Traded my X1 and got the XC40 r design first edition. What a car I would say just amazing. Exterior and interior materials are excellent. The only downside I would say is the gearbox, it is a bit slow to react.

dont know about the states, but in sweden volvo is the most sold car almost every year.
Just got my momentum last week. No regrets picking this over Mercedes GLA 180

This car is pretty much better than the mentioned competitor in price, design and equipment not to mention the size is much spacious. If i have the money this is the i want hands down.

It's a strong contender for me. The MB GLA has fallen off my list. Now I must decide between this and the Jag E-pace. Although I like the look of the Jag, I think the interior is underwhelming given its price. Guess it'll come down to the drive between the XC40 & the E-pace. Thanks for the review, loved it!
Given that the only real knock, in my opinion, against all Volvo vehicles is its FWD based and only available with 4 cylinder engines. The subcompact segment SUVs all follow this criteria of 4 cylinders and fwd. This plays into Volvos strong suit. Easily the best interior in segment. This is best in class

Beautiful car - plenty of features included in the launch editions, competent engines, practical and modern interior - but being a current Volvo V40 2013 owner, service costs, after-sales service, resale value here in Australia scare me off.

Just got a XC40 Inscription (T4 AWD only) with Pilot. It was just good timing as I the brand was not on my radar with many to choose from. The almost-deal-breaker is the stupid gear double shifting, likely to find panicking in neutral at some stage, if your are listening Volvo. The rear seats are a tad upright and not adjustable at all, only tolerable for adults on short runs. This car was in stock with Pilot Parking that I would not have ordered, it is lethargic, and seemingly cannot to do it in one smooth movement. Good article Matt, though have to disagree with your intro, as buying up in size is never gonna happen here after 40 years driving, as if small-medium buyers really want for big ones ...like, noooo.
Back seats are not adjustable that sucks
My advice for your review is to shoot video without sunshine which distracts spectator. And you can turn music on background o be a little bit not boring.
The momentum is better looking for me, it’s like gulf.

You are saying less than usual which is good. But keep it up! No real need to say "as well" all the time.
Poor result for crash test but overall seem decent. This may be due to the price.
poor review - what sort of reliability has this car? are spare parts easily available? did you know Volvos are made by Geely in China? did you know the battery is in the boot? - etc etc
This Volvo XC40, like the S60 and others, is made bij Volvo in Genk, Belgium (Europe).
