  • The 2019 Volvo XC40 is Volvo's newest SUV but also their smallest, and despite massive competition from every angle there's a buzz around this car. The XC40 T3 R-Design is the newest addition to the range, and it might have a small three-cylinder engine but it shouldn't be ignored.

    I got my XC40 T3 Inscription three weeks ago. What surprised me tremendously was the power and the "feeling" of this little engine... It is remarkable on so many levels. I can honestly say that I am in love with the Volvo XC40 T3. The engine is 150 kg lighter in the T3 than the one in the T5 with 248 HP, and thereby moves the weight from the front more towards the centre of the car, and this in turn makes the car much more sportier and lighter in its handling - but still robust and "heavy" enough. Volvo has done a really, really great work with this small engine and the entire car. When the Volvo car dealer convinced me to test drive this car I was highly sceptical... until I put my foot on the pedal and drove away. What a great car!
    Thanks for a great review. I think you summarized it very well when you said you were surprised by the T3's engine. Many are...

    Watched quite a few vids on this xc40 before stumbing on this video. You are the only reviewer that told us all we needed to know about T3. Than you!

    Very smart little car. I'm not over-keen on SUVs, but this one works. Excellent review as ever.

      Thank you! Kind words. Some SUVs feel like carbon copies of the next, but this feels a bit more unique.

      @@newmotoring - absolutely Seann - I think Volvo have very much carved their own design niche out in every segment they compete in.

    Good review Sean. Nice car and looks very well made. Just wish it was a bit cheaper.

      Thanks very much Andrew! It's a good package, but you're right, it isn't the cheapest... Then again, it is one of the best.

    Good review! Between xc40 t3 and audi q3 1.5lt, both of them on 'base' trims, which one would you prefer?

    I would MUCH rather be seen in this than any BMW or Audi SUV. However more inexpensive options like the Mazda CX5 and HyundaiTucson are not close behind

    Great Video Review. I would choose the XC40 as I prefer Small SUVs

      Thanks Jamie! Fair enough! A car the size of the Audi Q7 isn't for everyone.

    I had a look at one yesterday (Inscription). Very impressed with the fit & finish. Much better than the Peugeot 3008 and on a par (at least) with the DS7 Crossback Premium. Very comfortable seats, and well made with high quality leather.
    There are some nice leather colours for the seats, but there is a lot of black everywhere else. There's a memory driver's seat, but no heated seats as standard. Overall a bit mundane for a vehicle at this price. The paintwork colour choices are really dull on the Inscription model.
    The options list will make your eyes water. Camera-based driving aids and a Reversing camera will plonk £2000 on the already premium price. Metallic paint another £600. And that doesn't include a self parking function. Nor Apple/Android play @ £300. Cordless phone charging is £170. About double the going rate.
    I'll check out the deals, but I think Volvo will be going for niche buyers at that price, not volume sales.
    It's nice, but I can't help feeling Volvo are knocking on the door of Mercedes E class prices, but for quite a bit less car than the Merc, and a compromising 3 cylinders. A Tiguan would be similar for a lot less money.

    Looking at a fresh car I've just had a Golf written off after an accident and a crossover appeals to me I really like the XC40 as a package looks like a baby XC60 the cabin quality looks premium and I think they have the blend of engines just right plus gearbox options. The R Design model with either the T3 1.5 or T4 2.0 litre petrol would be my engines of choice. And I love metallic red that you tested their it's suits the car beautifully.
    Other than the Volvo my other picks I would like to test drive would be the Skoda Karoq Sportline 1.5 TSI 150 or Audi q3 with the 1.5 TSI & the VW Tiguan is a great car to.

      There’s a reason so many Volvos, XC40 included, are proving so popular. It’s a good little car.

    trying to decide on an SUV between this, Mazda CX-5 Nav+, Sportage GT S Line & Mitsi Eclipse Cross 4. Discounted 3008 yesterday as build quality under those funky dashboard looks is very average. Have had EC4 for couple of days, not 100% sure, Sportage looks great but doesn't get me excited with external styling, CX-5 testing next week. T3 1.5 petrol reviews are mixed so looking forward to testing it next week. Company car purchase but still want to get it right as I'll be stuck with what I choose for 3 years!

    Not as cheap as it should be in comparison with the XC60, order time is also long 6 months stated by my local dealer.

    • @newmotoring
      @newmotoring  5 лет назад

      6 months? Would you go for an XC60 then?

      Just ordered one in Canada. Also 6 months for the R-Design. The timing works well, though. New car in the spring.

    For this small Volvo SUV, with a 3 cylinder engine (which is just an embarrassment) to cost £29k is a rip off.

    Did you say 36k? Never worth the money , I'd pat 18k tops . All new cars way overpriced. A new civic type r is about 33k. ...... it's one of the best engineered cars of all time to me that's the benchmark. Anything more expensive has to be better.

    • @Colin623
      @Colin623 5 лет назад

      True, but they are totally different cars, aiming at a totally different market ! so if you are going compare then choose something from the same segment ! personally I would never buy a new car, reason one, can't afford it, two, overpriced ! unless you are prepared to buy a Dacia Sandero lol

    • @kevinkeelan354
      @kevinkeelan354 4 года назад +5

      Idiotic comparison. The new civic r is also the most ridiculous looking car you can buy.
