    I fixed my vacuum. After I watched a couple of RUclips videos, I got a $5 replacement part and was off and vacuuming in no time. In addition to not buying another $120 vacuum, I also felt smart and competent.

      That is true dedication and speaks to the fact that little things can add up to huge things! You displayed a great work ethic and sacrifice here. I hope you got to bring lunch to school and eat also! I know sometimes it does take lots of sacrifice, but if you were my child I'd want you to eat 💕 Thank you so much for sharing your story! I hope you have a great day!

      I saved my bus money and walked to school, then used the bus money to buy little things I wanted. There were no laptops back then, not any that I could afford with bus money at least.

    As always, I enjoyed your video! Great points! The eating out is so costly. I enjoy cooking and having friends over to eat in a quiet and relaxing environment. There’s no restaurant noise and no waiting staff pressuring us to leave after we’ve eaten. I like taking my coffee and lunches to work with me. Eating out is so expensive and not as satisfying. I hadn’t heard of military showers; it’s a practice that I want to adapt to. Thanks again for your great ideas!

    I grew up with a really frugal mother. She grew up during the depression in Japan. As a child, i remember we had the same roll of paper towels in the kitchen for years. Teaching contentment is an awesome tip. We have so much more than what we really truly need. When I was in St. Thomas I would turn on the water long enough to lather up my cloth and of it would go until I rinsed. I need to try to do this at home more even though I don't pay water. It's my part to help the fish!

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 лет назад +1

      You're so right we are so lucky to have more than we need. St. Thomas sounds so beautiful did you live there? Every little bit can help! Fish are friends, not food (

      @@TheFrugalMinimalist St Thomas was a trip I was blessed to go on, but they _heavily_ stressed how precious and short of water supply was, so that's what I did. 🤗 Lol @the Nemo reference!

    I'm a new subscriber. I've always loved to save money. My mother lived through the Korean War and know what it was like to have everything taken from you. She became very frugal and I learned that from her. I love all your tips and already use some of them myself. I cut my own and families hair, taught myself how to do nail art, make lots of diy's and have made money doing people's nails and selling my diys. I agree with what you said about contentment. So many people live beyond their means and end up in debt because they always want what others have. As parents we need to teach our kids to appreciate what we have and not feel entitled to have things they can't afford. Glad I found your channel.

Please advise others to adjust the playback speed to make it go faster! They can increase from 1.25x to 2x! 😂 I've experienced the same as I age as well, it makes life so much nicer I think. Thank you for your very kind words and for watching! I hope you have a great rest of the week!

    My vacuum cleaner is 40 years old. I spent nearly its original purchase price to have it fixed 25 years ago, and he threw in a 40-foot cord for free. I never have to replug. lol I used to buy all my bags at thrift stores, but the Dyson has made it nearly impossible to buy them 'second-hand' any longer, so I bought a large number of them that will last me for robably 5 years. I should live so long.
    I use a 5 gallon bucket and an usb-charged electric submersible pump to shower off the grid. It's amazing that 5 gallons gives you a perfect shower, with a shampoo. I pay for my water by the gallon, so I'm very frugal. I wash my clothes in a hand washer, which uses 4 gallonsfor wash, 3 .5 gallons for rinse. I use it once a week in the summer, twice a month in winter. I do have a spin dryer that makes life so much easier. For large things, I use a friend's machine occasionally.
    I learned to cut my own hair a couple of years ago. I am allergic to perfumes, too, like your son. I have severe multiple chemical sensitivity, so most cleaners are out for me. Vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and Ecover unscented dishwashing liquid are all I use, including vinegar for deodorant. It works better, and costs nearly nothing. I have tiny spray bottles for it.
    It wasn't just for money that I downsized so much, but for my health. It turned out to be more frugal than I had ever imagined.
    I can really live on so little. I have a running list of things I'd like to have to use, like iced tea spoons to get to the bottom of jars for mayo, or a bag of brown sugar, or stirring a deep mug of tea. I use them every day. I keep a glass of water on the sink to rinse them off in each time. It's so easy. I bought them at the thrift store for 25¢ each. Patience, and awareness. Yard sales, and online lists. Easy, peasy.

    These are all great tips. Many people today do not pay attention to not being wasteful basically there's so much consumerism today that no matter how much you earned it just never enough. I see it with my grandchildren they are being brought up in a community that has a lot of money and everybody has everything and they just spend like it's going out of style it's really sad to see. I do not live that way. I like being Frugal I like being mindful of not wasting everything around me. Thank you for this video

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 лет назад

      I hear you on the consumerism part, Natalia. It's hard to avoid with all the targeted marketing and insane amounts of screen time. We still probably play in to some of that but we try to be keenly aware of our purchases and like you more mindful, frugal and intentional. Thank you so much for your kind comment and for sharing a bit of your insights. I love how YT brings together like minded people 🙌💕

    Yes! I live in Central california so water is quite precious.....I too use buckets in shower & kitchen sink.....and will be letting lawn in front die ( but will put in a kitchen garden)..... fan running now at night, just gotta deal w/ it when 100°+ hits. Going to hang dry laundry soon... it's a journey but at 41 I'm just tired of being in debt, damn it, so it's for real now.

      We thankfully don’t have that where I am. I kept my showers under 10minutes anyways. I shower usually every other day or every two days when I’m just staying home,but I do wet my razor & do my underarms and wet a washcloth a little bit,add some soap,wash my arms & under and then rinse & dry with the same washcloth if possible. If it gets irritated I use aloe Vera gel to soothe it. I also make my sons bath 50% or less,usually less of the tub rather than fill it all the way up for a 3 minute bath,he likes to just get it done and get out.

      Thank you so much, Anna! I believe there's so much power in the mindset and just how you frame your reference points. One book I recently listened to on this is "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck. I borrowed this from my library and it was really a great enforcer of this message. If you have a chance to get your hands on it from your library I'd recommend it! Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! I hope you have a great weekend!

    I recycle the water also. With the bathroom, I have a bucket under the sink and also collect the shower water. Yes, I took the drain pipe off the sink and just have a long straight pipe to fill the bucket. That I use for flushing the toilet.

    It is usually recommended by podiatrists NOT to wear used shoes worn by others. Shoes shift shape to fit the foot that’s wearing it, changing the shape from when newly worn. I do enjoy your other tips!

      Hmm, I never thought of it this way but it does make a lot of sense! We haven't seemed to come across any issues. The apartment complex I’m in covers gas, but not electric. To save $, I use daylight, have LED bulbs everywhere, and here’s my favorite tip: instead of turning on the light in my (small) kitchen, I touch the battery powered stick-on light under my cabinet.
    I wfh, on my computer, so I have to find other ways to save electrify.

    I live alone, but I make full crockpots of food. It tastes good, is nutritious, and saves time and money. I use pint size mason jars to store all the meals in my deep freezer. A pint is a good size meal.
    Another frugal thing I do is ask for necessities as presents for bday or Christmas. I don’t need more trinkets, but a giant size bag of baking soda for cleaning is a gift I can appreciate all year. In addition, those necessities cost the same or usually less than trinkets.
    I grocery shop at my parents house. They are still stuck in the mindset of having 4 kids, so they still buy everything in bulk. When I need stuff, I take it from theirs and pay them what I would pay the store. I can buy the small amounts I need so I don’t have waste, plus it also reduces their waste, and offsets their costs.
    I extended my dryer hose and got a special filter so I can blow that nice warm dryer air into my house instead of outside. Why let all that lovely hot air go to waste? In summer I’ll switch to clothes drying racks. For those who say that the dryer air will put lint dust around my house: I have 4 cats. I have cat hair everywhere. Clean dryer lint dust won’t hurt anything.
    I knew to eat before grocery shopping, but I found I would grab food on other excursions, so now I always eat before leaving the house. I also make sure to fill my coffee cup or water jug before leaving so I don’t spend on beverages.
    I use shredded paper for kitty litter. All my junk mail, the used Christmas wrapping paper, any other junk paper gets shredded and pooped on. I no longer buy cat litter. When I’m at a friends house and they have paper that’s going to be recycled or thrown away, I ask for it. There’s a post office a couple blocks from me with paper recycle cans for peoples junk mail in their PO Boxes.

    For the water saving on bathing, I put the plug in the tub and take a bath. My tub fills in 5 minutes. I turn the hot water on only. That cold in the pipes comes out first, but then the scalding hot. They mix creating a nice temperature. No wasted water.
    When I want a long hot soak, I use bubble bath. The bubbles keep the heat in the water so I don’t have to run more hot water to keep the bath warm.

    Love your videos! I have been cutting my own hair since 1995! Like you, I paid for many haircuts I didn't like. I have curly hair which looks longer when wet so often got "scalped" even though I asked for just a trim. I finally bought a cutter advertised on tv called Flowbee and used it for years. When it no longer worked and was no longer available, I found one called Robocut. They both operated on the same principal of using a vacuum cleaner to suck hair through an adjustable-length tube to cutting blades. I really can't even estimate how much money I've saved over all the years, plus avoided the inconvenience and time waste of going to a beauty shop (not a way I'd choose to pamper myself, though some enjoy that sort of thing). I just inverted a perfect box for storage! That is a game changer! Why did I never think of that?!! Thanks for a great channel!

    When you run your kitchen tap, don't let that water go down the drain. Save it in a pot and use it for something. Maybe after you get enough, you could fill one of those portable showers, put it in your tub and save having to use the main shower once a week or more. Some RVers use these or buy a weed sprayer which also could work.

      Thank you so much for visiting! I just love her and her channel so much. Hello fellow Californian! We're in inland San Diego and probably have a similar climate to you. We have a whole house window fan that has been a huge electricity saver in the summer months. Saves so much since most nights are usually cooler. What are some ways you save on those? Thank you very much for watching and I hope you have a great day!

    Great ideas! We have been packing lunches and snacks since my boys were little. My boys have severe food allergies so it is something we have had to do. We also don't eat out much. My husband is in the process of remodeling our bathroom. It is saving us so much money. Thankfully, he is handy!

      Yes! I'm going to try and film what I can. Right now I am working on painting all of our trim white, while my husband is doing the bathroom. This summer, I am going to paint our kitchen cabinets white as well. We have older orange oak trim and cabinets and they need updating. This will update everything without a huge cost. I always have the lid off the water tank of the toilet with the tap turned on only when frequent flushing becomes necessary.
    Normally I would save up water from washing stuff and pour it down the tank whenever I could. Also have a water filled bottle sitting inside the tank so it fills less water for each fill.
    I do live in an apartment and the water is paid for regardless of usage, but I do feel good to save water as much as I can. Furthermore, I have weight(2 dollar Cdn coin) attached to the "flush valve flapper" so that it shuts much sooner.

    I'm always looking for ways to save. We've never had a large, extra freezer, only the one that is with the fridge. We've taken out the ice maker and that gives us a lot more room. Almost everyone we have known that has a large freezer has had it break down or lose the content during a power outage. If they have their home insurance cover the cost their rates go up.

    Our California state campgrounds have three tokens for $1. Each token is three minute shower and not always warm. Maybe warm up in old thrift store coffee insulated containers(?) Or somehow I'm already trying to figure out that logistic. But incorporate into the campground showers for the pressure shower(arthritic bones for starters). But the grandkids are coming to visit soon, so this 'military shower' idea will work well for them.

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Jenny, I hope it ends up working out for you and your grandkids! One thing we did in those campground showers was use old cereal or food boxes to stand on, just to protect our feet from fungus and such, or flip flops would work as well. We learned this from scouting. 😃

    I would be wary myself of tinkering with a furnace. We happily pay to have a yearly maintenance on our heating furnace, usually in September/October so we know everything is ready for winter.

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 лет назад

      I was too, but it ended up being very easy to do! The gas company we have does free inspections and the tech they sent out really helped us out in figuring out some parts of the appliance. That coupled with google searches allowed us to find the technical paper to our furnace and we were able to figure things out from there. If we had to anything more major, I would definitely have left it to the professionals and gladly paid for their expertise. Maintenance is definitely key to saving money in the long run 👍
