At some point I realized I had to stop micro organizing and minimizing and do a huge purge, both physical and mental. Absolutely no more buying new clothes, and getting rid of clothes ... no exception ... that I have not worn in 1 year. Same for other areas like bathroom, kitchen, etc.

I saw someone say recently in regards to getting rid of something that you never got much use out of that “money is not wasted at the time of decluttering, money was wasted at the time of purchase” and that has helped me so much. Theres no reason to hold onto something out of guilt, all it does is bring more guilt!

Carla, you are one of the best decluttering and organizing RUclipsrs out there! You’re successful because of MANY reasons, which are: just jumping right in” and starting, your soothing voice explaining your reasons for decluttering each different category, your choice of music that isn’t loud and annoying (like SO many other videos out there)! I appreciate that you talk to us thoroughout your entire video. Lastly, I hope you continue to do more friends and family videos.

My favorite tip on eliminating clothes I no longer wear is to change my hangers. I switched to the velvet style and started putting only freshly washed clothes on these. After 6 months; I can easily see what clothes I don't wear during that season by what is still on the original hangers. Anything that wasn't on the new hanger I didn't store for next year and the rest were immediately bagged up to be donated.
This isn't a quick fix, but if you are having issues with letting clothes go; this might help to see the visual.

Keeping a sheets in a pillowcase, a fitted bottom and a flat sheet inside the appropriate pillowcase is a fantastic idea!
I have guest sheets and what not that I have been keeping fitted sheets with fitted sheets, flat sheets flat sheets. But putting them together in a pillowcase makes it so much easier to hand it out to people when they come to stay.
    _What a brilliant idea!_

Awe…I love that you are actually manifesting your dream home by creating it now in your current space. That’s how it starts. I’m down to 9 pair of shoes and I don’t buy anything unless something I already have is not looking presentable or I can’t give it a proper refresh. I take up one small drawer and two larger drawers in our dresser and a small area of the closet holds tops and pants. Only a few fall/winter things are in a bag under the bed. My puffer coat and two sweaters. I have a very short list for shopping this year and I may not even buy them. It has taken me a very long time to get to this point. Like 4 years and it’s been gradual. Even my jewelry is minimal. The area that I have to have a tighter rein on myself is cosmetics. I am getting closer to using up things I’m not going to buy again with cosmetics and for me this encompasses everything. Hair, skincare, makeup, nail supplies, perfume. Once I get it all used up I’m going to treat myself to a massage instead of buying more lipsticks & face creams. 🙄 Can’t wait to see the closet…keep going girl it’s all looking so good. ❤😊

    Carla you rock!!!!
I had gorgeous boots is might have used once and after many many many years I too gave them away. Because they didn‘t actually fit me and my style, I didn‘t really regret them.
On the other hand, I have several very high heels which are gorgeous and though I don‘t use them seeing I barely go out, I find it hard to get rid of them.
I‘m very impressed by your ability to get rid of stuff you love.
Your home is coming together so nicely.
You and Samson deserve a home in which you both feel perfectly happy. But I bet he would feel happy anywhere as long as he is with you.

But a mindset that really helped me get over that is repeating to yourself that the money was already gone or 'wasted' the moment you bought it. So you don't have to feel guilty thinking you're wasting money by donating it.

You have the window so it wont feel so enclosed. This way you have everything hooked up and set up. No more moving stuff around and you can just close the door and you wont see it. Just a thought.

I've been in the decluttering phase for awhile now. I go in starts/stops, but lately it's been pretty non stop in getting through areas. The pesky ones like the junk drawer in the kitchen, the desk drawers, closets, under the sinks, pantry, kitchen, coat closet, the ones that don't always get as much attention. I've also been doing a major overhaul on my closet.. That one is taking awhile, because I'm doing a hour at a time here and there. So it's definitely in the in between stage where it looks worse before it gets better. It's not that far off of me making it through the entire house. Some areas I've gone over and redone, and it's feeling so much nicer. I've let go a lot of things I like that I don't use, books I know I won't read again, puzzles I know I won't work again, and sadly clothes that no longer fit ! I could definitely be more ruthless but I feel like I'm still making good progress. I can't wait to see your closet wall paper ! You're really getting your place so streamlined. I also ordered some new winter sheets but I'm waiting until I get everything done and wrapped up in the bedroom ( closet ) and then I'll break them out.

I actually went from a “real” dresser to one of the wire drawers your getting rid of. I used those felt baskets to organize my socks, underwear, bras in one shelf and then kon mari folded my tops in one and bottoms in another… it’s always so satisfying to see all the clutter leave your space, I just did a big trip to the donate store and immediately got home and felt like my apartment was lighter.

Good job! A couple of suggestions to consider… I found that my linen closet was prime for too much stuff that I didn’t really need , that I could feel good about donating where people that really needed it could have access to it. Thrift shops , homeless shelters, even animal shelters for towels, blankets etc. As far as minimalism goes in this area and because in my life I have had times that I felt really overwhelmed and traumatized by laundry, now days I like to just have one nice set of sheets that I really like for every bed.. on laundry day, I strip the bed, pop the sheets in the washer then in the dryer and then back on the bed. Okay, I could see having a spare set for each bed for emergencies or if one just didn’t feel like it that day. But really, beyond that? Not really necessary in my opinion. Clutter. Towels are another. When I first got together with my partner of 17 years we would go places and see towels, mainly purple, and always buy two.. they weren’t particularly the best .. long story, when we moved, we had like twenty bath towels. Totally silly and a waste of money, and a big pile of laundry. I had already learned from camping out all summer with my kids that everyone had their own towel in their favorite color and it was part of their laundry and their responsibility to take care of. So after those two extremes, I have landed somewhere in between, after my remaining towels were getting raggedy, I decided to get myself some new towels and tear up and make the remaining old ones into rags that now live in their own special basket in the hall closet. I have a small set of four each, bath towels, hand towels, wash clothes( in purple )😊Enough for the rare house guests but not ever crazy, use once and pile in the laundry situation. Anyway, how I keep it manageable for me. Keep up the good work and remember about peeling back the layers.. you are doing a fabulous job!

I'm doing the same thing. My apartment looks great and feels really great. I'm taking one more look at my closet with unwanted clothes and it should be a wrap. Unfortunately, it took me a couple of months to take care of everything in the apartment, but it's done.

Same here 😌🌸 Thank you for sharing and i am looking forward to the make over part! Warm greetings from the rainy Netherlands, Nora. Ps: working on another round of decluttering myself 🥳 it’s great to realize what can be set free so to speak 🙏🏻

@@TheCarlaProject My sister and brother in law retired after 20+ years in the military. Sold their house, left their investment properties with a management company and moved…. to Portugal. Yes, Portugal! No family, no friends, don’t speak the language. They, their two kids and dog just picked up and moved. We thought they were crazy. Jokes on us because three months later and they look 10 years younger. They are glowing. If that’s not an endorsement to seek a countryside, I don’t what is🙂 I think the English countryside and it’s residents would benefit from the Carla Project decluttering their lives❤️

I,too, have been wanting a dresser. I have three large elfa carts and one from IKEA. I’ve repurposed them for over 15 years. I have decided I I’m no longer keeping organizational products in hope I will use them again. I started a pile in my dining room and boy has that gotten tall. I’m only keeping natural fiber baskets and drawer organizers. Now to buy a dresser I do not have to build myself.

Hi Carla, I have been enjoying your videos! I think it is so common for people to keep things they don't use or wear because of guilt that it didn't work out. I'm learning that it is okay to let those things go because it was not a waste - it taught me something! My clutter thresh hold is getting lower too! The more I declutter, the more I want to let go of things! I have to say, 13 pairs of shoes is impressive! Nice job! Can't wait to see the closet when it's done! Thanks for sharing!💗

Thank you for the motivation to declutter my master bedroom. I was only hoping you'll film while discarding in the trash stuff that can't be donated as it's for me the hardest part of decluttering. And the master bedroom is where I keep most of the things that I struggle to toss like fashion magazines/catalogs/flyers and any clothes that can't be donated. So I always hope to see someone tossing few of those things, mostly in master bedroom declutter videos 🤭
