Volvo XC40 SUV (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volvo XC40 is yet another sub-compact crossover competing against cars like Audi Q3, BMW X1, BMW X2, Jaguar E-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLA. Volvo XC40 seems to be a car for people, who want something more from life than a Honda, an Opel or a VW. You have 50 grand to spend on a car, and for whatever reason you don’t want a top spec Ford Edge. This is where Volvo comes along. Apparently Volvo representatives at the Geneva Motor Show were surprised, when the XC40 was named 2018 European Car of the Year. XC90 was a breakthrough, but XC40 seems like another variation of the same concept. I drove most of the competitors, and I was also surprised, because who needs another sub-compact crossover?

    I've had my xc40 for a month now. Rides beautifully. Solid feel. Very comfortable seats. Sensus interface is easy once you find all the features, some of which I didn't know the car had. Only averaging 24 mpg although mostly around town driving so far. Have taken it on the beach in off-road mode. While ground clearance is fantastic for this, the car is not inspiring me with full confidence in the soft sand, so will investigate different tire treads, plus have Treds Traction boards stowed just in case.

    I really feel Volvo can shine here vs the competition as all the competition is fwd based and offer a max displacement of 2L.

    Hi Marek, great review again. I am looking for the best fun to drive SUV/Cross over (I have a 2005 MX5 and I intend to keep it) and I am thinking Audi Q2 2.0 quattro TDI, Volvo XC40 and X2 1.8 140hp. What do you think? My wife does not appreciate Mini's :)

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      Q2 is basically an expensive T-Roc, so you can get more for your money getting a VW. X2 is low on tech, and not very comfortable on long journeys. I think XC40 is the best blend of comfort, tech and driving dynamics.

  • @WinkelHoof
    @WinkelHoof 6 лет назад +3

    The Volvo XC40 is not a crossover. It got classic SUV proportions and high ground clearence (you said it yourself). For example the BMW X2 is a crossover. Part from that a great review as always.

    Hi Marek,
    I do like your down to hearth reviews. Would you please also include in your reviews the soundproofing of each car in the city and on the highway? I do not remember you mentioning how sound comfortable is one car against the other.
    Thanks in advance

    • @MarekDrives

      If there is something to say, I say it. This was average.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      They are all similar in this respect. Jaguar engine may have sounded a bit louder upon acceleration, but that was due to the gearbox. X2 was slightly quieter, because it was a diesel, so it worked on lower revs. Overall on the motorway they are average. If you want quiet, BMW 6 GT is pretty good.

      I usually don't do the same cars with different engines. Maybe after the facelift.
      And Audi doesn't talk to me, so it's highly unlikely I'll be reviewing any of their cars soon :)

    I have to say that Sensus is actually pretty easy to use if you spend an hour or so learning how it works. I do have to agree that the trip computer makes absolutely no sense at all and resetting it is confusing. I’m pretty sure on the left stalk on the steering wheel there is a ‘reset’ but you can push in to reset the trip computer.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      Volvo's constantly improving it with the updates, but maybe this is why I find it confusing. I drive 2-3 Volvos a year, and every time there's something new in Sensus. I drive BMWs more often, and their infotainment seems to be more consistent.
      I know there is a reset button on the stalk, but I'm never sure whether it resets all data, or whatever is displayed at the moment :)

    I really like this car a lot and it´s on my shortlist for next car change, together with the Q2. Which would you choose Marek, between a Q2 and an XC40 with similar specs? I also like the Q3 but I´m waiting to know more about the upgraded version, do you know when it is coming?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +3

      Q2 is a posher T-Roc. It's smaller than XC40. Volvo wins hands down here.

    • @WinkelHoof

      The Q3 will be introduced later this year.

    • @q3b26
      @q3b26 6 лет назад +1

      I was in the same boat. Looking at the Q2, T-Roc, Mini Countryman and the XC40.
      I placed an order for the XC40 yesterday.
      The quality of everything in the VW felt cheap, the Mini I tested had a fault with the collision warning system, there was no 30mph on the speedometer which made it difficult to judge speeds at a glance, the sound system was terrible even compared to my stock 2007 Ford Focus stereo (no depth, no mid range, no bass in the Mini), the Audi was too small and the interior while minimalistic and high quality just felt basic so I went for the XC40.
      It's a long wait for one, I won't get it until October but I'm not fussed I know I made the right choice.

    Interesting if idiosyncratic review. Some comments seem a bit hit and miss, eg visibility - everyone has to agree that rear three-quarter visibility is poor, but other reviewers comment on good vision around the A pillars. And is it not possible to adjust the steering feel in the 'individual' drive mode (genuine question). Etc

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 5 лет назад

      Individual mode lets you configure steering force (i.e. heavier/lighter), but does not affect steering geometry. If the wheel doesn't return to its center position fast enough, there's nothing you can do, but slow down. And as I said, this is not a car for those, who like a sporty ride, and that's fine.
      As far as front visibility is concerned, I don't know what these other reviewers compared this car against. Compared to a Ford F150 I bet XC40 has great visibility, but the entire current Volvo range is notorious for huge mirrors, which really obstruct visibility. V60 review is coming in a few weeks. The same problem there too.

    Don’t like the looks of it but that doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate it. What really bothers me is what the heck is 2.0 litre engine do inside a small crossover. 247 hp is absolutely too much. And the price is really steep.

    • @MarekDrives

  • @KeyhanHadjari

    Let's see, Volvo's highest selling model since many years is xc60, so you are pretty wrong about which model sells best.

    • @DouglasABailey
      @DouglasABailey 6 лет назад

      Keyhan Hadjari XC40 is now Volvo’s best selling car at launch. They announced that in UK they expected to sell 1,000 a month and are currently selling 2,000 a month. Which is why I believe they cancelled a couple of hundred orders that were due to go to Australia. 😐

    • @AmongUs-mb4qx

      Billy Johnson so you're suggesting that you're the one who bought this car with 21" wheels? Not really a wise choice for someone with back problems.
      There are plenty of women out there who would buy cars with big wheels only to complain later about the bone jarring ride. Bling factor attracts 'em!
