I can't wait to see your second review of this gun. I've been using it now for a month straight and I'm getting glass with PPG hs clears like dc4000, etc. I never really paid attention to the "air pressure at the cap" as mentioned on tech sheets but, funny thing, the Dv1 sprays best for me when the digital gauge reads anywhere from 11-14psi. Sometimes I go up to 17psi. I basically treat the Dv1 like an LVLP.
I have done 10 years of painting work and always I have used Iwata Ws 400 1.4hd for clear and It is the best gun in the market!!
It gets the job done and it’s consistent every time! I agree.
I find bumping up the pressure above what reps recommend helps in most cases.
We tested this gun out and got the same results. We kept trying different settings and tips. We finally went to a 1.2 tip at 29lbs and it sprayed really nice. We were also using a very high solid clear. The only problem was we had a lot of overspray which ended up wasting a lot of clear.
I don’t think the dv1 clear gun is in a lot of people’s hands.
I sold mine because it was too slow but bought another one now with the c2 cap. Faster and great finish
I see the difference in it . I'll never give up my iwata for clear coat
And I won't lie I'm still stuck on using my 3m accuspray guns for base and pearls and one for primer
Got some monday morning vibes from this video.
I tried the 1.2 didnt like the slow application. Then tried the 1.3 and instantly fell in love. Must say i prefer it over the ws400. Fluid and fan wide open and 1.5bar on the digital gague. Lays it down fast and flat
Quick tip if you want it 🤷🏻♂️ inlet pressure and the pressure reading on the digital screen on a DV1 are different on all 3 of mine inlet 20psi on a regulator is 10 psi on the digital regulator I talked to a rep and he said it’s closer to the cap and is closer to cap pressure so the next thing is if your rep told you 18 psi where did he want the 18 psi to read at on a regulator fitting ? Or on the digital regulator ? 18 psi sounds a little aggressive for cap pressure when I sprayed auto base and auto clear all the TDS sheets always said 10 psi max cap pressure for hvlp applications I think it’s something you could probably have experimented with but at the same time different guns suit different painters personally when I got my first DV1 I got rid of my satas and Iwatas and now that’s all I use
Would like to see a follow up to this review. The DV1 clear gun is awesome, I’m not sure what happened.
Sounds crazy, but you might wanna dial back that air even more. Maybe 16-18. That 2nd coat looks great
Try the C2 cap, it’ll spray out thicker and faster
Hell yeah! Supernova for life! 😎
Great gun!
good review :) Surely bumping the pressure up a little, would of helped though? less orange peely?!?
Just used the dv1 clear with ppg ec520. Slow reducer and on some large jobs. Phenomenal finish. I feel like it's a speed and overlap issue. Tighten the overlap and slow down a tick and you'll get the same results if not better than the ws400. I understand slowing down isn't what a lot of guys are looking for but that's just the difference in preference. I've got one of the 5500x I nozzles, two ws400, and numerous others I've cleared with. For things I want flat flat I'll use a dv1 for speed I'll use my sata (or gm factory peel). Psi was on the money though. Give it another go and try slowing down just a touch.
I also used a 1.3 tip.
I agree with you. I feel like I didn’t really give the gun a fair chance and was quick to switch. I would be interested in doing a further demo with different clears and changing my spraying technique as you have suggested. Thanks for the comment and sharing helpful info!
@@PaintSociety of course man. That's how I felt about the dv1 base at first too. Only having a day or two is really hard to judge a gun. Took me a week to dial in the base gun. I feel like the clear version has its place but again it may not be for everyone.
That basecoat gun is really nice. One of the best base guns I have ever used
@@PaintSociety absolutely agree
Just so you know I'm 55 and i frist shot sikkens in 1984 it's the best keep up your good work!!!
55 and still at it? Man I love that stamina. Good for you! Thanks for the sub and yes what an awesome system
Thats 29psi @ the inlet is recommended. On your DV1 digital gauge thats going to read 22psi ( essentially add 7 to what you see on your DV1 gauge to get the true inlet pressure. Im not sure why they did that but its in the manual.
I own or have owned every devilbiss, Iwata & Sata for the past 20 years and Id have to agree with you about the WS400 HD. its my go-to gun when shooting HS clears,(thats what I spray 95% of the time) but I just wanted to point out that your Iwata WS 1.4HD is "pumping" out 240ml/mn of fluid @29lbs psi inlet and full trigger. I have yet to get my hands on the new DV1 clear gun but Im fairly confident its not even breaking 200ml/mm in a 1.4 so that information alone has to have you consider your overlap, speed and distance are going to be huge factors in how the gun performs next to your Iwata with the same conditions & clear. Your review is well done and I can appreciate the honesty! I hope the specs are better clarified for anyone interested. Keep up the great work!!
DV1-C1 Recommended Air Pressure at Digital Gauge 1.5 bar (22 psi) = 29psi inlet
What an impressive post and you are very correct. So many factors do go into the design of the gun, thus meaning you need to find your sweet spot with every gun. In hindsight, it is a great gun, will it take over the market? I’m not definite on that.
I’ve just ordered a 1.3 with a C2 air cap. I have just switched for Max Meyer 0300 to Noval Spectral 545 bit il try the gun with both. Also currently using a Iwata supernova. I know il need to go slower with more overlap but just fancied owning another gun 😃
Crazy that it was dry with you spraying 2 inches from the surface
Put 5% reducer in your clear, open the the needle that controls the amount all the way out and 3 turns in with the fan and the see how it sprays :)
Love me 5% reducer. This was an amateur review. Sorry!
Recomends 29 going in, 22 at the digi guage...pressure is way low.
YOU ARE THE BEST IWATA KING
Love iwata
Best gun I've ever used...by far...is the old school Devilbiss MBC siphon gun. Tried many a gun, all of which will do the job, but none bring out the best in a paint like those old MBC's. Would love to have a few of them in my arsenal.....
I have the GTI Pro Lite and Iwatta WS 400. I use each for different purposes. I like both. I think for the money , they are the best offerings out there. Sata is too big and heavy, and I don’t like the trigger either. Great video Brother....💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Audio is good on the head mount Brian, but the view was mostly your lower body when you were spraying the bottom of the car, thanks for the review
It’s a constant issue I battle with and I cringe every time it’s pointing toward the ground. . I’m trying to get the angle right. I need to start using my phone to mirror the go pro to see what I’m spraying before I start recording. I’m going to work on that 👍👍
You didn't give the DV1 a fair shake. The DV1 demands that you slow down your gun speed because of it's slower delivery rate. You blasted through 2 coats like you were off to the races and then, ironically, you slowed down your gun speed by at least half when using the Super Nova. I agree, the Super Nova is a beast but if you slowed down your gun speed with the Iwata to where you need to be with the DV1, you'd run that to the floor, specially if you spray from the bottom up. Slow down your gun speed with the DV1 and spray so gravity is to the dry side of your wet line and that gun will surprise you. I know from first hand experience, if you use the C1+ aircap, slow your gun speed down to about 1/3 of what you'd normally move at, take your time, watch your wet edge and the DV1 will be your new favorite clear gun. I have Iwata's, Sata's, 3M's and old school DeVilbiss guns....the DV1 takes some learning but slow n steady wins the race...{I'd rather take a little longer and end up with a super flat, glasslike finish than power through it just to save a few pennies. Just my work ethic.} Out of curiosity, why do you not like spraying 3 coats of clear? In my shop, if 3 coats isn't your minimum, you're just ripping off the customer, and I'd fire you if i caught you. I know that seems to be the norm lately with the young guns, however, I've been in the custom paint world for over 45 years, and i believe in giving the customer full value for what they're paying...but, again, that's just my work ethic. Anyway, that's my 2 pesos....maybe it isn't worth much more than that.
Hi Brian I like the way you taped up those handles I always like picking better ways of doing things 👍
Yea! Simple and easy tricks do go a long way
I switched all my guns over to the DV1 series and my primer gun to a Anest Iwata Kiwaimi 1.8mm. I was a die hard Walcom guy for almost 2yrs and they sprayed great but they simply did not last before several issues with multiple ones at the same time and the manufacturer didnt want to help so i went dv1
I just bought me a new spray gun today , and i went for the Iwata ws400s2. And that because the new split nozzle .
If u sprayed clear like that where I work with the paint we use it wld be on the floor..but like the video thought about buying one of there's
I’m a sata guy, but the ws is in my Arsenal! Nice vid
Problem was the setup the rep gave you. I never get good results spraying under 25 with DV1 clear.
on my dv1 base I get it to lay down wet on 27 psi maybe try turning up the pressure also I use the 1.4 on thicker clear the gunman changed the 1.2 for the 1.3 from the base to speed the clear gun up
Don't listen to reps mate, base coat air cap runs 16-18psi & clear coat air cap c2 25-30 psi fan about 1 1/4 in
I used both for base and clear 1.2 and 1.3.I didn't like it.
I prefer pro lite te20 and t110
I've been using devilbiss over 14 yrs.
Great company! Just haven’t nailed the clearcoat gun yet.
5500x is good for big panels and thick coats of clear/ euro finish
Pro lite is good for everything but the best for fine finish like asian type of gloss
Own both of them, but must admit I like ProLite better, Sata takes time to be your friend.
Brian...always a straight talker and if somethings not right you let it be known.im usually a devilbiss lover but seems the dv1 clear has really fallen short.
Il stick with pro lites still but I have just ordered the ls400 entech for base....so hopefully that will live up to the hype.
It really comes down to what you want in a spray gun. I have the Sata 5000, Iwata ws400, Sagola 4600, the Devilbiss prolite and the dv1. They all work great. The Dv1 has a finish the the others can't match. But it is slower.
nice review and love the honesty
Yes! Usually raw footage gets my best reaction. How I feel in the moment!
Hola buen trabajo Saludos desde Uruguay 🇺🇾
They released a second aircap called the c2+ which goes on wetter so you can move faster, I have both c1+ & c2+ caps and its a definitely much better. Maybe give it another go with the c2+
Ws400 for the win
Just did e demo myself with the dv1 and same issue with the clear,.....im going one size bigger on the fluids and see what happens. And i also had to go back to my lp400 to finish my clear..
Glad I’m not alone. I’m a bit more disappointed that dramatic changes weren’t done to the gun to automize the clear better. I feel like it lacks the backbone to do the job. It’s almost as if they just changed the color, sprays so similar to the regular dv1.
I'm in the same situation I can't find any gun that is more consistent with nice finishes than my ws400. Even the new satas do not compare to the ws400. In my opinion.
I couldn’t agree more. The ws400 is consistent every single time. I know it’s dependable. I’m not a sata guy, doesn’t mean they don’t make a great product but I find iwata a fan to be more to my liking.
Try walcom 360 hte clear beats sata and iwata all day
West-ltd thanks! Been trying to get a rep to drop on off for demo. I hear great things about it.
Nice Brian it’s nice to see I was just actually looking at the DV one bass gun and I want to see this video because I heard you had said something that you should’ve given the DV one clearcoat gun a little bit more time to play with it so I want to check out what was going on with that and thanks for the information I actually have and I Wata for clear it’s a great gun but nice to know I would like to know more about the DV1 basecoat gun how that goes up against Sata jet that’s what I’m using for my base right now it would be great thanks for the great Information as usual Love to watching you work.🤙
Hmm, seen a few guys get amazing results with DV1 clear gun. To me it’s like the 5500 Sata, really good for a flat clear but I’ll go for my pro lite for most regular production work.
User error with me. Wrong tip size and application. I since bought the gun and will be re reviewing
Paint Society I figured, hey I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your content man. Like all good painters I try to constantly look at the way other guys approach jobs, and your systems are excellent. Look forward to hearing your impressions after more time with the DV1. The DV1 and The Sagola 4600 are both guns I’m very interested in running.
I like Divilbis and Iwatta. Both great brands and quality. Sata feels to big and heavy when painting. Good quality, just doesn’t feel right. Keep up the great content Brother!!!👍🏼
Honestly I can usually find something I like about just about any spray gun. Devilbiss to me really nails the production collision repair sprayer. Easy to get factory peels, very good material transfer efficiency, durable, look cool, affordable and very easy to pick up and get good results with. I’ve seen some epic fails with new painters running Sata clear guns.
Nothing beats the ws400 when it comes to clear!but remember it took time to set the iawata up just right.dv1 might be the same
Totally agree! Love the ws400. Should have given the dv1 more time
@@PaintSociety I love it for base
christian beahm dv1 for base. Too easy
I used the DV-1 CC gun the other day using Nason Select clear 465 which is reduced 20% (on the data sheet to do so). I run the fan full, then in 1/4 turn, fluid wide, 22 psi on the digital read out.
Shot two coats and used 75% overlap on each. The Nason clear is not the ultra expensive show car stuff, but the gun laid it down like glass and was very forgiving for runs. Easy to use compared to cheaper guns I have used.
I'd love to see you follow this up, but certainly get it if you don't. Thank you for your honesty. Rare these days.
Thats was like comparing apples to oranges..iwata 1.4 nozzle Dv1 1.2 nozzle
Ur killing me with the prepsol on the car just put it on the rag!!!
Like you’re dying ? Over prep solvent on a car
Yea just kill me now!!!
I don't like that gun either. I use Sata 5000 to for clear and I'm happy
So you're used to shooting your Iwata and you sprayed a DV1 the same and it didn't turn out the way your Iwata sprayed...amazing. You have to slow down A LOT. Once you use the DV1 the way it needs instead of spraying like your Iwata you might have a whole different view. I tell ya what slow down and spray the DV1 like a DV1 and then spray your Iwata like you spray with a DV1...you'll wish for a dry finish as you're sanding runs the length of whatever you sprayed.
Glad you did the review 😃what tip size were you using? how did you like the base dvi?
Also how’s the Sikkens Solvent working out?
Hey! I used the 1.4 because I feel like that works best with pc and fast pack.
I truly love the dv1 base. I have one for myself and use it on all Metallics.
Sikkens solvent is the best paint I have ever sprayed especially when it comes to blending.
I like a 1.3 better for clear myself.
The needle/nozzle of these guns are not equal. Even though manufacturer might give a size in millimeters you would find that some of these are smaller or larger than specified. These manufacturers need to get their act together and say exactly what the size is and what they recommend for your environment and material/viscosity/etc. you put down. The paint reps assume a certain size so take what they say with a grain of salt, especially with a brand new gun.
The tip size you have on this gun would probably work well in a cooler environment.
I think thats the base gun and the silver one is the clear gun i use the black one for base
No
being there done that. iwata brakes the material more.
All these new guns being released still playing catch up to the iwatas lol ,,and the iwata is the oldest of them all presently
Iwata released a few guns and chilled years ago. Sata releasing one every year at Sema and still can’t compete
The 5000s are pretty good for clear but nothing comes close to an iwata
Mark Mikheyev I have a 5500 brand new in the box. Thinking of selling.
I dont like to wear tshirts with corporate logos on it, but yeahhh Iwata is the leader ,the boss ,like my old friend told me almost 2 decades ago " just get an Iwata gun and put aside the bullshi.."
J. Hari for the purpose of the channel I have to stay as mutual as possible so to give everyone a chance but let’s be real. I grab that iwata every time for clear
To be honest everyone has a diferent opinion on spray guns that's why you cant really focus too much on wat others use. Choose wat works for you in your environment some say nay some say yes.
very verticle photography
Your camera angle is all messed up, but thanks for the vid
Old video.
Thanks for the video.I was thinking of getting the DV1 but after seeing this I think I’ll pass
I would highly recommend still the regular silver dv1. Great gun!
Try the c2 cap and 1.3 tip. You’ll like it then
Oh I love it now with the c2
Just wondering why you panel painted the hood ??? other then that , Good Video
looked like the dv1 just cant pump the same volume as your iwata. What a shame, of course the weather didn't help, but still your movement with your iwata was just night and day compared to the devilbiss. For now ill stick with my Tekna prolite. Cheers and stay sprayin.
You said it just right. “Pump”. That’s the word I wanted. It’s like the dv1 clearcoat is sorta like the beginners gun that just wanted to be conservative. The ws400 gives me what I want each and every time. Thanks for the comment. Pro lite is a great gun!
I’m painting 33yrs now at a collision center.I hate my DV1. It sprays like a $20 gun. I’m iwata all day !!!
Are you saying the dv1 clear gun is no good
Can you review the Meiji Finer Core next?? 😁
It would be nice if while you are spraying something on it (music was playing) you mention what it is, no time would be lost as you are playing the music. Now I am wipe it with such and such de greaser or soap and water, more water with just a little dawn soap......... Those of us that would like to do diy would like to know. Thanks for the videos.
G’day mate seeing how you’re used your DV1 more from this was your first time using it my question is do you still rate your WS over the DV1 I just got a dv1 and like yourself not fully sold on it as feels like it’s starving I’m using it just under 2 bar at the gauge at the bottom of the gun as mines a non digital?
Are the Iwata WS400 Super Nova and the Iwata WS400 Black Mamba practically the same thing?
you can see the difference in the clear between the dv1 an iwata it's a good thing you didn't buy the dv1 . I USE THE SATA 5000 HVLP for base an SATA 1000B RP for clear was no issue most of the videos in youtube are spot repair not much complete paint over thats where you will see how well a gun really is.never had ws400 but had the supernova ls an the lph 400 with the chrome cap that fail you had to close the fan to get a even pattern put the orange cap that spray clear an basecoat with no issues on spot repair but they struggle when doing complete paint over.
Good point. Lph400 wouldn’t be a good overall gun because it does move very slow. In regards to the cap, that orange base cap works very well with clear! In the end it personal preference and there isn’t a right or wrong gun. Thanks for your comment. Really appreciate if!
Replace it with a 1.3 tip glass evey time
Also the dv1s come with 3 (1.2/1.3/1.4) different tip sizes that could be another variable aside from cap/digital regulator/ inlet pressures
I have a question who paid you for this movie
I just seen the gunmans review and he has his pumped at 29psi vs 18psi?
Max is 29psi on that gun. Suggested to be around 18-20
Slackerz, it's best not to compare this guy to anything that the Gunman does. Gunman is like lightyears ahead in terms of skill and experience.
Did you have the 1.2mm nozzle in. Maybe the 1.3 would have been better.
Stepped down to the 1.2 and just couldn’t get the fluid out well enough. Our clears our thick. I would like to try it again but with a different clear
@@PaintSociety Isnt the WS400 a 1.4mm?
Dave Gatt yes 1.4 in the ws400. Handles it very well. Used the 1.2 1.3 and 1.4 in the dv1 clear and just wasn’t sold. Check my video tomorrow set to release at 3pm est.
Ha cool, I have the new DV1 Clear gun and will be making a video for my other channel.
Dave Gatt would love to subscribe. What’s the channel name ?
Hi bro.. I'm from Indonesia.. Thanks
How do you feel now about the dv1's? Also with the dv1's and now the series 2 iwatas. Whats your reviews between these guns?
Dv1 is a great gun. Still a little slow but now being older and a better painter, i should have taken more time to learn the gun
@PaintSociety which would you prefer dv1's or iwata series 2? Looking for new setup. Have a gti pro lite, had a supernova that i sold(regret that), and just sold my sata 5500rp. I hated that gun
I thought I was the only one that hates that gun. Sprays way too much material and doesn't atomize just right.
question
Hi! It would be highly appreciated to know the nozzle size, base coat, clear coat that you use, temperature during application, air pressure etc. in the description box bellow the video ;-)
Hey! I am using sikkens and running 1.4 tip. Is a thicker basecoat. I find it works best with the 1.4. Clearcoat 1.4 as well.
Temp during spraying is 78-85. I use slow everything. Around 34 psi on ws400. Dv1 around 16
Is very good, my teacher
Your iwata ws400 supernova is it 1.3 for clear
Nice work! Have you ever used that gun to spray basecoat with a 1.2 tip or can it be used for that aswell?
I’m sure it can be but I use the DV1 base for base. It’s a great gun.
@@PaintSociety i normally use thinner to ckean my gun is it safe to do it with rhis gun aswell ?
Rene Gomez yes
I want to purchase new gun for clwar please tell me which gun is topmost good quality
Iwata ws400 ?
Please what is the name for that clear gun?
Whats in the two different spray bottles???
the Iwata ws400 is still my favorite clear gun. the new Sagola 4600 dvr clear is also good!

What are you spraying before you wipe down at the 1:00 mark?
My iwata
Waterbase one of the best
You can't spray the dv1 like you spray the Iwata. Dv1 is slower and will get glass finish if done properly. Iwata a great gun also but much quicker. Almost glass finish
You are correct. I did not use this gun properly
@@PaintSociety Did you try it again?
I have a brand new one in the box I’m going to do a follow up video on it
You do a fantastic job with channel. Excellent work
@@jeremyoetken2094 thanks J!
Dv1 or sagola xl for clear for Flattest finish?
I think you Need to used a couple times to dialing the settings and know you will killit with Gun
I have worked with the gun after the review and it’s a good clear gun, but it doesn’t suit my style. I still would recommend this gun.
Ok is a preference thing i use a ws 400 and i dont loved for clear y use a Sagola 4600 for clear that is my Work horse
Jaime Rodriguez turn your fan three turns in from completely open and turn your fluid one turn in from wide open. Completely different gun. Run it around 33psi
What’s the difference between the dv1 clear coat gun and base gun is it just the caps
Fluid tips are also different
It must be 130° in there
Whats your fan at on the iwata?
I have just seen this on the tv but how wide open was you fluid and how much did you reduce the clear 10% or 20%. But I am a Sata fan. I use that same Sikkens in the Bahamas. My Sata's are jaminh
Hey! Wide open on the fluid, and I didn’t reduce. I want to get my hands on it again and see what I can do with it again! Merry Christmas !!
Nice gun .
Thanks!!
I use Iwata and Satas and to me the Iwatas are easier to keep clean . I don’t like Sata’s inner plastic bezel thats sits inside before placing your fluid nozzle in, its plastic and traps a lot of junk in between the cut outs . The older Satas like the 2000 series were great guns and easy to keep clean . I love Iwatas and are my first choice and second are the Sata 5000 series and 3000 .I tried devilbiss you used in your video and is great for high metallic colors but feel it uses more material for covering and it’s a bit heavy specially with that weird rectangular digital gauge. I don’t know how long that gauge will last while using a gun cleaner for so long and if it will leak air in the future . Devilbiss guns in my opinion Spears beautiful in the beginning but after a year and a half it doesn’t feel the same anymore where as my Iwatas still spray the same as say one .
What made you go back to the DV1?
More mature painter now
@@PaintSociety I had the same type of problem with it win first started using it
I went to paint shop to buy an iwata n someone recommended the entech I go back again and recommended a diferent gun because of this or that. Lol
have u try dv1 basecoat gun as a cleargun? they say it can..can u try it?
I haven’t but Mario has. And he loves it. I will try it and let you know.
What gun would be great for a new painter or has some history
Tony's DIY Vehicle Flips & Rebuilds Tennessee get a iwata w400lv easy on the pocket and an awesome performer
Iwata lph400 and 400lv are great guns. You can also look into the devilbiss starting line which is exactly what you may need
@@PaintSociety I believe for a good gun the Iwati will be good and possibly cheaper on my
Tony's DIY Vehicle Flips & Rebuilds Tennessee give it a try. I do recommend iwata.
@@PaintSociety Will do I will check and order me one Thanks
What did u apply before the base coat?
That is clear base bending agent
Hmm never seen anyone do that. What’s the benefit of it compared to just doing base and clear?
BULLI KID check out my Lexus repair in my library. It explains it in details. It helps fill in micronfine scratches and aids in keeping the edge of your blend smooth.
@@PaintSociety I was going to ask the same question 😁. Will check out the Lexus repair.
