mecha is kinda a big fish in a comparatively small pond or something
Idk, I'm probably not making much sense.

What about “I’ve let you live long enough!”
I can’t wait to see Mecha Sonic say “I’LL CRUSH YOU” and destroy the Axem Rangers in 4K

@@samueldesta2151 SMBZ came out in 2006 and originally discontinued in 2009. A lot of people that watch this series most likely saw it on Newgrounds when they were 12 or younger, myself included. I picked up on this series when episode 4 was in the making.
@@ryans-archive Lol no
3:12:07 Calling it now, THIS was the inspiration for Fire Donkey Kong in the new Mario movie.
Naive idealists are born, but cynical pragmatists are *made.*
Sonic, on the other hand, has his flaws in full consistent display as well.

It’s a tragedy that they still keep Shadow as an assist trophy in Smash Ultimate, otherwise we could have completed the SMBZ squad.

This series was made about 15 years ago and it's still the golden standard for sprite animation. Few on the internet have matched this level of quality.
Completely agree with this!
For me one of the best part of this series is how true to character everyone is. This man used these characters better than the companies that own them.
Shadow is actually not cringe
Sonic’s not stupid and Shadow’s soccer ball to kick around
@@ASOtheprO last I checked shadow doesn't care much for sonic as for sonic this series never portrayed him as stupid
@@OlhoZe_ to be fair though, Shadow’s friends did die
I always presumed that was the reason why he was so hotheaded in this series as he felt like he failed to save someone he loved and appreciated yet again.

Creating different universes, using some of the most inspiring characters such as mario and sonic is something that will always make me dream

No, don't apologize. I feel the exact same way.
I, and many others, completely agree. It was the catalyst that sparked the imaginations of so many minds. Mario & Sonic crossover ideas have always been fun to think about, and I do hope one day the series' can see the light of such creativity without being related to the Olympic games lol
@@thevoid8114 Duuude, me too! I am tired of seeing two adventuring heroes cross worlds to just participate in Olympic sports.
The only Sonic games I actually knew when I saw SMBZ was Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Colours, like that's it.
1:25:13 That mountain getting destroyed and the music transitioning to divine hate is one of my favorite parts of the whole series.
Agreed, and that episode is my best episode
Finally can't wait to see Fire Sonic in all his badassery in 4K 60fps!
And then hopefully in the reboot in the future. On a side note, I wonder if, with all the positive response to Fire Sonic, Mark is gonna try more power up combinations? Shadow with a metal mushroom, cape feather or invincibility star? Or maybe bring the power-ups from the sonic games? Elemental shields anyone?
I think why Fire Sonic worked so well was because of the suspension and anticipation. If Shadow or Sonic used more powers or use them frequently it would devalue it.
ThatMetroidGuy ‘Tis True
But if Mario used a Wisp in the next Saga after Metallix...

There were a few moments here and there that felt a bit ham-fisted, but for the most part, I thought he wrote the characters pretty spot on to their canon counterparts. I just hope the updated version of Sonic and Shadow will still keep their Adventure era personalities.
Fatty0666 I don’t want to see Sonic like he is in ANY property from the last ten years for this.
Dude, this like is like pure talent being able to animate this hard, coming up with a interesting/compelling narrative/story, staying mostly true to the source material, while also like being able to make it your own
what source material
Mark, thank you for this. Despite all the pain and stress you’ve talked about on social media that you’ve endured, you’re still dedicated to finishing this project that so many of us grew up on. No matter how it turns out, just know that first and foremost, we’re all happy that you’re doing better.
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Well said
So this is the official chanel?
Wait so has it been completed or he’s working on it as we speak?
Matthew Adu-Larbi after all these years it’s finally making a comeback????? Yooooo I can hardly wait wtfff
Just maybe them going to the Doomship would result in a much more complex storyline, had the series continued.
SuperSpeed Bros yeah, and I understand the reasoning that the story was crafted like this in the first place. I’m just interested in knowing what the story would be like had they ignored Bowser’s trap.
HyperStar Gaming doesn’t eggman could told him about mecha sonic
You think Shadow can't beat Mecha? I think he can hold off for a bit. Shadow has 1 Emerald i believe so he should be stronger no?
Anouar Esn you are WAY underestimating Mecha’s power. Every bout he has merely toyed with the team, he has stated that in the series, and Shadow’s chaos abilities are already replicated and enhances tenfold for Mecha Sonic. He’s essentially holding off the inevitable, his own demise.

IIRC Basilisx or whatever isn't gonna be used so that will change.

Mecha Sonic is periodically resistant to Sonic's Hyper Form in Sonic 3&K, making him one of the most dangerous villains. Fortunately, it’s only a limited time invulnerability, so he eventually gets destroyed in Sky Sanctuary Zone.
It’s too bad the cannon sonic games sold him short , he’s such a bigger threat here
Mecha Sonic's "I'LL CRUSH YOU!!" Has become Iconic in my eyes. The raw power on display and just how easily he destroys the Axem Rangers AND our heroes single-handedly makes him one of the best villains I've EVER SEEN
Jimanky Gaming ikr
Plus that was just him in semi super form. I would hate to imagine how he would be with all seven.
He did some nice fatalities there
Just watching that scene. it's awesone

The Axem Rangers x Koopa Bros x Heroes fight is still one of the best sequences in flash animation history.
So luigi was supposed to turn back using the tanooki suit, then join Mario with defeating Basilisx and saving the others, according to Mark himself.
Well, that battle will be changed completely. Most likely, they will fight either Koopalings or Mecha Mario at the location they fought Basilisx when reboot does that episode.
@@suckerman7gm They're going straight to the Koopalings, if I remember correctly. After that is Mecha Mario.
Somehow I remember watching this
@@suckerman7gm basillix will come back or he is vanished from the series?
This was a non canon episode
Thanks for pointing this out. Now they look extremely weird and uncanny to me.

The Basilix was gonna be cut from the reboot so the battle wouldn't continue
@@FumanyuX you use past tense. Has the reboot been offically killed?
